PICKS OF THE WEEK Fist Fight (PG-13) — Kids at Roosevelt High School run amok with drugs, prurient pranks and brazen disregard for learning or their school community — the teachers are worse.

On the final day of school before summer break, nearspineless Mr. Campbell (Charlie Day) tattles and inadvertently gets rageaholic Mr. Strickland (Ice Cube) fired, resulting in the latter challenging his wussy former-colleague to a fistfight after class.

Hype builds quickly, snowballing into a full-blown fiasco.

Much like the students of the fictional suburban high school, the movie has a rotten

sense of humor, appealing to the lowest common denominator but still quick enough to steal a laugh from the stodgiest authority figure.

Ice Cube seems stuck on one note for the duration, when the whole thing could use the extra dimension. Credit is due to supporting players Jillian Bell (as a criminally incompetent guidance counselor) and Tracy Morgan (as a coach who helps prep Day for the fight).

Before I Fall (PG-13) — Trapped reliving the same day over and over again, teenage Samantha (Zoey Deutch) comes to new realizations about the consequences of the ridicule her clique piles onto others.

Lindsay (Halston Sage), the ringleader of their mean-girl quartet, drives Sam and friends to their deaths after a party one night, launching Sam’s “Groundhog Day” experience.

The clique’s regular punching bag, Juliet (Elena Kampouris), figures prominently in

Matsubara). Tim McGraw narrates.

Warning: If you’re not already belting it with the choir, then this sermon isn’t for you.

True to reality-based youngadult fiction, there are plenty of cliches, and very high stakes are attached to pedestrian social dynamics. Still, Deutch succeeds in carrying the film, which is commendable given what she had to work with.

the movie hits its target and doesn’t choke in the final act, like so many before.

The Shack (PG-13) — A regular flannel-clad family man (Sam Worthington) gets a mysterious invite from a higher power to find peace and enlightenment on a forest getaway with the Holy Trinity.

After losing a young child

to a serial killer while on a family camping trip, Mack (Worthington), struggles with grief, while others around him find solace in faith.

An invite from “Papa” (read: God) pulls Mack to a shack to spend some quality time with Papa (Octavia Spencer, and then Graham Greene), Jesus (Aviv Alush) and The Holy Spirit (Sumire

Collide (PG-13) — Here we have an original property with white-knuckle chase scenes and a star-studded cast.

That it was suspiciously left on a shelf for several years should be a flashing red warning that the bridge is out ahead.

Casey (Nicholas Hoult) quit the crime life for the sake of his beloved Juliet (Felicity Jones). Juliet develops some health problems that Casey can solve only with One Last Job for a scary Turkish guy (Ben Kingsley, not really selling it).

Of course, the job goes awry and then a scarier guy (Anthony Hopkins) sends in his goons. Each time you think the action is ready to shift to a higher gear, a tank of overwrought exposition floods the engine.

River Bluff’s Ledell 4-peats as state champion, B-L’s West wins gold

The S.C. High School League Track and Field championships at Harry Parone Stadium produced two Chronicle Country state champions.

D.L. Ledell of River Bluff and Ty’Lashia West of Batesburg-Leesville combined for three state titles over the weekend.

It was an historic moment for Ledell who won both the Class 5A long jump and triple jump. The latter marked the fourth consecutive championship in the event and in a third classification for Ledell, a state record.

As for West, she finished first in the Class 2A shotput. Her win propelled the Lady Panthers to a fourth place finish, the highest among Chronicle Country schools.

Internal Grant Highlight: Oncology Nutrition Support: The Foundation has granted $23,045 to fund two nutrition programs for LMC cancer patients.

The Cancer Nutrition Series is a seven week series promoting “food as medicine” for cancer patients. Through cooking lessons, grocery store tours, and exercise classes, patients will see improved self-efficacy and skills for food choices and exercise.

Oncology Nutrition Support is

designed for cancer patients who face risk of malnutrition due to swallowing difficulties as a result of chemotherapy, radiation, and/or surgery. These patients often have the willingness to listen to their physicians about proper nutrition but lack the resources necessary to achieve results. With input from LMC’s Registered Dietician about a nutritional plan, each patient will receive a kit that includes an immersion blender, a special cookbook, and the initial ingredients for smoothies.

Cigarettes (and pipes and cigars…) limit your body’s ability to fight off infection which leaves you defenseless against the bacteria produced by smoking. When your mouth can’t fight back, plaque and bacteria fester. This leads to problems ranging from yellowing of the teeth to decay and all of the problems that can go from there.

When you smoke, you short circuit your body’s auto-immune defenses. Your body cannot protect itself, and suddenly, tartar buildup becomes a major issue because your body can’t battle infection.

The blood circulation in your mouth drastically decreases when you smoke. Grit in the tobacco can also rub teeth and wear away their protective coating of enamel.

Smokeless tobacco products (for example, snuff, and chewing tobacco) contain at least 28 chemicals that have been shown to increase the risk of oral cancer and cancer of the throat and esophagus. In fact, chewing tobacco contains higher levels of nicotine than cigarettes, making it harder to quit than cigarettes. One can of snuff delivers more nicotine than over 60 cigarettes.

Smokeless tobacco can irritate your gum tissue causing it to recede or pull away from your teeth. Once the gum tissue recedes, your tooth roots are more prone to decay and sensitivity to hot, cold and sweets, making eating and drinking much more uncomfortable.

In addition, sugars are often added to smokeless tobacco to enhance the flavor, which greatly increases your risk for tooth decay. A study by the Journal of the American Dental Association showed that chewing tobacco users were four times more likely than non-users to develop tooth decay!

Smokeless tobacco can also contain sand and grit which can wear down your teeth.

Regardless of how long you have been using tobacco products, quitting now can greatly reduce serious risks to your health. Studies show that eleven years after quitting, former smokers have the same likelihood of having gum disease as those who have never smoked!

Even decreasing the amount you smoke has benefits. One study showed that decreasing a smoking habit to half a pack a day left a three times risk of gum disease, whereas those that smoke a pack and a half have a six times greater risk

of gum disease (compared to non-smokers).

Another study showed that the mouth lesion associated with tobacco use (what we call white leukoplakia) resolved itself in 6 weeks for 97.5% of those who quit smoking. Leukoplakia is considered to be pre-cancerous.

Your doctor can help you quit smoking! Several medications, patches and gums are available over the counter.

Other medications, like “Zyban” do require a prescription.

Many local hospitals, employers, or health insurances will offer smoking cessation classes and support groups, too.

A Volunteer Story

exington Medical Center’s volunteers celebrated Volunteer Week with staff members applauding their dedication and commitment to service at their annual luncheon on April 24 In 2016, Lexington Med-

ical Center volunteers spent more than 60,620 hours delivering flowers and cards, staffing information desks, facilitating pet therapy and assisting patients in departments throughout the hospital network.

Through the Volunteer Auxiliary, they purchased needed equipment for the hospital, including 3-D mammography technology through the hospital’s Foundation, and awarded more than $75,000 in nursing scholarships to high school graduates and those pursuing continuing and everyone’s favorite – weight loss. Detoxing your body

s I write this, I’m on day six of a 21-Day Detox Challenge that involves giving up sugar, grains and dairy for twenty-one days. This is a program that I do with many of my clients three times a year in order to reset how we’re eating and to give our bodies, especially the liver a break from foods that tend to be allergens.

One major thing I’ve learned from eliminating potentially “problem” foods in January, May and October for the past few years is that the quality of what you eat matters a great deal. Highly processed foods may be convenient, but they are calorie dense and low in nutrients. On the other hand, whole, unprocessed foods are full of vitamins and minerals.

Eating fresh, organic produce and hormone, antibiotic and preservative-free meats absolutely enables your body to work more efficiently and you feel the effects.

n Mondays, I work at Lake Murray Animal Hospital in Gilbert. This morning when I arrived I found that my technician, Felicia Sightler, had written some very profound words on the chalk board in the lobby. It made me feel proud and very appreciative of the dedicated individuals who work with me. What follows is what Felicia wrote on the board: “As I cleaned the nose prints off our glass door for the millionth time I can’t help but smile and think about the noses that have traveled thru that door. The happy noses, the way too excited noses, the not so sure noses, the scared noses, the sick noses, and the I’m gonna change my mind in about two seconds noses. All here for different reasons but all have one thing in common, the love of a human. What a wonderful thing that is between dog and man. And each little cold nose means something to someone, whether they know it or not. And one day when those noses are gone, those prints will forever remain on the hearts they’ve touched. So the next time a little wet nose nudges you, take a moment to take it all in and remember that time when a little wet nose felt you worthy of their “print”.”

For those who know Felicia, they know what a big heart she has and how much she cares about each patient. She knows how important each pet is to each family.

Part of the family If you have a pet, you know the joy of coming home to someone who is excited to see you. It turns out more than 60% of households have a pet. Pets are now traveling more with their owners. 56% of people with dogs let them sleep in the bed. 53% of dog owners consider their dog as family. Pet costumes are a big business. How many of us have spent time watching you tube videos of pets dressed up

at Halloween or chuckled at how entertaining cats can be when being cats. The word, Zooeyia, describes the positive benefits to human health from interacting with animals.

Pets can increase our exercise.

Pets can lessen the impact of chronic disease. Pets can promote community. Pets can facilitate smoking cessation as we stop because of our pet’s health. More than a third of all Americans and half of all singles say they rely more on their pets than on other people for companionship.

The down side One down side to this is that sometimes our pets will develop separation-related disorders. This occurs for both cats and dogs. They can experience physical and emotional distress when separated from a person with whom they are socially bonded. Signs of separation-related disorders can include destructive acts, such as destroying household objects, chewing furniture, and frantic scratching at door frames and window sills. The signs can develop in cats and dogs at any age, in any breed, and in either sex. Fifty percent of affected dogs show clinical signs before the age of three while cats over seven years of age may be more likely to be affected. Predisposing factors in both dogs and cats include daily extended periods of time without the owner, change in schedule or family makeup, and single owner households.

are anticipating your departure. Cats may urinate on your bed. Your dog may appear depressed and withdrawn or may exhibit aggression. Signs of anxiety associated with departure cues support a diagnosis of separation anxiety. Departure cues include getting ready for work, picking up your keys or a briefcase, or anything else always done before departing.

In treating separation disorders there are several things to realize. Your pet is not acting this way out of spite or anger. You didn’t cause the problem by loving your pet too much, spoiling your pet, or not being dominant. Your pet in not bored and getting another pet is not the answer.

You do have to try and decrease the stress your pet.

If possible try and avoid departures in the initial stage of treatment by using daycare, house sitters, or boarding.

This may be easier said than done. Trying to confine your pet may minimize destruction in the house but may also increase anxiety. You can block off areas most likely to be damaged and use a product like Anti-Icky-Poo to clean up any soiled areas. You can leave the radio on or play music or white noise to calm your

pet. You should avoid punishment such as hitting, yelling, or shock collars. They actually make the anxiety worse.

If possible, associate departures with something positive such as food toys. You should try and make your departures and returns low key. In many cases anti-anxiety medication

may be needed to help facilitate behavioral modification training. You should talk to your veterinarian about what exercises may help and what medications may be needed.

Overcoming anxiety is not a quick fix for our pets and takes lots of patience. Don’t

be discouraged. I some cases your veterinarian may want to recommend you and your pet see a board certified veterinary behaviorist. Just remember what Felicia wrote on the board. In the end that little wet nose will make a print on your heart.

here are eight million stories in the naked city that we call History.

And this is one of the strangest.

Springtime always reminds me of a crazy fad from the 1970s. It arrived out of nowhere, flying by in a blur that left some people horrified, others amused, plus a good many unsure just what to make of it. And in a flash, it was gone.

This is the short, strange story of Streaking.

Before we skinny dip into the depths of this bizarre phenomenon, let’s strip away the years and revisit the early 1970s.

It’s important to remember America was in a profound funk just then.

The nightmare that was the Vietnam War had finally ended, only to

Streak Mania was in full force by Spring 1974.

Comedian Ray Stevens cashed in on the craze with his hit single The Streak. The fad’s highwater mark came during the 46th Annual Academy Awards on April 2, 1974.

Just as the night’s biggie, Best Picture, was about to be announced, a naked man dashed across the stage of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (and into millions of homes where people were watching on live TV) flashing the two-fingered peace sign.

Poor, dashing, debonair David Niven had the misfortune of being at the podium.

But he turned it into Oscars history by quipping, “Isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?”

I confess here and now that I never Streaked. It didn’t appeal to me, and since seeing a gangly 13 year-old naked adolescent boy likely wouldn’t have appealed to anyone, my decision worked out well for everyone.

But a close friend did Streak.

Contractor estimates

Three contractors were visiting a tourist attraction on the same day. One was from New York, another from Texas, and the third from Florida.

At the end of the tour, the guard asked them what they did for a living.

When they all replied that they were contractors, the guard said, “Hey, we need one of the rear fences redone.

Why don’t you guys take a look at it and give me a bid?”

So, to the back fence they all went to check it out.

First to step up was the Florida contractor. He took out his tape measure and pencil, did some measuring and said, “Well I figure the job will run about $900. $400 for materials, $400 for my crew, and $100 profit for me.”

Next was the Texas contractor. He also took out his tape measure and pencil, did

some quick figuring and said, “Looks like I can do this job for $700. $300 for materials, $300 for my crew, and $100 profit for me.”

Without so much as moving, the New York contractor said, “$2,700.”

The guard, incredulous, looked at him and said, “You didn’t even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?”

“Easy,” he said. “$1,000 for me, $1,000 for you and we hire the guy from Texas.”

Reindeer games It was the final answer on the game show and the contestant was one question away from the $1 million prize.

“To be today’s champion,” the show’s smiling host intoned, “name two of Santa’s reindeer.”

The contestant gave a sigh of relief, gratified that she had drawn such an easy question.

“Rudolph!” she said confidently, “...and Olive!”

The studio audience started to applaud (as the little sign above their heads said to do), but the clapping quickly faded into mumbling, and the confused host replied, “Yes, we’ll accept Rudolph, but could you please explain ’Olive’?”

“You know,” the contestant began to sing, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer – had a very shiny nose. And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glowed. Olive, the other reindeer...”

Dancing duck A circus owner walked into a bar to see everyone crowded about a table watching a little show.

On the table was an upsidedown pot and a duck tap dancing on it.

The circus owner was so impressed that he offered to buy the duck from its owner.

After some wheeling and dealing they settled for $10,000 for the duck and the pot.

Three days later the circus owner runs back to the bar in anger, “Your duck is a rip-off!

I put him on the pot before a whole audience and he didn’t dance a single step!”

“Oh?” asked the duck’s former owner. “Did you remember to light the candle under the pot?”

Sidewalk practice An American attorney had just finished a guest lecture at a law school in Italy when an Italian lawyer approached him and asked, “Is it true that a person can fall down on a sidewalk in your country and then sue the landowners for lots of money?”

Told that it was true, the lawyer turned to his partner and started speaking rapidly in Italian. When they stopped, the American attorney asked if

Raymond told me that around midnight one Friday night that spring he peeled off everything and ran down his quiet Joplin, Missouri residential street while his neighbors slept. He called it “exhilarating.”

But Raymond dismissed that as a technicality. He had run naked in public which, in his eyes at least, made him a bona-fide Streaker.

Case closed.

Then, as quickly as it had arrived, Streaking vanished. Nixon’s resignation and subsequent pardon that summer left little interest in antics.

Streaking’s brief shining moment was over.

The 70s resumed their dreary slog on the treadmill of misery. At least Streaking had brought us a moment of levity.

We needed it, too, for unbeknown to us the decade’s true horror -Disco Dancing- was lurking around the corner.

Once it was unleashed on us, seeing someone dash by in the nude didn’t seem so bad after all.

Dead mule A preacher went to his church office on Monday morning and discovered a dead mule in the church yard.

He called the police.

Since there did not appear to be any foul play, the police referred the preacher to the health department.

They said since there was no health threat that he should call the sanitation department.

The sanitation manager said he could not pick up the mule without authorization from the mayor.

Now the preacher knew the mayor and was not to eager to call him. The mayor had a bad temper and was generally hard to deal with, but the preacher called him anyway.

Solid silver fox captures the animal’s wily nature

T

his most remarkable piece of solid silver art possesses the ability to attract even the most jaded collector. Crafted by hand in the period of 1870, this figure forms an immediate emotional bond with any eye that beholds it The beguiling nature of a wild fox has been captured by the hand of a master silver smith.

So evocative is this palm-size treasure, it connects the heart and the brain— a marvel of emotion associated with a small, inanimate object. The upturned head and sideways glance portray an appealing, wild yet pensive nature.

This little fox was made by an old method of casting solid silver. This method was also used by those working in bronze, gold and other precious metals. Unlike pieces crafted using sectional construction (separate pieces assembled into a whole), this method relies on a precise casting of one piece to craft the object.

A silver decorator would have been employed to carve and chase the realistic detail into the surface after the initial casting was complete.

The decorator in this case signed the fox on the back side. Included in the chased decoration are the flora and fauna associated with the forest home of the fox, adding even greater appeal.

This fox is from a collection of silver animals, each rendered with careful attention to detail own. The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 358.14 (full pool is 360.00), and surface water temperatures have dropped from the low to mid-70s back into the mid-to upper 60s after the recent rains.

The lake is also significantly more stained.

There are still Lake Murray bass that are spawning on Lake Murray, particularly out on the main lake, but most bass fishermen are thinking about a different spawning species–blueback herring.

In the CATT spring final recently, tournament angler Andy Wicker reports

that the winners (and his brothers) Daniel and Gary McGlohorn rode a strong herring bite to 22 pounds of fish, with most of their weight coming on topwater lures fished off main lake points. In addition to fish, the anglers were also stacked up out there.

On windy days like Saturday that bite is a little better and can last longer, but still most of their weight came before 9 a.m.

There are still some other ways to catch fish, such as in pockets or on buzzbaits, but the shallow herring bite is pretty much wide open

On the catfish front, Captain Chris Simpson (864992-2352) reports that the bite is relatively unchanged and fish are still super scattered throughout the lake and across a wide range of depths.

People are catching fish anchored on humps as shallow as just a few feet, and catching them drifting as deep as 45 feet.

Herring and perch are working best but look for stinkbait to get better with the warming. Chris only rates the bite as “fair” right now.

SnapChat SnapChat is fun and easy to use. Its messaging system revolves around taking pictures. You can take a picture or video of yourself, friends or your environment and send it to friends or just place it as your “story” for the day.

The most fun is using filters to change how you look in the pictures and video. It gives you something fun to play with and the ability to send small messages to friends.

The scary part of SnapChat is that all messages

are deleted from the server after a small amount of time. Most picture or video messages are deleted after they are played and text messages are deleted after a short period.

This makes the application a great place for bullies or pedophiles. Make sure your children or grandchildren know who they are talking to when using SnapChat.

KiK / WhatsApp Both KiK and WhatsApp are secure messaging applications.

The messages and the phone calls that can be placed via these apps are only used via internet connections and do not use mobile data. They cannot be seen on call logs.

The idea of making calls via internet is a plus for those with loved ones out of the country. It doesn’t require a special phone service. However, it also makes it an ideal place to hide conversations and phone calls as the only place they are logged is on the phones themselves.

GroupMe Easy to use group messaging application. This allows many people to be on a group message but not as

annoying as group texting.

You can leave the group at anytime or silence the notifications until you are ready to see the conversation.

Hangouts / Messenger Google’s Hangouts and Facebook Messenger are more messaging applications. Both can be used on either a computer, a tablet or a phone.

They are connected to the websites themselves.

Hangouts is used via a gmail address. And Messenger is used via your Facebook account.

In class, we also discussed that we are all becoming addicted to our phones. How many times have you left home and had to go back because you left your phone?

I can’t stand to be without mine.

The true test is in the morning. Consider leaving your phone charging in another room over night or at least across the room from your bed.

Studies show that those who are addicted the most actually look at their phone before even saying good morning to their significant other.
