PICKS OF THE WEEK War Machine (TV-MA) — Continuing its quest to blur the line between box office and set-top box, this week brings Netflix’s much anticipated premiere of “War Machine,” a Brad Pitt vehicle that seriously amps the streaming service’s star power.

Inspired by The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan, written by Rolling Stone journalist Michael Hastings, the farcical comedy chronicles the meteoric rise and inevitable crash and burn of the fictional Gen. Glen McMahon, newly minted commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, as he tries to win the unwinnable war.

Pitt’s take on real-life Gen. Stanley McChrystal — invincible silver fox, demigod to his subordinates — is clever and confident.

Billed as “part reality, part savage parody,” it is directed by David Michod (Animal Kingdom) and also features Tilda Swinton, Sir Ben Kingsley, Anthony Michael Hall, Alan Ruck, Meg Tilly and Topher Grace.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter (aka February) (R) — Pervasive chill and desolation join the cast in the directorial debut of Oz Perkins, son of the late Anthony Perkins (Psycho). Kat (Kiernan Shipka) is stranded at her remote boarding school when her parents are unexpected no-shows at the start of winter break. She’s joined

by Rose (Lucy Boynton), an older, bolder but not wiser fellow student.

Plagued by unexplainable events, the girls face an escalating supernatural threat.

Emma Stone plays Joan, a troubled young woman who, for reasons unknown, is frantically headed toward the school. Their stories are told in interlacing arcs, which intersect in the film’s terrifying climax.

This film has atmosphere for days.

Staying Vertical (NR) — Screenwriter Leo (Damien Bonnard) wanders the French countryside in search of a story. He meets shepherdess Marie (India Hair), with whom he almost immediately has a child.

Marie promptly leaves him and the baby behind, and Leo spends the rest of the film exploring relationships with the quirky villagers, still in pursuit of a tale to tell.

Very explicit sexual scenes, including live, unvarnished childbirth, make Staying Vertical a film strictly for hardy grown-ups.

DOG OF THE WEEK Rupture (NR) — Brought to you by director Steven Shainberg,

Rupture is the story of a mysterious organization that abducts single mom Renee (Noomi Rapace) off the side of the road.

They subject her to intense interrogation and explore her deep fear of spiders.

The abductors’ plan to “rupture” Renee’s genetic code, unleashing the monster within, goes awry (or does it?), but not before Terrible Things have been revealed.

“You have something very special in you,” they tell Renee. And you, too, must have something very special in you: the ability to sit through an hour and 41 minutes of this unimaginative mess of a movie.

With genetics experimentation, alien attributes and torture, there should be something to work with here, right?

Nope. This film is all build and no structure. Spare yourself — and the spiders — the disappointment.

Whiskey paradise: Distill it and they will come?

L

exington County natives Jessica and Phil Crouch are treading family ground with their distlling business. Jessica’s grandfather was a distiller and Phil became interested in it on another job.

In this interview, the two entrepreneurs answer Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bellune’s questions.

Q. How did the two of you become interested in distilling whiskeys?

A. I worked at Anson Mills, an organic grain mill in downtown Columbia for four and a half years.

While there, I worked with all kinds of grains for food products. My hobby outside of work was home brewing. I loved the variety of flavors from grains in food and beer and wanted to explore that in distillation.

Q. How did you get started in your kitchen?

A. There’s no way to explain this without acknowledging that distilling without a license is illegal. That being said, there wasn’t any way locally for me to learn the process, so I learned from books and quietly starting “practicing.”

When I met Jessica, I was glad that my hobby didn’t alarm her. In fact, our first Christmas together she gave me a new still. Her grandfather was also a distiller so she had a family history with distillation.

Q. How are you growing your business?

A. We started by distilling whiskeys, but have since started distilling brandies from local fruits and rum from local sugar cane. We partner with local farms like Geechie Boy Mill on Edisto Island. They are growing heirloom or regionally traditional products and feature their work with our spirits.

South Carolina has a rich agricultural history, distillation is deeply rooted in history and farming so we view growing our business as an agricultural pursuit.

This is evident when you visit our tasting room,. We have a variety of spirits and offer tours of our facility along with a tasting. Every week we meet new people interested in local spirits.

We’re growing the business by focusing locally and engaging with customers personally. People like to know who grows and distills their whiskey.

Jessica and Phil Crouch started their business in, of all places, their kitchen at home. And it turned into a giant distillery.

Q. Where do you see the business going over the next five years?

A. It’s been suggested that craft distilling is 10-15 years behind the trend of craft brewing. I think that’s true. Over the next five years we’ll see some local laws changing to help better serve customers.

Those same changes happened on the beer side years ago and led to an explosion of breweries in S.C. I think we’ll be able to capitalize on those changes to improve our tour/ tasting experience and expand our outside sales.

Q. How about your personal story? Growing up? Meeting Jessica?

A. Jessica and I will be married four years this November. We’re both South Carolina natives.

She grew up in Gaston and I grew up in West Columbia, where we live now. I attended USC before working at Anson Mills.

I developed my interest in grains and agriculture while working at the mill.

In fact, as a way to extend the life of our grains and to reflect traditional farming practices, we raise heritage hogs with our spent whiskey mash on the same land where her grandfather distilled and farmed years ago.

Jessica attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, then USC for graduate school. She works at USC now so her involvement at the distillery is strictly nights and weekends but if you stop by the tasting room on a Saturday, we will both be here pouring tastes and giving tours.

The Stage is Set: A look at the 2017 Big South Tournament From BigSouthSports.com

CHARLOTTE — For the first time since 2003, Winthrop is the No. 1 seed in the 2017 Big South Baseball Championship presented by Hardee’s, which will be contested May 23-27 at Lexington County Stadium in Lexington.

The Eagles captured their first outright regular-season championship since 2003 and fourth overall.

Winthrop, which finished the Big South season in first-place with a 17-7 conference record, will attempt to win its fifth Big South Championship and first since 2005.

The Big South Championship tournament is a double-elimination format and features eight squads competing for the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals — highlighted by a "Winner-Take-All” championship game on Saturday, May 27, at 3 p.m. that will be televised live on ESPNU for the second straight year.

Coastal Carolina won last year's tournament in its debut in Lexington. It was the Chanticleers' final appearance in the Big South tournament before departing for the Sunbelt Conference and went on to claim the College World Series title.

Liberty finished a game behind Winthrop at 16-8 and earned the No. 2 seed.

The Flames will seek their first tournament crown since the 2013 season.

Presbyterian College will be in the same pod, as it earned the No. 3 seed with a 15-9 league record.

The Blue Hose have qualified for the Big South’s postseason for just the second time and the No. 3

seed marks their highest.

Outfielder Brett Auckland of Chapin was recently named the Big South Player of the Week.

High Point finished the regular-season with a 1311 league mark to claim the No. 4 seed.

The Panthers closed the year with a series win over Maryland and will seek their first tournament title in program history.

Radford, UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb finished tied for fifth-place at 11-13.

Because the three teams did not play each other in 2017, the first tiebreaker of head-to-head results among the tied teams cannot be used.

The next step is record vs. conference opponents occupying the highest position in the final standings in which the tied teams played the same amount of times.

All three teams played first-place Winthrop. Radford and Asheville finished

1-2 against the Eagles, while GWU went 0-3.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs slide down to the No. 7 seed, and the tiebreak is reduced to a two-way tie between the Highlanders and Bulldogs.

RU garnered the higher seed based on its 2-1 series win over UNC Asheville — slotting the Highlanders as the No. 5 seed and the Bulldogs landing in the No. 6 spot.

Campbell rounds out the tournament field at the No. 8 seed, as the Fighting Camels closed the regular season with a 10-14 league mark.

Charleston Southern and Longwood finished behind CU with a 9-15 and 7-17 conference records, respectively, and did not qualify for the tournament.

The tournament was set to begin Tuesday, May 23, but rain delays pushed the opening round to a Wednesday start.

The complete Conference Championship schedule appears below, and all games Tuesday-Thursday will be video streamed live for free on the Big South Network.

Friday’s action will be carried on ESPN3.

It’s a Dog’s Life Piercing questions

The students in my thirdgrade class were bombarding me with questions about my newly pierced ears.

“Does the hole go all the way through?”

“Yes.” “Did it hurt?”

“Just a little.”

“Did they stick a needle through your ears?”

“No, they used a special gun.”

Silence followed, and then one solemn voice called out, “How far away did they stand?”

Painting the porch A woman down on her luck is walking through a well-to-do neighborhood looking for odd jobs to do when she approaches a large house.

She goes up to the house, rings the bell and the owner comes to the door. He asks the lady what he can do for her.

The lady tells him of her situation, that she is down on her luck and wants to know if he has any odd jobs that she could do.

The man thinks about it for a second and then remembers that he has been wanting his porch painted.

He asks the woman if she paints.

The woman says, “Sure, I’ll do anything.”

The man replies, “Well, I have been wanting my porch painted, how much would you charge?”

Responding quickly she says, “I don’t know. Say ... $50?”

“Sounds good,” he says.

“Go ahead and get started.”

He closes the door and walks back inside. His wife asks him who was at the door, and he explains about the woman and tells his wife that the woman agreed

to paint the porch for $50. “$50?” asks the wife, “but that porch goes around the full length of our house.

It will take at least a day.

You really should pay her more.”

“But that’s all she said she wanted,” he responds.

Thirty minutes later, they hear a knock on the door.

The man answers the door and the woman is there and she tells him that she’s done.

With a surprised look on his face he says, “I can’t believe it, you’re already done painting the entire porch??”

She looks at him and says, “Yes, and by the way it’s not a Porsche it’s a Ferrari.”

Church hostages The Sunday sermon had gone on and on ... and on.

And a little girl, who really had been trying to behave

Mussolini & those tardy trains: Did he really make them run on time?

T

hink quick: when I say Benito Mussolini, what comes to mind? Bad guy. Bellicose. Bald.

The man who styled himself Il Duce (The Leader) was all those.

And more.

Yet 72 years after he was shot and hanged upside down before an angry mob, one remnant of his legacy still lingers. “He made the trains run on time.”

But did he really?

Viewed from the 21st Century, the father of Fascism looks like a cartoon character. Big chested, big jawed, big talker, a man able to strut while sitting MARK POWELL down.

He had a thing for balconies, where he loved addressing cheering crowds for hours.

It was easy to draw huge crowds when attendance was mandatory and cheering was “encouraged” by the Blackshirts, street thugs loyal only to the dictator himself.

But in the 1920s and 30s Mussolini was viewed by some in the U.S. and Europe as the face of the future, a powerful figure who took bold action and got things done.

As the world sank into the grip of the Great Depression, many people at home and abroad wondered if Mussolini personified things to come.

His claim to fame, the one that stood head and shoulders above all others was, “He made the trains run on time.”

From the minute the first steam engine chugged into Italy, its rail system was “challenged.”

Italians never developed the iron discipline that American, British and German rail barons brought to the Iron Horse.

When World War I ended, Italy’s railways were in shambles. Tracks were in disrepair and timetables were a joke.

Then Mussolini burst onto the scene, bellowing that he would make

everything right — including the country’s chaotic rail service. Soon people were saying over and over, “The trains are running on time.”

But did they really?

Sort of.

Like all dictators everywhere, Mussolini knew the value of good propaganda. And he made sure he got lots of it. His minions cranked out miles and miles of press releases trumpeting his achievements.

Mussolini did indeed spend money and effort on improving rail beds and imposing a certain degree of order on Italy’s rail lines.

But it was almost entirely focused on those used by foreign visitors.

That was the Blackshirts again, making sure Italians stayed in line while on the move.

Whenever the disappearance of personal freedom in Italy was mentioned, the answer was always the same: “The trains are running on time!” What about the dictator’s aggressive foreign policy? “But the trains are running on time!”

It was the trains, always the trains,

as if that one achievement made everything else OK. And so it went until Mussolini teamed up with a neighbor and unleashed World War II. Then the trains brought in hundreds of thousands of German troops, eventually leading to Italy’s military defeat and Mussolini’s downfall and death.

Still, whenever Mussolini’s name comes up nearly 75 years later, someone always adds, “But remember, he made the trains run on time.”

Except, of course, that he didn't.

Proof that if you repeat a lie often enough, people eventually accept it as fact.

Nature-loving snuff sniffer took his vice with great style

T

his small silver box was made in Vienna in 1840. It bears the hallmarks of a known silversmith of this period and is wrought of high grade silver – 990/1000 – an even purer alloy than sterling, which is 925/1000.

Made for a patron of the arts and a lover of nature, this small box is a nearly perfect rendering of a turtle. One look separates it from the mundane into something very special.

The turn of the head, the spread of each foot in motion, the tiny details of scales, leathery skin as well as the perfectly rendered shell make this a miniature masterpiece in silver.

The shell has a hinge at the neck that allows the shell to be lifted. The interior is very smooth. Many times has a human finger moved within in its confines. Used as a snuff box, this box would have been carried in the pocket of a person who loved the calming beauty of nature – a feeling easily conjured and reflected on with one look at this box.

It is so small that it sits easily in the palm of one’s hand. It is thickly cast so it has a heft to it that give it an ease of use. It is very easy to see it becoming a “worry stone” – something reached for in times of emotional distress – a secret object with a special soothing power given only to its owner.

A tiny piece such as this is uncommon, its owner emboldened by its appeal on more than one level. How fascinated we are to see a turtle in nature, and this fascination is repeated in this silver keepsake.

ndroids have an added feature over the iPhone.

You can place your application icons wherever you want on your home screens and you can add widgets to your screens.

To move an icon just hold your finger down on the icon itself and it will give you the option to move it around or delete it.

Deleting the icon will not delete the application itself.

To add an icon from your Apps, find the application icon in the Apps section and hold down the icon.

It will change to show the icon hovering over a home screen.

If you place an icon over the top of another icon it will automatically create a folder with both icons inside of it.

This way you can save space but have all your icons at easy reach.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 358.14 (full pool is 360.00), and surface water temperatures have dropped from the low to mid-70s back into the mid-to upper 60s after the recent rains. The lake is also significantly more stained.

There are still Lake Murray bass that are spawning on Lake Murray, particularly out on the main lake, but most bass fishermen are thinking about a different spawning species–blueback herring.

In the CATT spring final recently, tournament angler Andy Wicker reports that the

winners (and his brothers) Daniel and Gary McGlohorn rode a strong herring bite to 22 pounds of fish, with most of their weight coming on topwater lures fished off main lake points. In addition to fish, the anglers were also stacked up out there.

On windy days like Saturday that bite is a little better and can last longer, but still most of their weight came before 9 a.m.

There are still some other ways to catch fish, such as in pockets or on buzzbaits, but the shallow herring bite is pret-

ty much wide open right now.

On the catfish front, Captain Chris Simpson (864992-2352) reports that the bite is relatively unchanged and fish are still super scattered throughout the lake and across a wide range of depths.

People are catching fish anchored on humps as shallow as just a few feet, and catching them drifting as deep as 45 feet.

Herring and perch are working best but look for stinkbait to get better with the warming. Chris only rates the bite as “fair” right now.
