Large southern tea pot carries icon filial design

What’s new on Facebook

T

his silver tea pot was made in Charleston, SC, in 1810. It was forged during a time where silver was most likely hand crafted with little or no machine work involved in its production.

A close look will show an unusual inverted design pressed inward onto its surface. This deliberate act of decoration made a simple circular form into an eyecatching design.

This pot rests on a circular base which gives it a much needed stability when it held burning hot liquid.

YOU WILL NOTICE the wooden handle which, although beautiful, exists as a barrier to intense heat.

This is a large pot, meant to serve six people without needing to be refilled. This large size is unusual for the period of 1800, as most people were enjoying tea on their breakfast tray or in a more intimate setting than a large tea pot would imply.

Tea and it’s accessories were costly and thus not often shared with large groups.

IT IS INTERESTING to note that most early “teas,” as we think of them, were served in the bedroom. This custom was a practical one as the bedroom was often the cleanest and warmest room in the home. The bedroom was often the one room with the luxury of curtains, further blocking the rough world outside. It becomes easy to think of tea served in this manner when all factors of 1800 are

considered.

The most special part of this tea pot is the handmade silver palmetto that rests on its lid and functions as the finial. It is wrought of coin silver. This palmetto was crafted in multiple small pieces that come together to form an unforgettable, iconic image we still use over 200 years later.

There is no doubt to the delight this finial would bring to the early tea table. The combination of this specific design element along with the unusual inverted design of the tea pot form a lasting impression, unique to early South Carolina.

You can even send money via Messenger. And the best part, it is all free.

To send a file, just look at the bottom of the Messenger popup and click the grey paperclip. To send money, find the grey dollar sign at the bottom of the popup.

Twitter is known for only allowing 140 characters but Facebook lets you type virtually all you want.

Bass: Fair. Captain Doug Lown reports that cool temperatures and wind have made for some tough fishing, but expect a lot of fish to move up next week on the full moon. Smaller soft plastic baits will catch fish.

Striper: Good. Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that striper are scattered out around the lake from 3-50 feet of water.

Free-lines, planer boards, and cut bait fishing have all been catching fish.

Crappie: Fair to good. Captain Brad Taylor reports that a lot of post-spawn crappie are pulling out to deeper docks, bridges and brush.

Catfish: Fair. Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reports that catfish have backed out into deeper water with the cool weather but they will take cut bait.

Create a Legacy Contact In years past, Facebook has taken a lot of flack for not allowing people to have access to a deceased person’s Facebook account.

It really is a matter of privacy for Facebook. But to help with that Facebook has created the Legacy Contact.

Under Settings -> Security -> Legacy Contact you can determine who can access your Facebook should you die.

Mute someone on Facebook Simply go to their page.

Mouse over the button that says Following.

You can choose either See First, Default or Unfollow. The Unfollow feature allows you to stay friends with a person while not seeing anything they post unless you visit their page.

Tea Time A little 3-year-old girl was playing with her miniature tea set. Her father was in the living room and her mother was out shopping.

The little girl came out to the living room and offered her father a cup of tea, which was in fact just water. He thought this was really cute, so she did it several more times.

When the mother came home, the father had the mother stop and watch the little tea ritual, as her daughter brought the father another cup of tea (water) and he drank it.

The mother said, “Very nice. But has it occurred to you that the only place she can reach to get water is the toilet?”

God Time A man is trying to understand the nature of God, time, and the Universe. He asks God, “How long is a billion years to you?”

God says, “A billion years is like a second to me.”

The man asks, “Well, how much is a billion dollars to you?”

God says, “A billion dollars is like a penny to me.”

So the man says, “God, can I have a penny?”

And God replies, “In a sec.”

The Funeral An older lady passed away recently. She’d never been married, and she specifically asked that her casket service not have any male pallbearers.

Her contract with the funeral parlor stated: “They never took me out when I was alive, so they sure won’t be taking me out when I’m dead.”

Smart-Alec Parrot One of the entertainers on a cruise ship was a magician. Since the passengers

were different each week, the magician always had a new audience. So he always did the same tricks.

The captain’s parrot, however, was stationed in the performance hall, and observed the magicians tricks week after week.

Being a wise old bird, he eventually figured out all the magician’s secrets.

Then, irritatingly, he started heckling during the show. “Hey, why is every card the same? It’s in his cape pocket! It’s a different rabbit!”

The magician was fuming, but It was the captain’s parrot so he couldn’t really do anything.

One terrible day, however, the ship had a boiler explosion and sank. The magician wound up on a small raft in the middle of the Atlantic with, as luck would have it, the captain’s parrot.

They glared at each other with visible hatred but didn’t say a word. This went on for several days.

Finally on the tenth day, the parrot couldn’t take it any longer. Exasperated, he said, “Okay, I give up.

Where’s the ship?”

The Devil Two young boys were whispering outside the church after hearing a scary sermon on the devil.

The first one said, “Satan sounds awful. Do you think he’s real?”

The second boy said, “I don’t know, but remember how Santa Claus turned out? It’s probably just your dad.”

Operating Room Things you don’t want to hear as you lie on the operating table waiting for the anesthesia to kick in: “Okay, Dr. Stiglitz, you’re on. I’ll prove I can remove this gall bladder with my

eyes closed and one hand tied behind my back.”

Whale Story A teacher asked her class what they knew about whales. One little girl spoke up and said that Jonah was swallowed by a whale.

The teacher smiled and said she didn’t think that was very likely, because even though whales can be big, their throats are not big enough to swallow a man.

But the little girl was adamant, and maintained that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. The teacher was getting impatient, and reiterated that this was physically unlikely.

But the girl was unmoved, and said that when she got to heaven, she would ask Jonah.

“But what if Jonah went to hell?” the teacher asked.

The girl replied, “Then you ask him.”

Man Brain A husband and wife had been shopping at a large mall most of the day. The wife realized that she’d completely lost track of her husband. After searching all over, she finally called his cell and said, “I’ve looked everywhere. Where are you?”

He replied, “Baby, remember that jewelers store where you saw the matching diamond pendants and went all gushy for them, and I couldn’t afford ‘em then, so I swore I’d get them for you someday?”

The wife, feeling all warm and happy inside, said, “I do remember that, Darling.”

Her husband said, “Well, I’m in the sports bar right across from that shop.”

Snail Travail A man is sitting, reading quietly, when he hears a loud knock on the door.

He looks around to make sure, but sees nothing, nobody. He glances down at his feet and there’s a snail on his stoop. He picks up the snail and heaves it across the street into some bushes.

A year passes.

One night, the man is sitting and reading when there’s a loud knock on the door. He opens the door and sees nothing. Then he looks down at his feet and sees a snail.

The snail says, “What the heck was that all about?”

Adam and Eve

Four men are debating the nationality of Adam and Eve. One is from France, another is a Brit, another an Israeli, and the last is from Russia.

The Frenchman declares that Adam and Eve must have been French because they went without clothes.

The Brit says it’s much more likely they were English, because only a true English gentleman would have donated a rib.

The Israeli says, no, Adam and Eve were created in God’s holy land, which means they were Jewish.

The Russian laughs and says they’re all crazy. Only Russians, he says, would have no clothes, such plain food, and still think it’s paradise.

Hospital Chatter The guy in the next hospital bed was in traction.

He had bandages all over his body. I asked him what kind of work he did.

He said, “I used to be a professional window washer, but I gave it up.”

“When was that?” I asked.

“Oh, about halfway down.”

Old Folks’ Bus Driver A tour bus full of older folks has been cruising

along a freeway. In the seat right behind the driver is a sweet, kind lady. She leans forward, asks the driver if he’d like a snack, and offers him a little cup full of almonds.

The driver’s grateful and he wolfs them down. After twenty minutes, this sweet lady leans forward again and passes him another cup full of almonds. Over the next hour this happens three more times.

Finally they stop for a restroom, and the driver asks this kind, generous old lady why she and her friends aren’t eating the almonds themselves. She tells him that because of their old teeth, they’re not able to chew them.

“So why on earth would you buy them?” he asks.

To which the old lady answers, “Because we love to suck the chocolate off them.”

Doing Nothing My wife asked, “What are you doing today?”

I replied, “Nothing.”

She said, “You did that yesterday.”

I said, “I wasn’t finished.”

PICKS OF THE WEEK

“The Witch” (R) -- In the misty, muddy, superstitious days of the early Puritan colonists, a family trying to make it on their own is terrorized by an evil presence lurking beyond the pines. A pious father (Ralph Ineson) takes his wife (Kate Dickie from HBO’s “Game of Thrones”) and children away from the pilgrim community he feels has lost touch with the Lord. Settled on their own remote piece of land, the adolescent daughter (Anya Taylor-Joy) has a crisis of faith while paranoia entangles the secluded family.

It’s a slow, creepy build-up set on a sturdy foundation of sickly gloom and rigid morals. The family isn’t just harassed by whatever baby-snatching malevolent creature dwells in the woods, but also doubt, suspicion and a frenzied desire to scourge themselves of all sin. It perfectly captures the sense of being lost in the woods and outmatched by things you can’t see.

“Dirty Grandpa” (R) -- Robert De Niro

doesn’t just accelerate the decline of his career, he stomps on the pedal and awkwardly bellows expletives in a mad dash to make audiences forget how great he is.

This latest effort has the 73-year-old playing Dick Kelly, a retiree who drags his unfun lawyer grandson (Zac Effron) on a wild ride through Daytona Spring Break.

The result is like chugging an oversoaked cocktail of drugs, obscenities, sex and casual racism.

You can’t help but notice how hard the movie tries to imitate more successful raunchy comedies, especially by trying to make room for some heavy-handed male bonding and sentiments about the nature of growing up. De Niro doesn’t seem to be holding back -- he’s giving this lowbrowromp thing a real try -- but there’s an expectation that every f-bomb he drops is comedy gold.

“A Perfect Day” (R) -- In the war-torn Balkans of 1995, a group of aid workers fight their own smaller battle and trying to keep some semblance of sanity. Over 24 hours, we watch foreign humanitarians Mambru, B and Sophie (Benicio Del Toro, Tim Robbins and Melanie Thiery) search the warzone for a length of rope so they can fish a dead body out of a well before it contaminates the water. Getting by with gallow-rific humor, the team encounters red tape, tragedy, confusion, an old lover and deadly landmines. It’s an intriguing look at a different side of war, more fo-

cused on the bullet-holes left behind than the battles.

“The Program” (R) -- This drama about cycling superstar Lance Armstrong (Ben Foster) makes the right moves in casting, but doesn’t make it over the line in fleshing out its real-life subjects. Armstrong overcame cancer before returning to cycling to smash records and rack up wins at the Tour de France. His amazing performance drew suspicions from all over, including journalist David Walsh (Chris O’Dowd), who doggedly investigated allegations of drug use and blood doping while the rising Armstrong categorically denied them. The movie hits the main points of Armstrong’s career, but misses

That said, Tubman is obviously no match for the Founders and presidents on the currency now. But if power and influence are the only metric, how do you recognize the contribution of all those who were made deliberately powerless? Tubman is properly understood as a symbol of all the nameless persons held in bondage in early America and of our country’s greatest reform movement, abolitionism.

Meanwhile, Andrew Jackson shouldn’t be relegated to the ash heap of history. Despite his flaws (he was a slave owner who causally disregarded the humanity of American Indians), he is a formidable American figure who, as a general, won the War of 1812 and, as president, firmly defended the Union from nascent Southern secessionism. If the standards of the 21st century are to be retroactively applied to every significant figure of our past, few will pass the test.

One of the ironies of American slavery is that it made clear — self-evident, one might say — to those suffering under it the deep truth of the natural rights that undergird the American experiment. Tubman recalled thinking prior to her escape, “There’s two things I’ve got a right to, and these are, Death or Liberty — one or the other I mean to have.”

Is it possible to utter a more American sentiment? In an era of ethnic and gender bean counting, everyone wants to keep score, but Harriet Tubman belongs to all of us. She won’t just appear on the twenty, but grace it.

Harriet Tubman was literally a freedom fighter. The “Moses” of the Underground Railroad liberated herself and dozens of others from slavery over the years in a biopic-worthy life of bravery and idealism.

She has now been selected to eventually replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill, bumping him to the back in the worst defeat for Old Hickory since John Quincy Adams “stole” the presidency from him in 1824.

The political imperative at work here is obvious — find a woman, preferably a minority, to downgrade one of the dead white males dominating the currency. But the images on the nation’s currency aren’t set in stone, and tastes change. Surely some fans of Grover Cleveland were rubbed the wrong way when Jackson supplanted him on the $20 in 1928 (Cleveland himself, improbably, replaced George Washington). And Tubman is inarguably an exemplary figure.

She escaped from a Maryland plantation in 1849, walking some 90 miles to her freedom. Tubman’s story has been repeated to generations of schoolchildren and is so well-worn — she was guided by the North Star and aided by the Underground Railroad — that it is easy to forget the terror and pathos of it.

Tubman knew the brutality of slavery. As a young woman, she had been grievously injured by a metal weight thrown by an overseer. She left her

Lexington rebuilding after 28-senior loss

Lexington High head football coach Josh Stepp has three simple goals for spring.

“Build some depth at each position, stay healthy and get better everyday,” he said.

Coming off the winningest season in program history, the Wildcats find themselves in a rebuilding mode.

Gone are 28 seniors, including 2,000-plus yards rusher Slade

Carroll, quarterbacks Brandon Blake and Donny Baker, wide receiver Tyler Schadewald, linebacker Trey Mitchell and placekicker Christian Kingsley.

They led Lexington to a school record in victories and consecutive wins (both 13) and the Class 4A Lower State title.

The Wildcats are moving into an even more competitive Region 5-5A with current Chronicle Country Class 4A teams Dutch Fork, Irmo, River Bluff and White Knoll and including Spring Valley

and Blythewood.

They will open the season Aug. 19 at West Florence.

At the start of spring practice, sophomore Chase Crouch is taking the lead snaps at quarterback.

“Chase got to sit behind both of those guys last year so he learned a great deal from them,” Stepp said.

“He has a great skill set and understands the offense inside and out.”

As for a replacement for Carroll, Stepp plans to use a “Run-

ning Back by Committee” approach and believes the wide receiving corps has some young players who have to step up and play big roles.

“Spring practice is always a great time for us and our players,” Stepp said.

“It gets us back in the swing of things and working hard together towards our main goal of winning a championship. It’s just another step in our process of becoming a “team” and coming together.”

Lemon Raspberry Pie 8 servings Prep time: 45 minutes Start to finish: 3 hours 45 minutes Crust

1 Pillsbury refrigerated pie crust (from 14.1-ounce box), softened as directed on box

1 teaspoon flour

2 tablespoons finely chopped pecans Filling 1/2 cup sugar

2 tablespoons cornstarch 1/2 cup water

2 tablespoons margarine or butter

1 egg yolk, beaten 1/4 to 1/3 cup lemon juice Topping

2 3-ounce packages cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup powdered sugar 1/2 teaspoon lemon extract

1 8-ounce carton frozen whipped topping, thawed

1 tablespoon milk

3 cups fresh raspberries or frozen raspberries without syrup, thawed, dried on paper towels Mint sprigs, if desired

Heat oven to 450°F. Prepare crust according to package directions for unfilled one-crust pie using 9-inch pie pan. Press pecans into bottom of pie crust-lined pan. Generously prick crust with fork. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool completely.

In small saucepan, combine sugar and cornstarch; blend well.

Stir in water, margarine and egg yolk. Cook over medium heat until mixture boils and thickens, stirring constantly. Boil 1 minute. Remove from heat. Stir in lemon juice. Pour into cooled crust. Refrigerate 1 hour.

In small bowl, beat cream cheese, powdered sugar and lemon extract until smooth. Beat in whipped topping at low speed until well blended. Add milk; mix until smooth and of spreading consis­ tency. Spread thin layer of topping mixture around edge of crust.

Reserve 4 raspberries for garnish.

Arrange remaining rasp­berries over top of filling. Spread remain­ ing topping over raspberries.

Garnish with mint sprigs and reserved raspberries. Refrigerate 2 hours before serving. Store in refrigerator.

Make Crusts Extra Special When making a top crust for pies, these tips can help you make them look extra special.

Glossy Upper Crust: Brush the dough with slightly beaten egg white (if desired, sprinkle with sugar, too) before baking.

Sweet Glazed Top: Brush the top pastry with a small amount of water, and sprinkle with granulated or coarse sugar before baking.

Pretty Cutouts: Cut shapes from the top crust with a canapé cutter or a knife before placing the top crust over the filling. With water or beaten egg, moisten the back of each cutout and set the design, moistened side down, on the crust.

1 box (14.1 ounces) Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts, softened as directed on box Filling

6 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (6 medium) 3/4 cup sugar

2 tablespoons all-purpose

flour 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 tablespoon lemon juice Heat oven to 425°F. Place 1 pie crust in ungreased 9-inch glass pie plate. Press firmly against side and bottom.

In large bowl, gently mix filling ingredients; spoon into crust-lined pie plate. Top with second crust.

Wrap excess top crust under bottom crust edge, pressing edges together to seal; flute. Cut slits or shapes in several places in top crust.

Bake 40 to 45 minutes or until apples are tender and crust is golden brown. Cover edge of crust with 2- to 3-inch-wide strips of foil after first 15 to 20 minutes of baking to prevent excessive browning. Cool on cooling rack at least 2 hours before serving.

Tip: Two cans (21 ounces each) apple pie filling can be substituted for the filling.

Lemon Raspberry Pie

Fresh Berry Cream Tart 8 servings Prep time: 15 minutes Start to finish: 2 hours 55 minutes Crust

1 Pillsbury refrigerated pie crust (from 14.1-ounce box), softened as directed on box Filling

1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened 1/3 cup sugar

1 tablespoon orange-flavored liqueur or orange juice

4 cups assorted fresh whole berries (small strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and/or blackberries) 1/3 cup red currant jelly, melted Heat oven to 450°F. Prepare pie crust as directed on package for one-crust baked shell using 9-inch tart pan with removable bottom.

Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool completely.

In small bowl, combine cream cheese, sugar and liqueur; beat until smooth and well blended. Spread cream cheese mixture evenly in cooled baked shell. Top with berries; brush berries with melted jelly to glaze. Refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving. Store in refrigerator.

The Secret Behind Truman’s Famous Balcony Why Harry Really Built It

In February 1946, Harry Truman summoned the White House’s chief usher to the second floor Oval Study. He pointed to the Washington Monument. “That’s a magnificent sight,” he said, then dropped his bombshell.

“I’m going to put a balcony there.”

This was huge. While presidents made changes to the White House’s interior,

none had touched its exterior since Andrew Jackson added the north portico in 1829.

Presidents just didn’t monkey around with the White House’s appearance.

Period.

Harry Truman knew his proposal would ignite a firestorm. He had his arguments ready. But he had a deeply personal reason that he kept to himself.

Architects said a balcony would make the south front more architecturally pleasing. The six stone columns’ vertical lines look better when broken by a horizontal line, such as a balcony (wink, wink).

Then there was the savings.

The mansion’s first floor sweltered during Washington’s tropical summers. So ugly canvas awnings were installed over the ground level windows to provide relief. But when they were hauled down in the fall, they were so filthy they couldn’t be reused, mean-

ing a new batch had to be purchased every year.

That cost the government $20,000 a decade – more than $225,000 in today’s dollars. Adding a balcony would save Uncle Sam money.

Truman got the cash by cutting the president’s household account. Then he built his balcony.

When the fuss finally died down, even the critics grudgingly admitted it was an improvement. And the American people gave it a thumbs up. Republicans jokingly “thanked” Truman for improving the house for the man whom they were sure would replace him two years later, Thomas Dewey. But things didn’t turn out that way.

Just days after Truman’s legendary 1948 upset reelection, he had to move out of the house he had fought to keep occupying.

The White House was in dire danger of immediate collapse. After inspecting

the structure, engineers ordered to him to leave at that very minute. (That’s how close we came to losing the beloved landmark.)

It was gutted and rebuilt.

One of the few features that survived: the Truman Balcony. It was so well-built, it wasn’t touched.

The eleven post-Truman presidents considered the balcony their favorite spot.

It is, literally, the White House’s back porch.

Which brings us to Harry Truman’s secret reason for building it.

Truman’s passion for his wife Bess is one of the presidency’s greatest love stories.

He fell in love with her in elementary school in Independence, Missouri in 1890.

Bess loved Harry, but hated the presidential spotlight.

She jumped at any chance to return home to Independence, where she spent the summer of 1945, leaving a

lonely Harry in the White House.

Their daughter Margaret wrote, “One of the chief pleasures of [the Independence house] was its back porch …” where the family whiled away summer evenings “secure from prying eyes.”

Harry built added the Truman Balcony hoping it would lure his wife into staying with him. Bess appreciated the gesture, but it wasn’t the same as home.

Summer 1946 found her back in Independence.

Lexington 2 was wellrepresented at the SC Philharmonic Youth Orchestra’s last concert of the season, Sunday.

Students from BrooklandCayce and Airport High Schools participated in the concert. It was held at the Koger Center for the Arts in Columbia. Students from public, private and home schools from across the state audition to become members. The group rehearses on Sunday afternoons at the USC School of Music.

Harry Truman wasn’t the first husband to make a bold gesture to keep the Missus happy. And he wasn’t the first to fail.

But it’s a good thing for all of us he tried.
