Lexington, Chapin, Batesburg-Leesville among state’s best athletic programs

Perry Woolbright earned a unique distinction.

He started the 2016-17 school year as Batesburg-Leesville’s head football coach. By February, he was at Lexington High School in the same capacity as well as the athletics direcotr.

By June, he could proudly boast of having played a major role in two schools that finished in the Top Five of their respective South Carolina High School League classifications.

Lexington in Class 5A and Batesburg-Leesville 2A placed fourth along with Chapin in Class 4A in the final Carlisle Cup rankings.

Formerly known as the Director’s Cup, the award is named after John Carlisle, the S.C. Athletic Administrators Association’s Executive Director Emeritus. It honors him for his contributions to forming and developing the organization.

The SCAAA uses a point system which awards points to schools based on their finish in 22 boys’ and girls’ S.C. High School League sports.

Woolbright coached the Panthers to the Class 2A Lower State title and the state runner-up. After he left to replace Josh Stepp at Lexington, Batesburg-Leesville’s girls’ basketball, baseball, softball and girls’ soccer teams won region titles and reached the Lower State finals under athletics director Gary Phillips.

The winning touch followed Woolbright to Lexington. The girls’ soccer team reached the Lower State final for the third -straight year.

The baseball team also advanced to the Lower State final and the boys’ basketball team advanced to the Lower State semifinal.

Prior to Woolbright’s arrival, the girls’ golf team won its state-record 12th state title and first in Class 5A. Lexington was joined in the Class 5A Top 10 by River

Corrupt juror A dishonest lawyer bribed a man on his client’s jury to hold out for a charge of manslaughter, as opposed to the charge of murder which was brought by the state.

The jury was out for several days before they returned with the manslaughter verdict.

The Chapin High School cheer team won its state-record 12th state title overall and first in Class 4A last October.The Lady Eagles

Bluff (6th) and Dutch Fork (7th). Both schools enjoyed a year of first with the Gators’ wrestling team winning in wrestling and the Silver Foxes finishing a perfect 150 championship season in football.

Parisian silver necklace speaks of great love and devotion

his beautiful silver necklace was made in Paris circa 1900. It was wrought by a master silver smith who fashioned hundreds of individual petals and leaves, which were then assembled into intricate floral displays, which were bound into bouquets complete with ribbons and bows highlighting each of the three sections. These sections were then set into outer frames known as bezels, which allowed each section to take on dimensional quality, almost like a small work of art or a miniature.

This particular example is comprised of three such panels, which are assembled together with the addition of handmade links forming a tryptic of sorts worn close around the neck like a choker. As with a more traditional tryptic, the panels reveal a story from section to section.

The outer two panels flank a center section crafted in the form of an oriental fan with the aforementioned flowers. You may remember from other columns that the use of three sections often represents the holy trinity of Father, Son and Holy Ghost. The necklace was likely crafted for a wedding with each flower’s definition as an emotional element in the story.

The main flower used is the “forget me not” with ivy, which both speak of love, devotion and continued growth.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 358.02 (full pool is 360.00), and surface water temperatures are in the mid-70s over much of the lake.

The lake is fairly stained from recent rains.

At times it has been a trying spring for anglers targeting Lake Murray bass, and tournament angler Andy Wicker said that for much of the last month it has looked like the herring spawn might also be a bit of a disappointment for bass fishermen.

However, in the DOT tournament recently on Lake Murray Andy was pleasantly surprised by the bite that he and his tournament partner found. Practicing “on the water” they caught 17 pounds for third place in the 20-boat event, while the winning team managed a little

over 20 pounds.

Andy says that he saw some of the biggest groups of herring he has seen in a while, and on several occasions they saw schools of hundreds of herring swimming across shallow points.

The best action was on the main lake, and they were able to target the fish with typical topwater lures for this time of year

as well as flukes.

They couldn’t catch a bass on swimbaits but managed dozens of striper. In an encouraging sign they caught fish right through the day instead of having the bite die as soon as the sun got up.

Andy suspects that the full moon is accounting for a very strong herring spawn.

In addition to catching striped

bass shallow around herring points, Captain Brad Taylor (803331-1354) reports that a bunch of striper are starting to set up in the main lake about 40-50 feet down where they can be caught on downlined herring.

These fish could be close to the bottom or at that depth over much deeper water.

Early in the morning, he is pulling free-lines and planers boards, and there is also some cut bait fishing around main lake humps.

The best pattern is to move baits from the shallower to deeper parts of the humps as the sun gets up.

Crappie are biting pretty well, and Brad reports that they are having the best success fishing in main lake pockets 10-12 feet down over brush in 15-20 feet of water.

On the catfish front, Captain William Attaway (803-924-0857) reports that it’s a good time to fish for channel catfish on Lake Murray.

Right now the best action is around secondary points, humps, and back in coves, with the best depth range 25-35 feet during the day and 1-15 feet at night.

In large part because of boat traffic night fishing is usually better. At night fish will be exploring fallen timber and riprap – the same types of places they will spawn very soon.

While you can catch probably catch bigger fish on cut bait, you have to deal with the gar and turtles and so William’s preferred bait right now is dip bait.

Internal Grant Highlight: Cell Phone Charging Stations In 2016, Lexington Medical Center Foundation awarded $11,250 to Guest Services for the installation of cellphone charging stations in the OR, ICU, and ED waiting rooms. Cell phone charging stations assist patients’ families who sometimes face long wait times while loved ones are being treated, allowing them to

update friends and family without fears of their cell phone batteries dying.

The stations have been so well received, the Foundation granted additional funding in May 2017 totaling $38,197 to upfit the Labor & Delivery waiting room and Community Medical Centers with the equipment as well.

With kids, there is a lot of research about children needing to breathe through their mouths, to compensate for allergies to milk or foods. We all know that food today isn’t the same as food when we were kids (30 or more years ago…)

This mouth breathing can manifest itself with bleeding gums, dry mouth and grinding teeth. And this could be a predictor of airway and apnea problems in the future.

The inability to breathe properly often results in sudden awakenings throughout the night that interrupt your sleep and prevent you from feeling refreshed throughout the day. As a result, you might find yourself struggling to stay awake during the day or feeling irritable and depressed.

Other signs that you may be experiencing sleep apnea include waking up with a sore throat or dry mouth, memory problems and difficulty concentrating, and urinating frequently throughout the night.

The “Gold Standard” test for Sleep Apnea has always been a physician ordered sleep study, done in a commercial sleep lab. Some practitioners can provide smaller, at home type sleep studies that a patient can wear in the comfort of his own bed. (They even make little portable electromyographs that record the amount you grind your teeth at night!)

Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure, or CPAP for

short, is the most common treatment for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.

In many cases, you’ll experience immediate symptom relief and a huge boost in your mental and physical energy.

The CPAP device is a masklike machine that provides a constant stream of air which keeps your breathing passages open while you sleep. Most CPAP devices are the size of a tissue box.

But 50% of sleep apnea patients are not compliant with their CPAP (that is, they do not or cannot wear them).

So how can your dentist help you get a good night’s sleep? Through the use of a dental sleep device. Most dental devices are acrylic and fit inside your mouth, much like an athletic mouth guard. Others fit around your head and chin to adjust the position of your lower jaw. Two common

oral devices are the mandibular repositioning device and the tongue retaining device.

These devices open your airway by bringing your lower jaw or your tongue forward during sleep.

Dental devices are only effective for mild to moderate sleep apnea. But a dental sleep device is also the most effective appliance to prevent someone from grinding their teeth at night. (As an aside, many patients do not think that they grind their teeth at night, because they snore. Actually, people who snore have such a restless sleep pattern that they often grind their teeth more than those who do not snore!)

There are some possible side effects, like “tensed jaw muscles” or a dry mouth. As long as the device is not worn all day and all night, the “bite” or tooth position will not

change.

At last check, there were at least 98 different dental sleep devices on the market!

A popular device, that I prescribe is called the “Tap-3”.

(Google it if you want to see what this device looks like!) It is very important to get fitted by a dentist who has studied sleep apnea and has advanced training in treating TMJ (jaw joint) problems, so you can be accurately diagnosed and fitted with the appliance. Unfortunately, some physicians and sleep labs have taken to making these devices…and they really don’t know the intricacies of dental impressions or jaw joint anatomy.

The best part of these devices is that they are easy to travel with, and, of course, are silent for your partner!

Change your mind to lose weight

I

n my last article, I was a week into my 21-Day Detox Challenge eliminating sugar, grains and dairy.

I’ve since completed the challenge, feel better and leaner.

And I reset my “normal” again.

As a trainer and a coach, I talk about working on changing your “normal”. If you change how you eat just long enough to drop some pounds before you slip back into eating like you always have, the pounds will start creeping back on. Your “normal” is what got you the extra pounds in the first place.

This is “yo-yo dieting” and it wreaks havoc on your metabolism.

A healthier and longer-term approach to weight loss (and wellness in general) involves changing your mind about how you eat. This requires some patience.

Making incremental improvements by eating with the intent of fueling your body with nutrient dense foods has been proven effective at helping make lasting changes to keep the extra fat off for good.

How do you change your mind about how you eat?

It starts with educating yourself about the nutritional content of the foods you eat.

There are a number of ways to go about this.

One quick and easy way you might try would be to use an online app such as myfitnesspal to log your food and see the nutritional content and calories you consume each day. You get a daily budget for calories, sugar, protein, fat, etc. and it is quite interesting to see how your choices add up each day.

The interesting thing about logging and measuring what you eat is that better choices become easier when you realize that candy bar you were thinking about eating contains more than half the daily recommended amount of sugar.

It’s twice the calories of a cup of carrots and some guacamole which will satisfy your hunger longer.

It helps you begin to evaluate your food choices rather than just mindlessly eating familiar foods without any thought of the consequences.

In our instant gratification society, we’ve become accustomed to immediate results.

The hard truth about long-term fat loss and well-being is that it generally happens slowly and steadily.

If you’re promised a program with quick and massive results that sound too good to be true – beware. It probably is.

Furry Friends Canine flu and what you need to know The Pet Doctor 359-6611

C

anine influenza (also known as dog flu) is a contagious respiratory disease in dogs caused by specific Type A influenza viruses known to infect dogs.

These are called “canine influenza viruses.” Dog flu is a disease of dogs.

No human infections with canine influenza have ever been reported. Two different canine influenza viruses have been isolated in the US. The Influenza A subtype H3N8 was the first virus isolated and there was an outbreak in 2004.

It initially started in greyhounds with cases of an unknown respiratory illness in dogs.

This virus originated from horses where it had been present for 40 years causing equine influenza.

Because of the lack of previous exposure, this virus spread very quickly among greyhounds at the racing tracks and other breeds at the horse tracks. South Carolina was not affected at that time.

In 2015, another canine influenza A virus was reported in the Chicago area, but this time it was a subtype H3N2. This H3N2 canine influenza virus is an avian flu virus that adapted to infect dogs.

Canine influenza A H3N2 virus was first detected in dogs in South Korea in 2007.

This virus seems to have been an avian influenza virus that adapted to infect dogs and has since been reported in China and Thailand.

H3N2 canine influenza has reportedly infected some cats as well as dogs. It was first detected in the United States in April 2015.

The canine H3N2 virus is genetically different from human seasonal H3N2 viruses. It was thought to be transmitted here from a dog from China.

Once again, because of lack of exposure, dogs had little immunity.

Fortunately, although this disease was highly contagious very few serious illnesses and deaths were reported.

About 80% of dogs will show some respiratory symptoms (usually mild) and 5-10 percent of these will show more serious disease and require treatment.

In 2015, the virus spread to different states including Georgia and North Carolina. Two cases were reported in Sum-

merville, SC. Both dogs had just returned from Georgia.

After this outbreak no other cases have been reported in South Carolina.

This is not a reportable disease. A veterinarian is not required to report this to the state veterinarian, but many do their PCR testing through the state lab.

Common symptoms include sneezing, nasal discharge, and frequent coughing that can last for 2 weeks or more. Many dogs have a fever, decreased appetite, and lethargy during the first few days of illness.

Some dogs have more serious disease and pneumonia that requires hospital care.

H3N2 canine influenza virus can cause respiratory infections in cats too. The cats start sneezing and have a nasal discharge but usually do not cough.

H3N2 canine influenza virus is spread by direct contact with a sick dog and by contact with an environment or people that are contaminated with the virus.

Coughing dogs produce invisible virus containing mists that travel more than 20 feet in the air, facilitating rapid spread of virus over distances.

This type of virus transmission contributes to a rapid increase in coughing dogs in a kennel situation.

The virus can survive in the environment (kennel surfaces, food/water bowls, collars/ leashes, toys, beds) or on people’s clothing and hands for 12 to 24 hours before it dies.

It is easily killed by handwashing with soap and water, normal laundering of clothing and bedding, and washing food/water bowls and toys with soap and water.

Most dogs do not have immunity to H3N2 canine influenza virus.

This means that dogs of any breed, age or health status will likely be infected if they are exposed to the virus. Dogs at most risk for exposure are those with a social lifestyle and participate in group events or are housed in communal facilities, especially in communities where the flu is circulating.

This includes dogs in boarding kennels, day care centers, shelters, dog shows, veterinary clinics, pet stores, grooming parlors, dog parks, etc. Dogs that mostly stay at home and walk around the neighborhood are at low risk.

If your dog begins coughing, your dog may have a respiratory infection caused by other respiratory viruses and not H3N2 canine influenza virus.

The diagnosis of canine flu can only be determined by a diagnostic test performed by your veterinarian. If you suspect your pet may have canine flu, following are the steps you

should take.

Call your veterinarian. Do not go to the clinic without calling first. Your dog may have a very contagious infection that can easily spread to other dogs in the clinic.

Tell your veterinarian the following information: Your dog’s symptoms and when they started.

If your dog has been to a dog show, boarding facility, dog day care center, dog park, grooming parlor, or another event with other dogs within the past week.

If your dog was around coughing dogs in the past week.

Your veterinarian will provide specific instructions on when and how to see your dog.

Talk with your veterinarian about performing a diagnostic test to determine if your dog has the flu virus or another virus. This is very important to the care of your dog. The test is performed on swabs of the nose and throat that are submitted to an outside laboratory If your dog is diagnosed with canine flu, most dogs recover at home without any complications. The most important aspect of home care is to keep your dog isolated from all other dogs for 4 weeks.

While dogs recover from illness in about 2 weeks, they can remain contagious to other dogs for up to 4 weeks.

If you have other dogs or cats in the house, then all of them must be isolated in the home for 4 weeks. Your veterinarian will provide instructions on how to monitor the health of all the pets and when to call about concerns.

About 20% of dogs can progress to pneumonia.

Dogs with pneumonia typically have decreased appetite, are very lethargic, and may have labored breathing.

Call your veterinarian if you see these signs. These dogs likely need special hospital care for recovery. Fortunately, the number of dogs that die from H3N2 canine flu is low.

You should also remain aware of any information about confirmed cases of canine flu in your community or communities where you take your dog. At present there has only been one confirmed case is South Carolina though at the time of this writing, I do not

have the location.

If this virus is present in the community, then be careful about exposing your dog to events or facilities with other dogs.

Knowledge and common sense are your best defenses against canine influenza. The most important step is to vaccinate your dog against the canine influenza viruses. Just like human flu vaccines, the canine flu vaccine may not completely prevent infection but will make it less likely. Additionally, if a vaccinated dog does get infected, the disease is likely to be more mild and of shorter duration.

The vaccine can also protect against pneumonia. Talk to your veterinarian about vaccination against H3N2 CIV and other canine influenza viruses.

At present due to demand the vaccine is on backorder though we hope to have it in our hospital this week for dogs at increased risk.

Another statue was taken down nearly 241 years ago.

While the circumstances were different, it was a major moment during the Revolutionary War and is worth revisiting.

First, it demonstrated the old order was being replaced by something new. And perhaps more importantly, it provided lead for much-needed Patriot musket balls.

George's statue was turned into 42,088 bullets. New York's postmaster wrote in a letter that the British troops "…will probably have melted Majesty fired at them."

Interestingly, not all of the statue's remains reached the Litchfield, Conn., foundry where they were transformed into musket balls.

Some Tories (Americans who remained loyal to the British) stole an estimated 1,400 pounds of lead chunks and secretly sank them in nearby Davis Swamp.

Then there was George's head.

The Patriots lopped it off, fired a bullet into it and stuck it atop a pole outside nearby Cox's Tavern.

That final outrage was too much for the Brits. They sent spies to pull it down and bury it.

When they occupied New York days later, they exhumed the

head and sent it to Lord Townshend back in England, "in order to convince them at home of the Infamous Disposition of the Ungrateful people."

Nearly 241 years later, you can now see what the ill-fated statue looked like. A replica was made with painstaking accuracy last year. It is a featured exhibit in the brand new Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, near Independence Hall.

Statues are important symbols.

They are visual reminders of significant people who shaped our shared past.

Toppling them can be a political statement. (Think Lenin's likeness coming down in the Soviet Union's final days and Saddam's statue falling after Baghdad's liberation.)

They can be wartime morale boosters. (As in the case of George III in New York).

And they can become lost legacies when they are snatched away from citizens who grow careless with their culture.
