FISHING REPORT

LAKE MURRAY:

Bass: Fair. Captain Doug Lown reports that first thing in the morning some fish can be found shallow feeding on bait, and later in the day fish can be found around rocky points where they will take Carolina rigs. Throwing topwaters early in the creeks can also catch fish.

Crappie: Excellent. Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that crappie fishing has been very strong with minnows fished over brush in about 15-20 feet of water.

Striped bass: Good. Captain Brad Taylor reports that first thing free lines and planer boards will catch fish, and after that down lines in the 40-foot range have been productive.

Catfish: Good. Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reports that fancasting cut herring and dip baits around humps has been productive for channel catfish.

Gorgeous cut crystal creamer features silver pouring spout This beautiful sterling mounted American Brilliant Period crystal pitcher measures seven inches in height, It was crafted by two artists who were masters of their craft, working together to render a piece worthy of our attention nearly 150 years after the object was new.

It was owned by a Charleston family. It was made in America and features the skilled handiwork of several artists.

There would have been a separate silversmith to craft the beautiful, heavy gauge sterling mount that graces the pouring section of the pitcher. Using silver as the spout was a way of showing cleanliness and also wealth in its use on an “every day’” object. This silver is hallmarked in the usual American fashion of 925/1000 and the name Gorham.

The artist cutting the pattern in to the crystal would have been equally skilled, if not more so.

Charged with crafting a crystal vessel of small size using multiple parts – separate handle, base and two -body – and then decorating it by slash cutting is truly remarkable. The name Hawkes is engraved into the base identifying the maker.

The resulting object is still eye catching today – no small feat in a world where it seems everything is at our fingertips. This object was made before mass production and embodies the skill of those who made it, the taste of those who owned it and the times that allowed it to grace

cidental hits. You can also cancel the distress signal within 10 seconds.

Athena is water-resistant and safe from rain and puddles. It recharges through a micro-usb charger, similar to your phone. So you never have to worry about changing batteries. Each charge should last about 2 weeks.

They have also built in what is called a SilentROAR. So that it doesn’t sound an alarm, but still sends the distress texts in the event of activation.

In a time when we are worried about shootings, bombings and muggings it is nice that someone is trying to find ways to help keep us safe.

Things to Know Before You Shop the Meat Case n There’s no need to pay extra for poultry or pork that’s labeled hormone-free. USDA prohibits farmers from using hormones to raise chicken and pigs. n Nearly all beef cattle, whether raised organically or conventionally, spend the majority of their lives on pastures eating grass. n Purchasing organic, grass-fed and freerange meats does not make them safer to consume. These labels refer to how the animals are raised, but all meat and poultry can contain bacteria that could cause illness. n Most cases of foodborne illness can be prevented with proper processing, hand­ling and cooking of food to destroy bacteria.

Grilled Hawaiian Ham Sandwich

By Amanda Folkens Serves: 1

1 tablespoon brown sugar 1/2 tablespoon seasoning pepper 1 to 2 1/4-inch thick ham slices (about the same thickness as the bread) Cooking spray Pineapple slices (can be fresh or canned)

2 slices sourdough bread

Preheat grill for high heat.

Mix brown sugar with pepper to create a rub mixture.

Using your hands, massage the rub onto both sides of the slices of ham. Ham slices should be completely covered (front and back) with brown sugar mix.

Place ham slices on sheet of lightly greased foil, then place onto grill.

On separate sheet of greased foil, lay pine­ apple slices out, uncovered.

Cook for 6 to 8 minutes or until brown caramelization appears around edges of ham and pineapple.

Remove ham and pineapple from heat and assemble onto toasted sourdough bread.

Beef Rack of Ribs

By Danell Kalcevic Serves: 4 to 6 Salt (to taste)

1 tablespoon black pepper (to taste)

1 tablespoon seasoned garlic salt (to taste) Cayenne pepper (optional) 1 to 2 racks of beef ribs (number of racks based on number of people)

1 tablespoon yellow mustard 1/3 cup brown sugar One bottle of favorite barbeque sauce The night before serving, prepare rub for beef ribs (salt, pepper, seasoned garlic salt and op­tional cayenne pepper). Sprinkle both sides of ribs and then rub vigorously. Wrap in plas­ tic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

In the morning, place on medium tempera­ ture grill and spread yellow mustard and brown sugar on each side of the ribs. Grill for 5 to 8 minutes until each side is slightly browned and caramelized.

Remove ribs from grill and slice with sharp knife. Place individual ribs in a crock pot on low. Add one bottle of your favorite barbeque sauce. Let simmer 6 to 8 hours.

Country Barbecue Potatoes

By Nicole Small Serves: 4 to 6

2 pounds small red potatoes

2 tablespoons butter, melted

1 teaspoon honey

3 teaspoons seasoned salt 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon pepper Preheat oven to 450°F. Coat 9 x 13 baking pan with nonstick spray.

Cut potatoes into small to medium–sized pieces and put in pan.

Melt butter and honey, and then drizzle over potatoes. Sprinkle with seasoned salt, salt, garlic powder and pepper. Toss well to coat.

Bake, uncovered, for 25 to 30 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and golden brown.

Stir potatoes at least once.

Furry Friends Pets, Just What the Doctor Ordered The Pet Doctor 359-6611

The human-animal bond really refers to “the mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals”. It is influenced by behaviors essential to the health and well being of both.

As a veterinarian my role is to help maximize the potential of this relationship. The discussion that follows will talk about studies that are showing ways that pets help us. We may not be to the point where pets are used as part of therapy just like medication or surgery, but I feel we are headed that way. Larger studies need to be done to test the benefits of pets much as you would for a new medication. It will have to be scientifically proven before it becomes mainstream therapy.

If you have a pet you know the joy of coming home to someone who is excited to see you. It turns out more than 60% of households have a pet. Pets are now traveling more with their owners. 56% of people with dogs let them sleep in the bed. 53% of dog owners consider their dog as family. Pet costumes are a big

business. How many of us have spent time watching you tube videos of pets dressed up at Halloween or chuckled at how entertaining cats can be when being cats. The word, Zooeyia, describes the positive benefits to human health from interacting with animals.

Pets can increase our exercise.

Pets can lessen the impact of chronic disease. Pets can promote community. Pets can facilitate smoking cessation as we stop because of our pet’s health. More than a third of all Americans and half of all singles say they rely more on their pets than on other people for companionship.

HABRI is the Human Animal Bond Research Initiative (www.habri.org). They are gathering information that demonstrates that relationships with pets help us. In the case of Autism one study has shown that when present, animals help children with autism interact better. They display more social behaviors such as talking, making physical contact, and looking at faces.

They laugh and smile more.

Dogs are being trained to work with children with autism as one example of a therapy dog.

In the case of heart disease, pet owners had hearts that adapted better to stressful situations than non-pet owners.

In a 2008 study the relative risk of death from heart attack was 40% higher for those who never owned a cat. In fact a lower risk of heart attacks was associated not only with own-

ing a cat, but with ever having owned one. These results held true even with adjustments for other risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and cigarette smoking. Dog owners are more likely to exercise and as a result have better cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure. It turns out being around pets could actually help lower cholesterol and triglycerides levels. It was found even if the person recovering from heart disease wasn’t that fond of the pet, they still had a better recovery than someone without a pet.

Dementia and Alzheimers also show benefits from pets.

Pets can help encourage social interaction which reduces the sense of loneliness and isolation experienced by dementia and Alzheimer patients. Pets provide social comfort and have a soothing affect especially with someone who talks very little.

It used to be thought that pets were bad if your infant or small child was felt to have allergies. Research now shows that having pets around very young children can prevent allergies later in life, strengthen a child’s immune system, and guard against conditions such as asthma and eczema.

Cancer is one area pets may prove especially useful. Studies are ongoing that show the dogs unique ability to sniff out cancers. They are trained in the same way bomb and drug dogs are trained, usually asso-

ciating the odor with a treat. A dog’s nose is much more sensitive than our nose. A good example is the cake fresh out of the oven. As humans we smell a cake. The dog however can smell the sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla extract, etc that are in the cake. The accuracy of dogs in lab testing is well over 90%. In young cancer patients dogs have the potential to help make the hospital experience easier for children.

Dogs can help by providing a distraction from pain or fear while helping to motivate the child to actively participate in the healing process.

In depression cases pets help decrease loneliness whether in a clinical or home setting.

A pet’s unconditional love provides comfort to those who are depressed. Pets, especially dogs, give people a reason to get out and about because they need regular exercise. Pets provide a sense of purpose as they need to be fed and watered. Pets can also help boost the self confidence

of someone who suffers from depression.

In post traumatic stress disease or PTSD the sufferer often may find it easier to be around animals instead of people. Pets are nonjudgmental and offer outward signs of love and affection. The simple act of bonding with a pet elevates levels of the hormone, oxytocin, also

crease heart rate and overcome anxiety. The simple act of petting can increase oxytocin levels in people and animals.

Pet ownership has become an important influence on human health research. It doesn’t mean everyone should run out and get a pet.

They do require commitment of time and money to properly care for them.

However, it seems the health benefits for you may be more than worth the cost.

After the implant is placed in the jaw and allowed to heal, we can use it to anchor a crown or bridge or denture, to give you the look and feel of natural teeth.

Many people have heard about a dental implant procedure called “All on Four”. All on Four refers to a dental restoration that is entirely supported by four implants to replace all of the teeth in either the upper or lower jaw or both.

The original procedure was pioneered by Dr. Melo in Portugaul. Designed to replace all of the teeth in a jaw, Dr. Melo started to place four implants scattered over the jaw, sometimes at angles or around sinuses or nerves, and making dentures that were stabilized or “screwed in” to the implants.

around the implants. Teeth have nerves and blood supply, which implants lack. The presence of these nerves can make chewing better for patients, something dentists called “proprioception”. Proprioception is the ability to “feel” where the jaw is while we chew.

All on Four depends on the implants to heal properly (fuse to the bone) to support the denture. This denture can be made with acrylic or porcelain like zirconium.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” (R) -- As an American reporter embedded in Afghanistan, Kim Baker (Tina Fey) is set on a journey of self-discovery alongside a separate crusade to cover a war that’s losing direction and public interest.

She must adapt to the culture of Kabul, and the culturewithin-a-culture of Western journalists trying to make it there. Kim befriends a fellow female (Margot Robbie) and kicks up some romance with a Scottish photojournalist (Martin Freeman) while trying to find her way without being kidnapped or blown up.

Fey again teams up with writer Robert Carlock, who worked with her on TV’s “30

Rock,” but the dynamic is altered here for a more dramatic and serious tone. The film is timely and has genuine charm, but something about the exit strategy leaves you feeling it won’t last long after the credits.

“Eye in the Sky” (R) -- A high-tech system of surveillance tracks a group of Kenyan terrorists outside of Nairobi. British military officers (Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman) makes the decision that the targets have to be neutralized from afar before they can carry out their suicide mission. It could all be neatly accomplished by a weaponized drone, controlled by a pilot (Aaron Paul) in Nevada, until a little girl is spotted selling bread, close enough that she also could be killed in the strike. While the military machine mulls over the ethics on separate continents, the situation continues to develop on the ground.

It’s a taut, thoughtful and powerfully acted take on the changing battlefield. It’s also

Assemble the arms! A series of Hall of Famers and power players, from Hank Aaron to Derek Jeter, weigh in on the topic.

Director John Hock has Kevin Costner narrate, giving it the proper gravitas. While the movie deals with the stats and numbers that analysts will dive into, it also includes the mental part of the game, and does so without losing that great-old-pastime feel.

Quarterly Review Two women were comparing notes on the difficulties of running a small business.

“I started a new practice last year,” the first one said. “I insist that each of my employees take at least a week off every three months.”

“Why in the world would you do that?” the other asked.

She responded, “It’s the best way I know of to learn which ones I can do without.”

Planning Ahead One rainy evening, my husband and I emerged from a restaurant, only to find that he had locked the keys in the car.

He insisted he could open the door with a wire coat hanger, so we went back to the restaurant to get one. There were none to be found.

He then ran to a department store a quarter-mile away and returned with a coat hanger. After a few attempts, he got the door open, and we climbed in.

As we sat there, soaked and cold, he stuck the hanger under his seat. With a smug grin, he said, “Now if this ever happens again, I’ll have one.”

By the mid-1870s, America’s coins had become, well, boring. The dime, quarter, half dollar and silver dollar all shared the exact same image of Lady Liberty sitting down. They’d shared them for 40 long years, too. (There was even a twenty-cent coin mint-

So the U. S. Mint decided it was time to shake things up. In 1876, the Mint Director wrote to his counterpart in Britain, asking if he could recommend a good engraver and coin designer. Yes, the Brit replied, we’ve got a talented young guy here named George Morgan. You want to hire him?

Indeed, the Americans did. Morgan was just the person to put a little spice in American coinage, and soon he was sailing to our side of the pond. Arriving in Philadelphia that fall, he quickly got down to work.

He enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts to help prepare him for creating a new Liberty head design.

Morgan’s timing was good. America had a silver glut in the post-Civil War years and had stopped minting silver dollars in 1873. By the time Morgan arrived on the scene, there were calls to start cranking them out again.

So he began sketching ideas for a brand new silver dollar. He was tired of images of Liberty based on traditional Greek goddesses.

Morgan wanted a Lady Liberty who looked like a real American woman.

A buddy recommended he use a friend’s daughter as his model. Anna Willess Williams was an 18 year-old art student, preparing for a career as a teacher. Morgan liked what he saw. She had fair complexion and, in his words, “blue eyes and a Grecian nose … her hair was almost her crowning glory … golden color and abundant.”

Anna wasn’t interest-

Anna first sat for Morgan in November 1876, and four more times in 1877. He was captivated by her profile, calling it the most perfect he ever saw in England or America.

Those sessions eventually led to the design for the Morgan silver dollar, one of the most beautiful and beloved coins ever made.

When Congress finally passed a bill resuming the production of silver dollars, Morgan was ready to go. The very first one was struck at the Philadelphia Mint at 3:17 P.M. on March 11, 1878.

Americans instantly embraced the new coin. When the series ended in 1921, more than 657 million had been minted.

But someone inside the Mint had loose lips, and

Anna was “outed” in an 1879 Philadelphia newspaper story headlined “The Silver Dollar Girl.” Other articles about her soon followed. People were eager to know more about the lovely young woman on the popular new coin.

Anna was not a happy camper, to put it mildly.

This was the very situation she had wanted to avoid. She was bombarded by letters from admirers, some proposing marriage and others offering her contracts to appear on stage. People showed up at her home, and even the school where she taught, to get a peek at her.

Anna kept a low profile and said almost nothing about posing for Lady Liberty. She progressed to school principal, and then gave up the job to teach kindergarten.

Some said all the unwanted attention had something to do with it. A suitor proposed and she accepted, but for some

Whenever a reporter tried to interview her about her modeling experience, she waved it off as merely “an incident of my youth,” and said little else.

She was injured in a serious fall in December 1925, then suffered a stroke and died the following April at age 68. Her obituary prominently mentioned her connection to the famous coin.

And there the story might have ended, except for one thing. Some people claim there was a good reason why Anna never talked about modeling for the Morgan dollar: the coin wasn’t based on her likeness.

A letter supposedly written years later by Morgan’s wife to her daughter said the designer “just made up the obverse (the coin’s front side) himself.”

Critics point out the face on the dollar appears much older than an 18 yearold. But supporters counter the Mint’s Chief Engraver, Charles Barber, was jealous of Morgan’s masterpiece and intentionally aged the image to look more mature.

Personally, I don’t think you need to call in the CSI team to solve this mystery. One look at the coin and a photograph settles it. The nose, lips and chin are exactly the same.
