How important are those pesky passwords in our lives?

We have passwords for almost everything.

Not only that. Some systems require you to change your password every few months for security’s sake.

Yes, it’s hard coming up with secure passwords you can remember.

My pet peeve are the passwords that give me a maximum number of characters to use.

I understand a minimum. Longer passwords are more secure so a minimum makes sense. But a maximum number of char-

acters doesn’t make sense.

What’s the best way to come up with a password?

The easiest is to use something close to you. But you don’t want to do anything too close that a hacker could guess.

So let’s create a secure password together.

First think of a word or name close to you.

I’m going to use my daughter’s middle name, Nicole.

Now, this isn’t a secure password. It would be hacked in minutes. So the trick is to make it more secure.

A hacker program designed to brute force a

password works through several thousand combinations a second. Brute force literally means the program is using each letter in each spot and guessing what your password would be.

Easy to crack passwords use only lower case letters so that is how the program starts. If my password (nicole) is only using lower case letters the hackers have 11,881,376 chances to go through to get my password. This is easily doable for a program that can sift through thousands of those chances each second.

Now let’s add a capital letter or two. This means

FISHING REPORT Lake Murray: Striped bass: Good. Lake World reports that striper are definitely in the area of the dam and starting to move into a typical summer pattern, but the results of the recent Lake World striper tournament attest that that is only part of the story. Fish were caught all over the lake, with good reports coming from Crystal Lake and someone even fishing up the river. While the primary pattern is probably starting to be down-lining (especially on the hottest days), Lake World advises not to give up on free-lines early in the morning.

Without making the password longer it becomes less hackable. So Nicole becomes Nic0le. By using a zero instead of the letter o this raises my chances of being hacked to 916,132,832. That is over nine hundred million options to go through to guess my password.

It continues to rise if you

add in symbols, we are now past 7 billion possibilities.

I hope you can see that by just changing nicole to

Nic0!e, I have kept a small password and for me it is easily remembered. It is also more secure.

Make it longer and it becomes even more secure.

Becoming a Teacher Once there was a man named Nathan. He wanted very much to be a teacher.

So he went to seek the advice of the wisest, most highly respected counselor in the land.

“Wise counselor,” Nathan began, “it has always been my dream to be a teacher. I want to stimulate the minds of the young people of our land. I want to lead them down the road of knowledge. Please tell me the secret of becoming a teacher.”

“Your goal is a commendable one, Nathan. However, it is also a very difficult one to achieve. First you must overcome three major obstacles.”

“I am ready to meet the challenge,” answered Nathan bravely.

“First you must swim the Sea of Children,” directed the knowing counselor.

mined lad,” said the advisor. “However, now you must climb the Mountain of Paperwork.”

Nathan set out at once.

He wrote objectives and drew up lesson plans.

He made out report cards and graded papers.

He filled out accident reports, attendance reports and withdrawal reports.

He completed inventories, evaluations, surveys, and request forms. Finally, he made dittos and more dittos. He ran them off until he was purple in the face.

But the courageous boy’s resolve never dwindled. He went to the wise counselor for his third task.

“You are indeed very strong, Nathan. But this third task will take all the courage you can muster.

You must now cross the country of Duties and Committees.”

At first Nathan was hesi-

tant. But his convictions remained steadfast. He began his long journey across the country of Duties and Committees.

Nathan took lunch duty, bus duty, and recess duty.

He was on the social committee, patrol committee, and the faculty advisory committee. He was the adult supervisor of the student government and ran the United Fund and Easter Seal drives. He went to PTA meetings, NRA meetings, SST meetings, School Site meetings, and in-service workshops. He organized bicentennial programs, talent shows, and book drives.

Finally, he was elected the building representative of the union. At last Nathan reached the outskirts of Duties and Committees.

Exhausted but happy, he returned to the knowledgeable counselor.

“I swam the Sea of Children. I climbed the Mountain of Paperwork. I crossed the country of Duties and Committees,” Nathan proclaimed. “Am I not worthy of the title of Teacher?”

“Why, Nathan,” began the counselor, “you have been a teacher all along.”

Nathan protested, “But I have not stimulated any minds. I have not guided anyone down the road to knowledge, I have not had any time to teach” “Oh, you say you want to TEACH! I thought you said you wanted to be a teacher.

In 1952, a Swedish orthopedic surgeon, Per Branemark, started the research that led to the modern dental implant. A typical implant consists of a titanium screw (resembling a tooth root) with a roughened or smooth surface.

The majority of dental implants are made out of commercially pure titanium, which is available in 4 grades depending upon the amount of carbon and iron

contained.[ This pure titanium is fused with a special liner, that when in contact with jaw bone, causes the implant to “osteointegrate” or fuse to the bone. Osteointegration does two things…it keeps the implant firmly in the bone (they just don’t move at all), and it helps the implant maintain the level of the jaw bone, so the bone won’t shrink away, like it normally would when the tooth was lost.

With dental implants, the dentist can miraculously replace a single tooth or multiples of teeth. Implants can be used to anchor dentures and partials, support fixed bridges, and can even be used to temporarily move teeth for braces.

Are you a candidate for dental implants? First, lets talk about who are not candidates for implants. There are few absolute contraindications to implant dentistry.

However, there are some systemic, behavioral and anatomic considerations that also should be considered..

Particularly for mandibular (lower jaw) implants, there must be sufficient alveolar bone available to place the implant, without damaging nerves or sinuses Such insult may cause irreparable damage to the nerve, often felt as a paresthesia (numbness) or dysesthesia (painful numbness) of the gum, lip and chin. This condition may persist for life and may be accompanied by unconscious drooling.

Often an ancillary procedure known as a block graft or sinus augmentation are needed to provide enough

bone for successful implant placement Uncontrolled type II diabetes is a significant relative contraindication as healing following any type of surgical procedure is delayed due to poor peripheral blood circulation. Patients who smoke, or use tobacco products (snuff, etc.) are also poor candidates, because of delayed or unpredictable healing.

There is new information about intravenous and oral bisphosphonates (taken for certain forms of breast cancer and osteoporosis, respectively) which may put patients at a higher risk of developing a delayed healing syndrome called osteonecrosis. Implants are contraindicated for some patients who take intravenous bisphosphonates.

Bruxism (tooth clenching or grinding, especially at night) is another consideration which may reduce the prognosis for treatment.

The forces generated during bruxism are particularly detrimental to implants while bone is healing; micromovements in the implant positioning are associated with increased rates of implant failure. Bruxism continues to pose a threat to implants throughout the life of the recipient. Natural teeth have nerves and fibers in the bone and socket that can cushion the tooth. The implant has no such cushion, so the extra heavy forces of tooth grinding can be detrimental to the bone and implant. Wearing a nightguard can usually prevent this damage.

Virtually all dental im-

plants placed today are root-form endosseous implants i.e., they appear similar to an actual tooth root (and thus possess a "rootform") and are placed within the bone (end- being the Greek prefix for "in" and osseous referring to "bone").

The bone of the jaw accepts and osseointegrates with the titanium post. The osseointegration is the component of this implant procedure that makes it resemble the look and feel of a natural tooth.

Prior to the advent of root-form endosseous implants, most implants were either blade endosseous implants, in that the shape of the metal piece placed within the bone resembled a flat blade, or subperiosteal implants, in which a framework was constructed to lie upon and was attached with screws to the exposed bone of the jaws.

With implants, the dentist has multiple ways to replace and restore teeth. He can use the implant to replace a single tooth with a crown, or several implants to support a fixed bridge.

He can use them to anchor removable partials, or even make a denture that “snaps in” and doesn’t touch the roof of the mouth. (Many patients suffer with loose dentures, or dentures that make them “gag” by touching the roof of the mouth.)

Overall, implants are 95% successful when placed in the jaw, and can last between fifteen years and a lifetime! They can provide the solution that a “dentally crippled” patient needs to get back to a healthy smile.
