PICKS OF THE WEEK T2 Trainspotting (R) — After 20 years, Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) has come home to Edinburgh. He reconnects with his old pals: Spud (Ewan Bremner) is still an addict, and Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller) is a petty dealer, hustler and part-time barman.

Begbie (Robert Carlyle) breaks loose from prison to take revenge on Renton for absconding with the drug money from the first film.

Their interactions are filled with self-destruction and attempted redemption; once again, the ride is wild and unforgettable.

Director Danny Boyle delves deep into a world of choices that is full of grit and color, bringing home a film just as fascinating and addicting as its predecessor.

Owain Yeoman, Tony Goldwyn, and John C. McGinley in The Belko Experiment.

Anything happen.

Use the powers for good, Earth is spared. If not, well, you get the idea.

This film is positively stuffed with talent: Robin Williams as Neil’s dog, newly graced with speaking powers; aliens voiced by the cast of “Monty Python”; Kate Beckinsale as Neil’s downstairs neighbor and love interest; and cameos from Rob Riggle, Eddie Izzard, Joanna Lumley and more.

Despite direction by Terry Jones, and the powerhouse cast, this movie is a dud that devolves into a series of silly skits and not enough cohesive story.

CHIPS (R) — “CHiPs” is short-

hand for “California Highway Patrol.” I have fond TV memories of the friendly, vanilla Jon Baker and the always obliging beefcake Frank “Ponch” Poncherella patrolling on their motorcycles, solving problems and cracking crimes.

Not so with the 2017 reboot, starring Michael Pena as Ponch, with Dax Shepard as Baker, as well as writer/director.

Ponch is a seasoned federal officer rooting out what might be an inside crime in the department; he’s teamed with Baker, a rookie ex-motocross daredevil.

The plot points never accelerate into anything more than a vehicle for toilet humor and puerile gags.

TV New Releases “Bunnicula Season 1, Part 1: Night of the Vegetable”

The Belko Experiment (R) —

The scene is an office building in Bogota. Eighty white-collar workers show up ready for a day of hardcore paper pushing, but before the coffee is even cooled, the building is sealed and a voice over the PA announces the day’s real objective: kill or be killed.

tracking device, but turns out to be a bomb. If they do not do as they are told, they will be fired, literally.

Silver and gold bottle was made to serve golden liqueur of Italy This lovely bottle was made in Italy of silver and gold and hallmarked from the year 1903. Pieces such as this were made for special drinks and liqueurs but are not usually the high quality of this example.

There is a the lemon motif applied in the center of the bottle. This lemon motif is made of solid gold and was cast and applied to the body of the bottle. You are able to define the distinctive citrus skin as the silver artist was very skilled.

The bottle was made by hand hammering and retains a pleasing light texture when touched. This texture also makes the bottle easy to use. A cork would have been used to keep the precious limoncello safely inside the bottle.

Limoncello was made popular in Southern Italy and has been produced there for generations. Made from native lemons, sugar and spirits, a taste of this liquor is truly a taste of Southern Italy.

Small crystal glasses are included in this set and would have been used to serve this potent drink to family and friends.

Like so many American and European specialties, Limoncello no doubt grew out of the abundance of lemons in the south of Italy and

How to wash those clothes the old-fashioned way

his is the first in a series of articles about how our parents and grandparents had to do everything in the "Good Ol' Days." They start great conversations with the younger generations in your family. We welcome suggestions and memories from readers of the Lexington County Chronicle and Lake Murray Fish Wrapper.

A lady in Little Mountain reportedly refused running water and electricity until the 1980s.

She washed her laundry in hot water tubs, beat the clothes against a granite rock and ran them through a ringer.

She had a lot of American Indian in her.

Even with electricity, she used her wood stove to cook.

A large family can produce a large pile of dirty clothes every day.

Even today's smaller families tend to dirty a lot of clothing.

If you get behind on washing, the mountain of laundry can look overwhelming.

When I think about how my ancestors washed clothes, I appreciate my washing machine, electricity and hot water.

Many early farm wives and others washed whatever clothing they had in a river and beat the wet clothes against rocks.

Some American Indians used a frame of sticks and water to rub the clothes together.

In Europe, women would kneel beside a river or stream and use a wooden beater, also called a paddle or a washing-beetle, to loosen the dirt from the clothing.

It was not smart to get Mom or the Mrs. mad with you.

Lye from wood ashes was mixed with water and used as a pre-wash. Soaking dirty clothes helped loosen soil and stains. Bleach was used on yellowing or greying linen.

Later on, washing clothes became easier with water heated on a wood stove, placed in a barrel and hand

My great-great grandmother kept her “washing pots” down near the lake, to make laundry day easier. With 12 children, she did a lot of laundry.

I wish I had Grandma' Essie Belle's wash pots.

I may get several metal tubs and let our children wash their clothes the “old way.”

Perhaps I'll hear less complaining about chores.

Hurray to the inventors of the washing machine. We should all be thankful.

“It might look like a lot, but I was reconciling your bank account and I think we can afford it. I drove by the house we had looked at last year and it’s on sale! Remember? The one with the indoor pool, rose garden, tennis court, and beachfront property. I stopped by the real estate agent this morning to find out... “

PLAYER OF THE YEAR Megan Classer Lexington High School Girls Soccer The 3-time All-State Lexington High School junior led the Lady Wildcats to a third consecutive region title and Lower State final appearance.

She had 28 goals and nine assists on the season and was named the Coaches Association of Women’s Sports Class 5A Player of the Year.

On April 18, Classer broke the 15-year school record for career goals of 92.

In her second season as Brookland-Cayce girls’ soccer coach, Heise led the Lady Bearcats to a 19-7-2 overall record and its first Lower State championship since 2006.

After winning a state title in 2005 as a player for Brookland-Cayce, she led the program to a state-runner finish.

Heise is now the new girls’ soccer coach at Gray Collegiate Academy.

Small businesses oppose coastal seismic testing

Small business leaders say seismic tests and offshore oil drilling could damage the tourism industry.

S.C. Small Business Chamber of Commerce President Frank Knapp said if seismic airgun blasting is allowed in the Atlantic: • Commercial fishermen will see reduced catches of up to 70% because fish will be killed Knapp or displaced and often do not return.

• Reduced catches affect processors, markets and restaurants which will have less fresh seafood.

• Restaurants will need to raise prices and suffer reduced sales.

• Marine mammals will be harmed, displaced or killed.

Stranded mammals may be beached with negative publicity for hotels.

• Offshore sport fishing will lose big-game fish.

• Scallops and other invertebrates will be harmed.

Knapp asked business people and others to write opposing seismic testing.

“Please send BAPAC (Business Alliance for Protecting the Atlantic Coast) your letters and we’ll bundle and deliver them for maximum impact,” he said.

Letters need to include: • Your name, business name, address and a description of your business.

• How much of your revenue depends on healthy ocean and marine life.

• How much revenue you could you lose if commercial fishing is reduced or other concerns occur.

• Clearly state that you oppose both seismic testing and offshore drilling.

Guard promotes S.C. Attorney General

State Attorney General Alan Wilson of Lexington has a new rank.

The Guard promoted U.S. Army Lt. Col. Alan Wilson to the rank of colonel at a ceremony in the Adjutant General’s building Saturday.

State leaders who attended included Gov. Henry McMaster, U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson, the new colonel’s father, and Army Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston, Jr., the adjutant general.

Col. Wilson will serve as the Staff Judge Advocate for the National Guard.

Wilson began his military career in 1997 after graduating from the Army Reserve Officer’s Training Corps program at Francis Marion University in Florence.

He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. Field Artillery officer and attended training at Fort Sill, Okla.

In 2006, Wilson completed the Staff Judge Advocate Course at the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, Va. Wilson’s distinguished

Unless you live in flood prone areas or have a home on the coast, hurricane forecasts may not concern you.

The 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Forecast calls for two major hurricanes, six others and a dozen storms, according to Weather.com.

A major hurricane is a Category 3 or higher with winds starting at 129 miles an hour.

The official Atlantic hurricane season ends Nov. 30.

Occasional storms form outside the season such as last year with January’s Hurricane Alex and May’s Tropical Storm 2017 Atlantic storm names Bonnie.

Then he realized there’d been a terrible mistake. The colonel had

requested .54-caliber ammunition.

Orion knew the regiment’s guns were .58 caliber. Fresh .54 cartridges would be useless.

Just then, a Confederate bullet ripped open his thigh. Orion fell

bleeding under the pitiless Mississippi sun.

He had seen the other messengers go down (all were killed); as the only one left, he knew his comrades’ lives depended on him.

When stretcher bearers eventually reached him, he refused to be taken to a hospital until he delivered his vital message to General William Sherman, who was so impressed with Orion’s heroism he mentioned it in his official report to Washington.

Orion rejoined the 55th that December. He fought in 14 more battles before mustering out in December 1864 — a combat veteran at age 15!

By then word of his valor had reached President Lincoln, who appointed him to the U. S. Naval Academy (he was too young to attend West Point). Something happened during his time at Annapolis and, although the exact reason is murky, he didn’t graduate.

He attended dental school instead, going into practice first in Nebraska and then in Springfield, Missouri. On April 23, 1896, the good doctor was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Orion died in 1930 at age 81.

He rests today just as he did 150 years earlier, among his fellow Union veterans in a sleepy corner of the cemetery. His tombstone is like theirs, except for three simple words: Medal of Honor.

Although it’s our nation’s highest distinction, those words don’t do justice to the extraordinary bravery displayed by someone who was still too young to shave.

A pastor finds his new ministry: Caring for our elderly

raig Wagoner has created and operated multiple businesses, pastored multiple churches and now has a new ministry, caring for those in the last years of their lives. As the director of Wellmore, Lexington’s newest retirement community, he talks here about his life with Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bellune.

Q. Tell us about your roots.

Where where you born and who influenced you the most growing up?

A. I grew up in Fort Ashby, W. Va., the last remaining fort George Washington commissioned. The town had 1,500 people. Mom and Dad were active in the community. They had a farm,

and Mom was a nurse who trained nurses. Dad was a master carpenter, who built custom homes.

He was active in the local Lions Club. The Lions did everything. They raised the money to build the library, recruited doctors and installed the town water and sewer system.

I left Fort Ashby in my early 20s and saw that other communities lacked the things that we had.

Q. Where has your faith and businesses taken you?

A. At age 22, I was running three businesses. I started an in-ground pool business while I was study-

ing at Potomac State College. Dad had taught me how to run a construction business and I used his model. A sign with my phone number brought about nine pool orders the first summer.

My customers needed fences around their pools so I contacted a man who built them. He offered to show me how as there was enough fencing business for the two of us.

My crew needed work in the winter and a friend taught me the electrical business to keep them busy.

We had electrical contracts as far away as Kentucky.

At the same time, Trinity

United Methodist Church in Fort Ashby invited me to serve as their youth minister, We went from 12 kids to 50 in one month.

These were not typical kids. Most were from single parent homes. Some walked three miles to attend our programs on music, drama, clowning and variety shows with 12 adult volunteers helping.

My pastor’s wife pushed me toward the ministry. The district superintendent gave me four churches while I was earning my masters degree in divinity.

One of the most important lessons I learned was during my first appointment

to four churches. We developed social programs and youth programs needed by the four communities.

Because I did not empower the people in the churches to use their gifts when I was appointed to four other churches the programs ended. No one took it up. I learned from that the importance of building a line of succession. God told me to use my gifts and he would multiply them through others. And this continues to this day.

many older people were not getting enough to eat, no social interaction and health needs were not being met. We at the church started providing them with one covered dish meal a week.

I saw a need to help people in their declining years.
