FISHING REPORT

LAKE MURRAY:

Bass: Fair. Captain Doug Lown reports that first thing in the morning some fish can be found shallow feeding on bait, and later in the day fish can be found around rocky points where they will take Carolina rigs. Throwing topwaters early in the creeks can also catch fish.

Crappie: Excellent. Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that crappie fishing has been very strong with minnows fished over brush in about 15-20 feet of water.

Striped bass: Good. Captain Brad Taylor reports that first thing free lines and planer boards will catch fish, and after that down lines in the 40-foot range have been productive.

Catfish: Good. Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reports that fancasting cut herring and dip baits around humps has been productive for channel catfish.

Factories destroyed in wars made Paris Porcelain collectible

T

his beautiful porcelain egg plate was painted near 1800 in France. It features the saturated colors achieved by the use of natural dyes and pigments used in the period. The center is red with every other egg holder painted blue. The remaining egg holders have a gold design painted on the white porcelain.

This smallish circular serving plate was used to offer up a commonly available food. During this time period you ate what you grew or raised so the egg was an essential part of many meals. Eggs of all sorts were consumed as chickens were amongst many other birds found along the French countryside.

Antique recipe books feature exotic bird eggs as well as the iconic ones we as Americans make most often.

This sort of plate was part of a larger porcelain service. There would have been egg cups, bone dishes, salt cellars, nut dishes and smallish plates used to decorate a table while serving up nature’s bounty.

Porcelain such as this is known as Paris porcelain as it was crafted from a unique white, glazed and painted material made popular

by French porcelain factories. These factories were all destroyed in wars, instantly making this porcelain a sought after collectible.

The Shepherd’s Center is a faith-based organization that holds classes 3 or 4 times a year to help seniors learn about what interests them. Generally, they have one or two computer courses each semester. For one fee you can take up to 3 classes a week. There are Shepherd’s Centers in Lexington and St. Andrews. What every town in America needs MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

Albuquerque, N.M.

It doesn’t really matter where you live.

It could be tiny Pelion or robust, growing Lexington.

Every town has a history and should have the vision to showcase itself to: • Instill residents’ pride and a sense of belonging.

• Capture the imaginations and interest of visitors.

Some of that is underway in many Lexington county communities with new, updated or expanded places to go, to eat and to enjoy life.

A tourist mecca

Albuquerque has one such feature that distinguishes it and other New Mexico cities such as Santa Fe and Taos.

It has an Old Town, the center of where the community began. It’s merchants association works hard to plan events and attract restaurants, gift shops and retailers.

Old Town has been the center of Albuquerque since the city was founded in 1706 Old Town encompasses about 10 blocks of historic

adobe buildings grouped around a central plaza.

On the plaza’s north side sits the San Felipe de Neri Church, the oldest building in the city dating from 1793.

Surrounding the church, the city’s settlers had built their homes, shops and government offices, many of which have since been converted into the restaurants, art galleries and gift shops.

Old Town today looks much like it did centuries ago.

Its Pueblo-Spanish style architecture of flat-roofed buildings mirrors the Southwestern desert. Long porches line the fronts of most buildings offering shade from the relentless New Mexican sun.

Bancos (benches) are built into the walls to give weary husbands places to sit while their wives shop and max out their credit cards.

Shop till you drop

We arrived the evening before and called our friends Brian and Jeanette Fantl.

We’ve known Brian since he was a teenager. His father worked with us on a screenplay and other projects.

Brian is now the publisher of the Albuquerque Journal. the state’s largest newspaper.

Both of them had to work which gave us a full day to explore Albuquerque on our own before meeting them for dinner that evening.

We drove south into the city and found a parking lot in Old Town. We figured the

parking fee was worth it.

We wouldn’t have to spend time looking for a parking place on the street. The open lot would discourage anyone looking to break into cars.

Walking the plaza is like stepping back into the past.

Giant bunches of glistening dark red peppers hang beside art and gift shop doors.

Inside is almost every kind of tourist junk imaginable from caps and clothing to housewares, beer mugs and wine and shot glasses.

The shop owners must bet tourists are heavy drinkers and have similar friends with big thirsts back home.

Much of it is emblazoned with logos of the TV crime series “Better Call Saul” and “Breaking Bad” which were filmed on location here.

Our friend Brian Fantl served as an adviser to the producers of the TV series.

MacLeod enjoys browsing through these shops in hopes of finding birthday or Christmas gifts for someone she cares about. I always hope it isn’t me. I have enough accumulated junk back home to last the rest of my life.

Being a dutiful husband, I go with her only because I enjoy being with her and to be available if she wants my opinion on something.

That, of course, is rare.

Husbands don’t know much about life’s finer things.

Jerry and MacLeod split an order of chili rellenos at the Hacienda del Rio on the square in Albuquerque’s Old Town. Even at that, they couldn’t eat everything on only one plate.

We strolled inside to the music of a Spanish guitar.

The host, a dark-haired, dark-skinned man with a mustache he had to be proud of and dressed in Mexican gaucho garb found us a table.

Our waitress brought water glasses, a huge basket of corn chips and large bowl of spicy

home made salsa.

We asked to split an order of chili rellenos and our waitress smiled and said, “That’s smart. It’s lots of food.”

She was right. She brought a heaping plate to MacLeod and an empty one for me.

MacLeod began to unload her plate onto mine.

I suggested we should go outside and drag in a few local urchins to help us eat it.

We couldn’t finish it.

Travel Tip

Never buy anything in a tourist trap unless it is for your worst enemy or the lazy brother-in-law you despise.

It is always overpriced, poorly made and brands you as a complete idiot.

Protein Pancakes

1 1/2 cups quick oats

1 scoop vanilla protein powder

2 egg whites 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda dash of cinnamon berries (optional) walnuts (optional) In blender, combine oats, protein powder, banana, Greek yogurt, milk, eggs, vanilla, baking powder, baking soda and cinnamon.

Blend until smooth batter forms.

Cook on griddle until golden brown.

Oat Bran Blueberry Muffins

2 cups oat bran hot cereal, uncooked

2 tablespoons brown

sugar substitute

1 cup skim milk

2 egg whites, slightly beaten 1/4 cup honey or molasses

2 tablespoons canola oil 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries Heat oven to 425 F. Line 12 muffin cups with paper baking cups or spray bottoms only with non-stick cooking spray.

In bowl, combine oat bran cereal, brown sugar substitute, baking pow­der and salt, if desired; mix well.

Add milk, egg whites, honey, oil and blueberries; mix just until dry ingredients are moistened.

Do not over-mix.

Fill prepared muffin cups about three-quarters full.

Bake 15-17 minutes, or until golden brown.

Variation: In place of blueberries, stir 1 medium mashed, ripe banana or any other fruit of choice into batter before baking.

ugars are one of the most important health conversations today. A diet filled with too many added sugars is associated with weight gain, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. According to the 2005-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the average American consumes an average of 20 tea­spoons a day, significantly more than the 6-9 teaspoons recommended daily by the American Heart Association.

Sugar can mean different things to different people, which not only adds to the confusion, but can quickly derail even your best intentions as you try to make the right choices for your family.

The difference between added and naturally occurring sugars

Many nourishing foods such as fruits, vegetables, certain whole grains and dairy products contain what are known as naturally occurring sugars; these are simple carbohydrates that are naturally present in a food’s biological structure. For example, the lactose found in milk is a sugar, as is the fructose in fruit.

In contrast, added sugars are those sugars or sweeteners you add in your kitchen – adding sugar or honey to a recipe or onto your breakfast cereal, for example – as well as sugars and sweeteners that are added to a variety of products by food manufacturers.

Added sugars are often used to enhance taste and flavor, of course, but can also be included for other reasons, such as to prevent spoiling – think summer jams – or assist in fermentation, such as in baking.

“Working with the Florida Department of Citrus, I’ve seen firsthand how much confusion there is around this topic for many families,” said registered dietitian Kate Geagan, author of “Go Green Get Lean.” “Yet while too many added sugars can fill your diet with ‘empty calories,’ naturally occurring sugars are found in some of nature’s most nutrient-rich packages, delivering

a bevy of benefits such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and more.”

An 8-ounce glass of 100 percent orange juice, for instance, has no added sugar. Beyond being an excellent source of vitamin C, it’s a good source of folate, especially important for women of childbearing age, as well as potassium, a vital mineral which helps nerves and muscles communicate and can help offset the effects of too much sodium in the diet. In fact, the FDA recently announced it will add potassium to the Nutrition Facts Panel because many Americans are falling short.

The benefits don’t stop there, though. A glass of 100 percent orange juice also delivers magnesium, vitamin A and niacin. Plus, it’s a significant source of hesperidin, an antioxidant that research suggests may have heart, blood pressure and cognition benefits, as well as reduce inflammation and oxidation. Furthermore, one glass counts as one serving (1 cup) of fruit to help you meet the 1.5-2 cups per day recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

How much added sugar is too much?

A delicious, vibrant eating plan that you can stick with for the long haul doesn’t mean you can’t ever consume added sugar, but it is about cutting back for most Americans – especially for groups with the highest intakes, such as adolescents and men – and replacing those calories with nutrient-rich foods.

The most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting added sugar intake to a maximum of 10 percent of total calories each day, or 200 calories of a 2,000 calorie diet, which matches guidelines from the World Health Organization and the American Heart Association.

Sloppy O Joes

Servings: 4

9 ounces lean ground turkey 1/2 large minced onion

1 small red bell pepper, minced

1 teaspoon cumin seed, ground

1 teaspoon coriander seed, ground

1 cup Florida orange juice

1 cup organic tomato juice

1 large sweet potato, baked and diced

4 whole wheat dinner rolls

In medium saute pan, saute ground turkey over medium heat until cooked thoroughly.

Remove turkey; reserve.

Saute onion until translucent. Add red pepper, cumin and coriander; saute for 1 minute then add orange juice. Cook until orange juice is reduced by two-thirds; add tomato juice and cooked turkey.

Cook until tomato juice has reduced by two-thirds then add diced baked sweet potato and stir until combined.

Split dinner rolls in half; spoon turkey mixture in center. Serve immediately.

Clearing up food label confusion

In May 2016, the FDA announced a revamped Nutrition Facts Panel that includes, among other improvements, clearly listing added sugars on their own line for the first time.

Up until now, both added and naturally occurring sugars have been lumped together under one “sugars” line, making it vexing for the average eater to determine how much sugar is naturally occurring versus added, especially given the dozens of different names for sweeteners that manufacturers often use. When this change hits supermarket shelves, families will be able to more easily spot foods and beverages that contain little to no added sugar.

In addition to highlighting added sugars and potassium, the Nutrition Facts Panel will now more accurately reflect serving sizes that Americans actually eat and drink. Also, packages that are reasonably consumed in a single sitting will no longer get a free ride using smaller serving sizes and listing multiple “servings” per bag, container or can.

songs about heartbreak, but those notes get lost in this low-fidelity biopic about the musician and his infidelities. Brit actor Tom Hiddleston (“The Avengers,” “Crimson Peak”) plays the Alabaman songsmith, with Elizabeth Olsen as his first wife, Audrey May. Before his death at the age of 29, Williams lit up the radio waves and established himself as a singular stage presence.

Hiddleston’s performance is blameless, but the movie never seems to find its rhythm.

There’s not much insight into the creative process of the man. There’s plenty about his troubled love life, but the connection to his music is never successfully made real.

“The Family Fang” (R) -- Chamille and Caleb Fang (Maryann Plunkett and Christopher Walken) produce artistic “pieces,” little deceptions and pranks that shock, surprise and, allegedly, provoke discussion. Their children, Annie and Baxter (played as adults by Nicole Kidman and Jason Bateman), were either understudies or unwitting props in these performances for most of their childhood.

When their parents vanish,

leaving behind a gruesome crime scene, the siblings go on a search, never certain if it’s sincere or another stunt.

It’s a dark sort of humor used to explore the ways that nobody gets a normal childhood, and what that means for us as grownups aware of our shortcomings. As director, Bateman pulls off some serious storytelling, avoiding the usual stumbles of a novel-tofilm adaptation.

“Boy and the World” (PG) -- Beginning in a simplistic, childlike and colorful place, this unique animated film follows a boy’s strange and perilous journey after his father leaves for the city and a war breaks out. There isn’t much discernable dialog, but the story comes across in vivid movement, music and colors.

The boy’s adventure takes him from country to city, through a carnival and a warzone.

With a main character who’s just above a stick figure and almost no real words spoken, it really is a work of amazing scope and emotion. The film has brought in dozens of awards from festivals around the world.

“Term Life” (R) -- After a severely botched job, professional lowlife Nick (Vince Vaughn) is the target of dirty cops, killer crooks and aggrieved relatives (who happen to be killer crooks.) He can get a bit of redemption from his inevitable demise in the form of a life-insurance policy that names his estranged daughter (Hailee Steinfeld) as sole beneficiary, but he has to survive the next three weeks before it kicks in.

So we get some father-daughter bonding with a few dangerous interludes, but nothing that really comes together for a satisfying experience. The plot is too spread out for its own good, and attempts by the cast to liven things up are ultimately smothered by poor pacing and underwhelming lines.

Old Rivalry After 20 years two college rivals bumped into each other.

“Oh, and how about you?” the first man asked. “Have you changed at all?”

“Well, yes I have”, replied the second man. “Remember how brutally honest I used to be, and how when someone said something uninteresting, I would reply, ’I couldn’t care less?’”

“Well now I just say, ’That’s great!’”

Selling Pretzels A little old lady sold pretzels on a street corner for 25 cents each. Every day a young man would leave his office

people cling to the white wedding gown.

But did you know a frumpy British queen remembered for dressing in deepest black started it? And that a very practical, secret reason was behind her color selection? It’s true. So get ready to learn the real reason why white became the exclusive bridal gown color.

England was gripped with excitement in early 1840.

Her Majesty Victoria, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Queen, Defender of the Faith (her official title) was getting married. Think our cousins across the pond were thrilled when William and Kate or Charles and Diana tied the knot? That was nothing; William and Charles were just princes, after all.

This was the first time a sitting English queen had wed in nearly 300 years.

The 20 year-old Victoria was deliriously happy.

She was passionately in love with her fiancé (and cousin), Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. When she proposed to him (as royal protocol dictated, and in German, because Albert spoke very little English), royal wedding planners rolled into action.

Then as now, one question dominated conversations: what would she wear?

Up till then, brides wore a rainbow of colors on their wedding day. Their gowns were elaborate, sometimes even stitched with threads of silver and gold.

Royal brides sometimes walked down the aisle in thick, bright red dresses accompanied by rich furs,

building at lunch time and, as he passed her pretzel stand, he would leave her a quarter, but would never take a pretzel.

This went on for more than five years. The two of them never spoke.

One day as the man passed the old lady’s pretzel stand and left his quarter as usual, the pretzel woman spoke to him, “Sir, I appreciate your business. You are a good customer, but I have to tell you that the pretzel price has increased to 35 cents.”

Great Service A woman rushed into the supermarket to pick up a few items. She headed for the express line where the clerk was talking on the phone with his back turned to her.

“Excuse me,” she said, “I’m in a hurry. Could you check me out, please?”

The clerk turned, looked her up and down, and smiled, “Not bad.”

Marriage Views Men and women have two distinct views about a wedding.

The husband to be wakes up in the morning, plays a round of golf and counts the minutes until he has to be at the altar.

The wife to be, on the other

But Victoria wasn’t buying it. A willful and headstrong child, she became a willful and headstrong monarch as well. This was, after all, the queen who popularized the Christmas tree, established the custom of afternoon tea time and launched Royal Jubilees to celebrate her years on the throne. If Victoria wanted to do something, she did it. And in 1840, she wanted a different type of wedding dress.

Forget the royal robes, she said. I’m making my wedding vows as a woman, not a queen. There would be none of the traditional gaudiness, not even a crown or tiara. She would appear, she said simply as a woman pledging herself to the man she loved.

Bride or not, the Queen of England was still the head of state. And her royal advisers realized the wedding presented a PR bonanza.

She repeats this over and over again, until she begins to shorten it to three words which she continues to repeat...

“Aisle, altar, him.” “Aisle, altar, him.” “Aisle, altar, him.”

Patient Information A woman called Mount Sinai Hospital. She said, “Mount Sinai Hospital? Hello. Darling, I’d like to talk with the person who gives the information about the patients. But I don’t want to know if the patient is better or doing like expected, or worse, I want all the information from top to bottom on

Mrs. Finkel.”

The voice on the other end of the line said, “Finkel... Finkel, Let me see... Feinberg, Farber -- Finkel. Oh yes, Mrs. Finkel is doing very well. In fact, she’s had two full meals, her doctor says if she continues improving he is going to send her home Tuesday.”

The woman said, “Thank God! That’s wonderful! She’s

going home on Tuesday. I’m so happy to hear that. That’s wonderful news.”

The guy on the other end said, “From your enthusiasm, I take it you must be one of the close family.”

She said, “What close family? I’m Sarah Finkel! My doctor tells me nothing!”

Britain was in the midst of the Industrial Revolution just then, and the introduction of machines was sending its textiles sector topsy-turvy. Machine laces were crippling sales of traditional hand-made laces, putting thousands of skilled artisans out of work. Her Majesty’s wedding gown was an ideal way to showcase this traditional British craft. Victoria agreed, and a large hunk of handmade Honiton lace was purchased.

And what better way to show off the lace, her dress designer said, than on white satin. Again, Victoria loved it.

But there was another practical (and secret) consideration here as well: white was cost-effective. Prince Albert came from a cash-strapped royal family and didn’t bring much financially to the union.

The royal court was unsure how thrilled taxpaying Britons would be about footing the bill to support a broke

royal consort who didn’t even speak their language. So they were cautious. The wedding wasn’t done on the cheap … but money wasn’t splashed around like it was going out of style, either. White satin was a safe bet.

And so when Victoria stood at the altar in London’s St. James Palace on February 10, 1840, her guests couldn’t believe their eyes. Victoria described it this way in her diary: “I wore a satin dress, with deep flounce of Honiton lace.

My jewels were my Turkish diamond necklace & earrings & my dear Albert’s beautiful sapphire brooch.” She wore an elaborate veil, also made of the same lace, and orange blossoms (a traditional symbol of fertility) as trim and on top of the veil.

The reaction? There were two sets. Aristocrats (people we would today call the 1 Percent) yawned. They thought the gown utterly lacked style.

But commoners, (everyday folks like you and me) loved it. They saw understated elegance. The fact that their queen wore simple white, an inexpensive color they could afford, signaled it was good enough for them, too. Queen Victoria had, unintentionally and unknowingly, given white her seal of approval. And people instantly embraced it for their own weddings.

So much so that by the 1850s Godey’s Lady’s Book (the era’s final word on women’s fashion in both the U.K. and U.S.) wrote about wedding dresses, “Custom has decided … that white is the most fitting hue, whatever

may be the material. It is an emblem of purity and innocence of girlhood, and the unsullied heart she yields to the chosen one.”

As for Victoria and Albert, theirs was a fabled marriage. They fought like tigers (like many couples, they struggled to devise a power sharing system that worked for them), then passionately made up … with “passionately” being the key word; they wound up having nine-count ’em - nine children. (Apparently, there was a whole lot of making up.)

When Albert died of illness at age 42 in December 1861, Victoria was devastated.

She never stopped mourning him, and wore nothing but deepest black for the remaining 40 years of her life.

One of her prized possessions was the Honiton lace from her wedding. She wore it in the official portrait taken for her 1897 Diamond Jubilee. When she died in 1901, she was buried with her lace wedding veil from six decades earlier.

And so the tradition of brides in white continues to this day. Forget the myth about “purity and innocence of girlhood” we’ve all heard for years. Wearing white was actually all about propping up a sagging British industry, and saving a few bucks in the royal wedding budget to boot.

But as they say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” White wedding gowns aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
