Last week we talked about how to secure your password.

This week, let’s focus on why.

Every few months we hear about another institution being hacked. When that happens, a partial list of the passwords that account holders used can be found.

The most disheartening thing that I see each time is the number one password used: 23456 That’s it. There are no letters, there are no special characters. Just 8 little numbers.

This password is so com-

mon that it is actually used as a decryption method for other passwords. Hackers know that this is the most common password, so they can use an algorithm to sort through all the encrypted passwords and then use this knowledge to crack the encryption.

Forget the hackers for a minute.

Imagine John Doe, sat down to log into his bank account. His username is only one character off from yours and you both have chosen to use ‘123456’ as your password. So he types in his username, except he misses that one letter, and he proceeds to type

in the password.

Instead of his bank account, he sees your bank account. A normal person would freak out and call the bank. What if John Doe isn’t normal and instead uses your account.

He might make a deposit in your account. But what’s worse, he could withdraw your money -- all because you both were one of thousands, if not millions, of people using one of the below passwords.

Here are some of the other more commonly seen passwords. And remember, I’m not talking about 10 people out of a million.

FISHING REPORT Lake Murray: Striped bass: Good. Lake World reports that striper are definitely in the area of the dam and starting to move into a typical summer pattern, but the results of the recent Lake World striper tournament attest that that is only part of the story. Fish were caught all over the lake, with good reports coming from Crystal Lake and someone even fishing up the river. While the primary pattern is probably starting to be down-lining (especially on the hottest days), Lake World advises not to give up on free-lines early in the morning.

Catfish: Good. Captain Chris Simpson reports that the channel catfish bite has picked up. Anchoring on humps and points and fan-casting dip bait, herring and shrimp from 5-25 feet of water is catching good numbers.

Wrong Answer Once, I worked as an operator on an old IBM 370/ Model 138 mainframe at a local college. My position had been reclassified so that it fell into a new area outside of the Information Technology staff.

He studied the two flashing lights for a few moments and asked what job it was currently processing.

I killed my career by replying, “Actually, sir, it’s cooling the room. The computer is over there.”

Stamp Error It took millions of years for nature to carve out the Grand Canyon and no time at all for the U.S. Postal Service to misplace it.

One of the most spectacular examples of erosion anywhere in the world, the Grand Canyon was carved by the Colorado River but is actually in Arizona.

In early 2000, the Postal Service was in the process of printing an order for nearly 101 million stamps of the natural wonder engraved with “Grand Canyon, Colorado” when it had to halt production.

Fortunately, the error was caught before all of several processes involved in producing the self-adhesive backed stamps were finished, Don Smeraldi, spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service, told Reuters.

“In our view it’s not really an error,” Smeraldi said.

“No customer has received any of these. None were issued.” He said the stamps “never left the printer.”

Smeraldi said it was unknown just how much of the total order had been under production when the error was found, but he said all of the misprinted stamps would be destroyed and the order reprinted.

Smeraldi said the Postal Service does not know the cost of the error. Neither does the agency know at this time what the reprinting costs will be, he said.

“We’re discussing with the printer just now the cost,” he said. “We don’t have any idea at this time.

This is a printer we work with all the time so we don’t really know how much it will be.”

As a family, we don’t keep “junk food” in the house.

Once when my son was eating a snack at his grandparents’ house, he asked his grandmother what vitamins they had in them.

She responded that she doubted there were any at all.

He replied wide-eyed, “You mean these are just for fun?”

Carjacking An elderly lady did her shopping and, upon returning to her car, found four males in the act of leaving with her vehicle.

She dropped her shopping bags, drew her handgun, and proceeded to scream at them at the top of her voice, “I have a gun and I know how to use it! Get out of the car, you scumbags!”

The four men didn’t wait for a second invitation, but got out and ran like mad.

The lady, somewhat shaken, proceeded to load her shopping bags in the back of the car and get into the driver’s seat. She was so shaken that she could not get her key into the ignition. She tried and tried, to no avail.

And then it dawned on her why.

A few minutes later, she found her own car parked four or five spaces farther down. She loaded her bags into her car and drove to the police station.

The sergeant to whom she told the story nearly tore himself in two with laughter and pointed to the other end of the counter, where four pale males were reporting a carjacking by a mad elderly woman described as white, less than five feet tall, glasses, curly

Anniversary Card In a stationery store, I quickly picked out a card for my wife for our anniversary.
