PICKS OF THE WEEK Power Rangers (PG-13) — Five

outcast teens — played by Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin and the singer Becky G — find each other in a small-town high school.

They stumble upon some magical coins and develop extraordinary powers. Afterward, their destiny is revealed, and the kids, now sort of superheros, train under the direction of the disembodied Zordon (voiced by Bryan Cranston), where they unite to defend against the extreme evil of Rita Repulsa (played delightfully by Elizabeth Banks).

All the while, they are cracking one-liners in all directions. If you’re a Mighty Morphin Power Ranger fan, you’re familiar with the concept.

The 2017 reboot doesn’t take itself or the series nostalgia too seriously, and the end result is purely freshened-up fun. Go, go Power Rangers!

Autopsy of Jane Doe (R) — In a small town, an investigation into a brutal and perplexing murder uncovers a corpse half-buried in a basement — dead but apparently untouched by the carnage suffered by the other victims.

“Jane Doe,” as she is called, is brought to a father and son team of coroners, played by Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch. They begin to piece together the peculiar particulars of the hair-raising mystery — wounds, broken bones, damage inside that defies explanation.

Each cut of the scalpel reveals paranormal evidence that becomes increasingly hard to ignore until they are trapped in a situation in which logic and perception are masterfully skewed.

The film is smartly done, keeping you on the edge of your chair until the very, very end.

Money (R) — Mark (Kellan Lutz)

and Sean (Jesse Williams) are friends and co-workers who indulge in a little industrial espionage, netting them $5 million from selling their company’s secrets.

After bringing home their loot and settling in for some celebration with their wives, a charming neighbor shows up and he’s invited it (he brought wine!). The new guest (Jamie Bamber) draws a gun, takes everyone hostage and demands the money.

So begins the violent game of cross, double-cross. The action is tight and slick, but the film feels like a gritty old-school crime caper.

How to protect yourself from card skimmers

o you remember when we had no credit cards?

I barely remember those days when you had to carry cash or a checkbook Most of us rarely carry cash; we have credit and debit cards.

If we don’t have our cards, we have apps on our phones that allow us to pay.

But many of us are aware of a new threat to debit and credit cards.

The West Columbia Police Department has 30 new body cameras.

“We’ll take some time to train our department on how to use the cameras,” said West Columbia Police Chief Dennis Tyndall.

The cameras will be in service soon.

While there has been a large amount of attention on body cameras for police officers in the last couple of years, the use of the cameras is not new for West Columbia.

“We have used body cameras before,” said Tyndall.

Tyndall has secured millions in grants for the WCPD. Body cameras are one of the innovations he introduced before they became a trend.

The nature and quality of the cameras has changed, said Assistant Chief Scott Morrison.

“The cameras we had before did not last as long. And the technology was not there yet,” he said.

Morrison called the cameras the department had before “button cams.” Technology has made higher quality cameras.

Tyndall said the cameras will show video and address discrepancies.

He said video is valuable especially in domestic violence cases.

“The victim will tell us one thing during the arrest, but then in court the story will change,” said Tyndall.

He said a couple may make up and the victim may decide to protect the person arrested.

Beware skimmers Basically, a skimmer is a small piece of hardware that sits over the top of a card reader and steals the credit card information.

Take a look at your credit cards.

The magnetic black strip on the back electronically holds all of your credit card information to be sent and verified for purchases.

The information in this strip is what they try to copy.

How? In almost all cases, the skimmers are attachments on gas pumps, ATM machines and outside card readers that fit over the built-in card reader. Once

“It’s important to have evidence in court,” said Tyndall.

The video will provide a record.

He said perceptions are sometimes altered during an incident and the video will help provide a record when memory fails.

“If anything is forgotten, you can look at the camera,” he said. “Or when the adrenaline is flowing, it’s hard to remember everything.”

He said the video will tell the true story.

The most sophisticated ones actually allow your purchase to happen as it stores your information.

Once they have your card information, they need the pin number for debit cards.

A small camera is placed to capture your pin as you type it in.

Since almost all debit cards are credit cards as well, pins are not necessary.

Most skimmers will skip this step and just get the card number.

What to look for If a machine has a skimmer on it, the skimmer will not be attached as well as the factory built card reader.

Push on it. Wiggle it. Give your card a little wiggle as you insert it.

If little arrows on the card reader point to the card reader and they are partially covered, do not use it.

This is a sign something else is attached to the card reader.

Look around. Does the card reader normally light up?

Are other readers around you lighting up?

If that one does not, it could indicate that a skimmer is sitting over the top and blocking the light.

What to do If you suspect that an ATM or gas pump has a skimmer on it, don’t use it.

Go inside if possible and report it.

Sometimes no matter what we do bad guys will find a way to get what they want.

Should your card information be stolen, call the bank.

They will work with you to reverse all charges.

Remember credit transactions can be stopped almost immediately and reversed.

Debit transactions take almost a week as it is considered a cash transaction.

Blowfish Home Run: Families give players a home away from home

After a late game in the wee hours, Lexington County Blowfish players need: A welcoming home.

A familiar room.

A waiting bed.

Host families make those three a home run.

Michael and Tiffany Raines have been “hitting them out the park” for four years.

“Hosting players is a way to be involved in the community that has been great for our family,” Michael Raines said.

“We commit to give them a place to stay, a place to prepare food and wash their clothes.”

Blowfish owners Bill and Vicki Shanahan call the host families “the heart of our program.”

Before the season starts, players and families are carefully screened.

Providing transportation and food are not part of the commitment, although the Raines consider the players part of their family and are generous in their offerings.

Local business helps fight 3rd-world mosquito rampage Lexington 2 to offer online registration

By spreading diseases like Zika, malaria, West Nile virus and dengue fever, mosquitoes are responsible for 725,000 deaths a year, according to the World Health Organization.

That makes them the deadliest animal on the planet.

While Southerners think of them as an annoyance, they're the ambassadors of death to the impoverished.

"We don't have that same fear here," said Mosquito Joe of Lake Murray franchisee Trey Powell.

"Because of aggressive mosquitocontrol efforts in America, those risks are reduced tremendously. If we're bitten by a mosquito, we don't immediately think, 'Oh my God, I might have a deadly disease now.'"

The recent spread of the Zika virus awakened Americans to the potential threat mosquitoes impose, Powell said. But it's been a longtime issue across the world.

In a partnership with the United Nations' Nothing But Net program, Mosquito Joe locations across the nation are supplying insecticidecoated mosquito bed nets to thirdworld countries.

Most species of mosquito are nighttime biters. That means people in impoverished countries with no pest control are most vulnerable while they're sleeping.

"We have daytime biters in South Carolina," Powell said, "but most species are nighttime biters. Installing one of these nets over their beds will tremendously reduce the risk of being infected."

Exposed sleepers can be bitten hundreds of times overnight, he explained, but the net kills mosquitoes on contact.

Powell needs local residents' help.

"For every new customer who signs up with Mosquito Joe during Mosquito Control Awareness Week (June 25-July 1), we'll donate $10 – or one net – to the cause," he said.

"It's an efficient charity and I like knowing exactly where my money is going, dollar for dollar, when I donate."

Powell said his goal is to net 100 new customers for a donation of 100 nets.

Lexington School District 2 wants to make student registration more convenient.

Beginning this school year, they'll be joining Lexington School District 1 and Lexington-Richland School District 5 in offering online registration.

InfoSnap uses Internet technology to eliminate the need for packets of registration forms, said Janet Dedmon District Instructional Technology Coach at the Lexington 2 board meeting on June 15.

For families with more than one student in the district, common information will only have to be entered into the system once. Then it will just have to be updated each year with no need to fill out new packets every year, said Dedmon.

InfoSnap will be required for new students in the 2017-18 school year and will be required for all of the

district’s students by the beginning of the 2018-19 school year.

InfoSnap will allow all records and student and parent information to be kept in an online account, from medical records and proof of residency to emergency information and volunteer forms.

According to Chief Communications Officer Mary Beth Hill, Lexington School District 1 has been using InfoSnap for some time. "(School year) 2017-18 will be our fifth year using InfoSnap," she said.

The upcoming school year won't be District 5's first go-round, either, and officials say the process will be even easier come September.

"In its first year, District 5 had about 85% of parents register their child online," the district said in a news release. "This year, District 5 is pleased to add an 'Express' option to Registration Gateway."

Blowfish to honor Vietnam War veterans on July 3

Every veteran deserves a proper salute for their service to America.

Among groups of veterans, those who returned from Vietnam endured exceptional controversy and were often scoffed by the public they signed up — or were forced — to protect.

The Lexington County Blowfish will be paying tribute to those veterans on July 3 with Vietnam Veterans Recognition Night, a special recognition service for the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Vietnam War. The night begins with a pregame recognition ceremony for which all Vietnam veterans are invited to join each other on the field at Lexington County Baseball Stadium before a veteran-represented first pitch is thrown.

County unemployment ticks up slightly

One thing is for sure: Lexington County people aren't allergic to sweat.

But according to the latest numbers, the county’s unemployment rate rose to 3.1% after registering 3% in April.

The April figure was the county's lowest since a 2.7% unemployment rate in December 2000.

Across the state, however, unemployment fell to 4.1% in May from 4.3% in April.

Gov. Henry McMaster touted efforts around the state to provide jobs for South Carolinians.

"With the state's unemployment rate at a near 17-year low, it's important that we ensure that South Carolinians are trained and

ready," he said.

"The fact that companies around the world know our workforce is one of the best is a major factor in our future prosperity. We must continue to build on that successful reputation."

Tied with Jasper County, Lexington County lags behind only Charleston County, which had an unemployment rate of 2.9% in May. Compared to a year ago, however, unemployment has fallen more than half a point from 3.7% in May 2016.

S.C. Department of Employee Workforce research shows that Lexington County's workforce is 147,600 strong, with only 4,519 unemployed.

In April, the county had 147,879 potential workers with 4,469 registered as unemployed.

And she had a secret.

With Mary off the hook the matter faded, swept from public attention by the war’s growing casualty lists.

Was Mary Lincoln the actual leaker? We’ll never know. But historians agree that at the very least, she had some serious 'splainin' to do to Abe. These days, President Trump clearly doesn’t enjoy being the victim of leaks.

But no president ever does.

Not even Lincoln.
