FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY: Bass: Fair. Captain Doug Lown reports that first thing in the morning some fish can be found shallow feeding on bait, and later in the day fish can be found around rocky points where they will take Carolina rigs. Throwing topwaters early in the creeks can also catch fish.

Crappie: Excellent. Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that crappie fishing has been very strong with minnows fished over brush in about 15-20 feet of water.

Striped bass: Good. Captain Brad Taylor reports that first thing free lines and planer boards will catch fish, and after that down lines in the 40-foot range have been productive.

Catfish: Good. Captain Chris Simpson (864-9922352) reports that fancasting cut herring and dip baits around humps has been productive for channel catfish.

It’s a Dog’s Life

Shoe Salesman Two elderly women were trying on shoes in a store.

When the salesman slipped a shoe onto one woman’s foot, the end of his tie got caught beneath her heel.

Unaware of his predicament, she stood up and started toward the mirror.

For a few seconds, the salesman found himself crawling along the floor beside her, trying to get her attention.

“Look, Martha,” her friend said. “He wants to go home with you!”

Intermission The symphony is playing Beethoven’s Ninth. During a long break, the bass players decide to slip out to the local pub and have a few drinks.

Suddenly one realizes they have been gone for a while and says “We’ve got to get back.”

Another says, “Relax, we’ve got plenty of time. I tied a string around the conductor’s score and he’ll have a time getting it squared away.”

As they come back into the concert hall, a patron in the audience notices the confusion by the conductor and says, “Something seems wrong up there.”

Local Fire Department A fire started on some grassland near a small farm.

The fire department from the nearby town was called to put the fire out.

The fire proved to be more than the small town fire department could handle, so someone suggested that a rural volunteer fire department be called.

The volunteer fire department arrived in a dilapidated old fire truck. They drove straight towards the fire and

stopped right in the middle of the flames. The volunteer firemen jumped off the truck and frantically started spraying water in all directions.

Soon they had snuffed out the center of the fire, dividing the flames into two easily controllable parts.

The farmer was so impressed with the volunteer fire department’s work and so grateful that his farm and crops had been spared, that he presented the volunteer fire department with a check for $1000.

A local news reporter asked the volunteer fire captain what the department planned to do with the funds.

“That should be obvious,” he responded, “the first thing we’re gonna do is get the brakes fixed on that stupid fire truck.

Dalmatian Duties A carpool mom was delivering a station wagon full of kids to their homes one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog.

The children fell to discussing the dog’s duties.

“No,” said another, “he’s just for good luck.”

Then a third child brought the argument to a close.

“They use the dog,” she said firmly, “to find the fire hydrant.”

“So what do you do?” asked his friend.

“I send him to MY room!” exclaimed the father.

Psychiatric Help A patient underwent intense therapy to rid him of the delusion that a huge fortune awaited him. Weather balloon or a government cover up?

MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

Roswell, N.M..

MacLeod grew up in an Air Force family with a jet pilot as her father.

It was only natural for a bright inquisitive child to ask her father if there really are such things as Unidentified Flying Objects.

Her father’s stoic reply to his oldest daughter was hardly illuminating.

“No comment,” he said.

Perhaps that was what the Air Force told all its personnel to say if asked such troubling questions.

Being a good military man and a lawyer besides, he may have been only following orders.

For a bright child, it only fueled her curiosity.

Over the years, both of us have read widely in the tellall books about people spirited away by aliens and returned to talk about it.

We’ve read about others who have sighted alien aircraft or felt they had some communications with people from outer space.

How much of it is true is anybody’s guess. The people who wrote these books seem quite convinced that they had a strange experience and want to share it.

Both of us were familiar with the so-called Roswell UFO story. Being in this part of the world, we felt compelled to visit the UFO Museum here.

A recreation of what some think an alien who landed in the desert near Roswell might have looked like.

Where it began

UFO researcher Stanton Friedman first read about Roswell in the early 1980s and began his search for information and witnesses.

This brought him to Roswell looking for the public information officer who had been at Roswell Army Air Field when the incident occurred in 1947.

That officer was Lt. Walter Haut who still lived in Roswell and remembered the orders from his commanding officer.

Friedman’s investigation led him to many military and civilian sources who had information to add.

Lt. Haut told him that on July 8, 1947, as public information officer he issued a news release under orders from base commander Col. William Blanchard.

The release said basically

that the Air Force has possession of a flying saucer.

The next day Gen. Roger Ramey issued another news release stating it was not a UFO but a weather balloon.

Since then, the Roswell incident has been shrouded in mystery with more questions than answers.

Books, movies and TV documentaries about aliens and space ships have followed and the UFO controversy continues.

Finding a home

In early 1990, Haut proposed a home for information about the Roswell incident and other UFO phenomena.

With another Roswell participant Glenn Dennis they sought a home for a UFO museum.

Roswell Realtor Max Littell helped find the first location

for the museum.

The International UFO Museum & Research Center was opened to visitors in fall of 1992.

People from around the world travel to Roswell to visit the museum and simply “be in Roswell where it happened.”

Ask questions

We walked through the museum in a few hours including watching a film about crop circles, UFO sightings, Area 51, ancient astronauts and abductions and other unexplained phenomenon.

We read through an extensive collection of newspaper and magazine articles and letters from ordinary folks including the late Sen. Barry Goldwater.

The exhibits are designed to encourage you to ask ques-

tions — not to convince you to believe one way or another.

We were told by the librarian that many visitors come numerous times and spend days doing research.

Since its opening, the museum has outgrown two locations, finally landing in the old Plains Theater on North Main Street.

Its number of visitors has become the envy of many other tourist attractions.

Local residents and the Roswell Chamber of Commerce celebrate the anniversary of the Roswell incident the first week of July.

The annual Roswell UFO Festival draws the curious, the silly and the serious.

Activities range from carnivals to trade shows, alien costume contests to UFO lec-

tures, Fourth of July fireworks to a parade downtown, Hollywood celebrities to children in costume.

UFO researchers present the most up-to-date information on the subject.

Where do you go after a top role in opera?

T

his summer, Katie Gatch of Lexington will appear in the Berlin Opera Academy production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” a rare opportunity for someone from a small South Carolina town.

In the second of a two-part series, she talks with Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bellune about what other options may be open to her as a career.

Q. Do you see opera as a career or some other endeavor in music or theater?

A. Opera is my number one passion but I also love performing in musical theater. Every time I go to see a Broadway show a little spark ignites that reminds me, “Don’t forget about Broadway as an option.”

As with any career in the entertainment business, it is important to stay motivated and determined to keep auditioning, keep singing no matter what.

Performers know too well how to deal with rejection. I have heard people who have made it as performers say you must expect to get one in 40 jobs you audition for.

At times it seems impossible and not worth the hard work.

But I have accepted that I will never reach my happiness potential if I do not try my hardest to achieve opera or Broadway singer status.

I plan to audition for graduate schools this year in hope of getting my Master’s degree in opera or voice performance. I believe a few more years of training and stage experience will give me the time and resume I need to work toward my goal.

taught me two years in high school, Jacob Will was my voice professor throughout my four years of college.

Dr. Donald Gray has been my voice teacher since my graduation from USC in 2013. Dr. Gray holds a special place in my heart because he has been the one to push me to follow my dream.

After I finished at USC, I had a teacher’s certificate.

My plan was to begin teaching elementary school music. But I wanted to try to pursue opera and Dr. Gray has been so encouraging.

He is working with me on my role of the Queen of the Night in Berlin before I go to Germany. I am thankful for his presence in my life.

I also appreciatr my amazing piano accompanist, Sharon Rattray. She has been playing for me for three years.

Other inspirations to me are Ellen Schlaefer, director of Opera Studies at USC, Dr. Lynn Kompass, my coach for my first role in an opera, and all of the friends I have made singing with Opera at USC.

Q. What advice would you give others interested in similar careers?

A. It’s one thing to love the feeling of being on stage and performing for an audience.

Q. Who has had the strongest influence on you in music and how?

A. I feel incredibly blessed to have many people influencing me as a musician.

My family has always been 100% supportive of my passion, especially my aunt, Lessie Polk, who started working with me as a singer when I was 5 or 6 years old.

She coached me through my first solo in our church and every solo and audition I sang until high school. I am grateful for the foundation in vocal training she gave me.

I never enjoyed practicing piano but I look forward to singing practice each day.

Make a habit out of practicing every day, even if only 10 minutes on certain days. Who doesn’t have 10 minutes to spare?

Most of the times you are rejected from an audition, it is not because of your talent.

Directors look for something in particular. Not getting the role you wanted was based on someone’s opinion. You are not going to be everyone’s cup of tea.

With every audition I sing, it is easier to wrap my head around that concept and not let it discourage me from trying again.

It is a lot of work. Talent is only a small part of the process. Find a way to incorporate music or art into your life. Live entertainment is an amazing experience. Advocate for the arts wherever you go.

Of course, the government wants control over the boy, and it has a quick-thinking NSA specialist (Adam Driver) trying to unravel the mystery while the manhunt unfolds. Joel Edgerton and Kirsten Dunst also are there to assist getting Alton to his destination, but what awaits him there remains shrouded in intrigue.

thunderstorms hiding behind stoic faces. Some viewers might not find satisfaction in the concluding act, but everyone can appreciate the road it takes to get there.

“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” (PG-13) -- More than a decade after their endearingly quirky nuptials, Toula and Ian (Nia Vardalos and John Corbett) are trying to re-spice their relationship while anxiously preparing for the college-departure of their eye-rolling teen daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouras). It also turns out that Toula’s parents were never technically married because the priest back in Greece never signed the marriage certificate, so there’s another overblown wedding to plan as a centerpiece for the family comedy.

Those who were pleasantly surprised by the charming nature of the original will sadly see anything unique and surprising washed away -- it’s strictly formula and gags-bynumbers this time around.

Much of the cast returns for this sequel, but many of them seems at a loss when it comes to reproducing that initial charm.

A CHILD’S STOLEN OSCAR How Her Belief She Would Get It Back Was Rewarded Every once in a while, history provides a story where good triumphs in the end. Not always, but it happens more often than you’d think. This is one of those tales. So sit back and learn what happened when a child’s Oscar was taken by a thief.

I’m a fan of old black white classic films from the 1930s and 40s. It was a time of unrivaled talent on the silver screen. And Margaret O’Brien’s cheerful face was right there alongside the greats from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

You may not remember her name, but you’d know her in a heartbeat if you’ve seen 1944’s “Meet Me in St. Louis”.

She darn near steals the show as Tootie, the lovable, spunky six year-old daughter. Here’s another hint: the dad is about to drag the family cross-country to New York

City, leaving St. Louey just as the much-anticipated 1904 World’s Fair is about to the begin. Said family is naturally distraught, and in one of moviedom’s biggest tearjerker scenes of all time, Judy Garland tries to cheer up Tootie by singing the maudlin, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”. Yeah, Margaret O’Brien was that little girl.

The movie was a huge hit, and she was rewarded with a special Oscar statuette just for kids called the Academy Juvenile Award. It was presented only twelve times, starting in 1934 with (who else?) Shirley Temple and concluding with Hayley Mills in 1960. (From then on, children competed in the regular Best Actor/Actress, Best Supporting Actor/Actress categories with the adults.)

It was a scaled down copy of the regular Oscar, standing just seven inches tall.

Bob Hope, who emceed the awards show for many years, jokingly called it an “Oscarette.”

Her mother wrote a short acceptance speech, which was dutifully memorized. But young Margaret was understandably blown away by all the excitement, and when the big moment came she forgot the speech, blurting out, “I don’t know what to say. Thank you so much!” As she dryly recalled later, “My mother wasn’t very pleased.”

The roles kept coming, including Beth March in Little Women. (A movie I’ve never understood, by the way. Marmee? Who the heck calls their mother Marmee? It must have been a Yankee thing. But I digress.)

Unfortunately, puberty eventually came, too, and the roles dried up as she progressed into her teenage years. Margaret O’Brien learned the painful lesson almost every child star has experienced the hard way: Cute Kid very, very rarely makes the transition to Successful Adult

But Margaret had a powerful reminder of her glory days, her little Oscar, and no one could ever take that from her.

Until someone did.

Margaret was 17 years-old in 1954, living in southern California with her mother.

(Her father, a circus performer, had died before she was born.) One room in their home was dedicated to Margaret’s movie mementoes, her awards and, above all, her Oscarette.

One day the family’s maid asked if she could take Margaret’s little Oscar and two others awards home with her and polish them. Sure, the mom said; the maid had done that before. No problem.

But this time, the maid never came back to work.

Three days passed. Margaret’s mom called the woman and fired her, ordering her to return the awards ASAP. The strain was too much for the mother, who suffered from a heart condition. She died soon afterward.

Losing her only remaining parent was naturally upsetting and Margaret didn’t have time to think about her missing statuette amid her grief. When she finally called about it a few months later, the phone number was disconnected and the former maid had moved without leaving a forwarding address.

Margaret O’Brien’s Oscarette was gone for good.

When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences heard about the theft, they sent her a replacement.

Margaret was grateful; but it wasn’t the same. If you ever lost a wedding ring or class ring or something that is deeply personal, you know how she felt.

Everyone told her to let it go and move on. But Margaret clung to a hope deep in her heart that one day, no matter how long it took; she would be reunited with her special statuette.

If this story were an old Hollywood movie, pages would rapidly blow off a calendar at this point.

The 1950s gave way to the 60s, which became the 70s, then the 80s, and finally the 90s. Then, as they said in those wonderfully cheesy old movies, the plot thickened.

Two dealers in Hollywood movie collectibles were at a California flea market one day, pawing through the odds and ends you find there. One reached into a box and pulled out a miniature Oscar. Margaret O’Brien’s name was engraved on it. They split the $500 cost and bought it.

The Academy’s executive director spotted a photo of the statuette in a catalog for an upcoming auction of movie memorabilia, contacted the dealers and told them the back story. They graciously agreed to return it to its rightful owner.

And so on February 7, 1995, almost exactly 50 years from the moment she first received

it, Margaret O’Brien’s stolen Oscar was presented to her again … making her one of the very few recipients who’ve received the same Oscar twice.

Here’s the advice she shared that day: “For all those people who have lost or misplaced something that was dear to them, as I have, never give up the dream of searching – never let go of the hope that you’ll find it because after all these many years, at last, my Oscar has been returned to me!”

As far as miracles go, this one doesn’t compare to parting the Red Sea or feeding thousands of people with a couple of loaves of bread and a handful of fish. But to the woman who never stopped hoping, it meant the world.

Cling to your fondest dream, regardless how distant and improbable it seems. You never know; sometimes miracles really happen.

Just ask Margaret O’Brien.
