FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY: Striper: Good. Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that the best fish are being caught on down-lines fished in 55-70 feet of water in the lower lake. The free-line bite has declined and is mainly yielding smaller fish now.

Crappie: Good. Captain Brad reports that good numbers of crappie are still being caught over brush in 18-25 feet of water and around deeper docks. Both minnows and jigs will catch fish.

Catfish: Good. Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-

2352) reports that fan-casting a variety of baits – including dip baits and cut herring – in 10-25 feet of water has been productive for channel catfish.

Bass: Fair to good. Captain Doug Lown reports that largemouth can be found from shallow to mid-depth to deep water. The fishing has been far better early and late. Buzzbaits fished around the banks when there is some shade will catch fish, and plastic worms fished off points have also been working.

I’ve said it before and will say it again.

Not all games are bad for you.

Ten years ago Nintendo came out with a new gaming system called a Wii. This system allowed _ movement not seen in gaming before. It actually tracked your movements so that you “exercised” to win.

Now a company called Niantic has created a new game you download to your smart phone, Android or iPhone.

It is called Pokemon Go. If you have children or grandchildren 13 to 35, you probably have heard about this game. If you haven’t let me explain why you should get it.

Pokemon Go, is a mobile take on an old game from the 90s.

It has absolutely no point except to be the best at training ugly — and a few cute — little monsters.

So why should someone like you play it?

Easy! Exercise.

The game actually tracks you as you walk around and find the Pokemon. You have to get outside and take a walk or ride to find certain points in the game.

To find eggs, incubate and hatch them, you must walk a certain distance.

Another great reason to play is coordination.

To catch a little Pokemon monster, you have to coordinate tossing what is called a Poke Ball at it to catch it. My 7-year-old loves this part.

The only bad parts of this game is that it must be open and running for it to track.

It is a huge battery drain. So be prepared to charge it after your walk.

It is a great way to make a morning walk more fun. And you may even break your own records because you are having so much fun.

Salad 4 medium zucchini 2 cups organic cherry tomatoes, chopped

1 zucchini, cut in half lengthwise

1/4 cup shaved Parmesan cheese

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil sea salt, to tastepepper, to taste

1/4 cup Nakano Rice Vinegar – Natural or Nakano Organic Rice Vinegar – Natural

4 tablespoons Cashew Ranch Dressing (recipe below)

Heat grill to medium.

Separate chicken, corn, asparagus, bell pepper and zucchini evenly into two bowls. Drizzle bowls with Cashew Ranch Dressing.

Cashew Ranch Dressing Makes: 1 cup 1 cup raw, unsalted cashews 3/4 cup almost-boiling water 3 tablespoons Nakano Rice Vinegar – Natural or Nakano Organic Rice Vinegar – Natural 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon dried dill 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives

In food processor, puree cashews, water, rice vinegar,

garlic, dill, oregano, salt and pepper 3-4 minutes, until creamy. For best results, drizzle water in grad­ually as food processor is running. Stir in chives.

Note: Leftover dressing can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to seven days.

Nutritional information per tablespoon: 50 calories; 4 g total fat; 0.5 g saturated fat; 110 mg sodium; 3 g carbs; 1 g sugar; 2 g protein.

Cut avocado in half, remove pit and scoop out flesh leaving thin wall of avocado. Dice avocado flesh and set shell aside for serving.

In small bowl, combine tuna, celery, carrot, onion, vinegar, oil, mustard, salt and pepper. Mix well. Gently stir in diced avocado.

Scoop mixture into avocado shells and serve with brown rice crackers.

Painting with light captures New Mexico MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute of it. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

Albuquerque, N.M.

Before we left Albuquerque, we visited Butch Phillips in his photo studio in Old Town.

As a photographer, Butch is a modern Ansel Adams.

Like the great naturalist photographer of the last century, Butch paints pictures with his camera.

Butch is a retired computer programmer married to a doctor. They live, he confesses, on her income. This gives him the time to make photos.

Like Adams, he works in black and white, occasionally in sepia, and, like Adams, he uses film. He prints, masks and frames his work on archival paper and coats it with a preservative to prolong life.

Butch’s landscapes capture the awe nature holds for him: Water surging down a sheer rock wall, clouds billowing over a mountain, an abandoned church or an ancient windmill standing silently beneath a brooding sky.

Liquid light

His philosophy of photography is painting with light.

“Light is like a liquid,” he says. It ‘drenches’ a landscape when the sun appears suddenly from behind a cloud. It will ‘leak’ into a darkened room through even the tiniest hole.

“For me, light is further like a liquid in that it ‘quenches’ an inner thirst, a deep craving “I have to capture its effects on film, to show in a photographic image the sometimes subtle, sometimes dramatic interplay of light and object.

“If my images cause you to respond emotionally, or in any way to sense the drama that I felt when making them, then I have succeeded.”

He sells his prints for as little as $100 and as much as $500. We loved their imagery but wondered where we would hang one of them.

No one else was in his studio so he was willing to negotiate on price. But we couldn’t get over the notion that we would have to hang one of his prints in the right place.

Where was that?

Unable to decide, we made no commitment. When we left, thanking him for his time and sharing his story with us, he gave me a defeated look.

I don’t think he had sold a print all day.

Another painter

We had driven north the next day and stopped at the Purple Adobe Lavender Farm.

Walking around the farm had worked up an appetite.

In the shaded cool of the farm tea room, we tasted their homemade chocolate bundt cake glazed with jam made from their own strawberries and a scone with homemade apple sauce and topped with vanilla ice cream.

You can see we were keeping an eye on our diet.

That would be our lunch.

countered two refugees from California, the Taxachusetts of the West. They told us they live here now and asked where we were from.

I figured they had escaped California before Governor Brown and the state legislature found more ways to confiscate all of their money.

One had fallen in love with her smart phone camera and wanted to show her photos.

I was prepared to suffer through photos of her snaggle-toothed grandchildren staring into the camera.

Was I surprised.

This lady was not Ansel Adams but he would have envied the ease with which she had taken these stunning photographs of New Mexico.

Adams laboriously lugged, often on foot, his heavy cameras — a Hasselblad, a Korona view, a Polaroid Land, a Leica, a Linhof and a 35mm Zeiss Contax. His view cameras required large and expensive pieces of film. You don’t just shoot them randomly and hope you got a good image.

Adams did it early in the morning and late in the afternoon when the sunlight is at its most dramatic.

His exposures sometimes took several minutes. That meant he had the extra weight of a tripod, too.

Often he didn’t know how good the picture would be until he reached the darkroom and developed his film.

He made in late in the afternoon of November 1, 1941, on a shoulder of U.S. 84-285.

The photograph became so popular that Adams personally made over 1,300 prints of it during his long career.

On October 17, 2006, Sotheby’s auctioned a print of his photograph for $609,600.

If you have with a smart phone or digital camera today, you know you will see in a split second how the picture you just snapped looks.

It doesn’t seem fair that we can so easily shoot but, if you look at Adams work, you see the pains he took to deliver photographic masterpieces.

Unfortunately for 14-year-old Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peedo), he’s not in a band, he can’t play music, and he’s the lowest-of-the-low on the social ladder at his Dublin school. Everyone starts somewhere. With his burn-out brother as a spirit guide, Conor turns a few stolen riffs and a gaggle of other misfits into a band worthy of his crush.

In the movie, Baker is offered a chance to play himself in his own biopic, and the experience merges with his flashbacks and sparks in him a real chance to course-correct, with the generous support of the actress hired to play his wife (Carme Ejogo). The inventive storytelling provides sturdy support for two outstanding performances.

“Hardcore Henry”

It’s the first film (to my knowledge) to successfully be filmed start to finish in first-person perspective -- and almost entirely in over-the-top action sequences. Lexington High School Enjoys ‘Golden Year’ In Sports

A “golden goal” by Megan Classer in sudden death earned the undefeated Lexington High School girls’ soccer team its first-ever Class 4A title.

The highlight of the spring sports season to close the 2015-16 school year seemed fitting.

Based on the final tabulations of the Director’s Cup, the award given by the S.C. Association of Athletic Administrators to honor top-performing high school athletics programs, this was truly a “Golden Year” for Lexington.

Lexington placed third in the Class 4A Division, its highest finish since winning the cup in 2012-13.

Only Wando and Dorman scored higher than Lexington, which finished ahead of fourth-place Dutch Fork.

“All of our sports had a great year this year for Lexington High School,” Athletics Director Josh Stepp said. “It goes beyond wins and losses for us when it comes to our definition of success. It was a great year to be a WIldcat.”

During the school year, Lexington won 11 region titles, two Lower State titles (girls’ soccer, football) and made nine 4A Lower State Appearances to go with the state championships won in girls’ soccer and cheer team and state runners-up in football and women’s golf.

Other honors Among the other athletic highlights:

•The Lexington High School football team sets a school record for consecutive wins and victories in a season (13).

The 2016-17 school year will offer bigger challenges for Lexington. It moves up to Class 5A where it’s realigned Region 5-5A will now include Dutch Fork and Spring Valley.

“As a whole, we just need to continue to get better,” Stepp said. “Moving into 5A doesn’t allow for us to be comfortable and satisfied, we want to be the best athletic program in the state year in and year out regardless of classification. Our coaches and athletes know that Best is the standard, as we will strive everyday to get there.”

Good News & Bad News Bob was in a terrible motorcycle accident and his legs weren’t in great shape, to say the least. After a couple of weeks of therapy, it soon became clear to the Doctor that they were just pushing off the inevitable. Due however, to Bob’s frail condition, the Doctor was afraid to give him the bad news. Instead, he gave the sorry job to Bob’s wife of 40 years, hoping that she would know how to break the bad news to him ever so slowly and gently. “Honey”, said Bob’s wife Eva the next morning, “I’ve got good news and bad news, which one would you like to hear first?” Bob, always in a morbid state, responded in his usual grumpy voice, “what do I care? Just give me the bad news!” “Well dear,” said Eva cupping Bob’s hand with her two hands, “I hate to have to tell you this, but it seems like your legs are going to have to be taken off.”

Bob, barely able to hold his voice from cracking croaked out, “Eva, what’s the good news?”

“The good news” said Eva happily, “is that that the gardener that was in here just before, said he may be interested in buying your slippers from you!”

Brian walked into work and saw his coworker looking particularly sour. “Hey what’s wrong buddy?”

His friend looked up with a forlorn expression on his face.

“You remember last month how my Grandmother’s sister passed on and left me $2,000?”

“Yes,” said Brian nodding.

“And you remember how the month before that her brother passed on and left me $5000?

“Uh huh” said Brian again.

“Well this month is almost over,” said the coworker with a wave of his hand “and ………………..NOTHING!”

Pregnancy

Brian’s stress level was at unsurpassed levels. His wife Maggie was in labor and Brian was sure it was time to head to the hospital. Breathing heavily, Brian grabbed the phone and called the doctor.

“MY WIFE, SHE’S READY, SHOULD WE COME?” The doctor tried to relax the poor fellow, “just try to relax, now tell me how much time elapses between the contractions?”

“SHIRLEY!” Brian screamed on the top of his lungs, “HOW MUCH TIME IN BETWEEN THE CONTRACTIONS? TEN MINUTES? OK, TEN MINUTES IN BETWEEN!” “And is this her first child?” Questioned the doctor. “NO YOU STUPID NITWIT, THIS IS HER HUSBAND!”

George Armstrong Custer, dashing Civil War hero and flamboyant Indian fighter, plus all 267 of his men, had been wiped out in a ferocious battle with Native American braves.

The defeat cast a shadow over centennial celebrations and launched a legend that lingers nearly a century and a half later.

It had been a remarkable ride for Custer up till then.

He became the Union Army’s youngest general at age 23 and caught the public’s fancy through glowing newspaper accounts of his personal bravery, his long curly hair (which he scented with cinnamon oil), and even his wartime wedding to a beautiful bride.

But the post-war years hadn’t treated him as well.

His commission as major general was a brevet promotion, valid only as long as the Civil War lasted. When the ink dried at Appomattox, the man many people still call “General Custer” dropped three slots to the rank he held the day he died: lieutenant colonel. He was twice court-martialed, and although he beat the rap both times, his shining star was tarnished. He had to regain its former luster, and Custer knew that meant scoring another big win on the battlefield.

Computer Problems

Becky was 73 and just got her first computer. After her son spent over 2 hours teaching her how to use it, she was sure she knew everything there was to know about computers. Unfortunately though, one day she couldn’t get it to start so she promptly called an IT guy to come over and take a look at it. The IT guy managed to fix the issue in a few minutes and was on his way.

Becky was proud when she overheard the IT guy on the phone with his boss telling him about the issue, she was sure it meant it was a serious issue and she was sure she took care of it the right way.

“Excuse me if you don’t mind me asking,” asked Becky to the man on his way out. “I couldn’t help overhearing you on the phone with your boss.

Lawyer Trying To Prove His Clients Innocence Backfires A fellow’s wife went missing and being that everyone knew that he and his wife were in a big fight he was accused of murdering her and disposing of the body. When witness after witness came to the stand testifying to all sorts of horrible threats that the accused threatened his wife with and things were looking quite dim for the accused, the man’s lawyer got up to the stand.

“Ladies and Gentleman of the jury I have something quite exciting to tell you, if you would all please direct your attention towards the door behind me on my left you will see the supposedly dead women walk in on her own two feet.” There was a loud murmuring in the courtroom as all eyes turned towards the door.

If George Armstrong (known in this intimate circle by the nickname “Autie,” the childhood mispronunciation of his middle name) hadn’t made the Custer name famous, Tom would have. During the Civil War he received the Medal of Honor not once, but twice … becoming the first of only 16 men in American history to gain that distinction.

First Lieutenant James Calhoun, 30, was the Custers’ brother-in-law. He met sister Margaret while visiting the family six years earlier and fell head over heels in love.

They soon married. “Jimmi” was a charter member of the Custer Clan, as was his own brother-in-law Miles Moylan, who was also in a different part of the Battle of Little Bighorn and survived, going on to receive the Medal of Honor himself the next year.

Finally, Henry “Autie” Reed, 18, was Custer’s favorite nephew. His mother gave him his uncle’s very own nickname, and there was a close bond between the two.

Autie had been hired by the 7th Cavalry the month before as a civilian beef herder.

He volunteered his services on the Black Hills Expedition, and his uncles accepted. When the battle began, Autie’s boss told him to stay behind with the supply wagons where he belonged. Autie simply grinned and shouted, “You’re just mad because you can’t go!” as he rode off into history.

The Custer Clan forever vanished. Admired by some, loathed by others, their legacy endures to this day. They also teach us a fundamentally American lesson: if you must lose, that’s the way to do it, with everyone fighting down to the last bullet.

They were in life, and remain in death, the very embodiment of Shakespeare’s famous words in Henry V: “From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be rememberedWe few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he today that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother ...”
