Jamison, Burgiss names Lexington County Chronicle Co-Female Athletes of the Year

Airport High School track star Jayla Jamison has the ability to get wherever she wants.

Jamison is a rising eighth grader who qualified in four events in May’s South Carolina High School League track and field championships.

She was the only seventh-grader who qualified in more than two events in the competition for high schoolers. Jamison, 13, set school records in finishing second in the 400 meters and the 200 meters, third in the long-

jump and fifth in the 100 meters.

For her efforts, Jamison was named the Class 4A Track & Field Athlete of the Year by the S.C. Coaches Association of Women’s Sports.

“She’s special,” said Airport track coach Travis Barnes, who has been coaching various sports for 15 years.

He said lots of young athletes have dreams, but, Barnes said, Jamison has the talent and the ability to go as far as the U.S. Olympics.

He also said it is an honor for him to coach such a gifted athlete.

“It’s not just me,” Barnes said, “Everybody who sees her says it.”

Of the whole Airport track team, Barnes said Jamison is faster than all but a couple senior boys.

He also said Jamison works hard to get better and she runs year-round.

“She is a future record-breaker,” Barnes said. He said Jamison’s goals include college track and field and she has a relationship with University of South Carolina track coach Curtis Frye.

Barnes said Jamison has the talent to run for a college team now.

Jamison currently attends Pine Ridge Middle School.

She plays for the Pine Ridge basketball team and was All-Region, Barnes said.

And Jamison is not the only athlete in her family. Her father, Patrick, and mother, Felicia, were high school athletes. Felicia Jamison played basketball at Benedict College.

Jayla’s brother, Patrick, ran for the Airport track team and he runs track at USC-Upstate. He helps coach Jayla when he’s home.

Barnes also said her mother is not satisfied unless her daughter is working hard at her sport.

“She pushes her,” he said.

Gracyn Burgess There’s a long tradition of stellar golfers coming out of Lexington High School.

The latest to uphold the proud banner is Gracyn Burgess.

The rising junior and Clemson commitment was a dominant force on the high school links throughout the school year and now summer.

In the fall, she won five tournaments enroute to leading the Lady Wildcats to a first-ever Class 5A state title and 11th overall.

Burgess finished second behind White Knoll’s Jensen Castle which would not be the last time the two finished 1-2, respectively, at a golf tournament.

In December, Burgess erased a 100-point deficit to Bishop England’s Kathleen Sumner at the George Holliday Junior in Myrtle Beach to win the South Carolina Junior Golf Association’s Beth Daniel Player of the Year award.

She took on that role and not only did she thrive individually, but so did our team and her leadership was a huge part of that.”

Burgess’ play has drawn comparisions with 2015 Lexington Chronicle Female Athlete of the Year Lauren Stephenson.

Silver lining behind thunderstorm’s damage to Leeza’s Care Connection

very challenge presents an opportunity.

When a storm felled a tree on the house Leeza's Care Connection calls home, the Irmo High grad and TV celebrity took it as an opportunity.

Now she and her team are raising money to repair the house.

The former Entertainment Tonight TV hostess sent Chronicle readers answers to questions about what she's doing.

1. What's the story behind the story of your interest in community service through a project like Leeza's Care Connection?

We created in the world what we wished we had when my mom was going through her journey with Alzheimer's disease.

We felt so isolated, so misunderstood and so alone, and we figured others were struggling, too.

No one sends you a greeting card that says, "Congratulations, today is your first day as a caregiver!"

Instead, most people just hide and do their best to cope with no skills and no training.

2. What has this led you to do with local groups such as the Lexington Medical Center Foundation and what success has it had?

Being in a position to ask "now what" is a universal experience. If you're a husband, wife, son or daughter of someone who was just diagnosed with a chronic illness or disease, chances are you are trying to navigate health services and it can be overwhelming.

Groups like Lexington Medical Center are well

aware of this and realize what we offer is something that patients and families need and want.

It's a hand in glove relationship to work with the social service agencies, health providers and others to bolster support for care partners.

3. Since the damage to the house in St. Andrews, where are you in the recovery process?

A storm caused a tree to be uprooted and it crashed onto the roof where we provide our services. It left a gaping hole and forced us out while repairs are made.

We think it will be a couple of months at least. We were blessed by the neighborly act of kindness from St Mary's Church across the street which offered us space to keep doing our free programs, support groups and other services.

4. When you were a student in Irmo and later at Carolina, what were your dreams for your career?

I always knew I wanted to be a storyteller or reporter of some sort. It never mattered to me the message or the medium.

I've just always loved being the conduit through which stories find their way into people's lives.

From radio to entertainment shows to travel documentaries, I loved the pace and variety of news gathering and reporting.

I was always ambitious, but my goal was never to get rich or famous.

It was to achieve good things to allow me more opportunities to offer my sills and talents in the ways in which I wanted.

5. What did it take to go from dream to the reality of today? And how would you advise other young people with similar aspirations?

Dreams always come a size too big so we can grow into them, and my dreams have grown with me. The best view is always after the hardest climb, but these are the paths that come with the greatest obstacles; that's how you know you're on the right path. I think it's all about holding on and letting go.

Hold onto your values, your core operating system, the boundaries that are important for you. Let go of the need to be liked, the desire to always feel in control and the belief that you are what happened to you.

You're not. It's all about the optics through which you see things.

I have found great value in being an optimist and training that mental competence to work for me. It's not about positive thinking or just expecting good outcomes, it's about having the resilience to recover quickly every time you get knocked down.

If you know the punches are coming, you're never surprised but can always have a game plan to rebound.

If you don't like the way things are going, go another way. It's as simple as that.

It's like what John Wooden said: Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out.

Pranks, dares, and challenges are part of growing up.

Truth or Dare is one of the most popular games teenagers play. Unfortunately, the internet takes that to a whole new level.

Challenge games have been around a long time.

Remember playing chicken as a teenager? Steer your car into the path of another car and see who chickens out first?

Maybe you remember giving “Indian burns” to each other to see who can handle the most pain.

Yep. Both are pretty stupid.

As adults we look back and wonder, “What we were thinking back then?”

Here are a few of the more serious of the challenges that are making their way around social media these days:

he charm of the pre-Victorian era can nearly be exemplified by the use of elegant pieces such as this flower holder. This one is from a home in Charleston and features the regional Noisette rose as the floral pattern that covers the surface of the entire piece.

The small, cone shape allowed small garden flower stems to be inserted, making a bouquet out of even the most sparse of blooms. The purpose of a piece like this was to have a pleasant smelling bunch of blossoms to hold tightly to one’s nose as public streets were navigated. The lack of sanitation was at odds with the thoughts of Charleston ladies who held beauty and pleasant times in high regard. This feminine solution to the problem was implemented by ladies of all ages.

A close look at this example will show a curl at the end where one could brace the little finger, giving the owner a better chance of holding on to this treasure as she made her way along a cobblestone street. How nice to see the original “key” and chain still attached. These allowed the small pin of the key to be inserted into the open end of the flower holder, acting as a cross bar to secure the stems and hold them in place.

Pieces such as these were also used for wedding flowers, although not until the turn of the century.

This Tool of the civilized lady became more of a commercial item due to the Industrial Revolution. You can easily find many reproductions, called a “tussy mussy.” It is far more difficult to find an object such as the one pictured here. It was made for use, not just for show.

Luckily for all of us who love silver and the past, relics such as this provide a essential portal into the world we left behind.

Cinnamon challenge Ever tried to eat just straight cinnamon? It can burn a bit.

Well, the challenge here is to see who can eat the most without drinking anything.

Choking game Who can last the longest without air?

No, it isn't good enough to just hold your breath underwater anymore.

Now we have to add in a choking part.

Someone else closing off your airways so that you pass out. You win if you can last the longest. I think the problems with this challenge is pretty obvious. You can suffer brain damage and die.

Car surfing Ok, ok. I've seen pictures and video of this one from the '80s. We can't blame the internet for this one. We can however blame social media for upping the game and getting them to do crazier things while car surfing for video.

So what happens when you mix salt and ice? It causes some serious burns. Kids are giving themselves second and third degree burns during this challenge.

Apparently the whole idea is to dump salt into your hand and hold ice cubes to it. See who can handle the most pain.

Think you have a strong stomach? Google 'salt and ice' images are sickening. To think kids are doing this to themselves.

Butt chugging Oh yes, you read that right.

Ingesting alcohol through their rectums. The problem with this is that you don't know how drunk you are getting until it is too late. Teens are giving themselves alcohol poisoning.

Biting Seems innocent right?

Think a hickey with teeth.

Apparently, the vampire craze has gotten out of hand with kids actually biting each other and leaving open wounds. Imagine all the diseases that can be passed via a “love bite.”

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 357.86 (full pool is 360.00), and temperatures are in the mid-80s.

Clarity is good.

Lake Murray bass are firmly in summer mode, and veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that there isn't a lot of change in the overall pattern since the beginning of the month.

Early, there is a shallow bite around the banks, and after that you need to look around deeper channel points. Doug notes that if we get some rain and cloudy weather it can be a good time to look around the bank later into the day, particularly since deeper fish don't bite as well

when it is cloudy. When it is hot and sunny, you pretty much need to concentrate offshore outside of a small window first thing.

Tournament angler Andy Wicker of Pomaria has also spent time on Murray recently, and he notes that it's not taking a lot of weight to win tournaments.

In addition to finding some fish shallow early (before 8 a.m.) on topwaters like a buzzbait, frog or PopR, he has also found some schooling fish out over deeper water. Most of these fish seem to be in the 2 to 2½ pound range. They have also caught them in the same areas on the bottom around brush.

On the striped bass front, Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that the best action has been coming on down-lined herring fished in 40-60 feet of water.

Pretty much all of the fish are out on the main lake moving towards the lower pool, and there have even been some reports of fish caught in 80 feet along the dam.

Crappie fishing has been really good recently, and Brad reports that he is catching fish around brush in 15-20 feet of water at the mouths of major creeks on the upper part of the lake.

The fish have been 6-12 feet down, and they will pretty much only bite

toughies that are small as you can get.

In catfish news, Captain William Attaway (803-924-0857) reports that the spawn is winding down as in most of the area lakes.

That means that most of the fish are headed deeper, although they will come into shallower water to feed at night. Thirty feet is a good depth range to target during the day, while at night 15-25 feet is a good range.

Fish will be found off long points and humps, and fishing the deeper side of channel buoys on the lake is a good bet. For numbers of fish dip baits are hard to beat, while for a little better quality try cut bait.

At night you have a good shot at tangling with a good flathead on Murray right now if you fish live bait around brush.

Finally, if you just want to catch numbers of fish, it may be hard to beat the white perch fishery.

The best bite is up the lake because of the threadfin population, and fishing long ledges that run out to the channel are good places to look.

Twenty-25 feet is a good range to target, and they may come up to 15 feet. Minnows, jigging spoons and even strips of fish belly meat will catch perch, with the best bite early and late.

West Columbia inviting for summer activities

The Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto arrived at what is now the Congaree River in West Columbia on April 21, 1540.

He described the site as alive with the activity of the Native American tribes that inhabited the area.

As summer 2017 progresses, West Columbia river-users are filled with the same excitement of the ages, rising from all of the opportunities available, as the weather beckons them outside.

While there is considerable walking traffic along West Columbia’s Riverwalk in the fall and winter months, when it warms, the people take to the waters of Congaree River.

There is no better place in the metro area to cool off.

Floating on an inflated tube, or paddling a kayak, the natural beauty of the river, in the middle of a city, is an attraction that never gets boring.

And all regular river enthusiasts know that the flow of the Congaree comes from the bottom of Lake Murray, via the dam.

Lake water at 170-feet deep is cool, even on the hottest of days. It offers a welcome refreshment as it flows down to the Gervais Street Bridge. And there is no better place to access that chilled dip than West Columbia’s Riverwalk.

And this year, the anticipation may be even higher than normal. After floods damaged the boardwalk bridge and deck near the Riverwalk Amphitheater, the lovers of the tree-lined trail were not able to pass under the Gervais Street Bridge last summer and winter. But this year, the West Columbia Public Works Department has repaired the path and there is open passage from the Moffatt Street entrance to past the Stone River meeting facility.

Although there is the ability to enjoy the river with your own tube, organized and in-

expensive trips are offered throughout the summer. Palmetto Outdoor Center, and owner Michael Mayo, have provided a tubing service with pick up and drop off for more than a decade.

Of course it’s not reasonable to think one can stay on the river all day, no matter how tempting.

West Columbia is in a great location to take advantage of some high-profile attractions that draw visitors from around the state, and even regionally.

Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Gardens The entrance to the Riverbanks Botanical Gardens is off of Mohawk Drive in West Columbia.

The Riverbanks Botanical Garden is 70 acres of vivid color, unique plants and breathtaking beauty.

The Botanical Garden also includes Waterfall Junction.

The water feature is for families and children of all ages to get outdoors and explore nature. It’s described as a threeacre wonderland in bloom with a rabbit hole, a life-size replica of a T-Rex, and giant tree houses. All under a 25-foot cascading waterfall.

EdVenture EdVenture Children’s Museum is a great family fun venue and it’s so close to West Columbia, the building is visible from a Congaree River-based canoe.

EdVenture is a not-for-profit educational institution dedicated to creating new generations of lifelong learners through museum experiences and camps. Its mission is to inspire children, youth and the adults who care about them to experience the joy of learning as individuals, as families and as a community.

the West Columbia Community. It’s housed in the gargantuan former Mount Vernon Mills building familiar to generations of West Columbia families that once worked there.

She taught children the wonders of science for 10 years.

Now, Dawn Millard is showing Lexington how good croissants can be.

“I’ve been baking and cooking since I was a little girl; about 34 years, I’d guess,” she said. Opening a restaurant, “something of my own, has been a dream of mine for a long time.”

Along with her husband, Hal, Dawn on July 5 opened MamaBear’s Bakery on Charter Oak Road, nestled in the Krafty Draft Brew Pub where they share a kitchen with the popular local pub.

The business has dreams of bigger things, but for now offers a limited selection of fresh baked goods, and homemade biscuit breakfast sandwiches, coffee and sweet iced tea via counter service.

Don’t mess with Mama Bear Dawn said she came up with the name “MamaBear’s” (one word) while reflecting on a former coworker’s comment about her demeanor – which is nurturing and protective, but also no-nonsense.

“She used to say, ‘You’re like a bulldog in a Chihuahua’s body,’” Dawn said, laughing. “I guess she meant I wasn’t someone to mess with.

“I’m small, but I’ve got a big rolling pin.”

While the establishment serves such fresh-baked goodies as cookies, cinnamon rolls, and cupcakes, Dawn’s signature items are the French traditional and chocolate croissants – pronounced krwa`sant – she bakes from scratch.

And she means “from scratch.”

“It can take two to three days to make my croissants,” she said.

“It’s a labor of love, but I have to get it right. I want people to enjoy croissants as they’re meant to be enjoyed.”

The end result is rewarding, but the process is tedious for the baker and fraught with errors.

Dawn makes the dough, cools it for a day, then creates and rolls layer after layer incorporating butter each time in a “laminating” process.

“You can pronounce everything I use in my recipes,” she said.

The Healing Angel Three guys were fishing in a lake one day, when an angel appeared in the boat.

When the three astonished men had settled down enough to speak, the first guy asked the angel humbly, “I’ve suffered from back pain ever since I took shrapnel in the Vietnam War ... Could you help me?”

Jamaican family’s game puts fun into learning how to spell N icola and O’Neil Clark have developed a children’s spelling game you might call Scrabble for kids and their parents.

The couple is marketing the game to churches, schools, parents and anyone else who works with children to help them learn to spell English words. They talked with Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bellune about their success with it in other states.

through our “Inspire Me to Learn” initiative. The initiative is about creating fun and engaging learning opportunities throughout the community. This allows us to play our part in cultivating a lifelong love of reading and learning, and shed light on cognitive challenges faced by many.

This is achieved by hosting events and using our revolutionary smart play activity games to provide wholesome entertainment for the entire family.

Q. Where did you and your

A. We are from the Caribbean — Jamaica to be exact.

We are a family business that grew up together in the community of Portmore, St. Catherine.

Our passion for education lead us to the United States where we pursued advanced degrees in business, engineering and science.

Q. Where did the idea for Roll ‘n’ Spell come from and how has it evolved?

A. As parents we want our children to succeed academically and in all areas of life.

Seeing the challenges that students face in the classroom, we decided to create an activity that would be fun and engaging for all to enjoy.

From our research, we found that when learning becomes a fun and joyful experience for children, their brains process information better. That leads to improved academic and social outcomes.

We started with the concept of color coding the letters of the alphabet based on their frequency used as the first letter of words in the English language.

We then created the board with the colored letters and the custom dice with the associated colors.

Once we had “Roll ‘n’ Spell” we moved to a card version called “Letter Deck” which gives additional elements to enhance the engagement of our games.

Today, we have evolved into a wonderful movement

students in five core areas we call RAISE: • Recalling what they have learned.

Q. How did you get your 3-year-old interested and what has it done for him?

A. When Jayden saw how much fun our 9 year old son Jahiem was having he was excited to get involved. The key thing was showing him how much fun he can have with letters and words.

Playing the games with him has increased his attention and focus. He is able to identify letters and colors independently.

From what we have learn from Dr. Judy Willis, renowned neurologist, a classroom that creates an environment that is fun and relaxing will have more students engaged in the learning process.

Q. Who are you working with to get the game into the hands of children and their families?

A. Over the last 18 months, we have meet with a number of educators and youth organization administrators at various educational conferences.

Through this, more than 1,000 individuals are using and sharing our revolutionary vocabulary games with friends and families.

Through our “Inspire Me to Learn” initiative, we have

distributed a total of 750 sets of our games to youth organizations and schools in Miami (Dade and Broward County) in Florida. This was funded by a grant from the Aetna Foundation.

We are now seeking relevant partnerships who are willing to

offer similar support so we can distribute our revolutionary vocabulary games to kids and parents in South Carolina.

The Duke Endowment Awards $275,000 to Hospital to Home Program Celebrating Cancer Survivorship On Sunday, June 11th, the Foundation hosted the inaugural Cancer Survivors Baseball Game with the Columbia Fireflies. The Duke Endowment, a grant making organization focused on nurturing children, promoting health, educating minds and enriching spirits in North and South Carolina, has awarded Lexington Medical Center Foundation $275,000 over three years to support the Hospital to Home program.

Every year, thousands of recently discharged patients are readmitted to the hospital within 30 days because they lack resources and a caregiver to help them thrive at home. They lack transportation to follow-up appointments,

are forgetful about medication schedules, cannot shop for food, and struggle with mobility that prevents activities of daily living. As a result, many times they return to the hospital.

The Hospital to Home program provides at least 20 hours of in-home, non-medical care to patients deemed high risk with chronic, comorbid diseases like heart failure, COPD, and pneumonia who may not have a solid support system. Hospital to Home is free to all participants and the goal is to reduce hospital readmissions.

The Lexington Medical Center Foundation awarded a $28,000 grant to provide Infant CPR Anytime Kits to each family who has an infant in the Special Care Nursery (SCN).

These kits provide parents with an educational model and DVD instruction to learn a

potentially lifesaving procedure prior to taking the infant home.

The goal is to educate all parents on the importance of CPR for their child, and provide peace of mind once the infant is discharged into their care.

use the dental temporary cement, first practice putting the crown onto your tooth. It only fits one way! Make sure your bite feels alright. Then, you place just a very small amount of cement in the crown, and bite the crown into place. Take a toothpick or mixing tool and lean the cement the best you can around the crown. Most people use too much cement to recement their crowns. It only takes a very thin layer of cement.

Denture adhesive works the same way. Just put a dab into the crown and “bite” it into place. Denture adhesive works very well. (Toothpaste can hold a crown in place also, but they still come off easily.)

Whatever you do…please do not use Super Glue! This can cause a lot of problems for the nerve in your tooth and is impossible to clean off! You can even use a nail file to smooth off a rough spot on your tooth or crown.

A tooth that is “knocked out” with the root and crown all in one piece is truly an immediate dental emergency.

The best thing to do is either place the tooth in some milk, or in your cheek and get to a dentist immediately. If the

tooth is re-implanted within about 45 minutes, there is a reasonable chance that the tooth will “survive.” Anything longer than 45 minutes will probably need something called a “root canal,” where the nerve in the tooth “dies.”

If you wait too long, and a blood clot forms in the site where the tooth was knocked out, then the dentist might not be able to replace the tooth at all.

Swelling in your mouth can come from a couple of places, either your gums or an infected tooth.

If it’s in the gums, flossing gently and rinsing with warm salt water is usually the best treatment. Stay away from mouthwashes. They have a lot of alcohol, and can really irritate the gums.

Swelling or pain from a toothache is totally different.

If the pain is in the tooth, often putting ice on the tooth, or hewing ice and drinking cold water will cause the infection in the tooth to “shrink” and make the tooth feel better.

However, if the swelling looks like a gumboil or a pimple on the gums, then rinsing with

warm salt water could help draw the infection out of the gum. You can even “pop” the gum boil with a small, sterilized pin to drain the infection.

Antibiotics are usually needed for these types of problems.

The last type of emergency seems to be with braces (orthodontics). A loose wire or broken bracket can really irritate your mouth. Fortunately, most drugstores carry some sort of orthodontic wax that can be used to cover a broken wire or bracket.

Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers South Carolina 5K Run & Walk Set for September 15

The fifth annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers South Carolina 5K Run & Walk is set for Friday, September 15 at 7:00 p.m. in Columbia’s Vista. Along a picturesque course spanning the Gervais Street and Blossom Street bridges at sunset, the race celebrates and appreciates first responders and military service members who serve, save and sacrifice on our behalf every day.

Lexington Medical Center is the presenting sponsor.

The race is named in honor of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter and father of five who died on September 11, 2001.

That day, Siller was off-duty and on his way to play golf. When he heard what was happening at the World Trade Center, he strapped on 60 pounds of gear and ran from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center.

He gave his life to save others. The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is committed to ensuring that Americans never forget 9/11 and that our children understand the sacrifices made by many on that day.

The route for the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers South Carolina 5K Run & Walk begins near the First Responders Historic Remembrance Memorial next to the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center on Lincoln Street. Participants will travel

down Gervais Street, across the Gervais Street Bridge, into Cayce, up the Blossom Street Bridge and back to Columbia’s Vista in the early evening.

The goal of Tunnel to Towers is to support first responders and military service members who have been catastrophically injured in the line of duty. Proceeds from the 5K will benefit the building of smart homes for quadruple and triple amputee veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s “Building for America’s Bravest” program.

So far, the Foundation has built 56 homes. Some of the proceeds will also benefit the 9/11 Memorial.

Register for South Carolina’s Tunnel to Towers 5K Walk and Run at www.t2trunsc.org. The entry fee is $30, with discounts for students, first responders and military service members. Importantly, businesses and organizations are encouraged to build a team of participants.

When participants register, they are also encouraged to start their own fundraising pages where they can accept donations online. The proceeds will go to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The race will recognize fundraising milestones with prizes.

Additionally, firefighters can compete for the Stephen G. Siller Steel Award, a piece of steel from the Twin Towers. Each fire

department with at least five firefighters running in turnout gear will be entered in the competition. The team with the fastest combined time will receive the award to display in their fire station until next year’s run.

In previous years, event participants included more than 800 Fort Jackson soldiers running in formation, South Carolina first responders, law enforcement officers, military service members from all branches of the Armed Forces, avid runners, families and teams from businesses and organizations. More than 2,000 people participated.

Participants this year will include several JROTC groups from around South Carolina.

There will be an opening ceremony at 6:30 p.m. and an after party with an awards ceremony, music, food, beverages, vendor booths and family friendly activities after the race.
