PICKS OF THE WEEK

“The Lobster” (R) Love is weird and difficult at times. But it’s even weirder in the world where David (Colin Farrell) was just dumped by his wife. In this near-future world, you have to have a soul mate in 45 days of being single, or you must decide which animal you will be turned into.

When David checks into a mandatory resort for singles, he figures he’ll become a lobster -- they have very long lives and stay fertile. Some people escape and defy this pressure for romance, but can David really escape the need for love?

Director Yorgos Lanthimos gives us his first English-language feature with a quietly funny deadpan. Yes, it’s a movie about love and loneliness, but that doesn’t mean it has to wallow in it.

“Last Days in the Desert” (PG-13) This thoughtful and beautifully shot film imagines a non-scripture dilemma with Jesus Christ near the end of his 40-day fast in the desert in which Christ (here called Yeshua and played by Ewan McGregor) meets a small family in impending crisis. The Devil (also Mc-

Gregor) pushes him and hurls doubts at Jesus, who searches for the right thing to do.

It’s a faith-based film that looks more like an art-house flick, shot with existing light and determined to take its time.

“High Strung” (PG) Young, beautiful and talented performers must band together with local artists and hiphoppers in order to save the community center/help a charity/do the right thing. It’s a stale formula, but the cliched plotline is really just an excuse to string together performances with an emotional backdrop, and that’s what “High Strung” does. Fresh from the Midwest, ballerina Ruby (played by real-life dancer Keenan Kampa) has a lot to learn and a lot to prove upon landing in NYC and enrolling at a fictional conservatory. Op-

posite her is a melancholic Brit subway-violinist Johnny (Nicholas Galitzine), who sits on the edge of deportation.

“Keanu” (R) Two-headed comedy monster Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele take their killer tag-team timing into their first featurelength film. Rell (Peel) is a softy suburban guy heartbroken after breaking up with his girlfriend, and the new owner of an impossibly adorable kitten he names Keanu. Clarence (Key) is Rell’s un-tough friend who’s in a loving marriage, but has seemingly lost all semblance of masculinity along the way. A cascade of ridiculous circumstances thrusts the duo into a kitten-rescue mission through a world of hardened (but very catfriendly) thugs.

Key and Peele (of the show, “Key & Peele”) have honed their moves through years of sketch comedy, and their stillrunning Comedy Central show puts out great material on a regular basis. The movie works best when it’s not trying to be a movie. Absurdity hijacks the gangland

plotting, and two funny guys handle it like seasoned getaway drivers.

Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) will hold a public meeting and hearing on the Application for a Mine Operating Permit (I-002106) and Draft Air Permit for the Lexington Quarry requested by Vulcan Materials Company, LLC. The proposed quarry is located in Lexington County approximately 5 miles northeast of Batesburg-Leesville, SC. Specifically the site is located just north of US Highway 1 near its junction with Old Field Rd. The public meeting will begin at 6:00 pm on August 8, 2016 in the cafeteria of Batesburg-Leesville Middle School located at 425 Shealy Road, Batesburg-Leesville, SC 29006. here are very good reasons why dentures and partials fail you—why you can’t chew comfortably and smile confidently no matter how hard you try.

Natural teeth with their roots implanted in the gum and surrounded by bone are able to exert about 250 pounds per square inch.

For normal chewing, natural teeth exert an average pressure of 45 pounds per square inch of force, ranging up to 75 pounds.

Here is an interesting bit of Civil War trivia. We have all heard the term “bite the bullet”, which originates from the brutal amputations from the War Between the States. When bullets were found around encampments where surgery was performed, the estimated force of deformation on the bullets was over 900 pounds of pressure per square inch! Truly the muscles in your chewing system can generate awesome forces!

And the teeth were made for awesome chewing forces!

With dentures, the average chewing pressure is reduced to 14 pounds per square inch and for some as little as 5 pounds per square inch. This is a 5 to 15-fold decrease in chewing effectiveness. And the longer you wear dentures the worse it gets. As you may or may not know, when a tooth is lost, the supporting bone around the tooth starts to shrink, or resorb (disappear). This loss of support initially makes the dentures very loose. Later, as the jaw bones shrink, and the denture teeth wear down, the patient has to close their jaws further in order to get “their teeth” together. This puts a tremendous amount of additional pressure on the jaw joint, and results in a “scrunched up face”, and what the dentist calls, a loss of vertical dimen-

sion (the height of your face) Some dentists try to build the denture up with extra plastic, or change the way the jaw joint works, to make the face look longer (so called “Facelift Dentures). These dentures force the jaw joint to work in a position that is not at all natural, and can cause an entire new set of problems to the denture wearer.

If you are a denture wearer, you know this tremendous loss of pressure means having to completely change your eating habits.

Your dentures can shift from side to side by an average of a half inch during chewing.

Struggling with being overweight or underweight because you either eat soft foods, which are inevitably high in carbohydrates and calories, or you eat very little because it’s just too painful. We all know the kinds of foods we should eat, crisp vegetables, fruits, grains and lean proteins.

With dentures, or any other compromised eating, we are stuck with overly processed foods that are easy to digest, but not healthy to eat.

Not being able to enjoy the taste, temperature and texture of your food, requiring you to add additional salt and spices?

Maybe it is the denture that is covering up your taste buds. Did you know that most of the taste buds in your mouth are on the roof of your mouth?

Plastic in the dentures that insulates the tissue re-

Furry Friends SUMMER FUN

You’ve remembered your sunscreen, life jacket, insect repellent, etc for you; but did you remember to bring some along for your pet? As you spend more time outside whether in your yard or at the beach or lake, chances are you pet is with you. The things you worry about can also be a potential problem for your pet. Fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, wasp, yellow jackets are no fun for your pet. In our area your pet should be on a heartworm preventative year round. Ticks and mosquitoes can certainly be out even in winter in our area. If you are traveling know that ticks and mosquitoes are found in all 50 states. There are many flea and tick control medications available whether in topical or tablet form. The same is true of heartworm preventatives. One topical parasiticide, called Vectra 3D, can repel mosquitoes

giving an additional layer of protection. Your veterinarian can best advise you what to use with your pet, be they a cat or dog.

In the case of wasp, yellow jackets, and bees, there is no repellant. Watch for them just as you would for yourself.

Unfortunately our pets have a tendency to put their noses where the insects like to reside be it a ground nest or a flower. If your pet is stung, try and find the stinger if possible.

If you do find the stinger, don’t try and pull it out as you could squeeze more venom into your pet. It is better to try and brush it out of the skin with a fingernail, credit card, of blunted knife. You can apply a cold washcloth or paste of baking soda and water to the area. If you note swelling especially of the face or mouth, take your dog to your veterinarian.

Snakes present a different challenge as the best thing is to avoid them. If your pet is bitten, this is an emergency; and you

need to get your pet to your veterinarian. We always try to have at least a couple of bottles of antivenin on hand at our hospital. The bite of a rattlesnake, copperhead, or water moccasin can cause pronounced pain, swelling, loss of skin and muscle, and even death.

If your dog likes to swim with you or go out on the boat, he or she should have a personal floatation device. Ideally you would like one with a handle in case you need to pick your dog out of the water.

train your dog how to get out of the pool or onto the boat. We think all dogs know how to do the dog paddle, but this isn’t true. They can panic just like us if they fall into the water. Ideally you should rinse your dog off after swimming in the pool, lake, or ocean. Chlorine and salt can be drying to the skin. Also be sure your dog dries off thoroughly, or he or she can develop an odor. Placing a few drops of swimmers ear in your pet’s ears after swimming can help prevent infection.

A hot sun can cause

sunburn or can overheat your dog. Flat nosed breeds like Boston Terriers, bulldogs, shihtzu, etc are more prone to heat stress. An older dog may also be more sensitive to the heat. Never leave your dog in the car and always provide shade and water when outdoors. Dogs at the greatest risk for sunburn are those that have been shaved, have a pale skin pigment, or light colored nose. The same is true of white cats. Doogles actually makes protective eye wear for dogs with a UV coating on the lenses. There are canine rash-guard shirts and visors with UPF 50 protection. The draw back with the shirts is they don’t always cover the belly. There are specific sun screens for dogs and cats and most pet stores will carry them.

Doggles, Nutrivet, and Vet’s Best all make sunscreens for pets that do not contain zinc oxide.

You want to avoid zinc oxide in pets as it is toxic

to pets. If you use a human sunscreen on your pet, make sure it does not contain zinc oxide.

You should probably stay with baby sunscreen or sunscreens for sensitive skin. Sunscreen should be applied to the nose, ears, and belly and in a shaved dog apply all over. You should apply the sunscreen every 4 to 6 hours. Another recommendation is to limit sun exposure for your pet between 10 am and 2 pm.

If you are grilling out be careful that your pet doesn’t steal anything or get into the garbage after the feast. Corncobs are very appealing to our pets, but unfortunately they tend to get stuck in the intestines causing serious if not fatal blockages. Also any wooden skewers, tinfoil, or anything that might have had meat on it is very tempting to your pet. Avoid the urge to share your food with your pet as the higher fat content could also trigger an upset stomach or even worse, pancreatitis.

Have appropriate treats if you want to share.

Summer is a fun time for us and for our pets.

STAY Chapin/Newberry headed to state tournament

Some faces are different.

The path back to the American Legion state tournament took slightly longer than last season.

Yet remaining the team to beat in tournament play Saturday at Riley Park in Sumter, the one constant is head coach Daniel Gregory.

Defending national champion Chapin/Newberry has a 51-6 record in two seasons under the new Gaffney High School head baseball coach.

Some Major League and NCAA coaches would have no problem gaining legendary status with that record.

But humble Gregory gives the honor to his players. He points to veterans like outfielder Blake Smith (Dutch Fork), third baseman Ryan Stoudenmire, shortshop Payton Spangler, pitcher Tristan

Smaltz and newcomers like first baseman Tyler White and Jordan O’Cain (both of Chapin) for the team’s success.

He also credits having a “loose atmosphere” which has allowed the players to relax during this repeat run.

Unlike last season when Chapin/Newberry played just one series and three games to reach the state tournament, it went four games with Hartsville and played a second series with Camden that ended in a 3-game sweep.

Smith and Stoudenmire have continued to provide the leadership and offensive output. Smith’s versatility to go from catcher to the outfield was vital with a lateseason injury to Colin Santiago.

The pitching staff includes University of South Carolina commit Corey Stone and lefthander Kyle McClary (Dutch Fork).

When asked about additional pressure compared to last year, Gregory said it was a mixed bag.

“The pressure is there and it’s not there,” he said. “It’s not there because we’ve been there and done it.

Use imagination to repurpose your antique porcelain

L

ovely old pieces of porcelain often times find themselves on display in china cabinets and display cases. As we rush from day to day it may seem impractical to use pieces that seem so fragile. Many sets from years ago have dishes that may look unfamiliar - some of the more uncommon would be: BONE DISHES Small, crescent shaped pieces that sit against the curved edge of a larger plate. Used for bones and other inedible bits.

BUTTER PATS Small, circular plates looking like miniatures of a dinner plate. Used at the head of the dinner plate for decorative pats of butter.

SALT CELLARS Tiny bowls used with an equally tiny spoon for dispensing salt on one’s meal.

NUT DISHES Oval form bowls that hold about half a handful of nuts. Used for a “soup and nuts” course which was popular several centuries ago.

Let these seemingly impractical pieces inspire your imagination. Adaptively, re-use pieces to bring the past into the present. Bone dishes are beautiful when used for a small serving of ice cream or sorbet.

Butter pats and salt cellars are perfect for their original use but also for a single, special truffle, a special, intense sauce, for capers or olives.

Nut dishes are useful for so many things. Their small size and compact nature makes them ideal for sauces, melted butter or single servings of something intense and rich.

Flowers arranged in antique porcelain water pitchers take on a warm dimension not found when a traditional vase is used.

Antique porcelain is also a great way to get inspiration for a special meal. Think of the myriad of things you can prepare when the past and present are combined.

FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY:

Striper: Good. Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that the best fish are being caught on down-lines fished in 55-70 feet of water in the lower lake. The free-line bite has declined and is mainly yielding smaller fish now.

Crappie: Good. Captain Brad reports that good numbers of crappie are still being caught over brush in 18-25 feet of water and around deeper docks. Both minnows and jigs will catch fish.

Catfish: Good. Captain Chris Simpson (864-9922352) reports that fan-casting a variety of baits – including

dip baits and cut herring – in 10-25 feet of water has been productive for channel catfish.

Bass: Fair to good. Captain Doug Lown reports that largemouth can be found from shallow to mid-depth to deep water. The fishing has been far better early and late. Buzzbaits fished around the banks when there is some shade will catch fish, and plastic worms fished off points have also been working.

Let’s say your keyboard is broken. Did you throw it against the wall in a fit of rage? You can’t get to the store. What do you do?

Easy, your computer has a virtual keyboard installed just in case you need it.

With Windows 8, just do a quick search for “keyboard.”

Windows 7 and earlier, click on the “windows” key and search for keyboard. It is a pain to use but will work in a pinch.

What if your mouse goes out? Some quick keyboard shortcuts can cut back mouse

use.

Ctrl+A is a quick shortcut to select all on the page.

Ctrl+C will copy what you have selected.

Ctrl+V will paste what you’ve copied.

Ctrl+P will bring up a print screen.

There are so many shortcuts. Visit the Chronicle website page and I’ll make sure to post a longer list there. Print it and keep it for a rainy day.

How a Clerical Error Led To a Medical Breakthrough

Quack. Charlatan. Crazy.

Those insults and worse were hurled over the centuries at doctors who defied conventional medical wisdom. Any physician bold enough to buck the Medical Establishment could expect to feel its fury.

Yet sometimes those same “quacks” were responsible for major scientific advances.

Doctor John Sappington was one of them. And because of a misunderstood order, he brought healing to thousands of ailing Americans, many of whom otherwise would have died.

Here’s how it happened.

People were pushing west in the decades before the Civil War, advancing the country’s border in that direction as settlements, then towns, and then new states began appearing. Their paths often followed rivers. In the days before railroads, waterways were like today’s Interstate highways, carrying pioneers and commerce … and something deadly.

Malaria. The word struck terror in the hearts of antebellum Americans. It was a life-threatening blood disease for which there was no treatment. It produced fever, chills and sweats so severe, sufferers begged death to come and bring relief. And quite a few patients did die.

Nobody knew it in the early 1800s, but a simple animal or insect bite (often a mosquito) caused the illness.

And once malaria arrived in summertime it spread like wildfire from patient to patient and town to town, dying out only with fall’s frost.

John Sappington was intrigued by the disease and wanted to find a way to treat it. Born in Maryland, he learned medicine from his physician father, then practiced in Tennessee. Eager to put down roots in an unsettled land, he moved his young family across the Mississippi River in 1819, set-

tling in the Missouri Territory hamlet of Arrow Rock.

Situated on the banks of the busy Missouri River, it turned out to be Ground Zero for annual malaria outbreaks, the perfect place to study the disease.

“Nobody can treat malaria,” the Medical Establishment scoffed. “You’re a fool.

Stop wasting your time.”

But Sappington didn’t stop. He devoured every bit of information he could find about the illness. And something he read in a medical journal particularly caught his eye.

People in Peru used ground cinchona tree bark to fight the disease. Sappington got his hands on some and experimented. Sure enough, it helped patients

recover. But the bark’s medicinal quality varied from sample to sample, making it extremely difficult to get the right dosage.

Something else popped up in another article a few years later. Researchers in France had discovered how to extract quinine from cinchona bark, and a Philadelphia chemist had just opened a factory to produce it. This was the break Sappington had been waiting for. With pure quinine, he could manufacture reliable pills.

The timing was perfect, because Sappington’s son happened to be heading east just then to attend school.

Sappington asked him to bring back 100 ounces of quinine with him when the academic year ended the

next spring.

And the son did. But somewhere along the line, someone made a big mistake. The boy didn’t bring 100 ounces as requested; he showed up with 100 pounds of quinine!

Once the initial shock wore off, Sappington jumped into action. With so much quinine on his hands, he needed all the help he could get. So his wife, kids and the household servants all pitched in to make and box Dr. Sappington’s Anti-Fever Pills. They sold for $1 per dozen … pricey for the 1840s, but still within reach of most families that needed them.

And they worked. People told their family and friends about the new medicine. Demand exploded. With a more than ample quinine supply on hand, Sappington hired salesmen who pedaled his pills up and down the Mississippi River, in the bayous and swamps of the Deep South and in the humid farmland straddling the Ohio River. When wagon trains rolled west from embarkation points in Missouri, Dr. Sappington’s Anti-Fever Pills went with them.

Sappington became very rich as result. In ten years, he had amassed $1 million in sales … about $30 million in today’s dollars. Yet it didn’t change his lifestyle; the Sappingtons still lived in the simple log cabin they built when they arrived in Missouri decades earlier.

Then Dr. Sappington did something astonishing. He wrote a book called “Theory and Treatment of Fevers” (the first medical book ever

Thousands of people did, too, drying up the market for Sappington’s product. But the good doctor didn’t mind ... he had provided for his family, he said, now it was time to share with others.

That generosity was again displayed shortly before his death in 1856 when he created the Sappington School Fund to educate needy students. Incredibly, it’s still in existence 160 years later as a college scholarship program.

Sappington was actively involved in politics. Two sonsin-law were Missouri governors before the Civil War. Grandson John Sappington Marmaduke was a Confederate general and also served as governor in the 1880s.

There are no impressive monuments to Sappington today. His name doesn’t rank with medical heroes such as Jonas Salk or Alexander Fleming, but it deserves to.

His tiny brick medical office is a museum in Arrow Rock, but it is his only memorial.

It’s a pity Americans don’t remember the man who found the treatment scoffers said was an impossibility, who made sure that treatment helped as many people as possible, and who wound up giving away much of the money he made to those who needed a helping hand.

There’s no better way to fulfill the words of the famous oath every doctor takes, “May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling ...”
