PICKS OF THE WEEK The Boss Baby (PG) — Little

Timmy (voiced by Miles Bakshi) is the center of his parents’ world.

Then one day a baby brother shows up — in a taxi, wearing a business suit, carrying a briefcase — leaving Timmy with a strong case of second thoughts and sibling rivalry. His mission? Get rid of the interloper.

But the obnoxious Boss Baby has a mission of his own: Using their parents’ connections at Puppy Co., he must rid the world of new “forever” puppies to restore babies’ rightful place at the top of the adorability matrix and secure his legacy in the executive order of Baby Corp.

Alex Baldwin owns it all in the role of Boss Baby, and the giggle-and-guffaw-filled storyline will delight children of all ages.

Ghost in the Shell (PG-13) — In the near-future world of “Ghost in the Shell,” cyberenhancements are the norm, but this experimentation is taken to the ultimate in Major (Scarlett Johansson), a recovered human brain given a new lease on life by being paired with a uniquely designed superhuman body.

Feelings of disconnection and troubling half-memories are written off by her creator as “glitches.” Enter Kuze (Michael Carmen), a terrorist and threat who enlightens Major about their shared past.

Existential exploration puts Major on the outside of her network, and she must fight to answer whether her life was saved or stolen.

Director Rupert Sanders’ breathtaking fight sequences and sleek, ultramodern cityscapes make this film a treat to watch, but there will be some debate over how deeply he glosses over the morality of its manga inspiration.

Every lady really and truly needed her very own bosom bottle

his faceted glass cylinder was crafted of hand blown, tinted glass. It was made in America near 1870 and likely by the Libby Glass Company.

The hand-cut facets that flank each side keep the cylinder from rolling. It is easy to securely place it on a flat surface, such as a dressing table, with no fear of it rolling off and breaking. It was so be filled with smelling salts, rose oil, or even vanilla.

The cap is made of spun silver. This cap is a marvel in and of itself as it is crafted by a skilled silversmith spinning a single silver wire into the dimensional wonder we see here.

The silver is also American. This is indicated by the alloy of the metal stamped on the cap 925/1000; the standard for American sterling. A bottle such as this was used nearly every day and certainly any time a female would venture out from her home.

As many of you know, as was mentioned in last week’s article on the posy holder, sanitation was in short supply before the turn of the century. A well-appointed lady of the time

To educate myself and those around me, I thought, how do I keep her safe with all this technology around?

Here is the biggest tip I can give you parents: Learn how to use it yourself.

All those applications your kids are using, figure it out yourself as well. That way, you learn the dangers.

Just remember that popular applications like Facebook, Instagram, Vine, SnapChat, Pinterest, Musically, and Facetime are all things that you just need to keep a watch on.

I don’t advocate for a child to have these. But make sure to keep up with the new technology so you know how to keep them safe.

Bottles such as these were often jeweled, made by famous makers, and considered an important part of a ladies toilette. This particular example would have remained cool to the touch as its crystal confines offered a chilling effect in warm climates.

The silver cap is beautiful, but also provided an antimicrobial element which added even more allure to its beauty.

Bottles such as these are very collectible today. They are not large, small enough to implement as was described above. They are nearly always misidentified as perfume bottles but the shape and form tell us otherwise.

But a few tricks may help, especially for those of you who already have ipads at home.

Use the restrictions application that comes pre-installed on all ipads.

Open the settings app and click on General and then Restrictions.

Then hit Enable Restrictions at the top. You’ll be asked for a four-digit

passcode. Create your pass code.

Now you can setup Restrictions, like installing or uninstalling applications, disable purchases and block websites.

If your child is younger, you may want to restrict them to just one application. Then setup Guided Access under Settings, General Accessibility.

Applications What can your child get into with applications?

For all applications, there should be an age rating in the app store so you can make a decision if your child is old enough.

Also you can use CommonSenseMedia.org to check on applications, games, movies, books and websites. It will show you ratings for age and appropriateness.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 357.86 (full pool is 360.00), and temperatures are in the mid80s. Clarity is good.

Lake Murray bass are firmly in summer mode, and veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that there isn't a lot of change in the overall pattern since the beginning of the month.

Early, there is a shallow bite around the banks, and after that you need to look around deeper channel points. Doug notes that if we get some rain and cloudy weather it can be a good time to look around the bank later into the day, particularly since deeper fish don't bite as well when it is cloudy. When it is hot and sunny, you pretty much need to concentrate offshore outside of a small window first thing.

Tournament angler Andy

Wicker of Pomaria has also spent time on Murray recently, and he notes that it's not taking a lot of weight to win tournaments.

In addition to finding some fish shallow early (before 8 a.m.) on topwaters like a buzzbait, frog or Pop-R, he has also found some schooling fish out over deeper water. Most of these fish seem to be in the 2 to 2½ pound

range. They have also caught them in the same areas on the bottom around brush.

On the striped bass front, Captain Brad Taylor (803331-1354) reports that the best action has been coming on down-lined herring fished in 40-60 feet of water.

Pretty much all of the fish are out on the main lake moving towards the lower pool, and there have even been some reports of fish caught in

80 feet along the dam.

Crappie fishing has been really good recently, and Brad reports that he is catching fish around brush in 15-20 feet of water at the mouths of major creeks on the upper part of the lake.

The fish have been 6-12 feet down, and they will pretty much only bite toughies that are small as you can get.

In catfish news, Captain William Attaway (803-924-0857) reports that the spawn is winding down as in most of the area lakes.

That means that most of the fish are headed deeper, although they will come into shallower water to feed at night. Thirty feet is a good depth range to target during the day, while at night 1525 feet is a good range.

Fish will be found off long points and humps, and fish-

ing the deeper side of channel buoys on the lake is a good bet.

For numbers of fish dip baits are hard to beat, while for a little better quality try cut bait.

At night you have a good shot at tangling with a good flathead on Murray right now if you fish live bait around brush.

Finally, if you just want to catch numbers of fish, it may be hard to beat the white perch fishery.

The best bite is up the lake because of the threadfin population, and fishing long ledges that run out to the channel are good places to look.

Twenty-25 feet is a good range to target, and they may come up to 15 feet.

Minnows, jigging spoons and even strips of fish belly meat will catch perch, with the best bite early and late.

Add a little POP to your popcorn

On a recent movie date night with my husband, I spent a small fortune on a bag of popcorn at the snack bar.

I must admit, although it hurt my wallet, I was able to take comfort in the fact that plain popcorn is actually a good snack choice — especially for diabetics, as it does not impact blood-sugar levels.

In fact, one serving of popcorn (about 3 cups) can provide about 70% of our recommended daily intake of whole grain and energy-producing complex carbohydrates.

Popcorn contains no cholesterol, is virtually fat-free (only 0.1 g per cup) and contains only 100 to 150 calories in a serving of five popped cups.

Popcorn also contains a number of essential vitamins, including iron, folate, niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, pantothenic acid and vitamins B6, A, E and K, with lesser amounts of calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. It also contains fiber, providing roughage the body needs in the daily diet.

Air-popped popcorn has only 30 calories per cup; oilpopped popcorn has only 35 calories per cup. When lightly buttered, popcorn contains about 80 calories per cup.

Here are some facts about popcorn you should know: 1) There has never been, nor is there currently, any genetically modified organism (GMO) popcorn or popcorn seed for sale in the U.S. or international markets.

2) Microwave popcorn does not contain perflourooctanoic acid. PFOA is sometimes used in grease-resistant coatings for paper, such as fast-food wrappers, candy wrappers and pizza box liners. The greaseresistant coating in the major-

ity of microwave popping bags is not produced with PFOA. As always, read the label.

3) You should never use a paper bag to make microwave popcorn. Plain and recycled papers often are made from unknown materials that could catch fire or interfere with microwave cooking technology.

Use pre-packaged microwave popcorn or microwavesafe popcorn poppers, or the traditional stovetop method, or an electric popcorn popper.

Here are my suggestions to put some flavorful POP into your plain popcorn:

VEGGIE POPCORN Pulse 2 cups each mixed veggie chips and dehydrated snap peas in a food processor until powdery; toss with 8 cups hot popcorn and 2 cups each veggie chips and dehydrated snap peas.

CHEESY POPCORN Toss 16 cups hot popcorn with 2 cups shredded cheddar, 1 cup grated parmesan and ½ cup grated pecorino; spread on baking sheets. Bake at 350 F until the cheddar melts, about 3 minutes.

PEPPERONI PIZZA POPCORN Cook 1 cup chopped pepperoni in 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large pot until crisp; drain on paper towels, reserving the drippings. Pop ¾ cup popcorn kernels in the drippings; toss with the pepperoni, 1 cup shredded mozzarella, ½ cup grated parmesan, 2 tablespoons olive oil and 1 teaspoon each granulated garlic and dried oregano.

SPICY PORK-RIND POPCORN Heat ¼ cup vegetable oil with 1 ½ tablespoons chili

powder, 2 teaspoons grated lime zest and ½ teaspoon cayenne in a skillet over medium heat, 2 minutes; drizzle over 16 cups hot popcorn. Toss with 2 cups pork rinds and 1 tablespoon lime juice.

SRIRACHA LIME POPCORN Whisk 5 tablespoons melted butter with ¼ cup Sriracha, 1 ½ teaspoons grated lime zest and 1 tablespoon lime juice; drizzle over 16 cups hot popcorn and toss.

PEANUT BUTTER POPCORN Heat 1 cup honey or agave syrup and ¾ cup sugar substitute over medium heat, stirring, until dissolved and wellcombined, about 5 minutes.

Stir in 1 cup peanut butter and 1 teaspoon each vanilla extract and kosher salt until smooth; pour over 16 cups hot popcorn and add 2 cups peanuts, if desired, and toss.

Spread on baking sheets and let cool.

SZECHAUAN CHILE POPCORN Heat 1 cup each peanuts and dried arbol chiles, ½ cup each peanut oil, sesame seeds and Szechuan peppercorns, and 4 teaspoons each sugar and kosher salt in a large skillet over medium heat until the nuts and chiles are toasted, 4 minutes; pour over 16 cups hot popcorn. Toss with 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil.

SALT AND VINEGAR POPCORN Combine ¼ cup malt vinegar and 2 teaspoons kosher salt in a small spray bottle; shake to dissolve the salt. Spray over 16 cups hot popcorn.

Lexington County resident becomes historian for restored B-25 bomber

Robert Smith did not aim to be a famed B-25 bomber's historian.

He was just working on an Explorer Scout Badge.

But his long acquaintance with the aircraft that ditched in Lake Greenwood on D-Day pressed him into service. He is a keeper of the lore.

Smith will be on hand Thursday, July 27, for Historic Columbia’s 6-8 p.m. sneak peek at the newlyrestored circa 1929 CurtissWright Hangar at HamiltonOwens Airport where he and other Explorers worked on the B-25 decades ago.

The plane has been invited to provide the backdrop for the restored hangar’s first public look.

In the mid-1980s, Smith was a member of Explorer Post 15, a Boy Scouts of America career exploration program.

He worked on the plane over the months after its 1983 recovery from Lake Greenwood.

That was 39 years after a routine training mission from Greenville Army Air Base went awry.

The aircraft was part of the fleet sent to Columbia Army Air Base early in World War II. “Larry Yon was our post advisor and Les Beard was our assistant post advisor,” Smith recalled.

“We started with the in-

side, removing all the tubing and wiring to make the plane lighter, anticipating one day it would go into a static display.”

An Airport High graduate and now logistics coordinator for the S.C. State Guard, Smith remembers Explorers found some interesting things in the plane during its early restoration.

“A thermos still had coffee swishing around in it.

There were a couple of the original headsets the crew used to communicate air to ground.”

As to the landing gear, Smith said one of the tires still had air.

“We did a lot of stripping and sanding and removed corrosion and rust from an original propeller recovered near the spot where the plane went down.”

He said the volunteer workers also discovered one of the fans that had helped with circulation inside the plane.

The troop built two stands to support the wings while work continued on other parts of the plane.

“Probably most exciting to us was finding .50-caliber machine guns with ammo.”

At that time president of the Explorer post, Smith recalled the experience was an ideal pathway to a dream career.

“Anything to do with airplanes” was his goal, he said.

“To realize we have the technology to transport us through the air was, still is,

just amazing to me.”

On a personalized tour of the tower, Explorers got to see how air traffic controllers worked.

“We also had a field trip to McEntire AFB to see the (then new, 1984-85) Black Hawk helicopters the S.C. Air National Guard (SCANG) had.”

He stayed involved until the post disbanded.

Smith also had an opportunity to work at the airport as an intern.

He learned a number of jobs, from working the fuel desk to the flight line.

But that was about as close as he came to an aviation career.

“An accident sidelined me. I would not have been able to qualify for a pilot’s license, so I went into other lines of work.”

His fascination with aviation has never waned.

Now Smith is reliving memories as a member of the S.C. Historic Aviation Foundation (SCHAF,) steward of the plane he knows so well.

“Work had been keeping me busy. I had not been getting over to the hangar much.

"When I went recently, I was impressed by how far volunteers have come in restoring the plane’s crew compartment and nose section. They said I could climb all the way through it, like I did all those years ago.

"I remembered what a tight squeeze it was then and said, ‘I’ve done that.’”

Manos, Ledell chosen as Lexington Chronicle Co-Male Athletes of the Year Football players Hank Manos of Chapin and D.J. Ledell of River Bluff will enroll at the Palmetto State’s Big Two Division I schools.

In their primary sports, the duo earned the 2016-17 Lexington County Chronicle Male Co-Athletes of the Year honors.

No S.C. High School League wrestler was as dominant at 285 pounds as Manos.

A year after finishing third in the state in Class 3A, the 6-5, 280-pound rising senior was undefeated as a junior, posting a 40-0 record in winning the Class 4A title in his weight class.

Manos led the Eagles to the Class 4A Lower State team title and state runnerup finish.

Manos’ prowess on the mat helped earn him a University of South Carolina scholarship. According to head wrestling coach Ken Wilson, scouts saw the Eagles’ center doing drill movements in the gym and made a verbal offer the next day.

"He just works hard and is dedicated,” Wilson said.

Wilson called Manos a "lead by example” person who’s always at practice helping his teammates. Despite plans to graduate in January to enroll early at South Carolina, Manos is committed to wrestling for Chapin through December.

Last weekend, Manos was victorious at the Virginia

Tech Tony Robie Wrestling Camp in Blacksburg, Va. In the five years of River Bluff High, Desmond Ledell Jr. set the standard in track and field.

A wide receiver in football, the Clemson University signee finished his career with five gold medals. Four were unprecedented in three classifications in the triple jump.

Ledell also set a school record and career best 50 feet, six inch long jump at the New Balance Nationals in June.

His performances on the track earned Ledell the S.C. Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year award and selection to the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Boys Track and Field Team.

"D.J. has always been that kid who knew what he wanted out of sports and life,” River Bluff Track Coach Racheed Gause said. "He's enjoyed every minute of the work he's put in. Never in my life have I seen a kid who would want to work out twice a day, no matter the time. D.J. understood what it took to be the best and, with my help, he listened

and followed my lead.

"When you get an athlete of his caliber, sometimes the real difficulty is getting him to understand the mentality, sacrifice and dedication it takes be elite and maximize your output.

“Once D.J. understood and wanted to be the best he could be at this level, I saw a switch turn on and he took off.”

"After a disappointing season last year, coach Gause and I discussed ways of getting back to where I left off my 10th grade year,” Ledell said.

"So I started getting feedback from other jumper coaches, doing different drills to perfect my technique and working extra hard in the weight room.

"The jumps is a specialty for me because I’ve always been able to jump with a lot of power ever since I was young and I love the competition in the event.”

SUMMARY: The RBS has made a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) with respect to a request for possible financing assistance to Odyssey Solar, LLC for the construction of the Odyssey Solar project in Lexington County, SC. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The proposed project consists of an 8.16 megawatt (MW) solar facility located on approximately 82.5 acres located on the south side of Old Charleston Road, approximately 1,200 feet east of its intersection with Harvey Berry Road in Pelion, SC. Alternatives considered by RBS and Odyssey Solar, LLC include: No action and proposed alternative. The alternatives are discussed in the Odyssey Solar EA. The RBS has reviewed and approved the EA for the proposed project.

The availability of the EA for public review was announced via notice in the following newspaper(s): The Lexington County Chronicle and Dispatch-News on June 8, 2017 and June 15, 2017. A 14-day comment period was announced in the newspaper notice(s). The EA was also available for public review at the USDA Rural Development office and website as well as Odyssey Solar, LLC offices.

There was one (1) set of comments provided and these comments were addressed. No other comments were received during the 14 day comment period.

Based on its EA, commitments made by RBS, and public comments received, RBS has concluded that the project would have no significant impact (or no impacts) to water quality, wetlands, floodplains, land use, aesthetics, transportation, or human health and safety.

The proposed project will have no adverse effect on resources listed or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The Agency has also concluded that the proposed project is not likely to affect federally listed threatened and endangered species or designated critical habitat thereof. The proposed project would not disproportionately affect minority and/or low-income populations.

No other potential significant impacts resulting from the proposed project have been identified.

Therefore, RBS has determined that this FONSI fulfills its obligations under the National Environmental Policy Act, as amended (42 U.S.C. 4321 et seq.), the Council on Environmental Quality Regulations (40 CFR §§ 1500-1508), and USDA Rural Development’s Environmental Policies and Procedures (7 CFR Part 1970) for its action related to the project.

RBS is satisfied that the environmental impacts of the proposed project have been adequately addressed. RBS’s federal action would not result in significant impacts to the quality of the human environment, and as such it will not prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for its action related to the proposed project.

It’s a Dog’s Life Piercing questions The students in my thirdgrade class were bombarding me with questions about my newly pierced ears.

“Does the hole go all the way through?”

“Yes.” “Did it hurt?”

“Just a little.”

“Did they stick a needle through your ears?”

“No, they used a special gun.”

Silence followed, and then one solemn voice called out, “How far away did they stand?”

Train encounter This fellow who had spent his whole life away from civilization went to visit a friend.

He’d never seen a train or the tracks they run on.

While standing in the middle of the railroad tracks one day, he heard a screeching train whistle behind him, but not knowing what it was, he was hit — but only a glancing blow — and was thrown to the side of the tracks with some minor internal injuries, a few broken bones, and some bruises.

After weeks in the hospital recovering, he was back at his friend’s house attending a party one evening.

While in the kitchen, he suddenly heard a tea kettle

whistling. He ran and grabbed a baseball bat from the nearby closet and proceeded to batter and bash the tea kettle into an unrecognizable lump of metal.

His friend, hearing the commotion, rushed into the kitchen, saw what had happened and asked the man, “Why did you ruin my good tea kettle?”

Tyndall reaches 20 years as W. Cola police chief

Dennis Tyndall is marking his twentieth year as West Columbia Police Chief.

With two decades behind him, Tyndall said he is very pleased with his career choice.

In that time, there have been lots of good times. And Tyndall said he has also experienced some trying episodes.

From triple-murders to officers on his force who have been shot.

He said despite the risks and the stress, a special type of person enlists to be a police officer.

“Our goal is to hire highquality people,” said Tyndall.

“They have to be professional, but also courteous and passionate about their job. We hire a personality type and we train them to be good officers.”

Because West Columbia is in the middle of a large urban area, with several municipalities surrounding it, there is competition for the employment of new recruits.

But Tyndall said he has learned to show potential officers the best of his department.

“We’re a family here,” said Tyndall. “We all get along well. We work together as a team.”

Patrolman Will Branham joined the WCPD in the summer of 2016.

“West Columbia is smaller,” said Branham. “I like that. You get to know everyone and everyone knows you. You know the chief. It has a good feel to it and everybody is close.”

Tyndall said his relationships with his officers are special. He said three times in his two decades as chief he has had officers hit by gunfire. He recounted a bank robbery in which two officers were shot and pinned down.

“When you hear that an officer has been hit, you just get to them as fast as you can,” said Tyndall. He said it is an emotional challenge.

In addition to molding the careers of dozens, Tyndall has done a lot to make sure his department of 65 has as much modern equipment and technology as possible.

The WCPD has received about 30 body cameras that it is training officers with now.

Tyndall also applied for a federal grant to buy electronic license plate readers.

Tyndall said the readers put West Columbia Police ahead of many other larger departments in the apprehension of stolen cars, suspended tags and wanted persons.

Having had it with the two of them, God’s punishment was that Adam and Eve

should have children of their own. Thus the pattern was set and it has never changed.

But there is reassurance in the story.

If you have persistently and lovingly tried to give children wisdom and they haven’t taken it, don’t be hard on yourself.

If God had trouble aising children, what makes you think it would be a piece of cake for you?

Finding it Billy was excited about his first day at school. So excited in fact, that only a few minutes after class started, he realized that he desperately needed to go to the bathroom.

So Billy raised his hand politely to ask if he could be excused.

Of course the teacher said yes, but asked Billy to be quick.

Five minutes later, Billy returned, looking more desperate and embarrassed.

“I can’t find it”, he admitted.

The teacher sat Billy down and drew him a little diagram to where he should go and asked him if he will be able to find it now.

Billy looked at the diagram, said “yes” and went on his way.

A short while later he returned to the class room and said to the teacher “I still can’t find it”.

Frustrated, the teacher asked

“We hold fundraisers to pay for training and equipment for our officers,” said Tyndall. He said the WCPOF holds a 5K race in the spring and a golf tournament in October to generate funds.

Mike Bollinger, City of West Columbia Public Works Department employee has won the American Public Works Association (APWA) 33rd Annual State Championship Backhoe Rodeo Competition. He took the title in Charleston on July 11.

A Backhoe Rodeo Competition is operators competing to demonstrate accuracy and

precision skills with the use of a backhoe.

Bollinger competed against eight other backhoe operators from around the state.

“We are extremely proud to have a person with Mr. Bollinger’s talent as a member of our city staff to serve West Columbia,” said West Columbia Mayor Bobby Horton after the win was announced.

Bollinger will compete on July 21 in Rock Hill for the South Carolina versus North Carolina Border War Competition.

Long before bath salts and conditioners, we made our own lye soap

Once I asked my 90-year-old grandmother how she washed her hair when she was young.

She gave me a look like that was the dumbest question in the world.

“Lye soap,” she said.

I was initially horrified as I had heard homemade lye soap was caustic and horrible for skin and hair.

The history of soap goes back to antiquity.

In an excavation of Babylon, a clay cylinder from around 2800 BC was found with inscriptions showing fats were boiled with ashes to make soap.

Archeological evidence in Israel reveals that ancient Israelites made soap from wood or vegetable ashes and oil.

The ancient inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Babylon and Egypt bathed regularly, with soap made from animal fat, ashes and water.

Instead of water, Romans mixed urine, animal fat and ashes for their soap.

Soaphistory.net reports the first references to soaps were for medicine and cleaning cooking utensils and cloth.

Clean clothes may have been more important than personal hygiene.

Bathing habits in the middle ages took a smelly turn for the worse.

The Roman Catholic Church decided that it was absolutely sinful to get in one’s birthday suit for any reason, even for bathing.

The medical community decided that taking warm bathes opened the pores of the skin so that diseases would come into the body

In 1884, a farmer pours water into the ash barrel to make lye while

his wife boils a kettle of fat. Combining lye and fat produces soft

and make one sick.

You might even die.

Personal hygiene was reduced to washing hands, rinsing mouths and parts of the face.

Washing the whole face was thought to be dangerous and could weaken the eyesight.

The upper classes of the Middle Ages, to preserve their health, decided to balance their health and hygiene by bathing a few times a year.

A Russian Ambassador who visited King Louis XIV wrote that the king

“stunk like a wild animal.”

While King Louis didn’t like bathing, he apparently loved his internal baths. He was reported to have over 2,000 enemas in his lifetime.

Queen Isabel I of Spain confessed that she had bathed only twice, when she was born and when she got married.

To cover body odor, the wealthy rubbed heavily scented rags on their body and wore bags of fragrant herbs to smell better.

settlers brought their soap-making traditions from their homeland.

Heyward Haltiwanger still has the original recipe for Dutch Fork lye soap that came over with the immigrants in 1752.

Water, lard, and ashes are the basic

ingredients. Sand was added if the soap was to be used for scrubbing really dirty hands.

You can buy sodium hydroxide or lye at stores today, but in the old days, they made their own.

Certain woods produced better lye than others. Ashes from apple wood and red oaks made the best lye.

The ashes were saved in a hopper or barrel with holes in the bottom.

Rainwater was poured through the ashes to become a brown lye liquid which they saved.

The hardest part of making soap was using the correct lye strength.

This brown lye water was the proper strength if an egg floated just below the surface. If the egg floated, it was too strong. If it sank too fast, it was too weak.

If a feather dissolved in the lye, it was the proper strength.

Lard from butchering was saved, too.

The Haltiwanger soap requires two boxes of lye, six pounds of lard and six gallons of water. Mix all together and boil until it “spins thread.”

The mixture has to be a bit “thread like” and then poured into molds or a square pan to cool.

When cooled, it is cut in squares and used for laundry, dishes or personal hygiene.

Lye soap has been used for stopping the spread of poison ivy, stains in clothes, floors, dishes, and general household cleaning and eliminating lice.

The best soap was made outside in large cast iron pots.

The Dutch Fork secret is to make the soap on a waning moon cycle, after a full moon.
