FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY: Striped bass: Good. Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that the best fish are being caught on down-lines fished in 40-60 feet of water. A few fish are also being caught on free-lines, and there has been sporadic schooling activity.

Crappie: Good. Captain Brad reports that good numbers of crappie

are being caught over brush in 18-25 feet of water and around deeper docks. Both minnows and jigs will catch fish.

Catfish: Good. Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reports that fan-casting a variety of baits – including dip baits and cut herring – in 5-25 feet of water has been productive for channel catfish.

Bass: Fair. Captain Brad Taylor reports that first thing in the morning some fish can be caught on topwater lures fished around points, and later in the day they will take soft plastics fished deeper in the same areas.

This hoax became big when Facebook became a public company. The talk was that you’d have to start paying to use it.

You don’t, nor will you.

The simple fact is that Facebook makes enough money off advertisers that they don’t need to charge you. All those little ads on the right hand side of your screen are mak-

ing them rich.

Copyrighting content No matter who owns the pictures, posting a block of text to your Facebook wall will NOT change your security and stop Facebook from using your content.

According to Facebook’s policies, the members own their own content. Facebook cannot use any content that is set under a privacy filter, however if you have your pictures and videos set to be viewable by the general public, then Facebook has the right to use it as well. Facebook does not claim ownership of any photos, videos or the like. They simply don’t need to.

Some older social media sites like to show you who viewed your profile. Facebook is a lot more secretive.

Any of the applications that claim they can tell you who has been viewing your profile is lying.

My favorites are the games that say they can tell who loves you or are your best friends. They are just guessing based on who has liked the most posts you’ve made recently.

Asian Peanut Slaw

1 can (11 ounces) mandarin oranges 1/4 cup Asian sesame dressing

2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper 1/2 cup coarsely chopped dry roasted peanuts

1 bag (16 ounces) three-color deli slaw mix chow mein noodles Drain juice from mandarin oranges into mixing bowl and reserve oranges.

Add dressing, peanut butter and red pepper, and whisk until well-blended. Add peanuts, oranges and coleslaw mix, and toss until thoroughly coated. Garnish with chow mein noodles before serving.

1 pound ripe firm peaches, pitted and cut into 1/2-inch pieces

2 medium plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped

3 ounces lightly salted dry roasted peanuts 1/3 cup chopped white onion 1/2 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped

2 tablespoons lime juice

2 tablespoons chopped cilantro 1/4 teaspoon salt In bowl, combine peaches, tomatoes, peanuts, onion, jalapeno, lime juice, cilantro and salt. Mix well and let stand at least 30 minutes before serving.

No Bake Peanut Butter Pie

4 ounces cream cheese

1 cup confectioners’ sugar, sifted

1 cup crunchy peanut butter 1/2 cup milk

8 ounces frozen whipped topping, thawed

1 prepared deep-dish graham cracker or

chocolate-flavored pie crust (9 inches) whipped topping (optional) chocolate syrup (optional) chopped peanuts (optional) candy bar, chopped up (optional) In large bowl, beat together cream cheese and con­ fectioners’ sugar. Mix in peanut butter and milk.

Beat until smooth. Fold in whipped topping.

Spoon into pie shell; cover and freeze until firm.

If desired, pipe extra whipped topping on top of pie then drizzle with chocolate syrup and top with chopped peanuts and candy bar pieces.

Beef Kabobs with Peanut Sauce

2 teaspoons curry powder

2 teaspoons dark sesame oil

1 tablespoon lime juice

1 tablespoon light brown sugar, plus 2 teaspoons

1 teaspoon chili powder, divided 1 1/2 tablespoons soy sauce, divided

1 pound beef fillet, cut into 1-inch cubes 1/2 small onion, grated

1 cup coconut milk

8 tablespoons crunchy peanut butter 8 skewers assorted vegetables (optional) In bowl, mix curry powder, sesame oil, lime juice, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon chili powder and 1 tablespoon soy sauce. Add in beef cubes and toss to evenly coat.

Cover and leave in fridge to marinate at least 30 minutes, or as long as overnight.

Soak skewers in water.

Heat broiler or grill to medium-high heat.

Before cooking beef, mix remaining chili powder, remain­ ing soy sauce, 2 teaspoons brown sugar, onion, coconut milk and peanut butter in saucepan. Stir sauce frequently over medium heat until simmering. Cover and remove from heat, but keep warm.

Thread beef cubes on skewers. Add your favorite vegetables to skewers prior to cooking, if desired. Broil or grill kabobs.

Set broiler pan so surface of beef is 3-4 inches from heat. Broil 7-9 minutes on high heat, turning once, for medium rare to rare. If grilling, heat grill to medium-high heat and grill about 7-10 minutes. Serve with warm peanut dipping sauce.

Lavender farming in the Chama River Valley MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute of it. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

fter dinner at Monica’s El Portal, we wandered through the Old Town square to the San Felipe de Neri Church.

An historic Catholic church, it was built in 1793 and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Albuquerque.

The original church building collapsed in 1792 after a heavy rain and was replaced by the current one.

The towers were added in 1861, a parish school in 1878 and a convent for the Sisters of Charity in 1881.

We stood on the steps but did not go inside as it is undergoing renovation.

Our host, Jeannette Fantl, recommended we stop at a similar church on our way to Santa Fe and Taos.

Thousands of the faithful go there, she said, because they have been told that the soil will heal the ill.

When Jeannette’s father was diagnosed with cancer, he and her brother drove to the church and filled their pockets with the soil.

The lavender farm

The next morning, we had breakfast, read the newpapers, loaded our car and headed north through the Chama River Valley.

We chose secondary roads as we were in no hurry. We were ready for new adventures along the back roads.

Elizabeth Inman and her husband started the farm a dozen years ago.

“We want to bring the best growing information to provide success to our customers and individuals interested in growing their own lavender,” says Elizabeth who’s writing a book about growing it.

The farm sells lavender plants and has a tea room and gift shop for visitors.

Abiquiu is known for its mountainous terrain and the Chama River where the painter Georgia O’Keeffe lived.

We’ve admired Georgia for her bold use of color and her sense of independence.

Lavender grown at higher altitudes produces a finer, sweeter grade of lavender oil.

Want to smell good?

Lavender has a long history.

Ancient Egyptians used as a perfume and in incense.

The Greeks and Romans used it in herbal baths.

In the Middle Ages, it was used as an aphrodisiac.

People believed that sprinkling lavender water on the heads of their loved ones would keep them chaste.

Lavender was strewn on castle and sickroom floors as a disinfectant and deodorant.

It was used to disinfect wounds and as an insecticide to protect linens from moths.

X marks the spot

The lavender farm has strict rules about pets.

It made us think of our furry friend back home.

On mornings when we are home in Lexington, Scoop Bellune makes his needs known.

He whines and wags his tail.

That’s Scoop’s way of saying “I wanna go outside.”

If we are unwise and ignore him, he will bark.

That awakens MacLeod.

It’s not smart to let our furry friends awaken our spouses from their beauty sleep.

Some of us may not need to sleep that much as we don’t

The folks at the Purple Adobe are familiar with the needs of little furry critters.

They know they not only need to relieve themselves but they also have a territorial imperative. They like to mark their property.

When they sniff around and find another animal has left its mark, little boy dogs lift their legs and lay their signatures on top of the intruder’s.

“We love animals, yours and ours,” the Inmans say. “But we do not allow outside animals.

“All animals leave a scent and must relieve themselves.

That encourages other animals to mark a territory on top of the previous animal.

Then we have a problem.

“We apologize if this offends anyone but these are the rules.”

Caring for lavender

We stopped in at the Zen nursery where lavender plants were for sale. It was early fall and the plants were growing.

Lavender is drought tolerant but needs water to survive.

The Purple Adobe uses drip irrigation similar to what we first observed in the desert in Israel 30 years ago.

The Israelis have made the desert bloom with computercontrolled irrigation that feeds the plants water and nutrients. Their tomatoes are big as grapefruits and delicious.

Lavender needs plenty of water. In humid South Carolina it should thrive.

Here in the dry New Mexico desert, it needs help.

What future for public transportation here?

Some call it an epiphany.

Some a flash of insight.

Bob Schneider calls his an “aha moment” — the moment his purpose in life presented itself to him.

It was on a Sunday morning in Knoxville, Tenn.

Schneider had come to Knoxville to study for a graduate degree. He had pointed his career and education toward academia.

When he gained an internship with the Knoxville public transit system, little did he suspect it would change his life.

Public transportation wasn’t really on his radar.

His boss had assigned him to do a study of bus riders and routes.

One Sunday morning he was riding around town checking bus stops when he spotted a solitary figure waiting for a bus.

He pulled to the curb and asked the man where he was headed.

Home, the man said.

He had taken the bus downtown. Before the city started a route near his home, he had to pay $25 for a cab ride to town.

The man was a low paid worker. Schneider realized $25 was a lot for him.

This set him to thinking

about other low-paid people — burger flippers and day laborers who depend on buses to get to and from their jobs each day.

A dependable transit system was important to the lives of these people.

If he could make it more efficient, cost-effective and attractive to ride, he could make a difference in the lives of many people.

That aha moment changed his thinking and his life.

Instead of teaching political science in a classroom, he adopted a new career.

Bob Schneider the graduate student is now Dr. Robert Schneider, head of Comet, the Columbia public transportation system.

Like many of us who read the Chronicle, he and his family live in Lexington.

It is an attractive place to live. But it has no public transit system for those who need one to get to work, shop and take care of other necessities.

We sat down to talk with Dr. Schneider the other day about what he sees as the future of public transit in our fast-growing county.

We asked what he sees as the future needs and solutions for a county like ours that is moving from rural to urban and suburban?

“The next opportunity,” he said, “is for the close-in cities

“The alternate modes such as Uber and taxis help with individual needs, such as later travel needs or to reach outlying areas.”

We asked if rural areas will be under-served simply because it may not be practical or profitable to reach them?

“Rural areas are always

going to be a challenge,” he said. They require a tremendous amount of resources for what is an individual service.

“Sunset Boulevard (U.S. 378) has a mix of dense retail and employment but also a growing number of apartments and housing developments within walking distance. There’s enough people and purpose to maintain a steady stream of riders.

“But as you travel further out, U.S. 378 begins to have fewer businesses and homes and the number of people you might serve is reduced.

“It doesn’t mean their needs are less important.

But what it means is from a cost perspective, the per trip cost begins to increase. And that’s not unique to transit.

It’s difficult to provide trash, fire, police or similar services. It’s one of the reasons why the rural communities are shrinking.

“Citizens want more services and are moving closer to towns and cities. It’s a national trend that has been seen right here in South Carolina.”

There are no easy, inexpensive answers to Lexington County’s growing public transportation needs.

But a few people like Dr. Schneider who are committed to making a difference can give us needed advice.

They get the opportunity to grimace and growl their differences about in this surprisingly un-fun pairing. Batman (Ben Affleck) pegs Superman (Henry Cavill) for a threat the

first time he sees the all-powerful alien flying about, breaking buildings in his climactic battle against Zod, and thus begins plotting how to remove that threat by killing the Man of Steel. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) also makes it into the Battle Royale.

For a superhero brawlturned-teamup, it sure is grim.

So grim that it makes the Dark Knight films look like the colorful Spider-Man flicks we got last decade. They are just so serious and irrational, it’s hard to feel anything for these heroes. Director Zack Snyder (“Suckerpunch,” “300”) continues his war on color and keeps it gray and desaturated.

“Miles Ahead” (R) -- Don Cheadle stars, directs and co-wrote this out-of-left-field thriller about a great Ameri-

can musician. Repeat: This is not another musical biopic. In the late ‘70s, the legendary trumpeter dropped off of the map for a while, caught in conflict with his music label and shut up in his New York apartment. Ewan McGregor plays a fictional Rolling Stone reporter who shows up at Davis’ door, only to get socked in the face and pulled into a deadly game between the musician and ruthless agents of Columbia Records.

You won’t get many details or a lot of insight about Davis’ life. You will get a strange but engaging portrait of a complicated artist as written, directed and performed by another great artist. It’s clear that Cheadle’s interest in Davis runs deep, and that manifests on-screen. This story about

Davis may be larger than life, but it’s built to scale.

“Elvis & Nixon” (R) -- Based on a bizarro-world photograph that kickstarted the ‘70s, this short feature looks at the mega-meeting between The King (Michael Shannon) and the The President (Kevin Spacey). With Nixon falling out of touch with a generation he saw as degenerates, his staffers set up a photo-op with the biggest rockstar they can pull: Elvis Presley, jumpsuited and past his prime. Shannon steps into a different light from most of his character (usually icy-eyed men of ab-

normal severity) and creates an Elvis who is a bit wacky, but also multi-dimensional.

“Demolition” (R) -- After losing his wife in a car accident, Wall Street wonder Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal) doesn’t seem like a man in mourning.

His feelings start leaking out in letters he writes to the customer-service department of a vending machine company -- he never got the candy he paid for while he waited on his wife in the hospital. Davis’ grief also takes the shape of maniacally dismantling every faulty mechanism in his life, from his leaky fridge to a de-

fective door and even taking a hammer to his own house. His letters contain little details about his life that draw attention from Karen (Naomi Watts), a similarly lost soul who helps pull Davis from the brink.

Porcupine Encounter A local veterinarian in the Northeast was known for his wry humor. He surpassed himself one summer day when a city dog was brought to him after an encounter with a porcupine.

After almost an hour of prying, pulling, cutting and stitching, he returned the dog to its owner, who asked what she owed.

“Fifteen hundred dollars, Ma’am,” he answered.

“Why that’s simply outrageous!” she stormed. “That’s what’s wrong with you Maine people, you’re always trying to overcharge summer visitors.

What do you do in the winter, when we’re not being taken advantage of here?”

“We raise porcupines, Ma’am,” came the quick reply.

Classroom Management A school teacher injured his back and had to wear a plaster cast around the upper part of his body. It fit under his shirt and was not noticeable at all. On the first day of the term, still with the cast under his shirt, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in school.

Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, he opened the window as wide as possible and then busied himself with desk work. When a strong breeze made his tie flap, he took the desk stapler and stapled the tie to his chest.

He had no trouble with discipline that term.

Hospital Discount An expectant mother was being rushed to the hospital, but didn’t quite make it. She gave birth to her baby on the hospital lawn.

Later, the father received a bill, listing “Delivery Room Fee: $500.”

He wrote the hospital and reminded them the baby was born on the front lawn. A week passed, and a corrected bill arrived: “Greens Fee: $200.”

than patriotism was behind the Pledge’s creation? A master wordsmith penned the famous words for an unlikely reason - it was a clever marketing gimmick with a hidden purpose. But the real shocker is the way kids originally saluted the flag while reciting it.

Get ready to learn the incredible story of how we got the Pledge of Allegiance.

It started with Francis Bellamy. Born into a devoutly Baptist family in Upstate New York, his minister father died before Bellamy was born. The boy followed in his father’s footsteps, studying theology and entering the ministry himself in the 1880s.

Social experimentation was in the air in those days, and Bellamy became something of a socialist Baptist. The problem was, his parishioners in New York state and Massachusetts weren’t. The result: he was bounced from church to church.

Dissatisfied with the ministry, he wound up in New York City and found a new calling.

The Youth’s Companion was a popular magazine in the Victorian Era. Its target audience was good girls and boys, and it instructed them on ways to become even “gooder.” Bellamy got a job in its premium division.

For several years, The Youth’s Companion had sold American flags as a promotion to its readers. The goal was to place a flag in every classroom in America. That, it was believed, would help pass on American values to

The bartender promptly serves up a beer.

“How much will that be?” asks the neutron.

But by 1892, sales were slumping. Flags were now on the walls in 26,000 schools around the country. Ford believed still more juice could be squeezed from this fruit; but how?

History came to the rescue.

With perfect timing, 1892 happened to be the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the New World. The Youth’s Companion pushed for a Columbian Public School Celebration to mark the occasion … and to sell more school flags, too.

Francis Bellamy was tasked with making both happen.

“But they are out of season!” responds the warden.

Professional Problems While attending a convention, three psychiatrists take a walk.

“People are always coming to us with their guilt and fears,” one says, “but we have no one to go to with our own problems.”

“Since we’re all professionals,” another suggests, “why don’t we hear each other out right now?”

They agreed this is a good idea. The first psychiatrist confesses, “I’m a compulsive shopper and deeply in debt, so

fervor. He promoted the event to a national convention of school superintendents. They liked the idea so much, they created a special committee to get local schools involved, with Bellamy as its chairman.

All agreed the U.S. flag was central to the celebration.

But a nagging problem remained: how to get schools that hadn’t bought flags to purchase them?

Then inspiration hit. Bellamy proposed a Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, to be recited by all American students on the same day.

Bellamy sat down at a desk and picked up a pen. Two hours later, his 23 word masterpiece was finished. The original Pledge said: “I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivis-

The third psychiatrist says, “I know it’s wrong, but no matter how hard I try, I just can’t keep a secret.”

Marine Joke A sailor in a bar leans over to the guy next to him and says, “Wanna hear a Marine joke?”

The guy next to him replies, “Well, before you tell that joke, you should know something. I’m 6’ tall, 200 lbs, and I’m a Marine. The guy sitting next to me is 6’2” tall, weighs 225, and he’s a Marine. The fella next to him is 6’5” tall, weighs 250, and he’s also a Marine. Now, you still wanna tell that joke?”

The sailor says, “Nah, I don’t want to have to explain it three times.”

Fully Automated The world’s first fully computerized airliner was ready for its maiden flight without pilots or crew. The plane taxied to the loading area automatically, its doors opened automatically, the steps came out automatically. The passengers boarded the plane and took their seats.

The steps retreated automatically, the doors closed, and the airplane taxied toward the runway.

The Pledge appeared in the September 8, 1892 edition of The Youth’s Companion. The gimmick worked. It’s pretty hard to say the Pledge without a flag (wink wink). Desire to be part of the big event spurred the final schools into purchasing Old Glory. The result: the magazine sold thousands more flags.

And on October 21 of that year, millions of students recited the Pledge for the very first time.

There was something else, too. The original Pledge was said with students standing and giving the “Bellamy Salute.” It was the traditional Roman Salute from the time of Caesar, right arm fully extended with palm straight out.

Sound familiar? Maybe it’s because Fascists in Italy and Nazis in Germany also used the same salute, but with a sinister meaning. When the U.S. entered World War II, kids standing with outstretched arms pointing at a flag wasn’t such a good idea. So in 1942 Congress amended the Flag Code to say the Pledge should be recited the way we know it today, with the right hand over the heart.

The Columbian Public School Celebration was a big success, and it cemented Bellamy’s reputation at the top of the newly emerging advertising and public relations fields.

In fairness, Bellamy sincerely believed his efforts instilled what he called “Americanism” in kids living amid a flood of

“Welcome to the debut of the world’s first fully computerized airliner. Everything on this aircraft is run electronically. Just sit back and relax.

Pastor in Need After the church service a little boy told the pastor, “When I grow up, I’m going to give you some money.”

Well, thank you,” the pastor replied, “but why?”

“Because my daddy says you’re one of the poorest preachers we’ve ever had.

Divine Intervention A young girl who had gotten into big trouble for misbehaving all day was advised by her mother to ask the Lord to help her be a good girl.

The next day she came to her mother, looking downcast.

“You heard me last night when I asked God to help me be good today, didn’t you?” she asked.

“Yes, dear, I did,” said mother.

The girl lowered her voice and said, “Then why do you suppose He didn’t do it?”

Bellamy seems to have experienced a change of heart toward money. After writing the Pledge, he switched from socialist to capitalist and enjoyed a lucrative career as a forerunner to Madison Avenue “Madmen,” using his writing talent to promote big business giants Westinghouse and Allied Chemicals.

The Pledge underwent changes over the years, too, the biggest being in 1954 when Congress added the now familiar words “under God.” Today, 46 states require the Pledge to be recited during the school day. (Hawaii, Iowa, Wyoming and Vermont are the only holdouts). People know the short, direct-to-thepoint Pledge better than the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Those 31 simple words remind us of the essence of what America is all about, and reciting it daily unites us as a nation.

Sure, the original idea was based on the desire to make a few bucks. But the Pledge also produced a lot of good over the years and that is, in the words of a famous advertisement, priceless.
