PICKS OF THE WEEK The Nice Guys (R) — It’s an old-school noir detective thriller put upon two lowlife private detectives, set in a suitably sleazy corner of 1970s Los Angeles.

Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling co-star as Jackson Healy and Holland March, be-stubbled PI’s who are just chin-whiskers away from being a loan shark and a con artist, respectively.

With help from March’s observant 13-year-old daughter (Angourie Rice), they stumble into a missing-person case that is actually the loose thread in a deadly scheme concerning an adult-film star and the U.S. auto industry.

Director Shane Black first made his mark with the “Lethal Weapon” franchise and a slew of other buddy-cop comedy-action flicks. This film is more in line with his 2006 re-entry “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,” which showed more allegiance to Old Hollywood cinema and less interest in the ‘80s and ‘90s Hollywood exploding-helicopter era.

Maggie’s Plan (R) — After falling in — and then out — of love with a married writer (Ethan

Hawke), Maggie (Greta Gerwig) hatches a plan to give him back to his domineering jilted ex (Julianne Moore).

It’s the perfect scheme for a screwball New York-based romantic comedy furnished with Bill Hader and Maya Rudolph as supporting players.

Maggie gets the happily-ever-after early in the story, and the rest is one big awkward moment when she realizes it’s not what she wanted and tries to undo it.

Greta Gerwig is just charming enough to keep you on her side, even as she is being pointlessly manipulative. But that’s the role you need in this kind of film, your love-seeking protagonist does stupid stuff in clear violation of the snappy advice from her funnier friends.

The Man Who Knew Infinity (PG-13) — Srinivasa Ramanujan (Dev Patel) had a rare gift for mathematics, and he had to fight to prove it to a world that doubted a selftaught Indian clerk could advance the field at the highest levels.

It doesn’t take degree in math to appreciate what Ramanujan went through and what he accomplished. This biopic is mostly shown through the relationship between Ramanujan and his Trinity College mentor G.H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons).

The Huntsman: Winter’s War (PG-13) — Just a few years ago, it seemed we were completely awash in an angry uprising of fairy-tale reboots.

There was CG and gratuitous grittiness everywhere.

Among these reboots, 2012’s “Snow White” became a sword-swinging, steel-armored warrior princess with a hunky huntsman by her side.

Now there’s a sort-of sequel with the huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and two — TWO — evil sorceresses in glittering costume, Freya (Emily Blunt) with “Frozen” powers) and Ravenna (Charlize Theron, playing a different kind of ice queen).

Chris also has a complicated chemistry with a fiery huntswoman (Jessica Chastain). The movie jumps out of the screen at you, into your eyes and out of your memory immediately.

Finding beauty in the earth’s most arid spots MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute of it. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

Someone sent me a note the other day about how to relax on vacation.

It was addressed, he said, to workaholics like me.

The advice may be fine for those who are stressed. But they aren’t workaholics.

Workaholics are people like me who love what they do.

I like to think Georgia O’Keefe was like that, too.

She paid her bills with the sales of her art. But, like Van Gogh, she would have painted any way, even if she never sold a single canvas.

It was her purpose in life. It was why God put her here.

She lived here at a place called Ghost Ranch. But before we get to that, I want to fill you in on Georgia’s life.

It’s a fascinating story.

Midlands connection In her 98 years, Georgia witnessed some of the last century’s most dramatic events. This included two world wars and the Great Depression.

She was born Nov. 15, 1887 on a Sun Prairie, Wis., dairy farm, one of seven children.

She won her first award but abandoned art and came to the Midlands to teach at Columbia Col-

lege in 1915.

While she was in Columbia, a friend in New York showed her work to gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz. He urged her to move to New York to devote all of her time to her art.

The two fell in love and lived together. Stieglitz was married and 23 years older.

In 1924, Stieglitz won a divorce and they married. Both continued working on their individual projects. She got the reputation as being a loner.

Although she had striking looks, she was not beautiful.

She had a long, thin aquiline nose and high cheekbones. She could have passed for the sister of the Western movie actor Randolph Scott.

But Stieglitz was enchanted and started photographing her, making more than 350 portraits of her, some nude.

When Stieglitz’s nude photographs of her were exhibited, it created a sensation.

In 1976, she wrote a friend,“When I look over the photographs Stieglitz took of me — some of them more than 60 years ago — I wonder who that person is. It is as if ... I have lived many lives.”

Due to the nude photographs, art critics began to interpret her paintings of flowers as sexual with genitalia.

Georgia denied this but the notoriety drove up the prices of her paintings and made her financially independent.

Among the great American artists of the 20th Century, Georgia O’Keefe was one of the most compelling. Her paintings filled

Westward Ho! By 1929, she needed to escape New York where she felt suffocated by the Stieglitz family and their friends.

She traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico, with a fellow artist. There Mabel Dodge Luhan, a generous woman who had hosted other artistic celebrities such as controversial novelist D.H. Lawrence, moved them to her home in Taos where they could paint.

For the next 20 years, she spent part of each year working in New Mexico.

She visited Ghost Ranch near Abiquiú and moved into a house there. Ever the loner, she explored the

land she loved in her Ford Model A. After Stieglitz died in 1946, she moved permanently to New Mexico and produced an extensive series of paintings of clouds and the desert.

She often talked about her fondness for Ghost Ranch as “Such a beautiful, untouched lonely feeling place.”

Cerro Pedernal — Spanish for flint hill — which she could see from Ghost Ranch she called “my private mountain. It belongs to me.”

Her last years She worked into her 80s but her eyesight was compromised by macular degeneration, leaving her with only partial vision. She stopped oil

painting but continued working in pencil and charcoal.

Juan Hamilton, a potter, became her closest confidant, companion and business manager until her death.

He taught her to work with clay and she produced clay pots and watercolor.

At age 89, she wrote a book about her art and allowed a film to be made about her.

She became increasingly frail in her late 90s and moved to Santa Fe where she died on March 6, 1986.

As she wished, her body was cremated and her ashes were scattered to the wind at the top of Cerro Pedernal.

After her death, her family contested her will as it left everything to Hamilton. The case was ultimately settled out of court but became famous in estate planning.

Much of her estate’s assets went to the Georgia O’Keefe Museum in Santa Fe. The museum also owns much of her work, photographs and her Abiquiú house, library and property.

Her home and studio in Abiquiú was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998.

You can visit her Ghost Ranch home but must make a reservation through her museum in Santa Fe. We checked but the tours were booked for weeks in advance.

We would be back in South Carolina by then.

Getting a buzz off ice cream: What will they think of next?

Sounds improbable, doesn’t it? But it’s come to pass.

Living in Lexington is the woman whose company, JB’s PROOF Alcohol Ice Cream, makes it.

Former Carolina basketball star Jennifer RandallCollins talks with Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bellune about discovering the secret of combining alcohol and ice cream and her own personal story.

Q. How did you discover the secret and what got you involved with starting JB’s to make and market it?

A. I met JB (the inventor) in Lexington, Kentucky, when he was conducting a customer tasting at the restaurant where I happened to be. JB had been working diligently to perfect his recipes and he was exploring options for sales and distribution.

Q. Why did you choose South Carolina as home for your company?

A. When I was appointed CEO, I immediately began research on manufacturing and distribution opportunities that combine alcohol and food products.

The state of South Carolina repeatedly appeared on my radar as a pro business state, particularly for

manufacturing companies and startup organizations with strong economic development opportunities. As a former Gamecock athlete myself, I already had a love for South Carolina’s culture and people. It just seemed right.

Q. Why did you choose Lexington for your new home?

A. Lexington is a wonderful community that is central to my needs as a working mother. Not just the location and accessibility, but the people and the sense of community my kids enjoy through the excellent schools, extracurricular activities,and soccer clubs — that’s why we chose Lexington.

Q. How have you and your family adapted to having a working Mom with her own fast-growing company?

A. I’ll be honest. It’s not easy to be so busy. But I am blessed and fortunate with two fantastic children who support my vision for the company and our family, and they both pitch in wherever they can.

I hope they can look back on this experience fondly and take away the lesson of applying passion, persistence and a never-giveup attitude in chasing your dreams.

Try your hand at this year’s winning recipes from the Lexington County Peach Festival

A

n early morning tradition of each Lexington County Peach Festival is the annual Peach Recipe Contest that includes two categories of judging: Salads & Main Dishes and Desserts, with at least two cups of fresh peaches in each peach dish.

First-place winners in each category receive $75, and second-place winners receive $50.

This year’s winning entries were judged on imaginative use of peaches, simplicity and ease of preparation, appearance and taste.

SALADS AND MAIN DISHES 1st Place: Peach Taco Salad prepared by Clyde Sanders

4 flour tortillas • Bake at 400 degrees for 5 to 8 minutes.

• Place the tortillas over a bowl or a metal tortilla pan.

Shrimp (1 to 1 ½ pounds, depending on size of shrimp) • Put a Tbsp of olive oil in pan.

• Add shrimp and a Tbsp. of taco seasoning mix.

• Cook until done. Set aside.

Peach Salsa • 4 large peaches chopped small • 1 cup of lime juice • 2 Tbsp of sugar • 1 medium chopped Vidalia onion • 2 cups of bell pepper (red, yellow, green) • 2 jalapenos chopped • 4 cloves of garlic chopped • ½ cup of chopped cilantro • Put in heavy saucepan and cook until thickened.

Assembly of tacos: • Put lettuce in bottom and then shrimp.

• Garnish with tomatoes, radishes, and shrimp on top.

2nd Place: Baked Pork Chops with Peach Sauce prepared by Sonja Lumpkin

6 pork chops (center cuts approximately 1 inch thick) • Season to taste with: salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic pow-

der and thyme leaves.

• Place on cookie sheet (lined with aluminum foil) sprayed with Pam. • Sprinkle Panko Crumbs on pork chops, then sprinkle shredded Parmesan cheese (any cheese you like) on top of crumbs.

• Bake at 375 degrees for 45 to 60 minutes.

• Cover lightly with foil mid-way, then remove last 5 to 10 minutes of baking.

Onions • Sauté one large diced onion with a 1/3 stick of butter for 2 minutes.

• Add 1 large (or two small) diced/chopped jalapeno pepper for a minute, season with salt and pepper to taste 3 to 4 cups diced peaches • Dash cinnamon and nutmeg • One 18 oz. jar peach preserves • Add 1 cup of water and simmer until it thickens. Keep warm and spoon over pork chops before serving.

Topping: Mix 1 cup jam/preserves with 2 – 2 ½ cups peaches finely diced or chopped in blender.

• Spoon about ½ to ¾ teaspoon on top of filled, baked shells.

Refrigerate for at least an hour or freeze until serving.

2nd Place: Peach Berry Trifle prepared by Dwayne Schumpert

• 24 oz. pound cake, cut into

small squares • 1 ½ t. bourbon (optional) • 1 can sweetened condensed milk 4 ½ cups fresh peaches, sliced 3 cups milk 2 - 3 ½ oz. packs instant vanilla pudding • 1 - 8 oz. pack cream cheese, softened • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar • 3 cups strawberries

• 3 cups blueberries • In a large trifle dish or bowl, line the bottom with 1/3 of the cake squares.

• Sprinkle with ½ t. bourbon.

• Drizzle with 1/3 of the condensed milk. Top with 1/3 of the peaches.

• In a mixing bowl, stir pudding and milk well for 5 minutes.

• Fold in cream cheese and sugar and mix well.

Ingredients: • 3 – 4 boxes of Mini Filo Shells • 2 – 2 ½ cups fresh peaches • 1 large jar of Peach Jam/Preserves (will need ¼ cup plus 1 cup) • 2 eggs • 12 oz. cream cheese, softened • 1 cup sugar • ½ teaspoon vanilla Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Filling: • Beat eggs, cream cheese together.

• Add sugar and vanilla beating until well blended.

• Add ¼ cup peach jam/preserves and mix until incorporated.

• Teaspoon mixture into prepared shells and bake approximately 25 minutes. Remove from oven and cool.

• Top the peaches with 1/3 of the pudding mixture.

• Top the pudding with ½ of the strawberries. Repeat with layers of the cake topped with bourbon and condensed milk, peaches, and pudding.

• Then use a layer of blueberries (instead of strawberries).

• Repeat the layers a 3rd time, finishing with blueberries and strawberries on top.

Silver forks and spoons were made to use for unique purposes

E

arly silverware from the American colonies was wrought of a unique material known as coin silver.

It is interesting to find pieces and wonder about their intended use. Remember that nearly all the silver we use today had it’s origins in this early time. The American table top continues to be influenced by pieces crafted over 200 years ago or more.

As all objects were hand crafted and made for the intended owner, they represent so much more than a decorative endeavor.

Each ladlE, spoon, fork, knife or other utensil was made for use. Most likely the pieces were made after the porcelain for the household was in place. The silver was crafted to fit each sauce boat, tureen or bowl.

There are many pieces from this early period that we can use today in new ways, yet when they were new their purpose was singular.

Another interesting fact to consider is the scarcity of foods. When food was preserved at home through laborious methods, it was cherished and served to it’s greatest advantage. Salt and sugar curing, drying and smoking kept precious stores savory and safe to consume.

Captain Brad Taylor (803-3311354) reports that the best fish are being caught on down-lines fished 50-80 feet deep in the lower lake.

The free-line bite has pretty much gone away and mostly smaller fish can be found in the creeks.

Are you growing tired of spam?

good numbers of crappie are still being caught over brush in 18-25 feet of water.

Minnows are pretty much the only way to catch fish right now.

CATFISH: Good.

Captain Chris Simpson (864992-2352) reports that fan-casting a variety of baits — including dip baits and cut herring — in 10-25 feet of water has been ef-

fective for channel catfish.

Night fishing is still much more productive than fishing during the heat of the day.

BASS: Slow to fair.

Bass fishing has slowed significantly, with only a sporadic early bite and then anglers struggling to catch fish off points and deeper brush.

Do you remember this?

You’d turn on your computer and boot up that old dial up and then exclaim when it said “You’ve got mail.”

My kids now say this when we go to the mailbox and there is actually something in it.

Usually it is a credit card offer or a magazine.

The switch has been flipped.

We now get so many emails that we groan anytime a new one comes in.

It doesn’t help that all that junk mail has now become spam email and the headlines will make you cringe.

So what can you do?

The first step is be proactive. Don’t give out your email address.

Don’t sign up for anything with your email.

Don’t give it to stores or anyone but friends.

Since most of us have had the same email since the 90’s, the build up of spam mail is atrocious.

The best advice that I can give you, besides creating a new email, is to learn how your spam filters work.

Both Google and yahoo have great ones automatically set up for you.

You can add emails you don’t want to spam by checking the box next to the message and clicking the Spam button.

For Google, click the stop sign with exclamation mark.

I rarely check my spam filters because only spam goes in there.

And if your message was caught up in the spam filter, you better rethink what you sent me.

If you have Bellsouth or

AT&T, just click on the options gear and go to Mail Options.

Then under Spam click on Block Address, then click on Add Block and add each address.

This will, over time, help to clear out that unruly inbox.

For Windstream you can choose what happens to Junk Mail under Settings.

You can review it or have it delete on receipt.

Under the settings tab you can also block or allow messages through.

For anything else, I suggest logging into the actual mail system and finding a Settings button.

You can usually setup some kind of filter to help clear out what you receive each day.

Also, for any messages that you’ve signed up for an no longer want to receive, at the bottom of any bulk mail send there is by law supposed to be an “unsubscribe” option.

Find it and make sure to get yourself off that list.

Or at least try.
