A tragic motorcycle accident left him paralyzed, causing him to voluntarily travel no more and stick to hanging out in his family’s castle.

His parents get him a caretaker (Emilia Clarke of TV’s “Game of Thrones”), who is so gosh-darn cute and high-on-life that she just might get Will to like being alive again.

It’s an adaptation of a book I haven’t read, but apparently the author also wrote the screenplay.

I didn’t quite get it.

Will wants to die rather than be super-wealthy in a wheelchair, and Clarke’s adorability is pushed into overheating.

The Jungle Book (PG) — Director Jon Favreau (“Iron Man,” “Elf”) takes the story out of the safe, cartoony realm of the old animated Disney version, and makes something more solid and intense, while still keeping the lighthearted, optimistic core of the story.

The new Mowgli (Neel Sethi) is great, especially in how he’s able to interact with his CG-animal co-stars.

You’d think there was real tenderness between him and the bear with Bill Murray’s voice.

As an added lure, credits are packed with A-list voicework, including Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson and Ben Kingsley.

It’s not a musical, but some of the familiar tunes have been incorporated in the film (with mixed results).

The CG and creature designs are just plain astounding — seeing the monstrous King Louie emerge on screen gave me a real shock of heebiejeebies.

Jon Favreau shows he’s really got the high-budget, kid-friendly adventure thing figured out.

But most importantly, your headaches may be caused by an abnormal bite, and if so, your dentist can treat them more effectively than anyone else.

A headache is just one symptom that may be attributable to poor occlusion(or a bad bite).

Other symptoms such as pain or noise in the jaw joint, facial pain, sensitive teeth, difficulty chewing, and neck pain may also be related to your occlusion, and should be discussed with your dentist.

Headaches are generally classified into several basic types: Sinus, Cluster, Tension and Migraine. You can determine which type you have by discussing it with your physician or dentist.

While headaches are typically treated by your physician, improper occlusion (your bite) may play a significant role in certain types of headaches as well as other head and neck pain.

One type of headache, tension headaches is by far the most common – estimated by some to be the cause of as much as 90% of all headaches. Further, they are headaches that often originate in, or pain is referred to, the muscles of your forehead.

If you only experience this type of headaches occasionally, they are often controlled with over-thecounter pain medication.

However, if they occur with some regularity or have persisted for a long period of time, it is wise to discuss them with your dentist.

The muscles of the temple of the forehead are muscles that play an important part in the posturing and closing of the jaw. If your occlusion (bite) is not

right, it can lead to abnormal tensions in these muscles – one of the several possible causes of tension type headaches.

If the bite is not corrected, the muscles may remain tense for long periods of time. The contracted muscles do not get a chance to rest and soon suffers from poor circulation – thus a lack of needed oxygen and the accumulation of waste products of metabolism. The result can be pain (headaches).

You see, most people don’t “bite” where their jaw functions the best. They “bite” where their teeth come together the best. For most people, this difference is not a problem, but for many folks, this difference in the bite, can cause muscle imbalance, muscle pain, and headaches!

Many people grind and clench their teeth because they are “wired” to grind and clench their teeth. It’s just part of their “makeup”. Just as some people have allergies, some people have hair loss, some people grind their teeth.

These folks also can have headaches and pain in their temples, especially in the mornings, as their muscles work “overtime”.

So what can your dentist do to help you with your headaches?

Believe it or not, there is some controversy in dentistry for the treatment of headaches and bad bites.

The controversy surrounds

the concept of how the patient should “bite, or rather, when the teeth come together, what is the position of the jaw joint?

The standard theory is called “centric relation”, and strives to position the jaw joint in the anatomically best place to function, when the muscles of the jaw are relaxed, and the joint is in the position that the joint works against the skull.

A second theory, that is employed by some dentists is called “neuromuscular dentistry”. This theory tries to record the position of the jaw when the muscles of closing are exhausted by a tens unit. Somewhat of a “fad”, this technique is not always something that can be replicated from day to day, and may not be as reliable as centric relation. Often a neuromuscular bite requires a large amount of dentistry (crowns and bridges) to “work”. But some patients will find relief in a neuromuscular position.

The first step in treatment of headaches is often the fabrication of a custom nightguard. A nightguard usually is a “horseshoe shaped” and is made in such a way to allow the muscles of the jaw to relax, relieving the headaches.

Often, a nightguard is all the patient needs to be free of headaches. A nightguard works like a pair of glasses; it corrects the bite and helps the patient “get by”. After that, the patient might need some minor adjusting of the teeth (called “equilibration”), some dental restorations or possibly orthodontics (“braces”) to completely correct the bite.

So if you are plagued by headaches, especially in the temples, when you “wake up”, check with your dentist. He may have the cure that you need!

If your cat is geriatric or suffering from cognitive dysfunction (think kitty dementia), be sure the boxes are located in an area easy for your cat to reach. Litter boxes without a cover and low sides are easier for the older cats to use.

Watch for disease

very cat starts out as a kitten but eventually they do begin to age. There is not set age at which a cat becomes elderly. Just like people, individual cats will age at different rates. There are age ranges that cover older cats. Mature cats are usually 7-10 years of age, senior cats are usually 11-14 years of age, and geriatric cats are greater than 15 years of age. I hope to give you an idea of some of the changes you might see and behavioral problems the older cats can experience.

Decreases in abilities As your cat ages you may note a decrease in their ability to taste, smell, or hear. They may be more susceptible to infection as their immune system begins to decline. They may have a harder time digesting and processing fat and protein. Their skin elasticity may decrease. They may be more prone to heart and lung disease. Their vision may begin to decline. Their nails may become brittle. As these changes occur they can affect your cat’s behavior. They may be less active and spend more time sleeping. They may become pickier about their food so that you find yourself buying several different types and flavors of food. Their appetite may decrease. They will not be grooming themselves as they once did or wanting to play as much. They may so-

Sometimes some of the above changes can be related to underlying disease. Don’t just assume all changes are a sign of old age. For example increased thirst and urination can be seen in cats with possible diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, or thyroid disease. Stiffness or changes in their ability to jump up and down can indicate arthritis and pain. Weight loss can be associated with a multitude of diseases. If changes are noted the best thing to do is see your veterinarian.

It is important to pay attention to the changing needs of your older cat. If your cat is having problems with their regular grooming you could find yourself trimming their claws and brushing or combing in areas they are having trouble reaching on their own.

You should pay attention to the litter box. Sometimes the way we realize they are drinking more water is that the litter box needs to be cleaned more often. Leaving food in the food bowl may indicate a loss of appetite which can cause weight loss. Some changes can be very subtle to start as cats are very good at hiding illness. No one knows your cat better than you. If you suspect a problem, you are probably right.

You do want to try and keep your cat active and mentally stimulated. Just as for us, activity helps your cat keep better muscle mass which can help ease arthritis. Activity also improves circulation and keeps your cat more regular with their bathroom habits.

The activity can involve you or can be things your cat can do alone. It depends on your cat’s age and mobility level as to how energetic the activity may be. Short periods of exercise usually work best. Using feathers, wand toys, or laser pointers can get your cat moving but at slower speeds.

Large toys can help with stimulating the joints if the cat will grab and kick at these toys.

These also stimulate the mind as they involve some of their hunting instincts. For meals you can put the food in food puzzles or if your situation allows place small amounts of dry food around your house.

Egg cartons, toilet roll tubes, or paper bags can be inexpensive food puzzles for your cat.

Cardboard boxes can provide a safe spot for your cat especially if climbing to higher perches is becoming more of a problem. Turned on its side the box is very easy to get in and out of for your cat. If you do stand it up make sure to cut one side down so it is easy for your cat to step into the box.

Pay attention to your overall house. If your cat has had to go up or down steps to get to the litter box or food or water, you may need to move these to the level in your house that your cat prefers to use. You should have the food and water dishes located in a differ-

ent area of your house from the litter box, heavy traffic areas, and full length windows.

In the ideal setting bowls are located in a way your cat can reach them from any direction so as not to feel trapped. Consider raising the bowls slightly so they don’t have to bend down as far should they have arthritis in the neck, shoulders, or front legs. A lot of the older cats I see are borderline dehydrated so you may need to have 2 or 3 sources of water provided for them. Some cats like their water to be calm and still and some cats prefer their water to be in motion as with a recirculating fountain.

No matter how many cats you have you should always have one more litter box than cats.

If your cat likes a scratching post, as they age they may prefer a scratching pad that is flat. If your cat likes to sit atop a climbing tree you may find you have to add some steps to help them reach the top. If their perch is on a window sill, you may have to devise some steps to help them reach the area. Shallow steps are better for your cat as they are easier for them to use.

I have tried to touch on some of the more common problems we see in our older cats. If you note a problem you should contact your veterinarian. Unfortunately taking you cat to the vet is not always so easy. Both you and your cat can get very stressed about the visit. We have come up with a feline stress packet to try to make things easier for you and your cat.

A backstage pass to Riverbanks Zoo & Garden

Most of us born after 1970 can't remember "the zoo" not being there.

This is especially true for Midlands children.

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden has been a go-to destination all of our lives, requiring at least one visit every summer.

But current Riverbanks President and CEO Satch Krantz remembers when the zoo was just a concept.

So how did you get to where you are?

"There wasn't a zoo here when I was in college," said Krantz, who graduated from Clemson University in 1972 with a degree in zoology.

"I'd never been to a zoo, because there was no zoo here.

Then I read an article in the newspaper about a zoo being built in Columbia.

"I got in my car and drove down here and met the man who was the first director."

Krantz was told that when he graduated from Clemson, he'd have a job.

After five years of planning and construction, the zoo opened April 25, 1974 In 1976, Krantz took over as director, a position he said has

changed a lot since he started.

"Up until about 1980-85, almost all zoo directors were men who usually didn't have a degree," he said.

"Most zoos were owned by a city or municipality and operated through a parks department. The typical zoo was just a collection of animals — no gift shops and what not — and a zoo director's exclusive responsibility was to make sure the animals were cared for.

"In the early 80s, that began to change with property tax issues across the nation. Folks began to ask, 'Should the city be paying for things like zoos and museums?'"

As a result of that and the Endangered Species Act, zoos changed from small collections of animals to big businesses.

In 2016, Krantz is in the minority among zoo presidents who have a degree in zoology.

He's learned the business end from experience.

Many of those in charge of zoos — a third of them women — come from marketing, advertising or business. They hire zoologists to oversee animal care.

How does your business and zoology experience help you run this place?

"A lot of it falls into two cat-

egories," he said. "For one, I'm a bridge between the animal staff and the non-animal staff.

"If someone who works with animals tells me, 'Oh, we can't have that here,' they can't pull the wool over my eyes. I know the animals.

"To the marketing staff, I can turn to them and say, 'Yeah, they're right. You shouldn't do that.' And the other thing is that it does allow me to sort of guide the collection and make sure we have animals that meet a variety of goals.

"Animals that interest the public are not always animals that need conservation work."

“It started last summer (2015) with the opening of the new entry complex,” he said. “And we opened the grizzly (bear) and otter exhibits.

“This April, we opened Waterfall Junction in the Botanical Garden, followed by Sea Lion Landing in June.

We’re also building a pedestrian bridge between the two

parking lots that should be ready by Labor Day.”

So what’s next?

“The honest answer is, I don’t know,” Krantz said. “Every time we’ve done a major expansion — and this is the fourth — we sit back and observe for a few months and see how these things work, how our guests are reacting, how they fit into the layout of the zoo, has it affected the traffic flow. There’s a lot we look into.

master planners. We’ve been using the same zoo planners since 1984 (CLRdesign), and they’re one of only a handful of firms in the country that specialize in zoo master planning.

“We have a 2-3 day session where we analyze everything. Then we start talking about what we’re going to do next. Our site’s full, so one of the challenges is to spread our guests out a little more to these outer areas while keeping in mind which parts are in the flood plain.”

“I would love to have orangutans,” Krantz said.

“They’re very charismatic animals. They’re in real trouble in the wild ... I think they’d make a great addition to the zoo.”

What’s going on with the U.S. 378 entrance?

As of (mid-July), they still hadn’t started working on the replacement, but it’s my understanding they’ll begin working on it soon.

Did the closure of the tadpole pool have anything to do with the effluence from the Carolina Water facility?

What do you say to would-be animal rights activists?

“People who make those statements ... those people normally don’t have an understanding of the zoo or the wild ... the fact that people have this mental picture of ‘the wild’ and the sad thing is it’s almost all gone. They just relocated 100 elephants from Zambia by helicopter to keep

them from being poached.

“We’re involved in lots of conservation efforts around the world. We call it working outside the fence. Our conservation work is not limited to what’s here, on site. We’re funding work (all over the world), as are most zoos.

“I can’t remember the exact figure, but I think the 200 zoos and aquariums accredited by the AZA spent $240 million on conservation efforts worldwide.

“The Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago led an international

effort a few years ago to vaccinate all the lions for distemper and rabies, two diseases that overpopulation has pushed onto lions at a higher rate than they’d normally experience.

“Conservation is a complex issue. If it was simple, the rhinos wouldn’t be gone, the elephants wouldn’t almost be gone. There’s this term called the conservation paradox, which is the rarer an animal becomes, the more people try to kill it. It’s a horrible situation.”

“Actually, those two things were totally different issues.

The (Carolina Water) spill didn’t impact us much. We do pump water out of the river for irrigation so we did stop doing that for a bit. But the tadpole pond just happened, coincidentally, to be closed

We enlarged the buffer area between the mining area and our neighbors, redesigned the entrance to move truck traffic off local roadways and took extra steps — beyond what was required — to further benefit nearby homeowners and the environment.

We have hundreds of quarries across the country, including 11 in South Carolina. Many operate in close proximity to homes, schools, cemeteries and churches that — in many cases — are located within a few hundred feet of our mining area. We live together as neighbors and help one another in times of need.

As we work through the permitting process with the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), we’d like to share a few facts with you:

• Safe Blasting: Blasting, which typically lasts less than a second, is highly regulated to protect people and structures and will occur only during the day, initially averaging only once or twice a month. Total annual blasting time will amount to less

than a minute in a typical year, depending on market demand.

• Protecting Water Resources: Wells within a half-mile of the quarry will be surveyed to provide additional assurances to homeowners. As an extra measure, groundwater on the site will be monitored, and those findings will be reported to the state to safeguard the community’s water resources.

• Protecting the Air: Our Dust Control Plan, specifically tailored for this site, will ensure compliance with state regulations designed to protect public health. DHEC has determined the Lexington Quarry will be well within both federal and state air quality regulations.

The Lexington Quarry will be strictly regulated at the federal, state and local levels. Vulcan is a leader when it comes to operating and serving our communities in a safe and responsible manner, and we will meticulously adhere to DHEC’s guidelines.

Local resident uses antique lamp with globe painted by his mother

T

his beautiful lamp belongs to the son of the original owner. This tall, columnar oil lamp was used in the 1850’s to light antebellumhomes, offering a stable and reliable light. This lamp is cast of bronze which has been gilded to make it even more attractive. This heavy material would act as a ballast which kept the lamp and it’s oil and flame safe from harm; this stable foundation was essential to the daily use this lamp would have encountered.

It is impossible to look at the lamp without admiring the hand-painted glass shade that sits atop it. It has been expertly painted with a beautiful pastoral scene with a border of vibrant orange poppies. At some point it was converted from a gas lamp to use electricity.

It is interesting to hear more of the story of the lamp; here is it in the words of the son of the owner: “My mother, was born in 1910 in a small town in Texas and grew up with her 4 brothers and 1 sister on the land owned by someone else but farmed by her father in South Texas. She started teaching school as soon as she graduated from high school. She would go to college in the summer and teach in the regular school year. She and my father and I moved to the oil fields in West Texas in the mid 50’s where she continued to teach 1st grade. During the late 50’s and early 60’s we would go on family vacations to Colorado. As often as she could she would stop at antique shops in the small towns in Colorado or New Mexico and pick up everything from chairs to these lamps or pieces of China. I am not sure of the exact date when she purchased them but I think it was in the late 50’s. Before I graduated from high school, she began to paint china. She would take lessons on the weekend or in the summers when she was off from school and paint as often as she could. She bought a kiln so she could “fire” her own pieces of China after she painted them. After she sent me off to college she really started

painting even more and at some point decided that these lamps needed new globes. I think she finished the globes in the mid to late 60’s and used them in her home the rest of her life.

My wife and I have continued to use them in our home in Lexington.”

How wonderful to have an antique with such a special message that can still be used on a daily basis. What a loving message it must be when these hand-painted shades come to life after darkness arrives. The power of one person in a family to make a lasting impact on the next generation is great.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report STRIPED BASS: Good.

Captain Brad Taylor (803-3311354) reports that the best fish are being caught on down-lines fished 50-80 feet deep in the lower lake.

The free-line bite has pretty much gone away and mostly smaller fish can be found in the creeks.

Who’s the big, bad bully online?

CATFISH: Good. Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reports that fan-casting a variety of baits — including dip baits and cut herring — in 10-25 feet of water has been effective for channel catfish. Night fishing is still much more productive than fishing dur-

ing the heat of the day..

CRAPPIE: Good.

Minnows are pretty much the only way to catch fish right now.

With access to social media and the ability to talk anonymously online, it’s easy for teenagers to say things they wouldn’t say to someone’s face.

Parents may find it hard to realize children are easily swayed by what a crowd is doing, thinking or saying.

The 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 21% of girls and 8.5% of boys had been bullied online.

The study of students in grades 9 through 12 showed that those who spent five or more hours online or video gaming were at a higher risk for suicidal attempts or thoughts.

How do we help keep them safe?

Yik Yak Did you know an app called YikYak lets you post anything you want anonymously and those nearby with the same app can see it.

Yes, that is the point of the app. You choose an area, let’s say Lexington. Then you post anything you want. Anyone on YikYak of Lexington can see and respond to your post.

Imagine opening that app and seeing that someone posted a horrific story about your child. It’s something no one should know, let alone the thousands of people on the app.

On another app called Whisper, you can post a secret in different sections. They are supposed to be your own secrets, like ‘What is the worst thought you’ve had about a teacher?’

Often these become avenues of getting back at someone.

In this technological age, we’ve given teenagers the ability to say whatever they want without consequences.

Watch out It isn’t going to stop. You can’t change it. What you can do is watch.

Know the applications and social media sites that your

child uses. SnapChat, Vine, Whisper, YikYak, Kik Messenger, Whatsapp, Instagram and Tumblr are the most used apps for teens and preteens.

Be vigilant as to who they are talking to and interacting with, and what they’re doing on these sites.

Don’t just watch for them being bullied. Be aware if they do the bullying.

Make sure that you take a stand. As their parent, don’t put up with them acting out toward other children.

I have heard it a lot. ‘My child won’t be a little pansy.

They will be able to handle it.’

But when the video shot in the locker room is posted online, should they really be able to handle the shame and fear?

How about girls who are told they are so ugly they should just kill themselves?

Should they really have to learn to handle that?

Maybe it’s just me but I can tell you, if I catch my daughter bullying another child, you better believe she will live to regret it.

I won’t let her forget that others have feelings just as she does.

Except, she wasn’t. As mentioned earlier, gold medals weren’t given at the 1900 games. In fact, the competition was so haphazard, modern researchers didn’t uncover the milestone until decades later.

Preacher’s Deathbed An old preacher was dying. He sent a message for his doctor and his lawyer to come to his home.

During a readiness exercise, two Air Force security policemen were guarding entry to a bunker-like structure where aircraft were kept.
