Should your pet be diagnosed with the disease, your veterinarian will give you instructions for home care to provide for your safety.

MRSA or methacillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus is another disease that gets media attention. It is also a bacterial illness. It is much more common in people and not seen that often in our pets. In our pets we most commonly see MRSP or methacillin resistant Staphylococcus pseudointermedius. Staph pseudointermedius is common on the skin and in the nose of healthy dogs so people are potentially exposed every day. Infections in dogs usually occur on the skin. Staph pseudointermedius can be found in the nasal passages of a small number of healthy people. It is thought it was probably acquired from their dog, but infections in people are Extremely Rare. MRSP infections are also Rare in humans since it is not a normal bacterium of people.

MRSP can be passed between pets and people but that doesn’t mean you will get sick. However, there is no reason to take risk. If your pet has been diagnosed with MRSP you should 1.Wash your hands after contact with your pet

2.Avoid touching the infected site if possible 3.Try and keep the area covered if possible 4.Decrease contact with the nose of your animal so you might not be able to snuggle and hug till the infection is gone.

5.Wash beds in hot water

with hot air drying when possible.

Most diseases can be avoided just by practicing common sense. If you have more questions, talk with your veterinarian about your concerns.

It was noted British wit Hector Hugh Monroe -- better known by his pen name, Saki -- who made the following sage observation: “A little inaccuracy sometimes saves a ton of explanation.”

When Mozart was young, he traveled to Rome to hear Gregorio Allegri’s “Miserere” performed by the papal choir.

This piece was performed only once a year, and the pope had forbidden its performance anywhere else in the world.

There was only one copy of the score, and it was kept in a vault in the Vatican. According to a papal decree, anyone who reproduced the work in any way would be excommunicated from the Catholic Church. After Mozart heard the performance -- only once -- he transcribed the entire piece. When the pope heard of this feat of memory and musical genius, rather than excommunicating the prodigy, he awarded Mozart the Cross of the Order of the Golden Spur.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a debilitating disease. It usually begins gradually, commonly presenting with morning stiffness, weakness, and widespread muscle aches.

Eventually joint pain appears. Joints can become warm, tender, and stiff.

When joint inflammation sets in, the joints become swollen. Affected areas include the fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, toes, and neck.

Additional symptoms include fever, hand and feet deformities, lung inflammation, numbness, and tingling, among others. Joint destruction may appear within one to two years of the appearance of the disease. Lifelong treatment is required, as there is no cure, nor is the cause currently understood.

a combination of medications, physical therapy, exercise, and surgery when indicated.

Some other similarities between RA and perio disease bear consideration. Both conditions require a lifetime of disease management. Early detection and aggressive management of RA can delay tissue destruction in some cases. The same is true for perio disease; however, prevention is possible as well if gingivitis is identified and adequately managed.

Some research has shown improvement in RA symptoms following successful perio treatment. This is likely due to the reduction in the oral contribution to the total inflammatory burden, following the favorable perio treatment outcome.

But let us look at this just one step further… There has been a documented case where a root canal that went “bad” exacerbated rheumatoid arthritis…

Dental infections can come from an infected root

canal tooth, gum disease or sites of previously extracted teeth, all providing potentially 300 to 400 different pathogens. Bacteria, viruses and fungi or any combination plus degenerating protein substances from tooth structures produce toxins (thiol ethers) which circulate throughout the entire body.

Concentration of poisonous substances within a knee, hand, finger or other joint will cause inflammation. This was true in the case where a bad root canal worsened a patient’s rheumatoid arthritis!. Within one to two years before the onset of her RA, the patient had a root canal treatment performed on an upper left lateral incisor. This seemingly innocuous dental procedure resulted in a streptococcus inflection that remained present for 34 years.

An x-ray of the treated tooth showed no visible pathology.

Unfortunately a high percentage of root canal treated teeth (75 percent or more) that become infected, exhibit none of the usual clinical

signs and symptoms of pain, swelling or redness yet spew out their toxic waste products that affect distant sites.

A noninvasive approach utilizing technology developed in the 1930's was used to resolve the streptococcal infection within the tooth.

Following two treatment sessions, the patient’s rheumatoid arthritis resolved by 90% and she stopped taking the prescription drug, Enbrel. No additional therapy was instituted at the time of treatment. This patient has regained a pain free quality of life. The key factor was the removal of the underlying cause -- infected root canal tooth -- which started the release of tumor necrosis factor which lead to the cascade that resulted in worsening rheumatoid arthritis. Interesting!

So, does a root canal cause your rheumatoid arthritis? Not by a long shot!
