One example: Net neutrality proponents don’t want cell phone companies.

Most major carriers have an “unlimited” data plan. But it isn’t really unlimited.

You have up to a certain amount of usage and after that you are put under a slower internet speed to limit you.

This is a manipulation of the transfer of data.

Right now, Netflix is trying to stop Verizon from slowing down connections to their videos.

In response to the heavily decorated, floral inspired silver of the Victorian era, a movement began in silver and other arts that was known as “arts and crafts.” Gone are the swirls, blossoms, and gargoyles. Heavy motifs are replaced by hammering—the silversmith as artist is celebrated.

Although not one of a kind, many handmade examples were crafted and garner as much attention now as they did in the 1910 period that defines their genre. Also, the production of useful pieces was paramount. The Victorian ideal of “too much is not enough” wasted away under a more spare approach to silver for the table. Silver became art. It was forged as a painter would paint a canvas. The inspiration, love and devotion to craft that define “fine art” also defines silver of this nature.

Mass production was scoffed at, sets of things were less desired than one special object of great artistic merit. This salad set was made in this period. The surface of the silver seems to glow; the tiny taps of the silver smiths hammer allow any available light to play on the surface, its wattage determined by the skilled hand of the maker.

There are very tiny silver rivets that hold the silver portions in the wooden handles. They are attached this way for secure use. Although very elegant, this set is also very practical. Each of us would know how to use it today and be able to do so with ease.

The silver used in the production of this set is also very special . It is made of 950/1000. This is above the world standard of silver, known as sterling, which is 925/1000. This softer alloy made for an easier time when hammering the pieces into shape and form. It allowed the silversmith greater artistic freedom as less force was needed during the execution of the objects.

How wonderful tHat examples such as this still find themselves in use on modern table tops. The artistry of this bygone era is often overlooked as the Victorians were such a generational force. I hope you will take a moment to seek out some of these beautiful pieces. They were made by all the formal silver houses of the day- Gorham, Lunt, Wallace, Tiffany and many more. They were also made by talented artists of singular merit such a Kalo, Alan Adler, George Jenson, David Anderson, as well as talented modern silversmiths such as Kaminer Haislip of Charleston.

However, just because you are on Time Warner’s website – now known as Spectrum – you are told that it is not

available. Or vice versa.

That is what these companies want. They use fear against us.

They tell us they want the ability to limit what we can access so that they can stop us from accessing “bad” websites like adult XXX websites.

In reality, they just want to control what you can and can’t do while using their service.

The net neutrality fight would let users control their choices.

If you don’t want to view these sites, don’t go to them.

Don’t want your children on a certain site?

Install parental locks.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 357.86 (full pool is 360.00), and temperatures are in the mid-80s.

Clarity is good.

Lake Murray bass are firmly in summer mode, and veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that there isn't a lot of change in the overall pattern since the beginning of the month.

Early, there is a shallow bite around the banks, and after that you need to look around deeper channel points. Doug notes that if we get some rain and cloudy weather it can be a good time to look around the bank later into the day, particularly since deeper fish don't bite as well

when it is cloudy. When it is hot and sunny, you pretty much need to concentrate offshore outside of a small window first thing.

Tournament angler Andy Wicker of Pomaria has also spent time on Murray recently, and he notes that it's not taking a lot of weight to win tournaments.

In addition to finding some fish shallow early (before 8 a.m.) on topwaters like a buzzbait, frog or PopR, he has also found some schooling fish out over deeper water. Most of these fish seem to be in the 2 to 2½ pound range. They have also caught them on the bottom around brush.

On the striped bass front, Cap-

tain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that the best action has been coming on down-lined herring fished in 40-60 feet of water.

Pretty much all of the fish are out on the main lake moving towards the lower pool, and there have even been some reports of fish caught in 80 feet along the dam.

Crappie fishing has been really good recently, and Brad reports that he is catching fish around brush in 15-20 feet of water at the mouths of creeks on the upper part of the lake.

The fish have been 6-12 feet down, and they will pretty much only bite toughies that are small as you can get.

In catfish news, Captain William Attaway (803-924-0857) reports that the spawn is winding down as in most of the area lakes.

That means that most of the fish are headed deeper, although they will come into shallower water to feed at night. Thirty feet is a good depth range to target during the day, while at night 15-25 feet is a good range.

Fish will be found off long points and humps, and fishing the deeper side of channel buoys on the lake is a good bet. For numbers of fish dip baits are hard to beat, while for a little better quality try cut bait.

At night you have a good shot at

tangling with a good flathead on Murray right now if you fish live bait around brush.

Finally, if you just want to catch numbers of fish, it may be hard to beat the white perch fishery.

The best bite is up the lake because of the threadfin population, and fishing long ledges that run out to the channel are good places to look.

Twenty-25 feet is a good range to target, and they may come up to 15 feet.

Minnows, jigging spoons and even strips of fish belly meat will catch perch, with the best bite early and late.

A father’s gift still inspires his daughter This month, Pat McNeely, author of Civil War books, recommends her 1923 copy of Elbert Hubbard’s Scrap Book.

hen my father took a job as an agriculture teacher in the summer of 1945, our family moved to a 24-acre farm on the outskirts of Greenville.

Our five-room weathered plank house, which had belonged to tenant farmers, had no running water or indoor plumbing or electricity. Our only heat was from fireplaces in two rooms and a cast-iron stove in the kitchen, where we gathered to get warm while Mama was cooking.

By the fall, Daddy had wired the house and installed a large coal-and-wood burning heater in the living room along with corner book shelves where my parents put their small collection of treasured books.

A true resource My parents never paid full price for anything and always bought second-hand cars. Before school started that fall, they paid full price for a new set of the 1945 World Book Encyclopedia.

I remember how excited we were as Daddy unpacked the red books with navy blue and gold titles and set them one by one on the middle shelf.

Not a day went by that we didn’t reach for those books.

We pored through them to find topics and information for essays all through grade school and college. I was always learning how to do something with directions from the encyclopedia. At one time, I aspired to read every book in the encyclopedia, but I fell by the wayside somewhere around D or E. I can still see those corner book shelves in my mind. At one time I could close my eyes and tell you the names of all of our books and where each was located on the shelf.

Great writing Of all the books on those shelves, my favorite is a dogeared 1923 copy of Elbert Hubbard’s Scrapbook. My father bought and signed it in 1938. It’s a collection of excerpts, essays and poetry by the world’s greatest writers, and I have used it all my life for ideas and inspiration and examples of good writing.

It’s not a book I’ve ever read cover-to-cover at one sitting but one that I open randomly and start reading.

It contained my father’s favorite poem, W.E. Henley’s Invictus, which he frequently quoted when times were hard, which they always were. Even

today, I can hear his voice and feel that glorious thrill when he eloquently finished with, “…It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.”

Anytime I had to choose a poem to memorize and recite in school or college, I always thumbed through the Scrapbook until I found a poet that I liked and then hunted in the library for a full book of that poetry.

Mama’s favorites We always had flowers outside our front door and in our garden — hollyhocks, snap dragons, azaleas, marigolds, zinnias, snowdrops, buttercups and roses. My Mama especially loved daffodils, which ran across part of the yard beside the fence to the fig trees by the barn.

The daffodils were a sea of yellow in the spring, and I remember Mama loving William Wordsworth’s “I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud, That floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host of golden daffodils.”

Even today, when daffodils bloom in the spring or I turn to that poem in the Scrapbook, I can see Mama pinning clothes on the line while daffodils flutter around her in the breeze.

Where to read I frequently took Elbert Hubbard’s Scrap Book to my two favorite reading places: a forked limb with a little plank seat that I built in one of the five pecan trees in front of our house and the loft of our upper barn, where my brothers and I had made a little room with some old mattresses for chairs and boxes for tables.

You lie, you cheat on your wife, you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs.

The lawyer was stunned.

Not knowing what else to do he pointed across the room and asked, “Mrs. Williams, do you know the defense attorney?”

And he, too, has been a real disappointment to me. He’s lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem.

At this point, the judge rapped the courtroom to silence and called both counselors to the bench.

In a very quiet voice, he said with menace, “If either of

An unclear job description A regular walks into the bar and says, “Bartender, one round for everyone, on me!”

The bartender says, “Well, seems you’re in a really good mood tonight, hmm?”

“Oh, you can bet on it! I just got hired by the city to go around and remove all the money from parking meters. I start tomorrow!”

The bartender congratulates the man and proceeds to pour the round.

The next night the same man walks back in, “Bartender, two rounds for everyone, on me!”

The bartender says, “If you’re so happy just over having this new job, I can just imagine how happy you’ll be when you get your paycheck!”

With a wondrous look on his face, the man pulls out a

The Squeeze The local bar was so sure that its bartender was the strongest man around that they offered a standing $1,000 bet.

The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and hand the lemon to a patron.

Anyone who could squeeze even one more drop of juice out would win the money.

Many people had tried over time, but nobody could do it.

One day a scrawny little man came in, wearing thick glasses and a polyester suit, and said in a tiny, squeaky voice, “I’d like to try the bet.”

After the laughter had died down, the bartender said OK, grabbed a lemon, and squeezed away.

Then he handed the wrinkled remains of the rind to the little man.

The crowd’s laughter turned to total silence as the man clenched his fist around the lemon and six drops fell into the glass.

As the crowd cheered, the bartender paid the $1,000, and asked the little man, “What do you do for a living? Are you a lumberjack, a weightlifter, or what?”

“No,” the man replied. “I work for the IRS.”

Bear-hunting fine A guy, out hunting in Alaska, accidentally shoots a polar bear.

Realizing his mistake, he reports the incident to the local ranger.

A week later, he gets a letter in the mail, telling him that he is being taken to court by the park service.

Arriving at court, he explains to the judge what happened, and the judge comes to a decision.

“As you didn’t kill this protected species intentionally, I don’t intend to send you to prison”, the judge says. “However, it is still a serious error on your part, and I intend to deal with you by way of a fine, based upon the body weight of the animal. For every pound of body weight, you will be fined $10.”

The representative of the park services jumps to his feet, and approaches the judge.

We weighed the animal shortly after it was shot, and it weighed a total of 1000 pounds. Surely, based on that measurement, the fine should be $10,000.”

The judge looks at the ranger, and says, “I made a calculation, taking into consideration, the animals’ weight, minus its two front paws.”

Looking rather confused, the ranger asks, “but why did you not include the front paws in your calculation?”

“Because”, the judge replies, “Every American has the right to bear arms!”

In early August, she docked and deposited the 98 women onboard (there’s no word on how 13 of the original 111 vanished along the way) back in Nashville where it all began.

It had been quite a 28-day trip. An army inspector found the Idahoe’s stateroom “badly

If a soldier patronized an unlicensed prostitute, or if one was found working without a license, it was 30 days in jail.

The program cost $6,000 to operate, and it took in $5,900, almost paying for itself.

Make no mistake: I do not advocate the legalization of prostitution. But this bizarre story does leave you with three morals: • When faced with a pressing problem, it’s good to think outside the box and try an unorthodox solution.

• If that fails, try, try, again.

• Finally, going on an inland river cruise with 111 bitterly angry prostitutes isn’t fun.

Visit Yellowstone instead; you’ll be glad you did.
