PICKS OF THE WEEK "The Angry Birds Movie" (PG) — Audiences finally are getting what we've been clamoring for with such fervor: It's a CG movie based on a phone game that was pretty big a few years ago. Jason Sudeikis voices "Red," a wry red bird sentenced to anger-management classes for running afoul of the peaceful bird-island society. Pigs arrive on a big ship, and only Red is suspicious of them at first. Of course, when the pigs take over, Red and his anger-management class fling themselves into the counterattack.

So it's a big silly overt cashgrab with cartoon humor. At least it features a good cast of voice actors -- Danny McBride, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad -- and that does make a difference in laughs and watchability. In an age where Disney and Pixar have consistently shown that kids' entertainment need not be thoughtless, we got a movie based on a game meant to be thoughtless -- you know what you're in for.

Almighty. This time around, a high-school history teacher (Melissa Joan Hart) is persecuted for using a few quotes from Jesus to talk about one of MLK's speeches. Much like the last one, this sermon is aimed directly at the converted. Lawyers and media professionals are depicted as eager antiChrists, and the ACLU may as well be a Satanic cabal. It's not so much a celebration of faith as another misfired shot in some culture war.

Barbecue blasphemy: A Yankee’s touch to Southern gold Delauder’s thrills Gatlinburg visitors with dynamite pulled pork

During a trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, I had the pleasure of enjoying this beautiful plate of barbecue with fried okra and French fries at Delauder’s Smoky Mountain BBQ. The sauce is a mixture of ketchup, vinegar, pineapple, peppers and other ingredients that blend perfectly with the 24-spice rub on the pork.

I strongly recommend stopping by this restaurant if you find yourself in the Gatlinburg area.

Next to football, it's basically our second religion, and if you're going to open a barbecue restaurant in the south, you better be cooking the gospel.

I recently had the pleasure of traveling to the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area of Tennessee, nestled in the beautiful blue-shadowed Smoky Mountains.

While my fiancée, Katie, and I were visiting, we decided to try as many local, independent restaurants as possible.

But on the last day, we realized what was perhaps our grossest error of judgment: We hadn't tried any local barbecue joints.

The hunt Katie hit up a few websites — Yelp and Trip Advisor — and started going down the list of suggested restaurants.

It was Sunday, so most places were closed, but Katie found a place that had more than 20 fivestar reviews and one four-star review (Someone deducted a star because the owner is a Dallas Cowboys fan. So petty).

After a 30-minute drive up and

down the hills and around a slew of curves, we found ourselves at Delauder's Smoky Mountain BBQ, a tiny restaurant that might fit 25-30 people, tops.

As we walked up, the smoke

from the pit tickled its way across our faces and into our noses, seizing our sense of smell and charming us like snakes.

After sauntering in and seating ourselves, we scanned the simple

but diverse menu and placed our order.

While we waited, Denny Delauder, the owner, began speaking with us as he prepared our food.

Then it hit me like a ton of bricks: Delauder's voice had no twang. He's a Yankee ... cooking barbecue ... in Tennessee.

That's, like, in the South, for crying out loud. It's blasphemy. He can't do that, can he?

Holy taste-bud tantrum, baby I had my reserves about trying Yankee-made barbecue, but I put all homegrown prejudices and favoritism aside, and took the first bite.

Ever heard the phrase, "It's so good, it'll make you slap your momma?"

Well, momma better buy a mouth guard, 'cause she's about to get a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick to the face.

I have never tasted such tender, perfectly smoked pork in my life. It practically dissolved in my mouth, each chew having the coaxing texture of a freshly baked croissant. It was moist, but not saturated, and hearty but hardly chewy.

The sauce Delauder uses for his barbecue is a combination of vinegar, ketchup, pineapple, peppers and a few other key ingredients.

It's a wonderful melody of spicy notes and a sweet, savory bass line that had me asking for an extra serving.

I felt like a lifelong Baptist being converting to Catholicism. I don't know what unholy sorcery Delauder conjured into his recipes, but they're so dadgum good. The slaw was

A dream in progress Delauder's current location has only been open for 10 weeks after spending less than a year closer to downtown Gatlinburg. His passion for cooking, however, started decades ago.

"My mom and grandma taught me how to cook," he said. "To this day, I just love cooking."

Delauder was working for a catering company in Ohio when he got the idea to open a barbecue restaurant in Gatlinburg. First, he had to sample his potential competition.

"We came down here and tried three different restaurants," he recalled. "After the third place, I turned to my family and said, 'I'm gonna kick their (butts).'"

In his 10 months as a business owner, the Indiana native has developed quite a following. On off days, he sells upwards of 60 pounds of barbecue in as little as three hours.

"Well, business comes in rushes," Delauder said, laughing. "I didn't even turn on the (open) sign that day, and we still sold out."

grilled bologna, pulled pork, onions, pickles, nacho cheese, lettuce, sweet jalapeños and barbecue sauce.

The restaurant's signature dish, the Sneaky Pig, is much simpler but complex in terms of flavor thanks to Delauder's self-made meat rub.

"There are 24 spices in my rub," Delauder said. "It took me two years to get that recipe just right, and people seem to love it. It feels so good to have so much love from my customers."

Eventually, Delauder wants to open Delauder's Hog Wild, a restaurant that serves barbecue and many other Southern treats. But until then, he's

happy where he's at.

What particularly makes the current Delauder's special is how the staff (Delauder's family) treats customers.

"We want people to feel at home," Delauder said. "We feed you like you're family."

And he means it. Delauder often stays open late to accommodate avid customers.

"I don't feel right shooing them out the door," he said.

"Family doesn't treat you like that."

Delauder said he's also quite familiar with the stigma placed on Yankees cooking barbecue, but the proof's in the pork, as one customer recently learned.

"We had a noticeably Southern woman come in not too long ago," Delauder recalled. "While she waited for a trolley to come, she gave me what I call 11 minutes of hell, making fun of me, a 'Yankee," for trying to cook barbecue.

"We poked fun for a bit before she walked out. On her way to the trolley, she bought a small pulled-pork slider from my sons out by the road.

About 45 minutes later, she showed up with her entire family to eat dinner at my restaurant," Delauder said, grinning from ear to ear.

Donna’s Day: Things you can do with 5 minutes of free time

hat can you do in five minutes? Anything constructive?

My friend's mom had her doubts about it as a young girl growing up in Oregon. One day she acted bored and fidgety while waiting for her dad to get ready to take her somewhere. He suggested that she do something constructive while she waited. She told him that a few minutes wasn't time enough to get anything done.

Right then they jumped in the car and he drove her to a little house at the end of a streetcar line. It had a stunning garden, full of beautiful flowers. My friend's mom was amazed.

Her dad told her the little

house belonged to a streetcar operator. Each time the streetcar reached the end of the line where the house was located, the operator would hop off and tend his garden for the five minutes he had before he had to hop back on and begin the streetcar's run in the opposite direction. Her father said to her, "Look what the man has accomplished by making good use of the few minutes he had each time the streetcar stopped."

It was a lesson to remember.

You might want to sit around the breakfast table with your kids today and think of the things you can do together that take about five minutes, then make a list to refer to when you are looking for a quick activity to share.

If you happen to lose track of time, remember that in family life there doesn't have to be a clock or a finish line.

Here are ideas to make five minutes in your busy days count: • Pick a chore and finish it together. For example, fold towels from the dryer, wipe down kitchen counters, emp-

ty garbage from all the trash cans in the house, dust picture frames, take out junk from the car or wash bicycle water bottles.

• Floss your teeth.

• Write a thank-you note.

• Whistle.

• Recite the alphabet backward.

• Practice times tables.

• Shine a pair of shoes .

• Fill a birdfeeder, wash a dog bowl or clean out the kitty litter box.

• Grab a pen and paper and play tic-tac-toe.

• Read a picture book with a preschooler.

• Tell recollections of a special event in your children's lives.

• Put together a to-do list for tomorrow.

• Delete emails, photos and messages.

• At bedtime, tell a story from your childhood about a time when you misbehaved.

Kids like to hear how you got out of a jam. Don't be surprised if they want to hear it over and over again.

n 18th and early 19th century America, food was largely what you grew yourself or what you gathered from the wild. Sugar was considered a rarity and often reserved for special occasions. We are just a few generations away from people who canned and preserved nearly everything they ate as there were little alternative food sources.

The seasons provided and what was eaten fresh was at the height of ripeness and goodness with the remaining supplies being “put up” before spoilage occurred. Spices were one way to vary the taste of a certain food that was over-abundant.

Many of you have recipes from generations ago that include specific spices that truly change the flavor of food. A good xample would be the use of cloves in some preserved peach recipes.

SPICES WOULD ALSO be gathered locally or perhaps traded for in port cities where exotic, oriental spices were making their way to the American shore. These exotic spices became a source of pride and many “fancy” recipes were developed using their palate-pleasing flavors and aromas.

It becomes very easy to understand why so many vessels were made in silver and in wood to keep these spices clean and safe. A few examples would be: • tea caddy – a silver or wooden locking vessel for keeping the tea safe from spoilage.

• spice cabinet – a small, multi-drawered chest that would sit atop a kitchen table holding spices like anise, cinnamon, whole nutmegs, vanilla pods, all kept safe from harm inside these wooden confines.

• sugar chest – an actual piece of furniture

t’s that time of year, back to school time.

Here in Lexington District One, starting in sixth grade, students receive an iPad for school and homework. That’s right, in just a few weeks, my kid will be bringing home a $600 piece of technology to “learn” on.

In an effort to educate myself and those around me I thought, how do I keep her safe with all this technology around?

Here is the biggest tip I can give you parents, pick it up and learn how to use it yourself. All those applications your kids are using, figure it out yourself as well. That way you know the dangers.

Just remember that the popular applications like Facebook, Instagram, Vine, SnapChat, Pinterest, Musically, and Facetime are all

large enough to hold a cone of sugar and the tongs used to grind it. Along with a clear glass dish to catch the ground sugar would be “sugar scissors,” a smaller version of the larger tongs used to lift the large sugar cone from the box.

These smaller scissors were usually silver and could be used on the table top as well as in the kitchen house.

Bass: Fair to good. Captain Doug Lown reports that largemouth can be found from shallow to mid-depth to deep water. The fishing has been far better early and late. Buzzbaits fished around the banks when there is some shade will catch fish, and plastic worms fished off points have also been working.

There was a loud murmuring in the courtroom as all eyes turned towards the door.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” said the lawyer after a few seconds of anxious waiting, “To be honest with you, nobody is going to be walking through the door, however, from the fact that your eyes all turned towards the door it is quite obvious that you are not sure beyond the shadow of a doubt about my client’s guilt.”

To the lawyer’s great surprise, the jury decided that the man was guilty.
