Workers continue construction on the new press box at Lexington High School’s football stadium. The $4.4 million project features renovations to both the football and baseball stadiums. Plans for the football stadium include a ticket booth and new scoreboard. Because of the reno-

Google calendar is synced on my phone, tablet and computer. Windows wants to change that. Their start is the Edge Browser. Only available for Windows 10 users, it promises a faster load time than Internet Explorer. It has a long way to go to compete with Chrome, but they are trying.

Virtual desktops Finally, Windows has realized what so many have loved about other Operating Systems (OS) like Mac and Linux. Virtual desktops are one of the great things for those of us who practically live on a computer.

Crappie: Fair to good. Captain Brad Taylor reports that as would be expected for the heat of summer crappie are in a brush pattern. While the depth seems to vary from day to day he has found the best fishing in 20-25 feet of water in the mid-lake area. While the better fish are being caught on jigs, for sheer numbers of fish minnows have been hard to beat.

Largemouth bass: Fair. Lake World reports that first thing in the morning anglers can fish a buzzbait around the banks or look for fish schooling off long points and feeding on baitfish that have moved up shallower overnight. Unusual Prescription A nice, calm and respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said, “I would like to buy some cyanide.”

The pharmacist asked, “Why in the world do you need cyanide?”

The lady replied, “I need it to poison my husband.”

The pharmacist’s eyes got big and he exclaimed, “Lord have mercy! I can’t give you cyanide to kill your husband. That’s against the law! I’ll lose my license! They’ll throw both of us in jail! All kinds of bad things will happen.

Absolutely not! You CANNOT have any cyanide!”

The lady proceeded to reach into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband with the pharmacist’s wife.

The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, “Well now, that’s different. You didn’t tell me you had a prescription.”

Johnny Mayo: Man's best friend's best friend

Vietnam War dog handler recalls bonds made in tour

ome memories fade over time, but Johnny Mayo will never forget Tiger and Kelly.

Mayo, a Columbia native, was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1969 to serve in Vietnam. He was eventually trained to be a scout dog handler and served with the 39th Scout Dog Platoon, 173rd Airborne Brigade.

During his tour, Mayo walked "point" for units he was assigned to, which means he and his dog walked ahead of other soldiers to sniff out trouble.

"Most scout dogs were trained to catch the scent of enemies, tripwires and other danger," Mayo said.

"Dogs have such a strong hunting instict. The training was developed to help channel that instict down to those items."

His first dog, Tiger, however, was among the first 10 dogs trained to specifically detect explosives at a certain depth below the ground. After months of training, Tiger was assigned to Mayo in July of 1971.

But when the duo arrived to their assigned unit, the engineers changed their minds about using Tiger to detect mines, so Mayo and his K9 partner were reassigned.

Losing Tiger In their new role, Tiger was to sniff out tripwires instead of mines. On the second day of their second mission, Tiger caught a tripwire, and detonated an explosive.

"It wasn't something he was trained to do," Mayo said, grief still evident in his voice.

Luckily for Mayo, mine detection dogs were trained for off-leash use, so he and other soldiers were about 25-30 feet away during the explosion. He suffered no injuries, but Tiger was not so lucky.

"He reverted to his training," Mayo said. "He dropped low during the blast, and caught less shrapnel than he could have. Within seconds, he's back in front me and looking at me. We were eye to eye."

The loyal K9 survived the blast, but suffered serious injuries. He was airlifted a couple hours later to the nearest Army veterinary clinic to be treated.

It would take a full day to patch up his wounds, but the veterinary tech tried to ease Mayo's mind.

"He said 'Everything looks good,'" Mayo recalled. "When I woke up the next morning, I went to check on Tiger, and as I was rushing down the stairs from my barracks, the tech stopped me in my tracks and said, 'I'm sorry.

"It was a shock," Mayo continued, after a long, reflective pause. "The only living being you shared the

Mayo was given a short time to collect his thoughts before he was assigned a new scout dog and began a new set of missions.

"In the Vietnam War, grieving is short lived," Mayo said. "Three days later, Kelly was assigned to me. You don't get to take time off. You get a day, and then life starts again.

"There's grieving, and you still remember, but then you and your new dog have about two weeks to establish a rapport."

The new scout dog, Kelly, would serve alongside Mayo for the rest of the soldier's tour of duty.

Mayo recalls him fondly, as well.

"Kelly was much more protective than Tiger," Mayo said. "Sentry dogs are trained for aggression, but Kelly was a scout dog. Of scout dogs, maybe 50-60% would have an expressed aggression trait.

"Even in the field, I would have to give a briefing to other soldiers and say, 'Don't come near me without getting my attention, first.'"

Even if someone walks away for just a few minutes, Mayo recalled with a chuckle, they would lose their "security clearance" with Kelly.

"There's even a line for these dogs that, if I was incapacitated, especially in the field, the dog would not let you near me," Mayo said. "You'd have to kill him. And (other soldiers) knew

"That was a constant fear, you know? That if I was rendered unconscious, I would wake up somewhere later and he'd be dead."

Their memory lives on Once he finished his tour, Mayo would never see Kelly again. He returned to the U.S. and reassimilated himself into society.

Mayo attended Midlands Tech, then Clemson University, where he earned a bachelor's in Recreation Park Administration in 1976. He began working for the U.S. Postal Service in 1978 and eventually retired from the position.

Mayo eventually got married and had two children.

His 36-year-old daughter, Christie, works as a virologist in the laboratories at the Colorado State

Michael, his son, is 34, and runs a tubing business on the West Columbia side of the Congaree River.

Even with more than 45 years' worth of life competing for space in his mind, the memories of Tiger and Kelly are still vividly present in Mayo today.

"There's not a day that goes by without thinking about both dogs," Mayo said. "Not a single day."

Mayo's reflections on serving in the Army with Tiger and Kelly were mostly good memories.

That is, until he learned a horrifying truth.
