Rich-Lex 5 holds 1st-ever in-district band exhibition

High school football wouldn't be the same without the drums, brass and woodwinds in the stands.

Without question, marching bands are an integral part of the Friday Night Lights experience, but what people often don't know is how much work goes into it.

"I'll put any one of my students against any of the football players" when it comes to endurance, said Dutch Fork Band Director Paul Clayton.

"I've got football players in the band now that admit to how much more physically demanding this is."

Clayton is one of three band directors in RichlandLexington School District 5 that will be taking his team to the district's first ever joint exhibition at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10 at the Dutch Fork High School football stadium.

At that meeting, Dutch Fork's marching band will be joined by ensembles from Irmo and Chapin high schools.

Clayton said it's an opportunity to smooth out the details in the bands' execution.

"For one, it's about bands supporting each other," he said. "And two, it's a chance to perform without being judged, which is great for firsttimers."

"It helps us realize community, in a way, that while we're not exactly the same, we're still doing the same thing," said Clio Lang, a 16-year-old junior saxophonist in the Dutch Fork band.

"There are always these band moments that we share together, a lot of empathy and commiseration."

In competitions, marching bands are judged on three criteria: the music, the visual component and the overall effect.

When it comes to preparing for a competition, Clayton said it all starts with a theme.

Once a theme is chosen, the staff choose what pieces will be performed.

"If it's hard, it's hard; if it's not, it's not," he said. "The music is all based on the theme, but playing this music while moving makes it much more difficult."

At the exhibition, two bands watch while the third performs.

Clayton said there will also be two adjudicators — or clinician judges — for each school, helping during rehearsals, critiquing the bands and offering input.

The judges will be coming from all over the Southeast.

Clayton said he and the other band directors — Roger Simpson of Irmo High and Kevin Hebert of Chapin High — also benefit from the exhibition.

"We get along quite well," he said. "This exhibition also gives us the chance to bounce ideas off each other."

Clayton said his students and the band family are amped up for the event.

"This is the first time we've done this at District 5, so we're really excited," he said.

Gates open at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 per person and concessions will be available.

Haute Dog Lady finds her calling G

isela Klöss talked last week about her life in Romania and Germany before coming the United States on an athletic scholarship to play volleyball at S.C. State University. She runs two businesses, the Haute Dog Lady and ProEtiCo – Protocol & Etiquette Consulting.

In this interview, she answers Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bellune’s questions about her life and passion for business.

Q. How do you help people with your consulting business?

A. When I was a junior in college, we had a speaker every Wednesday.

After the class we were able to connect with the speakers over lunch.

David Evans, who has not only been a great mentor but became my American father over the years, came to speak about business etiquette.

After lunch he commented on my excellent dining skills.

I didn’t understand what was so excellent about my dining skills seeing that that’s how we eat at home.

Over the years I’ve watched him teach and watch the attendees’ eyes lighten up.

I started holding my own classes and saw people walk out an inch taller, more confident and feeling better about themselves.

I had found my calling. In 2015 I

became a licensed, certified International Protocol & Etiquette Consultant.

When I told my parents about ProEtiCo, they asked, “What if it doesn’t work?”

I told my Mom, “Have you noticed I am careful and take time to decide what it is I am going to do. I plan. I research. I make sure the foundation is solid.

“Then I give everything I have. If I focus only 80% on plan A, I am missing 20%. Those 20% could be the difference between making and breaking it.”

Failure is not an option. Besides, when you keep walking north, and on the way you pay attention, you’ll end up at the north pole.

To me, that’s just The Law!

Q. Why is protocol important?

A. Anxiety is real. Many people do

not attend networking events because they do not know how to handle conversations.

They miss out on contracts, jobs, promotions because they have never learned what is appropriate and what’s not, how to use a fork and a knife, how to effectively communicate with other cultures, how to successfully make a great first impression.

People pay more attention to technical skills, but your social skills are the

reason you get and keep a job or get a promotion.

I love helping people become Big Fish. I help them set themselves apart, be memorable and indispensable. I envision a world in which all people feel respected, understood and professionally engaged.

Q. What would you tell young people are the three things they must do first?

A. Everything happens for a reason. You might not see it today but you will.

I had the passion, heart, talent and height to play professional volleyball — and a completely damaged knee. At 22, I was told I actually need a full knee transplant.

I cursed. I cried. I was angry. But, if I had a healthy knee I would have pursued a volleyball career and might not have ended up doing what I am doing now.

And I am completely in love with being able to help people feel more confident about themselves.

To become truly happy, you have to make yourself happy.

Otherwise you’ll be a slave to circumstances, dependent on others and never fully in control of your own life.

Heirlooms are special because of our ancestors who owned them

M

any of you will recognize the look of the porcelain plate featured here. It is of an iconic form made popular at the turn of the century; particularly in South Carolina. I can recall, as I am sure you can, seeing a plate such as this in the cabinets and kitchens of nearly all my aunts and grandmothers.

This type of plate was made circa 1890-1900 and is called a cake plate. It was used for serving slices of the ever-popular and time-honored fruit cake that graced the tables of so many on into the 1950’s. This use made this plate something that stayed around; it never went out of fashion and is as popular now as when it was crafted. It is the perfect size, not too big, not too small; just the right size to imply generosity and civility.

What makes this cake plate even more special is that Amy, the Lexington owner, knows just who it belonged to in her family. The photo next to the plate is of this ancestor; who would

have been a bride at just the right time for this cake plate to be a gift to her, a gift to cherish and be cared for throughout her life. Amy was kind enough to share with me that the ancestor pictured here bears a striking resemblance to a family member of her current generation.

It would be hard for me to resist using the plate in honor of my relative, sharing with the next generation the grace and ease such a piece brings to the table top. It can be used for many things other than fruit cake or simply placed in a cabinet to evoke memories and add beauty.

Transferware decorated porcelain such as this does more much than transfer a decorative appeal; it transfers the emotion and family ties that bind us to what once was.

couple weeks ago, I wrote about the growing cyber-bullying problem.

This seems to hang on how much access teenagers have to the internet.

Pew Research Center did a study in 2015 that showed 92% reported going online daily with 24% of those saying they are on it almost constantly.

With computers, tablets and phones kids are able to be connected whenever they want. This gives them more and more opportunities for problems to arise.

However, the problem with technology addiction is more widespread.

According to a poll by SecurEnvoy, 70% of women and 61% of men have some sort of separation anxiety

when without their phones.

Twelve percent actually report using their cellphone in the shower.

Can a text or phone call really not wait the 20 minutes it takes you to shower?

The problem even shows up at dinners. Restaurants around the country are implementing “no cellphone” policies.

They go so far as to put in signal jammers or offer discounts to those who drop their phone at the hostess station.

Self-inflicted problem What does this mean for teenagers?

The Pew study showed that 71% of teens use more than one social network site, which means they’re getting multiple exposures to those who could harass them.

My 11-year-old has her own cellphone. I am really happy to say that she doesn’t seem addicted.
