I’m sure you’ve heard the term “the cloud”.

It is very common in today’s world to hear about something being on the cloud. What exactly does that mean?

The cloud refers to anything that runs off the internet instead of your computer. When you watch Netflix it is via the cloud.

Streaming music from Spotify is via the cloud.

Gmail, Yahoo, Apple iCloud, Google Drive, and Dropbox are all examples of programs that are cloud services.

While cloud services have become popular in the last decade it is not a new idea.

It has been used since the earliest computers.

Where it began The idea is to use several hundred computers, or servers, to handle the computing power needed to run the services.

The main idea came from wanting to store files in one spot and access them from anywhere. That has become a universal want in the technology world.

When files are stored in the cloud it creates an almost automatic backup of all files. You won’t have to worry about trying to keep backups of files on discs or drives.

Carbonite and other services take advantage of this. They are cloud-based backup service, that takes all wanted files and backs them up onto servers that are anywhere in the world.

We can share documents easier. For Google Drive, you can share a document and anyone who is allowed can access and even change the document. All changes are automatically saved and can be accessed

by anyone allowed access at any time.

What about safety?

Safety has always been — and always will be — an issue. We worry that anyone can access these servers and steal our documents. While yes, this may not be too hard but it is a lot of trouble for personal documents that have little or no value to a hacker.

Make sure your valuable financial data is secure.

However, for backups of work documents, a digital Fort Knox won’t be necessary.

Cloud computing is relied on heavily. It is a bit different to run everything

It was a dual for the ages which stretched over two days at Cecil Woolbright Stadium.

By the time the dust settled, quarterbacks Logan Bailey of Chapin and Chance Walker of Swansea had combined for 15 touchdowns and 970 yards of offense.

Bailey would one-up Walker in fitting fashion - scoring his eight touchdown on the game-winning 2-yard run in overtime to lift the undefeated Eagles to a 63-60 win. He finished 15-25 passing for 349 yards and four touchdowns and rushed 19 times for 141 yards and four scores.

Walker had a career day with 360 rushing yards on 24 carries and six touchdowns to go with 10-16 passing for 120 yards and the touchdown that forced overtime.

Chapin dominated the first half in jumping out to a 29-15 lead. Bailey’s running and success finding Evan Estridge (5 receptions, 155 yards, 2 TDs) and Joe Flowers (6 receptions, 145 yards, 2 TDs) helped the Eagles take control.

Walker rallied the Tigers with long touchdown runs as part of a 21-point outburst which put them ahead 36-29 in the fourth quarter. Chapin answered for the first of three ties as Bailey and Walker continued to trade scores.

Walker finished with a career-best 360 rushing yards on 24 carries and six

touchdowns. He also completed 10-16 passes for 120 yards and a score. Despite the loss, Walker shares this week’s Thursday Morning Quarterback award with now two-time honoree Bailey.

Hit and Run Jasper was driving down a country road; late one night when he felt a big thud. He got out of the car and looked around, but the road was empty.

As I stand on the cusp of retirement after thirty years as a pediatrician, I find myself craning my neck to see backwards to where it all started.

I also find myself standing on tiptoe to look the other direction to try to imagine what my colleauges will see when their tum to retire comes.

Lighting the darkness while on the way to bed

T

his lovely silver chamber stick was an essential element of any home before the use of gas lamps and, later, electricity. It would have been used to safely move throughout the house when darkness fell.

This one is heavily decorated with a beautiful motif of embossed flowers and leaves. This method of decorating metal by striking it from underneath is very attractive. It was made famous by the Kirk Silver Company of Baltimore, yet it existed as a decorative technique more than a century earlier.

The rectangular tray features a center socle which would hold a rather chubby beeswax or tallow candle. The center set socle is not calibrated, as at the time of manufacture candles were shaped by dipping and by hand. A candle would have been added when it was still a little soft, allowing it to form to the size of the socle that would hold it.

Present still is the snuffer that was used to extinguish the flame. This piece was essential as one would want to avoid blowing hot wax or tallow onto the surfaces of furniture and bed linens.

Now used primarily as a decoration,

It is fun for all of us old guys to think back to the "bad old days," like charging twelve dollars for an office visit, being on call every other night and not having to hire "an insurance girl" because nobody had insurance. There were days in the winter where I would see fifty patients and then head for the hospital where the challenge, at least once a week, was to actually save a child's life. The most virulent illnesses were the various bacterial causes of meningitis, epiglottitis and pneumonia. Sadly, we did not always win and children routinely died in spite of the best care we could provide at the time.

Happily, these are the same diseases that are prevented by the current armamentarium of immunizations. Will this be the mark of success for my compatriots going forward? Coming home to say, "Dear, I talked another hesitant parent into getting their baby immunized on schedule today."

It may not have the cache of a spinal tap, but it saves the same life, without the risks and drama. It is funny the incidents that stay with you, like the time 10 years ago. A grandmother, or so she identified herself, came up to me in Publix and said, "Dr. Reynolds, you won't remember me, but I just have to say that you were right." I asked of course what it was I was right about, but she only said, "I can't go into all that."

And she walked away. Perhaps being right, at least once, is not a bad epitaph for a thirty year career.I opened the office in Lexington because most families were driving to Columbia for pediatric services in 1988.

That did not seem right to me, so I became the first pediatrician in the town of Lexington. Some of you have followed Lexington Pediatric Practice from our first location on Old Chapin Road to the office behind Sonic and to our current location. Many of my new patients over the last few years have been second generation patients, which is a special testimonial to loyalty. I leave you in the capable hands of the best professionals and the best people, it has been my pleasure to work with.

My last day is set for October 2nd.

I must close with a sincere declaration of appreciation for each and all of my twenty thousand patients (give or take a few). It has been a great ride and I credit you with keeping me young and on my toes for so long. All of the memories cannot be happy ones, but none of them are "bad," because they make up the fabric of my life, and I wouldn't change a thing.
