A history on preserving food: How local settlers did things Food preservation is something we don’t’ think about today.

We have grocery stores, freezers, refrigerators, and expiration dates, but our ancestors didn’t have it so easy.

Preservation

The ancient people preserved their meat, beans, milk, butter, fruit and vegetables by various methods.

A 22-pound round chunk of bog butter believed to be 2,000 years old was found in Ireland.

Meat was very important to preserve.

The ancient people who lived in cold environments just froze everything and when they needed to eat the caribou or seal, they just took the frozen meat, filled up the ol’ fire pit with wood, and cooked it till it was done.

Food preservation in the old and ancient days was a mammoth task, which brings me to a question: How did the ancient man eat a mammoth?

The answer is simple: one small strip of meat jerky at a time.

West Columbia completes repair of Riverwalk

The southern section of West Columbia’s Riverwalk has been reopened.

It been closed since it was damaged in the flood of October 2015.

“We are very pleased to have this final portion of one of our city’s most valuable assets fixed and ready for our residents and all guests to use,” said Jamie Hook, West Columbia public works director.

“It has been a long process, but it is gratifying to get to this point. I’m sure the users will be pleased to see all of Riverwalk fixed.”

At the West Columbia City Council meeting, Sept. 5, Tara Greenwood, the city’s director of

grants, said all of Riverwalk from the Moffatt Street entrance to Phase II of the Cayce Riverwalk is open.

She said Phase II of the damaged Cayce Riverwalk could reopen by the end of the year.

The effort to repair the popular riverside trail was hampered by the permitting by more river flooding in September 2016 from Hurricane Matthew.

The City of West Columbia completed a new boardwalk under the Gervais Street Bridge in April.

The Riverwalk Amphitheater was resurfaced with concrete in the last month.

The City of West Columbia is situated along eight miles of trict that is a block away from the lower Saluda and Congaree the river at State and Meeting Rivers. The Riverwalk is a draw streets. to the dining and shopping disThe city has been directing at-

tention to economic development recently with an effort to attract business start-ups and relocations.

With the proximity of the river, West Columbia is able to offer kayaking, canoeing, tubing, and water-front concerts.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 356.57 (full pool is 360.00), and water temperatures have dropped into the lower 80s. Clarity is still good.

After an extremely successful Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Murray, a parade of anglers rotated through offshore spots, often loaded up with cane piles, and throwing topwater baits including pencil poppers, Spooks, flukes and more to draw up suspended bass or target actively busting fish.

Anglers new to this technique who followed the action online, or who followed in a boat and were actually able to mark waypoints, thought they would also be able to match the 20-pound sacks caught during the event.

In the weeks following the tournament it has become apparent that, while the offshore suspended pattern has now gone mainstream, Lake Murray in late summer is still tough.

The FLW anglers (and

locals fishing around the same time) hit a really good week for a variety of reasons, but weights have dropped significantly since then.

Some of the best anglers on the lake fished a roughly 50-boat benefit tournament recently, and only about 20 anglers weighed in.

The winning anglers were Andrew Allen and Chris Vickery from Greenwood, and they won the event with a weight in the 17s. They caught five fish all day on three cane piles, showing that the pattern is certainly still there, but don't expect to catch 20 pounds every time you do it.

One other pattern is about to come online. The shallow bite is still off, but as the fall progresses expect more fish to be caught on buzzbaits around the bank.

In the Oakley Big Bass Tournament on Sept. 23-24, expect some of the better fish to

be caught this way.

In striped bass news, Captain Brad Taylor (803331-1354) reports that with cooling water temperatures the pattern has started to change a little.

The bulk of the fish are still being caught on down rods fishing live herring, but the depth range is now 40-80 feet.

The shallower end of that range has more small fish. There is also some schooling on the lower end, and locating these

fish is simply a matter of keeping your eyes open.

These same fish are also being caught on free-lines fished out over open water when they are not busting on the surface.

Right now, the bulk of the better fish are in the main water between Shull Island and the dam, and as you start to go back in the creeks you can locate plenty of smaller ones.

Before long, bigger fish will start to go into the creeks following threadfin shad schools.

On the crappie front, Brad reports that with cooling temperatures fish should be starting to turn back on.

Like the striper, they will be pushing back into creeks to eat small threadfin shad, and that means right now you should look in the mouths of creeks up the lake around brush.

Ten feet down over about 15-20 feet is a good place to start.

Fish will also be found around deeper docks in the 15-foot range.

In catfish news, Captain William Attaway (803924-0857) reports that 30 feet continues to be a good depth range to target during the day, while at night

15-25 feet is a good range.

Fish will be found off long points and humps, and fishing the deeper side of channel buoys on the lake is a good bet.

Dip baits are hard to beat although the herring bite has also been picking up.

‘Battle of the Dam’ highlights mid-season action

In the blink of an eye, the South Carolina high school football season is at midway.

Not only does it mean every Chronicle Country team is in full-fledge region play, but also at the crossroads.

Such is the case with Friday’s annual “Battle of the Dam” matchup at W.C. Hawkins Stadium between Lexington and Irmo.

Just two weeks ago, both teams were among the undefeated quartet out of Region 5-5A with Spring Valley and White Knoll.

Now, both teams are coming off region-opening losses and need a win to keep pace with the unbeaten Vikings.

“After this week, other than White Knoll (who open region play Friday against Spring Valley), half the region is 1-0, half the region is 0-1,” Lexington head coach Perry Woolbright said.

“So next week, it’s kind of when you kind of start seeing separation. Some will go to 2-0, some will go to 0-2, some will go to 1-1. So next week is a big game for us to get back on track where we need to be (in the region).”

“Yes, it is a must win for us also,” Irmo head coach Reggie Kennedy said. “You can’t afford to loss two region games in this region and have a

chance to win a region championship.”

The Wildcats (3-2, 0-1) and Yellow Jackets (4-1, 0-1) lost by near-similar margins. Irmo fell behind 21-0 at Blythewood before losing their first game of the season 21-7, a contest which saw the Bengals control the ball in the second half with a 21-play, 12 minute, 19 second drive.

“Our team is still confident that we can achieve our goal of winning a region championship,” Kennedy said. “We got to do a better job defensively of stopping the run and getting off the field on third downs. “ One night later, Lexington was limited to 81 total yards by the Vikings’ defense led by top linebacker prospect Channing Tindall in falling 207 for their second straight loss.

Furry Friends Was It an Accident or Not?

I

recently attended a veterinary conference and attended several lectures on cats. One of the lectures was on feline house soiling and another on the aging feline. I want to go over some of the more important points from those lectures.

I will start with feline house soiling which is one of the major reasons cats are relinquished to shelters. Urine soiling and urine spraying are two different things. Urine spraying is a way cats mark territory and is usually done by intact males or late neutered males. If an early neutered male or female is urinating outside the litter box, he or she is having a problem. To know when there is a prob-

lem you have to know what is normal. Normal urine production for a cat is about 15 mls or 1 tablespoon per pound per day. If you are using clumping litter the average size of the urine spot is about two inches. Most cats will have 1-2 bowel movements per day though some cats are regular even though they go every other day.

If your cat is soiling in the house, medical problems should be eliminated first.

A urinary tract infection, feline idiopathic cystitis, stones, crystals, increased thirst and urination due to disease, disease causing constipation, degenerative joint disease, or any disease causing pain can affect how your cat is going to the bathroom.

Feline idiopathic cystitis can be a waxing and waning problem and can be acute or chronic. Your cat seems to be having issues with urination and then it seems to resolve only to return. Stress actually is an important component of this disease.

What causes stress for

your cat can be very different from what you think should be causing stress.

House soiling can result from changes in your cat’s routine, environment, diet, or changes in people in the household. Inter-cat aggression and territorial aggression can stress your cat. The feline family dynamics are very important to your cat.

Sometimes the problem can be a combination of medical and behavioral issues. Your veterinarian can help you figure out which you may be dealing with or if both are present. I will give you some tips on dealing with the stress factor.

Consider the litter box situation in your home. You should always have 1 more litter box than the number of cats. They should be placed in different places in the home and on different levels in a multi-level house.

Placing 2 or 3 litter boxes in one room doesn’t count as your cat sees this as only 1 litter box. Most cats prefer unscented clumping litter.

If your cat is going outside the box, then you should try some different textured litter. The size of the box matters as does the location.

Older cats may need a box with a low side to make getting in and out of the box easier. Cats usually prefer an open litter box versus a covered one. Location is important as it need to be in a quiet area out of the flow of traffic. Keep the litter box clean as your cat prefers a clean toilet too.

Environmental enrichment is very important. If possible you would like to put the hunt back into meal time. You can use the internet to research food puzzles for cats. If you don’t have dogs, you can use something as simple as a cut up egg carton to hide kibble around the house. Food bowls should be at least 3 feet apart and ideally there should be a barrier between the food dishes so the cats can eat in peace.

Play time is important for your cat. Try to create opportunities for play and invest in cat toys. You make find you have to rotate the toys to keep your cat inter-

ested. Provide scratching resources for your cat in a variety of locations such as in front of windows, near where your cat sleeps, near that expensive couch, etc.

The resources should be at a variety of angles and heights and made of a variety of material.

Royal Canin and Hills both make prescription diets (RC Calm, RC SO Calm, Hill’s CD Stress) to help manage stress in your cat.

The diets are different so if one doesn’t work consider trying the other one. Ideally try and feed more canned food if possible so that the

urine is more diluted.

If your cat is in pain and this is contributing to the problem of house soiling, then you should talk with your veterinarian. Next month I will discuss the aging feline and tips to help make the golden years more golden.

midnight on Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, the bomber surfaced.

B-25 rescue anniversary recalls hurricane that threatened recovery

A dozen years ago, another September hurricane caused a delay in a water rescue many Chronicle readers still recall vividly.

They idled their boats, watched and waited.

They lined the banks of Lake Murray for any sign of movement on the water’s surface.

This time 12 years ago Hurricane Ophelia had started a slow loop, threatening the already inprogress efforts to rescue what had been dubbed the Lake Murray bomber.

Ophelia roiled — and muddied — the lake waters where divers were working nearly around the clock to set lifting straps beneath a WWII Mitchell bomber that had been resting on the lake floor for 60 years.

Slated to surface was a fabled B-25 that had ditched April 4, 1943, sinking in only seven minutes into 150 feet of water — at that time too deep to be rescued.

When Dr. Robert Seigler, founder of the Lake Murray B-25 rescue project, began his decade-long efforts to locate the plane, the only surviving member of the plane’s crew was Hank Mascall.

A continent away, Mascall was willing and able to add to the search — by phone from his home in Portland, Oregon.

Mascall, in 1943, was navigator bombardier instructor at Columbia Army Air Base (now Columbia Metropolitan Airport).

Because Mascall had not been scheduled to be on that training mission, he was dressed to instruct, not to fly.

He had run to the plane to complete a mission’s required crew number — with his Garrison hat in hand.

When an engine cut out over Lake Murray and the pilot had to ditch the plane, Mascall escaped, but his hat was left behind on the dash in the cockpit.

By the time Mascall retired in 1982 from a career in Oregon education administration, Robert Seigler had become intrigued by the plane and its fate.

During weekends, holidays, and summers spent at the Seiglers’ Lake Murray cottage, young Seigler had nearly memorized author Coy Bayne’s accounts published in “Lake Murray Legend and Leisure.”

had swallowed up.

Technology had improved dramatically over the six decades since that plane lost power, then altitude.

Although Mascall and Seigler never met in person, they communicated, sharing zeal for getting the plane on dry land again.

By 1993, the plane’s location had been pinpointed thanks to help from a U.S. Naval Sonar Unit.

State archaeologist Bruce Rippeteau wisely advised the B-25 rescue team to leave the plane where

it was until a recovery plan could be worked out and a museum home could be secured.

Rippeteau also advised the rescue team to hold the plane’s location in strictest confidence to prevent pilferage by artifact seekers.

A little more than a decade passed while Seigler worked on the plane’s rescue plan and searched for a museum home.

Seigler and Mascall spoke by phone a number of times.

Despite ardent overtures and expressed interest, no museum in

South Carolina had space or other necessary resources to accept the plane.

Ultimately, the Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham, Alabama, made the commitment to receive and display the aircraft.

Just shy of midnight on Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, the bomber surfaced.

As soon after the “landing” as possible, efforts to examine contents began.

A few days later, Mascall took a

phone call at his Oregon home.

“Sir, we found your hat.”

The leather brim of the Garrison as well as the hat’s rusted emblem were among items found — along with a thermos of coffee, a copy of The State newspaper dated the day of the ditching, and many other artifacts.

West Columbia makes most of river, its most valuable asset

Though modern structures line both sides, the river that runs through West Columbia evokes a timeless sense.

Moving across the clean, clear water on the rapids, with scenic beauty and the smell of the outdoors, it’s easy to imagine how earlier generations must have felt where three rivers converge.

Today, that site is home to West Columbia’s Riverwalk. Its official name is the Wyman M. “Mac” Rish Riverwalk and Amphitheater.

“These three rivers have always been vital to life,” said West Columbia Mayor Bobby Horton. He was referring to where the Saluda and Broad rivers meet to form the Congaree.

Because of the importance of the river, Horton said it is imperative to provide entry points to the city’s most valued natural resource.

Nowhere is access to the river more available than in West Columbia.

“We don’t have a beach, the ocean or the mountains, but we have this river. And there are so many recreational activities available on the river,” said Horton.

“We want to share the river as much as we can.”

Horton is pleased that so many residents come to the river so frequently.

He also said the river is an attraction for out-of-town visitors.

Gregg Pinner, president and CEO of the Greater Cayce-West Columbia Chamber of Commerce and John Banks, the chamber’s tourism director, said access to the river has been a game-changer.

Banks said West Columbia’s river access is a “huge advantage” in the effort to attract tourists.

“It’s our No. 1 asset,” said Banks. “People come for the river sports and then they can enjoy our restaurants and antique district.”

He said the Riverwalk attracts a high-volume of out-of-town visitors.

Pinner said offering river access has had a far-reaching affect.

“We used to be divided from the other side of the river,” he said. “Riverwalk has eliminated that divide.

It has changed the perception and helped foster strong and positive relationships.”

Pinner also said the Chamber’s Rhythm on the River spring and fall concerts at the Riverwalk Amphitheater are possible because city leaders had the

vision to develop access to the river.

Pinner and Banks also pointed out that Riverwalk is safe because the City of West Columbia has a ranger to patrol it.

It has not always been that way.

Many in West Columbia, who were reared on the banks of the river, will tell you that the river was a big part of their lives in their formative years. But kudzu and undergrowth were a barrier.

Columbia recently as children wade in the water of the Congaree River.

Former West Columbia Councilman Eric Fowler, who retired from council in 2015, grew up in West Columbia’s New Brookland Mill Village.

Both of his parents – like so many others- were employees of the Mt. Vernon Mill. Fowler said he remembers going to the Dixie movie theater on State Street as a child in the 1940s to see cowboy movies.

In the 1950s, Fowler was overseas in the Navy

during the Korean War. When he was away, Fowler said many times his mind would wander to his house on Carpenter Street.

Fowler also said, growing up, he had the Congaree River next to his home, as a playground.

“I remember boys, bigger than me, when I was a child, in the river pulling out cannon balls,” Fowler said.

Those cannon balls were said to be a prod-

uct of The Civil War bombardment of Columbia from the river’s banks.

The river as a focal point in West Columbia has not changed, but the use of the resource is evolving.

Michael Mayo has operated Palmetto Outdoors for more than 10 years.

The business offers tubing and kayaking excursions down the river.

Riverwalk is a loading point. Mayo said he was a taught a respect for the river by his father when he was a child.

The river has enabled Mayo’s life’s work.

He has spoken in front of West Columbia City Council and told them that people come from Ohio, New York, Florida, and many other states, to West Columbia, in order to enjoy a float down the river.

He also conducts education tours along Riverwalk for Lexington School District Two students in the late fall and winter, outside of tubing season.

Mayo is just one example.

Horton said so much positive has flowed from the vision of West Columbia’s leadership to make its piece of the river available to so many.

Napoleon and Louis Armstrong: Connecting dots from a rescue attempt that almost happened

E

very so often, history offers a story where amazing characters interact with one another so unbelievably, you know it has to be true.

This is one of them.

Napoleon Bonaparte was in a serious funk in early 1821.

For five long years, the man who once ruled Europe from the Spanish plains to the steppes of Russia had been a captive of the British.

They kept him permanently exiled on St. Helena, a volcanic hunk of rock in the South Atlantic some 2,500 miles from Argentina.

It was as close to the End of the Earth as you could get. Just to be on the safe side, British warships were anchored nearby.

Napoleon wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Until Nicolas Girod decided to step in.

Girod passionately loved everything associated with France. Born in Frenchspeaking Savoy, he and his brothers moved to the New World and settled in (where else?) New Orleans.

Girod made lots of money in various business ventures and was well-liked. So it was no surprise when he became the Crescent City’s first popularly-elected mayor in 1812.

His inauguration ceremony was conducted in French, because he refused to learn English.

When someone pointed out he was the only mayor of a major U.S. city who didn’t speak English, he replied the other mayors should learn French.

Though Napoleon Bonaparte died before it could happen, a passionate admirer by the name of Nicolas Girod planned

(which for many years was the city’s largest) was meant to be a haven for Napoleon once he arrived there. Final details were put in place and the mission was just about to set sail.

Then, without warning, Napoleon died on May 5, 1821.

With no former emperor to rescue, Girod’s plan fell apart. Many of Lafitte’s pirates eventually made their way to the Galveston, Texas, area where loose law enforcement allowed them to resume their illegal business.

Nicolas Girod was a very rich man when he died in 1840. He was a very generous man, too, for he left nearly $150,000 dollars to establish homes to care for New Orleans’ needy children.

He had been exposed to music earlier and enjoyed playing the trumpet and eventually joined the home’s band.

Girod never rescued the emperor he adored.

But in a way, he did leave a different, unintended legacy.

We’ll never know what brilliant schemes Napoleon may have hatched while on our soil.
