Wine on the River Wrap-Up

This summer, work began on the Swansea Community Wellness Path and Garden at LMC’s Swansea Community Medical Center. Funded through an internal grant, the project included landscaping, a paved sidewalk and track, picnic tables, and a community garden that is maintained by the Center’s employees.

At 95 years of age, Mrs. Dorothy Hutto (pictured right) was the first person to walk around the track.

Dr. Rita Patel says, “The track has been an excellent tool that has been added to LMC-Swansea, promoting increased physical activity and a healthier lifestyle, leading to a healthier community.”

What is the truth about flossing?

rushing your teeth, rinsing with mouthwash and flossing daily have been the cornerstones of the dental home care regimen, preached by dentists and hygienists to their patients for years and years.

Despite this, over a third of Americans say that they never floss! 37.3 percent say that they only floss occasionally and about 30 percent of people say that they flossed in the past week (according to a study by CNN).

A new report, released by the Associated Press, stated that there is no evidence that flossing has any effect on oral health. The report further states that there has never been a peer reviewed study that definitively proves that flossing matters!

One study in 2011 did credit floss with a slight reduction in gum inflammation, which can sometimes develop into full fledged gum disease.

Regardless, dentists and hygienists remain adamant that all Americans should floss daily. Just going a couple of days without flossing will cause enough plaque build up between the teeth, and over time, the plaque hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental hygienist or dentist. Brushing and rinsing with mouthwash can only remove a fraction of the plaque build up on teeth, and very little between the teeth, which is where decay and gum disease problems start and flourish.

brief for a cavity or gum disease to develop.

Bacteria that cause gum disease and cavities hide in the area between the teeth and under the gums. Your toothbrush can not reach between teeth, and can only extend a small amount under the gums. Flossing is the best way to get between your teeth and under the gum, what the dentist calls “the sulcus”.

If the plaque hardens in the sulcus, it becomes tartar, or what we call “calculus”. This isn’t the same calculus you may have struggled with in high school. But it is a struggle to remove from your teeth.

It harbors bacteria and causes the gum to be irritated and then infected.

This infection causes the gums and bone to recede around the teeth, teeth to become loose, and your breath to become noticeably bad.

But there are other diseases that are associated with gum disease. Did you know Alzheimers, heart disease and diabetes are all associated with and worsened in patients with gum disease? In pregnant women, gum disease is linked to preterm labor and low birth weight.

and tartar harbored in the mouth has appeared in the patient’s bloodstream and attached to heart lining. This is just one example of how gum disease can cause other disease to worsen!

So, what is a dental patient to do?

We have always preached regular hygiene recare appointment. For many people, especially younger folks, twice a year is a good regimen to visit the hygienist. But for many older patients, or patients who have a lot of dental work (crowns, bridges, fillings or implants), a more frequent recare regimen is best… maybe every three months, to keep from developing problems. Most people who have had a history of gum problems and treatment really need to visit the hygienist every three months.

But no matter how often you visit the dentist and hygienist, what you do at home in between appointments is more important. Your daily regimen!

And your daily regimen has to include complete cleaning and plaque removal between your teeth at least once a day.

You see, plaque hardens in your mouth over a period of 24 hours. Then, only the hygienist can remove the tartar from your teeth. So, expert flossing once a day is mandatory to remove the plaque between your teeth.

When we say “expert flossing” we mean using the proper technique. Wrapping the floss around the teeth, and manipulating the floss under the gums is the correct way to do this.

Most involve questions frequently asked by clients.

The key answer here is to make sure the information you are reading is trustworthy.

You want the recommendations about medical advice to come from a licensed practicing veterinarian.

You should also check at least two if not more sources for your information.

If the same advice is given at multiple sites, it is most likely legitimate. Most websites for veterinary hospitals will have information on many topics or links to helpful websites.

If the advice you are reading comes at the expense of making other veterinarians look bad, read it with caution.

Most veterinary professionals will present new and important information without making others look bad or telling you your veterinarian is harming your pet.

If the information you are reading looks like it belongs in a tabloid, it probably isn’t the right advice.

If you feel it seems too incredible to believe, you are probably right.

When getting information from the internet, unless it is a legitimate site such as dvm360.com or the avma.org, remember that there isn’t anyone making sure it is true.

However, veterinarians are less likely to recommend a service you don’t need or spread rumors as it can put their medical license at risk.

If you have a question about something you read on the internet, the best thing to do is to call your veterinarian to get all the facts.

Intestinal parasites I would like to clear up some misconceptions.

Indoor cats can get worms.

About 15% of plant potting soil contains hookworm or roundworms eggs or both.

When your cat gets into the plants, he or she is exposing themselves to parasites. This is why you should also wear gloves whenever you work with potting soil, as you are at risk too.

Cats can also get tapeworms by swallowing infected fleas when grooming themselves.

The cat will pass segments which often look like rice in the stool.

from your dog as dogs do not get pinworms. People get the highly contagious pinworms from other people.

Pet rabbits or horses can have pinworms, but you will not get them from the rabbit or horse. Pinworms are specific for each species.

Even if the stool looks normal, it doesn’t mean parasites are not present.

Don’t get lulled into thinking that your pet doesn’t have worms or doesn’t need to be checked for worms.

Even a negative stool sample does not 100% rule out intestinal parasites.

This is because your pet is not shedding the eggs with every stool. Regular stool exams are the best way to find the parasites as the more that are done; the more you increase your chance of finding parasites.

The one thing that does help is to have your pet on a heartworm preventative that helps control intestinal parasites. This will prevent your pet from developing any serious infection and help protect you too.

Pets don’t carry bedbugs or lice. Bedbugs are an environmental problem and are very unlikely to infect a dog or cat.

For head lice or crab lice the transmission is strictly from person to person.

Cockroaches are carriers of worms. They can carry the stomach worm which can infect your pet if they eat the roach. Roundworms can also be found on the outside of the roach which can infect your pet when they eat the roach.

There is also research that indicates that feline asthma may be associated with cockroach debris.

Reverse sneezing is something I see with one of my dogs and many clients observe it with their own pet.

A reverse sneeze by definition is a “sudden uncontrollable and forceful inhalation of air through the nose — drawing in air as opposed to forcing air out”. It really does look worse than it is for the pet.

Your dog can’t control the reflex any more than you can control a sneeze.

Typically there will be several reverse sneezes in a row instead of just one sneeze.

It is felt dogs feel a “tickle” in their nose before the sneeze just like we do before a normal sneeze.

is likely a reflex action brought on by irritation or inflammation. Nasal polyps, small benign growths in the nasal passage, can cause reverse sneezing.

Reverse sneezes can also be caused by nasal masses, foreign bodies such as grass blade or plants, allergies, or infections. Dog noses go in many places. Usually you don’t need to be alarmed by the reverse sneezing.

However, chronic recurrent problems with reverse sneezing should be evaluated by

your veterinarian. Be sure to bring it up with your veterinarian at any visit.

out of your pet’s visit and your visit to the veterinary hospital.

I will try and give tips to make it less stressful for all parties involved.

Dickerson Center’s Carol Yarborough is a voice for children

Carol Wyatt Yarborough keeps calm when things get out of hand.

“I can keep my head straight in a crisis,” said Yarborough, executive director of the Dickerson Children’s Advocacy Center.

She tells a story about a car accident when she was in college.

“A child on a bicycle was hit by a car,” Yarborough said.

“I calmly called EMS. It was the management of a chaotic situation. I didn’t overreact.”

Her resolve, when things seem wildly amiss, is a valuable asset.

The center has moved to Gibson Road in Lexington from West Columbia. Its mission is “to provide comprehensive assessment and treatment services to physically and sexually abused children ages 0-18 years throughout the Midlands.”

Yarborough said she initially discovered her sensibilities for control amid calamity when she was at Clemson University.

“My mom had a heart attack,” Yarborough explained, so she did what she had to do.

To help, she moved back to West Columbia and enrolled at the University of South Carolina. After graduating, Yarborough worked as a “floater” at the university. She moved from one department to another to cover for absent staff members.

“I got a pretty good overview of the university. I got to know a little about a lot,” Yarborough said.

She said she learned it takes a lot of different knowledge to succeed. She brings that together.

“We’re smarter when we work together,” Yarborough said.

Not only is cohesion needed for efficiency. In an agency that responds to abused children, moral support is a premium.

She said it’s obvious sometimes that someone at the center is struggling with emotion.

“It’s hard not to take the job home with you, but we build each other up.”

She said understanding the stress of the situations is also applied to families of victims, who are also in shock on many occasions.

Stepping back and surveying the whole of the landscape was part of the lesson Yarborough learned, before she came to the center.

She worked in sexual trauma services and with a sexual assault response team.

But at one point the weight of that exposure got really heavy.

“I needed a break,” Yarbor-

“My husband (Steve) said: ‘Your soul is dying.’ And I wanted to get back into nonprofit,” Yarborough said.

About that time Susan Shaw was planning to retire from her position as DCAC executive director. Yarborough thought her firsthand experience “in the trenches with victims” was an imperative for the job. The center’s board agreed, and in 2009 she became executive director.

Yarborough has accumulated the right mix of qualities.

In her journey, she has earned two graduate degrees, one in

She has time on the job as an administrator and training in non-profit management.

Yarborough is also well-known by those who advocate for the protection of children.

Aside from that, she is a native. She attended Saluda

River Elementary School and what was known as BC Grammar No. 4.

She also went to Northside Middle School in West Columbia. Their children are Zach and Morgan. Both are grown and married.

At Brookland-Cayce High, Yarborough was a cheerleader and the homecoming queen. She recalls a friend from those days.

“Abby Bray sponsored me on homecoming,” Yarborough said. They remained friends until the beloved educator, coach and West Columbia City Councilman died of cancer in 2013.

Yarborough still carries a voice message on her phone from Bray from just before he discovered he had terminal cancer.

Her ties to the community are strong.

“My roots are here,” Yarborough said. And she said that is important when you deal with families on such a personal level.

She also said she knows the culture of the people, and that helps her do her job. She applies what she knows and wants to have a positive affect.

“I’m proud to be a citizen, but we need to do better. I want Lexington County to be all it can be,” Yarborough said.

A contest is held in California's Napa Valley every year about this time to "Build a Better Burger." Contestants creatively cook a wide variety of "burgers" containing everything from pickled saffron pears and green curry to Spanish chorizo, pork, lamb and even Spam. While I enjoy sampling all the unusual toppings, oddly shaped burger buns and mind-boggling flavor combinations, sometimes I just want a classic, all-beef hamburger.

Ground chuck is the meat of choice for most hamburger purists. The preferred combination is 80 percent lean meat to 20 percent fat. The fat makes the burgers moist and flavorful. If the fat content is too low, your hamburger patty will dry out during the cooking process.

Combining ground chuck with other ground meats adds a delicious combination of juiciness and flavor to your burger. The top choice for making the ultimate hamburger patty is to combine ground chuck with ground sirloin. Try this great recipe to make a classic American burger!

Classic Hamburgers 1 pound ground chuck (80/20 blend) or a combination of chuck and sirloin 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1. Heat a large skillet to medium hot. The pan is at the proper temperature when a drop of water dances on its surface.

2. Place the Worcestershire sauce in a medium-size bowl.

Sorry. The keyfobs that unlock cars work off radio waves. If not near the vehicle it does nothing.

Extra battery life

Will a secret code unlock 50% battery power once a phone’s power has been drained?

No. And you will just frustrate yourself by trying it.

Microwaves

Don’t put your phone in a

microwave to recharge it.

The microwave will not interact with the battery and charge it in one minute.

Most cellphones are made of metal. Your phone will catch fire and possibly melt components inside.

Emergency Number According to some stories, you can dial 1-1-2 anywhere, and even if you don’t have a signal, you will reach emergency responders.

This isn’t true. 9-1-1 is still the emergency number for the United States and you do need to have some kind of signal to reach them.

(Making it thinner in the middle and thicker around the edges will allow the patty to cook evenly. As hamburger patties cook, they shrink in size. As they shrink, the edges tend to break apart, causing

deep cracks to form. To combat this, you want the burger patty to be thinner in the middle than around the edges.)

Season the patties on both sides with salt, pepper, onion and garlic powder.

5. Place the hamburger patties into the hot skillet. For a rare burger, cook 4 to 5 minutes on the first side, turn the patties and cook for an additional 4 to 5 minutes; for a medium burger, cook 7 to 8 minutes per side; for well-done burger, cook 8 to 10 minutes per side.

6. If desired, place a slice of cheese on each burger during the final minute of cooking.

When the cheese has melted, remove the burgers to a plate.

7. Rub the skillet with a folded paper towel to clean it.

Place the hamburger buns, cut side down, in the skillet for about 1 minute to toast them.

Serve the hamburger patties in the buns with your favorite condiments and vegetables.

CATFISH: Fair. Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reports that fan-casting a variety of baits – including dip baits and cut herring – in 10-25 feet of water has been most effective for channel catfish.

STRIPED BASS: Slow to fair. Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports

that the best fish are being caught on free-lined herring fished in the lower pool; water quality is too poor for a deep, down-line bite.

CRAPPIE: Slow to fair. Captain Brad reports that crappie are being caught on minnows fished over brush up the lake along the main river channel.
