A reader asked about computer courses in the Lexington area.

I don’t know about you, but I’m always up for more learning so I started looking for those types of classes.

The Shepherd’s Center is a faith-based organization that holds classes 3

or 4 times a year to help seniors learn about what interests them. Generally they have one or two computer courses each semester. For one fee you can take up to 3 classes a week. There are Shepherd’s Centers in Lexington and St. Andrews. The Lexington County public library holds classes at each branch. From basics on how to use your computer to advanced software use, the library has classes for just about everyone. Check each branch for specific classes and make sure to register in time. You can check the schedule here http:// www.lexpublib.org/computerclasses.

Each school district has an Adult Education program. These are geared toward getting your GED instead of a High School Diploma. Some districts

offer general computer courses. Check with your local school district to see if they have opened these classes to everyone and their specific requirements to attend.

SC Works also offers a basic computer course at their offices. SC Works helps to connect employers with qualified applicants and help those applicants learn skills to help them in their job search.

Carolina rigs and shakey head worms should also catch some fish. Crappie: Slow to fair. Down the lake crappie fishing has been slow, but up the lake some fish are being caught around main-lake brush in about 20-25 feet of water.

The high school football season enters a third week.

The lone 2-0 team right now is Chapin High School.

Three teams (Dutch Fork, Gray Collegiate and White Knoll) have an open date. The idle time could not have come at a better time for the Silver Foxes as injuries (the latest which sidelined quarterback Cole Douglas last week against Greenwood) have resulted in their first 0-2 start since 2003.

Week 2 will have three in-county matchups with Swansea at Chapin, Gilbert at Pelion and BatesburgLeesville at BrooklandCayce. Let’s hope for some more “magical” performances like the previous week.

Memory Devices Two elderly couples were enjoying friendly conversation when one of the men asked the other, “Fred, how was the memory clinic you went to last month?”

“Outstanding,” Fred replied. “They taught us all the latest psychological techniques - visualization, association - it made a huge difference for me.”

“That’s great! What was the name of the clinic?”

Fred went blank He thought and thought, but couldn’t remember.

Then a smile broke across his face and he asked, “What do you call that flower with the long stem and thorns?”

“You mean a rose?”

Raised Heart Rate As a younger man, I was in great shape. As an airline pilot, I was required to have a Flight physical every six months.

The nurse took the basic data, weight, height, and blood pressure. My pressure was good, but the heart rate was below 40 beats per minute.

“I cannot put that number down. You’ll be denied a physical,” she said.

“What can I do?” I replied.

She held my hand and winked, saying, “Just think about me for a minute!”

Boys Will Be Boys A father was teasing his daughter by suggesting she liked a certain boy in her kindergarten class.

Apprehensively, the father asked what that one thing might be.

Motel Reality Check One night at an economy motel, a business traveler called the front desk and requested a 6 a.m. wakeup call. The next morning, he awoke before 6, but the phone did not ring until 6:30.

“Good morning,” a young man said sheepishly. “This is your wake-up call.”

Annoyed, he let the hotel worker have it. “You were supposed to call me

at 6:00!” he complained.

“What if I had a milliondollar deal to close this morning, and your oversight made me miss out on it?”

“Well, sir,” the desk clerk quickly replied, “if you had a million-dollar deal to close, you wouldn’t be staying in this motel!”

Quick Dentist On vacation, a woman and her husband had to make an emergency visit to a dentist.

“I want a tooth pulled,” the woman demanded.

“And don’t bother with the Novocain either, because we’re really in a hurry. Just take out the tooth and we’ll be on our way.”

The dentist was impressed. “You’re certainly a very brave woman! Which tooth is it?”

The woman pushed her husband forward. “Show him your tooth, dear.”

Forgotten Proposal An elderly widow and widower had been dating for about five years. The man finally decided to ask her to marry him.

Elderly Worries

The ninety-five year old woman at the nursing home received a visit from one of her fellow church members.

COUCH THEATER -- DVD PREVIEWS

By Sam Struckhoff et al.) gets back into highspeed hijinks when a crazy badass (Jason Statham) pulls some evil plot that requires really good driving to foil. Dwayne Johnson returns as agent Luke Hobbs, and has fun body-slamming people and ad-libbing intimidating lines.

I got what I wanted from it -- ridiculous and awesome stunts delivered completely without irony, though it’s packaged in some silly stuff about characters I lost track of awhile ago. The movie does its duty in giving a good send-off to characters that some audiences must have grown fond of.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Cinderella” (PG) -- Disney revives its highest-profile princess in this live-action retelling that stays true to the essence of (their version of) the original fairytale. The story is familiar, but helped along by stunning visual effects, costumes and set pieces, as well as a fine performance from Lily James (TV’s “Downton Abbey”) as the hardest-working princess.

Cate Blanchett, of course, has total control over her role as the evil stepmother, and Helena Bonham Carter makes a cool fairy godmother.

While Snow White and

others have had their warrior-princess makeovers in the past few years, Disney’s lavish live-action fairy tale doesn’t try to re-write the book on princesses. Disney made an effort to be appealing to boy audiences with its recent successful princess-fable “Frozen,” but this Cinderella doesn’t shy from her DNA: She’s the prettiest proto-princess around. Director Kenneth Branagh focused on getting the classic elements right -resetting the standard for super-pretty, enchanting romanticism and virtue.

“Furious 7” (R) -- These guys have been pulling “one last job” for about four movies now, but the whole crew of temperamental street racers (Paul Walker, Vin Deisel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson,

“Love & Mercy” (PG-13) -- Brian Wilson co-founded the Beach Boys, hit the top of the charts, made a beautiful mark on rock history with his album “Pet Sounds,” and then lost himself to mental illness and drugs. This biopic doesn’t try to tell his whole life story, but focuses on two timeperiods: His ascension and creative peak in the ‘60s (played by Paul Dano at this age), and then jumping to the ‘80s, when a middleaged Wilson (John Cusack), medicated and manipulated by a psychiatrist (Paul Giamatti), falls in love (Elizabeth Banks) and tries to reclaim his life.

Even for non-fans, the movie works its drama and romance without smelling like another music history hero lesson.

“The Overnight” (R) -Two young married couples fall into funny situations after the kids are put to bed in this sitcommy romp. Al-

ex and Emily (Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling) are a nice young couple who’ve recently relocated with their boy from Seattle to Los Angeles. In a short time, they meet friendly Kurt (Jason Schwarzman), who invites the new neighbors to bring their boy over for family pizza night.

Things get weirder and

weirder, and as drinks flow, they learn about Kurt’s hole-inspired artwork and more. It’s raunchy and surprising, but I’m not sure if the humor outweighs the crushing awkwardness.

Blackened teapot had heavy use in turbulent times

T

his wonderful English tea pot came to me from a family in Columbia,South Carolina.

It was designed for heavy use during turbulent times and in less than ideal conditions.

Shaped in a bulbous, round manner yet with the handle and lid of a tankard of the same period. The lid is a stepped bee hive design with an English penny dating to 1799 impressed into the area where the finial would be.

THIS ROUND POT rests on an added rim foot that flares out slightly, acting as a ballast. A close examination reveals an impressed crest on the front side — a knight with the Prince of Wales feather atop his armored headpiece. The bust of the knight rests against a shield containing the image of three daggers;. It is quite dramatic and thought provoking.

The handle features an outward curve terminating with the typical Georgian heart form. The hinge is beautiful with a pinned construction that assures the lid its proper placement over the hot liquid found inside. The thumb piece is an open heart; mirroring the one on the end of the handle.

PERHAPS THE MOST compelling element is the form of the spout. It is the typical sort yet fashioned with the unique motif

of a pair of ginkgo leaves. This South Carolina connection is pleasing in many ways as it conveys the dual notion of proper English silver decorated with an American motif.

THE BODY OF the pot reflects the hammer of the silversmith as the pot came to life and rose in dimension. The entire surface seems to glitter in the light. The bottom third on one side is blackened from being placed directly onto fire. The robust nature of the pot allowed this treatment as average silver would collapse under such conditions. How pleasant to think of the message conveyed by the use of this pot — it set a valorous standard that other men would hope to emulate. © 2015 The Charleston Silver Lady
