PICKS OF THE WEEK Star Trek Beyond (PG-13)

—The dreaded villain Shredder (Brian Tee) has escaped, and he’s got some super-convoluted evil scheme in his metallic head.

Four deformed militant reptiles named after Renaissance artists are the only ones who can thwart this plot.

Entering the fray is Tyler Perry as a mad scientist.

He serves as the entrance for pugnacious mutated minions Bebop and Rocksteady (Gary Anthony Williams and Sheamus O’Shaughnessy).

The movie also brings in vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell) and everyone’s favorite evil interdimensional brain-blob, Krang.

If you don’t recognize all four of those last character names, you might not enjoy this very loud, distracted movie of disturbing character design.

This based-on-a-true story follows a Confederate medic who deserted the army, recruited escaped slaves and seceded from the South.

Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey) is a poor Mississippi farmer who sees how the wealthy, slave-owning landowners are able to get exemptions from military duties, while other Southerners have to fight and die so the richest few can keep their right to profit from slavery.

While the movie has an authentic look, a good story and a strong commitment from McConaughey, it’s bogged down in pacing and holds back on the heavy topics it opens up.

It goes from the early part of the war through Reconstruction and beyond, with jumps in time that don’t always make sense.

The movie goes for White Savior clichés to gloss over some of the most important moments of character development.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (R) — Young parents

Mac and Kelly (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) are about to close on their suburban home and escape their party-ridden frat-tastic neighborhood.

But the sale is threatened when a group of gals move into the place next door where Teddy (Zac Efron) and his fraternity once raged.

These girls (including Chloe Grace Moretz and Kiersey Clemmons) are just as rowdy and twice as diabolical as the boys were.

The formula hasn’t been changed much, but the selfaware jokes about sexism are sharp, and seeing Efron’s Big Man on Campus experiencing the trials of real life is fun.

— Just when exploring the vast reaches of outer space starts to get a little monotonous, Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and the Enterprise are attacked by a vicious swarm of space drones, forcing the crew to head for the escape pods.

Crash landed and separated on an alien planet, the franchise heroes must use their wits and witty banter to survive.

They also find a new ally in Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), an alien warrior who shares the same new enemy, the insidious Krall (Idris Elba, acting through layers of make up).

This third installment of the post-millennium “Star Trek” series takes a noticeable turn from the past two.

For one, the script is much lighter, funnier and truer to the sensibilities of the old show. This is thanks to writer, actor and geek paragon Simon Pegg, who co-wrote the script and plays Scotty.

Another big shift comes from director JJ Abrams passing the baton to Justin Lin, who brings plenty of experience in blockbuster-franchise ensemble-action from his work on the “Fast & Furious” series.

t. Col. Allen West is a man I admire. He grew up in Atlanta, the son of a proud World War II veteran.

He served our country for 22 years with experience in such dangerous combat zones as Iraq and Afghanistan.

He recently weighed in on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand for the National Anthem before an NFL game.

Mr. Kaepernick is biracial. He was adopted and raised by white parents. He claims America is oppressing blacks although we have had a black, biracial president, two black attorneys general and black secretary of homeland security and national security advisor.

here's a story out there that's given me a chill that just won't go away.

An elderly veteran reportedly presented himself at a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital emergency room in New York to get mental-health help, and he was turned away.

He went out to his car in the parking lot and committed suicide.

A wife no longer has her husband, three daughters no longer have their father, and seven grandchildren no longer have their grandpa.

Because it happened on federal property, the FBI is involved.

Ideally they'll get to the bottom of who turned this man away.

Two congressmen also are involved now, demanding answers.

The website for the VA facility says right on the front page: "There is always a caring mental health doctor available 24/7 in our Emergency Room."

Granted, the paragraph is talking about substance abuse, but one would think that a "caring mental health doctor" of any specialty would be able to spend some time talking to a veter-

Irmo, Lexington and River Bluff in Class 5A have more students than Chapin in Class 4A and BrooklandCayce and Gilbert in 3A. Last Saturday, the three smaller schools showed they can more than compete with their “big brothers.”

Playing on the road, the Chapin Eagles, B-C Bearcats and Gilbert Indians came away with close victories.

It started when Brookland-Cayce jumped out to a 20-0 lead on the Lexington Wildcats in their home opener.

After Lexington rallied for 21 unanswered points, the Bearcats reclaimed the lead in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Rasheed Taylor and goal line stand to save a 26-23 win and improve to 3-0.

It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

About three hours later, Chapin headed to W.C. Hawkins Stadium looking to snap an 0-4 streak against the Irmo Yellow Jackets.

After a seesaw battle, Chapin scored in the final 17 seconds to win 34-31.

The evening concluded with Gilbert defeating host River Bluff 21-17 (see Page A1 story).

Not surprisingly, the Gilbert Indian fans partied like it was “1999” – the last year the team started 3-0.

Team of the Week Dutch Fork High School The Silver Foxes were one Chronicle Country Class 5A team that had success in Week 2.

Coming off a ‘bye’ week and facing top-ranked Fort Dorchester, Dutch Fork jumped out to a 21-0 lead before winning 35-22. The win

snapped the Patriots’ 17-game winning streak dating back to the 2014 Class 4A playoffs. Ironically, the last team to defeat Fort Dorchester was Hillcrest, which beat the Silver Foxes in the Division I final.

The Silver Foxes’ defense held top quarterback prospect Dekeron Joyner, to just 59 rushing yards and a TD and 179 passing yards. However, high school rules do not allow a return on a turnover during a kickoff. Thus, the touchdown was nullified, leaving the final score 26-23 in favor of Brookland-Cayce.

A collarbone injury suffered to Gilbert starting quarterback Tyler Thomas put Strickland in the game. After a slow start, he rallied the Indians by completing 11-17 passing for 187 yards and two touchdown passes, including the game-winner to Catriez Cook from 26 yards with 1:49 left.

Stuffing can seriously perk up bland cuts of meat

H

ere's an easy way to add flavor and flair to a boneless, skinless chicken breast: stuff it!

Flavor-boosters like chopped, sauteed vegetables, herbs, cheeses or spices can turn a lean, bland cut of meat from pork to beef into something special.

During the Roman Empire, recipes for stuffing chicken, rabbit, pork and dormouse were common. Stuffing in the Middle Ages was known as "farce," from the Latin "farcire" (and the French "farcir") meaning "to stuff."

In the 13th century, lighthearted French farcirs or farce plays were "stuffed" in between lengthy religious productions to keep the audience from being bored.

"Forcemeat" and "farce" also were common terms referring to a spiced, chopped meat mixture, still in use when referring to sausage.

In 1538, the word "stuffing" first appeared in English print, but this uninspired term did not appeal to the Victorian upper class. After 1880, "stuffing" also became known as "dressing."

Today, "stuffing" is the term most often used in the South and Eastern parts of the United States. Stuffing, or dressing, is a seasoned mix of vegetables, starches and eggs that are cooked within the body cavity of an animal.

Vegetables also are hollowed out and stuffed.

When it's served as a side dish during the Thanksgiving holiday, stuffing often is referred to as dressing.

My recipe for Roasted Red Pepper Stuffed Chicken Breasts uses a savory blend of bell peppers, herbs, spices, cheeses and lemon to add a burst of flavor to lean chicken breast.

ROASTED RED PEPPER STUFFED CHICKEN BREASTS 4 chicken breasts, skinless, boneless, raw (about 6 ounces each) 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 4 ounces regular or low-fat cream cheese 1 medium lemon, juice and zest 1 jar roasted red bell peppers, packed in oil, reserve oil 8 slices Thin Provolone cheese 4 teaspoons ground flax seed 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (whole wheat or Panko) Cooking oil

1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. Spray a glass baking dish with the cooking oil. Place the chicken breast on half of a large sheet of plastic wrap on a cutting board.

Fold the plastic wrap over the chicken. Using a meat mallet (or a heavy-bottomed skillet), flatten the breast to about 1/4 inch thick. Remove the plastic. Season chicken on both sides with 1 tablespoon of the Italian seasoning, and 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and black pepper, and the cayenne pepper.

3. Mix the cream cheese with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and pepper. Remove the zest from the lemon and mix it into the cream cheese. Squeeze the lemon juice into a small bowl. Mix in the reserved oil from the roasted red

bell pepper (or use 3 tablespoons of olive oil) and set it aside.

4. Spread the cream cheese mixture across the inside of the breast.

Layer two slices of the provolone, then the roasted red pepper. Beginning at the smallest end, roll the breast up, tucking in the peppers as needed. Roll the chicken in the lemon and oil mixture.

5. Mix together the remaining 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning, the ground flax seeds and the breadcrumbs. Sprinkle the chicken with the breadcrumb mixture. Place the chicken roll, seam side down, in the baking dish. No toothpicks are needed. Repeat the layering and rolling process with the remaining chicken.

6. Drizzle any remaining lemon

and oil over the chicken to help it brown and crisp on top. Bake until chicken is cooked through (about 25 to 30 minutes) and no pink flesh remains. Makes 4 servings.

Former Lexington coach, athlete joins sports radio talk show

L

ongtime Lexington boys' basketball coach Bailey Harris has fond memories of former player and assistant coach William Gunter.

“He was a backup point guard on a state championship team in 2000,” he said.

“Had a very valuable role. He generally ran the scout team in practice. Some may take that lightly, but he always made sure the starters got pushed in practice. He was a very smart player that really understood the game.”

Harris also remembered Gunter for having a special vocal talent.

“He has always, always had the gift of gab!” he said.

Gunter parlayed his communication skills into a successful media career after graduating from the University of South Carolina, first as a recruiting analyst for ESPN.com, then a beat writer for Gamecock athletics and columnist for Spurs and Feathers.

Making the transition into sports talk radio, he has served as both host and cohost of programs in Columbia.

Gunter's latest job is as the co-host of the All-New Early Game on “The Game” WNKT (107.5 FM) with former WOLO sports director Tim Hill.

From 6 to 9 a.m., Hill and Gunter give their take on the sports news of the day, locally and nationally.

During a July 29 interview, Gunter talked about his new gig, his days at Lexington High School and 2016 expectations for South Carolina football:

Q. As a South Carolina graduate, how do you draw a balance between discussing the Gamecocks and the time to be critical (of an athletic program)?

A: You've got to be honest.

I think that's what people appreciate. We got into this business because we were fans of sports and if you're a fan of sports, you grew up pulling for somebody.

You may have moved here from out of state. Heath Cline (host of “Game Time”) grew up in Tampa and he's a fan of Colorado. We all grew up pulling for somebody, and I think in our business, it's okay to be a fan of a particular team.

But to do a radio show or to write a column or do something in sports media, you've got to be honest. So when South Carolina is 3-9, you can't say, “Everything's okay.

They're playing great. It's just that they're just catching bad breaks.” You have to call it honestly and you have to say, “Boy, the defense isn't very good right now” or “the quarterback situation is not working out.”

If you don't do that, then people are going to realize that you're a homer and that you're not very good at your job.

On the same front, you have to be honest about what the opposition is doing. You can't put down the Clemson Tigers just because they're doing better than your team. You've got to be honest that (Clemson quarterback) DeShaun Watson is probably the best player in the country and that they're one of the top two teams in the country, and even this year, they're a national title contender.

If you go on the radio and you say, “No, they're not very good,” then people are going to see through who you are as a sports media person.

“So I think it's okay to be a fan, but you have to be honest on the air.”

A: They want to know football, college football. In

A: At the end of the day, we’re a sports talk radio show.

Today, we had Jay Trotter from the Big 12 and we talked about Big 12 expansion. We had a guy from Blackandbluereview.com that covers the Carolina Panthers. We’ve had a guy to talk Major League Baseball.

So I would describe them as people who are very invested in their college football and want to know everything they can.

Q. What are your expectations for the University of South Carolina football team in 2016?

A: I'm in the minority. I think the talent is better than a 3-9 team. They lost four games last year by a touchdown or less, and in four of those games, they had the ball with a chance to go down and score at the end of the game to either tie or win the game.

Everybody remembers Jerrell Adams fumbling at Tennessee where if they kick the field goal, they tie it, or if they score, they win the game. The same thing (when) they had the ball at the end against Texas A&M and, obviously against Kentucky, they threw the interception.

So, a lot of missed opportunities. So you bring in a new coaching staff. I think even with the loss of (linebacker) Skai Moore, the defense is talented. So my expectations are actually much higher than everybody else’s.

I'm saying 7-5 for that team this year, given that I think they can win three out of the four non-conference games, and that the SEC schedule, even though three of the big games — Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Mississippi State — are on the road, they can be pretty successful this year with the talent. They don't have any depth, but they can be successful.”

Plantation-made high chair has served generations of children

outhern, plantation-made furniture with a family provenance is rare and highly desired. The piece pictured here is the only one of it’s kind to be seen in South Carolina.

Lovingly crafted for the most precious of all family members and passed through a family with its story intact, makes this a special piece indeed.

This child’s high chair was passed down in the Fuller family of the Deutsch Fork near Peak, SC. Made about 1800, numerous generations of the Fuller/Amick family have sat in the little chair. The chair made its way into Fairfield County, specifically, the Strother community in western Fairfield county, when Willie and Lottie Fuller married and moved to the Alston Plantation in the early 1900’s.

The original alsTon home was a ruin at that time as it had been burned by Sherman’s men during the war. The house had a swimming pool or cistern on the roof, that also doubled as the “plumbing” system for the house. The granite gates and the moss draped live oak alley is still very much intact and is quite a sight to behold.

The Fuller’s raised a large and useful family on the old place and continued to farm there until Lake Monticello was created by flooding. Many acres surrounding the old plantation were taken under.

When grandfaTher Willie Fuller had to leave his beautiful farm in his later years, the family home’s furnishings were distributed among his and Lottie’s children. One of his sons, Claude Marion Fuller and his bride Barbara Jane Corley Fuller, received the cherished child’s chair and have taken excellent care of it for many years.

Generations of children have enjoyed themselves in this little high chair through the Claude Fuller family. The original bottom of poplar strips woven in a herringbone pattern is still intact and very solid within its hickory and oak frame.

This one of a kind family heirloom is now in the Fuller household in Springdale, a treasure for future generations of the Fuller family to cherish.

You will get a confirmation box. Choose what is right for you and hit apply. This will stop messages from popping up on your computer and will send them straight to your inbox

Q. How do I stop seeing someone’s posts without “un-friending” them?

A. If you visit your Facebook friend’s page there will be a follow button on their top photo. If you click on this button it gives you three options.

1. You can follow and see first which means when you open up Facebook, if they have posted anything, you will see it first.

2. You can follow at default. Which just means their posts show up how Facebook’s algorithm determines.

3. You can un-follow them. You will still be friends with them but you won’t see anything they post, unless you visit their page.

Q. Can I stop Facebook

from owning my pictures and information?

A. No matter who owns the pictures, posting a block of text to your Facebook wall will NOT, let me repeat that one, it will not change your security and stop Facebook from using your content.

According to Facebook’s policies, the members own their own content.

Facebook cannot use any content that is set under a privacy filter.

However, if you have your pictures and videos set to be viewable by the general public, then Facebook has the right to use it as well.

Facebook does not claim ownership of any photos, videos or the like.

They simply don’t need to.

The Veep who never set foot in Washington

emember the old Jimmy Stewart classic “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”?

It’s about a political novice who is appointed U. S. Senator out of the blue and then, well, goes to Washington. (I’m not spoiling anything for you if you’ve never seen the movie; it’s in the title.)

More than 160 years ago, a man became Vice President of the United States without going to Washington.

He never even set foot inside the Capitol the entire time he had the job. Here’s why.

There was a heap of celebrating in the Heart of Dixie in December 1819. Alabama had just been admitted to the

Much of the hard work in securing statehood had been done by a 33 year-old lawyer named William Rufus DeVane King. (He also wrote the state’s first constitution.)

Born into a wealthy North Carolina planter family, he’d only arrived in the Alabama Territory the previous year.

King created a cotton plantation called Chestnut Hill on land that became known as “King’s Bend” outside the city of Selma (which he selected the name for, by the way, taking it from the 18th Century poem “The Songs of Selma”).

Alabama’s state legislature showed its gratitude for all of King’s efforts by making him one of the state’s first U.S. Senators.

He quickly got on the fast track, becoming President Pro Tempore and a behind-thescenes power broker. Over the next 30 years he helped pass such landmark measures as the Compromise of 1850, as well as serving a stint as Ambassador to France.

But King’s home life set Washington’s tongues wagging.

He shared a house with fellow senator and lifelong bachelor James Buchanan.

There were lots of whispers and finger-pointing about the pair’s, uhm, closeness. (Andrew Jackson called King “Miss Nancy.” Let’s leave it at that.)

When the 1852 election rolled around, King’s Democratic Party picked former senator and general Franklin

But amid the Democrats’ jubilation, there was a very serious problem. Although it wasn’t widely known among everyday Americans, King was seriously ill.

He was so sick with advanced tuberculosis, in fact, that when Inauguration Day arrived on March 4, 1853, King wasn’t on hand for the ceremony.

He was in Cuba, where it was hoped the warm winter weather would preserve his deteriorating lungs. (It didn’t.)

So Congress passed a special act allowing him to take the oath of office outside the United States.

King was sworn in as America’s 13th vice president in Matanzas, Cuba on March 24, 1853.

He grew so weak, it was obvious he would never see Washington again. He was taken home to his beloved Chestnut Hill plantation in Alabama, dying there on April 18, just two days after his arrival.

Rufus King never presided over the Senate or performed any other official duty. He only held the position for 25 days, the shortest tenure of all 47 vice presidents and five fewer than William Henry Harrison’s 30-day presidency. His face has never appeared on any coin, currency or postage stamp.

Yet you will find his bust today in the U.S. Capitol along with all the other Veeps, a silent reminder of the man who never got the chance to do the job Americans elected him to do.
