FISHING REPORT Lake Murray: •Striped bass: Good. Lake World reports that striper are starting to school from Bomb Island to the dam, and reports indicate that good-sized fish are staying up long enough to cast at them. Fish are also being caught down-lining herring in 30-60

feet of water, and a few fish are being caught trolling plugs at that depth.

•Bream: Good. Lake World reports that shellcrackers were out in 25 feet of water only a couple of weeks ago, but they have moved shallower into 6-8 feet of water and are scattered across the lake at that depth. Nightcrawlers have been the best baits.

70%-75% of our cats are typically insulin-dependent at the time of their diagnosis. This means the pancreas is unable to secrete enough insulin. These cats will require lifelong insulin injections. The other 25%30% have a form of diabetes similar to the Type 2 diabetes we see in people.

These cats initially have functional cells that produce insulin. Unfortunately genetics, obesity, high carbohydrate diet, sedentary life style are thought to contribute to the development of insulin resistance. With time the insulin producing cells are injured because of

the elevated blood glucose or hyperglycemia, abnormal fat metabolism, and secondary inflammation. If the diet is not modified and insulin therapy started, the cells that are producing insulin will permanently lose their ability to secrete insulin. These cats, if we can start therapy early enough, may go into what is termed diabetic remission and be able to go off insulin injection.

In cats able to go off insulin therapy, it doesn’t mean they can return to old habits. They still need to watch their weight so they do not become obese again. They also need to continue to exercise, and stay on a low carbohydrate, high protein diet. This improves the chance that they will stay in remission. Some cats will come out of remission and have to restart insulin therapy. You as the owner need

to closely monitor your cat for increases in thirst or urination, weight loss, or decrease in activity.

I prefer to use PZI insulin in the treatment of my patients. No matter what your veterinarian uses for your cat, they will need to instruct you in the proper handling of the insulin and how to administer insulin injections. Typically cats will require two insulin injections per day. Your veterinarian will make sure you are using the right type of insulin syringe for the type of insulin you are using. It does take a little practice but because of the small volume usually needed and the small needles, cats are usually pretty tolerant of the injection. I have had my own personal diabetic cat that was very tolerant of the injections. He received his while eating and the most he would do was sometimes raise his head, look at me, and then go back to eating. Granted every cat may not be this good, but the idea is to try and make it as stress free as possible. We try to teach our clients how to give the injections.

There are also online videos with instructions too.

Monitoring of blood sugar levels can be done in different ways from glucose curves to using fructosamine levels together with single glucose readings. If your cat receives too much insulin, it can

produce hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. If not recognized or treated promptly it can lead to weakness, collapse, and even seizures.

Cats with diabetes can be more prone to secondary infections because their immune system is suppressed.

The pancreas can also be more prone to inflammation which can lead to an upset intestinal tract. This can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite.

This can then lead to the glucose control being out of balance. If these issues develop contact your veterinarian.

Diabetes can be managed for the long term in cats just like people. Always be sure there is plenty of fresh water available. You want to try and be consistent on when the insulin injections are given each day and when your cat is fed. In cats I will often have the owner leave a small amount of food available throughout the day to help protect against low blood sugar. Cats are much more tolerant of high blood sugar levels than people or dogs.

Just like with people diabetes management is a long term commitment, but most cats are able to enjoy a fairly normal life despite their disease. If your cat is diagnosed with diabetes, don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions so you know what to expect and what you will have to do for your cat.

It’s every child’s dream to collect lots and lots of candy on Halloween night. But what is a child’s dream can be a parent’s spooky nightmare. Pediatric dental experts say – and we agree – that Halloween can be an opportune time to teach your children good oral health habits for life, without depriving them of Halloween treats.

Denying your children the Halloween experience can send the entirely wrong message and make candy seem even more irresistible.

Then once they’re out on their own, they’ll end up sneaking sweets or eating too much candy. So let them experience the joy of Halloween in all its sticky glory and the experience of going to a party or trick-or-treating.

After your children return from trick-or-treating or a party, go through their bags of Halloween candy together. Tell them to each pick the 10 or so (whatevernumber you decide, based on factors such as age)

treats they want the most.

Letting children help decide what is a reasonable amount of candy to keep has benets beyond good oral health. The message isn't "candy is bad," but thatcandy and other sweets, in excess, can lead to cavities.

Children learn how to control their diets and that what they eat aects their oral health, not just theirphysical health.

With your child, set a time of day to eat Halloween candy. This ritual “treat time” may last long after Halloween and help promote healthy thinking about treats.

Your children will learn that eating sweets shouldn’t be an all-day feast and that moderation is key.

No matter what time you designate as treat time, it's crucial for your child to brush his or her teeth soon after.

If it is nighttime, for example, brushing and flossing teeth before bed will help sweep away the recent sweets. Fluoride mouth rinses for kids also help prevent tooth decay, according to the American Dental Association.

Until a child is 7 or 8 years old, a parent should help them with brushing his child’s teeth, not simply supervise. Even after age 8, parents should supervise their brushing process. That includes friendly reminders to older children to brush and floss until they get to high school, when it should be a habit.

Dentists will offer $1 a pound, up to $5 for kids and parents alike who want to sell their extra Halloween candy. The candy is then sorted, and most of it is sent to our troops overseas through the efforts of the USO. Operation Gratitude has sent over one million packages and has collected over 130 tons of candy since 2005. The candy that cannot be shipped (the stuff that melts) is donated to the Ronald McDonald House here in Columbia.

Over the last four years, our offices have collected an average of 800 pounds of candy each year. Great news for the troops, and even better for the dental health of kids across the Midlands.
