Chills for a cause: LFP accepts Ice Bucket Challenge

Staff at Lexington Family Practice of Irmo recently took “Business After Hours” to a new level for fun and a good cause.

After the last patient left the offices on Aug. 21, one of the hottest days of the year, the staff took to the front parking lot and dumped buckets of ice water on their heads, taking part in the ice bucket challenge to raise money and awareness for ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Crystal Spires, a business office associate with Julie Gordon, came up with the idea for the staff. She said the ice bucket challenge has been all over the news and Facebook, and the staff was inspired by a patient who has the illness.

Spires said she mentioned the idea to office manager Cindy Urbates, who was excited about the group effort.

Dr. Robert Callis held a prayer before the staff lifted their buckets and poured ice water on their heads for those who have or have had it.

Gordon said the doctor said that if he had to pick any disease to get rid of, he would choose ALS. While the body is dying, the brain is aware, he said.

“The idea was to bring attention and awareness,” Spires said.

ALS is Amyo Trophic Lateral Sclerosis, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The ice bucket challenge success has spread throughout the nation, with thousands of people, including celebrities, taking part and challenging others. Since the ALS Association began tracking the campaigns progress the end of July, more than $53 million from more than a million new donors has been raised.

Patients still hung around to watch and cheer and even some family members took part after hours. Dr. Jackson’s children doused their heads and Kelly Spires, Crystal Spires’ daughter, took photographs. Kelly, 16, a student at River Bluff High School, takes a photography class at the school. She had taken the

“It was freezing,” she said. "(It was also) tons of fun. I loved their expressions.

I love taking pictures and this was for a good cause. I think it’s a great idea.”

Lisa Staehle, a nurse at the practice since 2005, said, “We as an office were happy to participate in this challenge in order to help with the research needed to

eradicate this devastating disease.

"We had fun,” she added.

The staff is a close-knit group and also participates in other philanthropic activities, such as getting gifts together for patients in need during Christmastime.

“We chose the hottest day of the year (for the challenge)," Spires said. “It was at least 100 degrees. This was something good for the community and we

hope good things will come from it. This doesn’t end here in these (LFP) walls.”

The Lexington Family Practice staff also made donations and laid down the gauntlet and challenge to other Lexington Family practices in the area: Lexington, Ballentine, Lake Murray, West Columbia, White Knoll, and North East. The practices are all part of Lexington Medical Center.

The Fighting Lady — the ship that would not die Over the next weeks, MacLeod, Mark and Jerry Bellune will take you on their adventures to exciting places where history was made in our state. You may follow their footsteps in your own adventures.

Charleston, S.C. —

When you set foot on board the Yorktown, you are stepping onto an aircraft carrier composed of 42,000 tons of steel.

To us it is a marvel of engineering that anything that heavy could even float.

Today it does not need to float as it is permanently embedded in soil at the bottom of the Cooper River.

Even hurricane force winds cannot dislodge it.

Construction of the giant aircraft carrier started when her keel was laid down on Dec. 1, 1941 at Newport News, Va., six days before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

A new name

After the Navy’s third Yorktown was lost in the Battle of Midway in the Pacific, she was renamed the

Yorktown, christened by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and launched in January 1943.

Known as “The Fighting Lady,” this fourth Yorktown was one of 24 Essex-class carriers built during World War II for combat action against Japanese forces in the Pacific theater.

Like previous ships carrying her name, she was named after the Battle of Yorktown which the British lost, ending their domination of the 13 colonies.

In 1943, the Yorktown sailed out of Chesapeake Bay and passed through the Panama Canal en route to Pearl Harbor and her first combat of the war.

Her task force arrived at the launching point near Marcus Island and her crew spent most of that day launching fighter and bomber strikes.

She next began air strikes on Japanese-held Wake Island and amphibious assaults on the Gilbert, Mariana and Marshall Islands,

Tarawa, Abemama, Makin and Wotje and Kwajalein Atolls, Guam, Iwo Jima and Chichi Jima, some of the most costly battles of the Pacific theater of the war.

She supported air operations in China, Hong Kong, Formosa, Okinawa and the Philippines before moving on to Japan.

The enemy retaliates

When her pilots attacked the Japanese islands, the Yorktown came under Japanese air attack.

Two twin-engine Japanese bombers tried to blow her out of the water but the Yorktown’s gunners downed them.

That afternoon, three more dive-bombers launched attacks.

The first two Japanese pilots failed but the third succeeded in planting his bomb on the signal bridge.

It passed through the first deck, exploded near the ship’s hull, punched two large holes through her side, killed five men, and wounded another 26.

And her anti-aircraft gunners brought the attacking bomber down.

In another attempt, the Yorktown’s gunners scored numerous hits and the Japanese pilot, in an apparent suicide dive, passed over the ship and crashed about 60 feet from her portside.

In March 1945, she headed for Okinawa, where she began softening-up strikes then back to Japanese waters for new strikes on the home islands.

The anti-aircraft guns scored numerous hits and the plane passed over the ship and crashed.

Based on the Yorktown pounding Japanese-held Okinawa, U.S. Marines stormed ashore.

For almost six weeks, she sent her planes to the island to provide direct support for the Marines ashore.

On April 7, 1945, the Allies discovered that a Japanese task force built around the elusive battleship Yamato was steaming south for one last, desperate offen-

sive against us.

Yorktown and her sister carriers quickly launched an attack and made several torpedo hits on Yamato just before the battleship exploded and sank.

At least three bomb hits on the light cruiser Yahagi sank it and strafing runs on the escorting destroyers left one afire and sinking.

In July 1945, she returned to the coast of Japan to launch air attacks on Tokyo, Japan’s largest city, and the Japanese naval base at Yokosuka.
