Furry Friends

The word no pet owner wants to hear The Pet Doctor 359-6611

One of the hardest things we deal with as veterinarians is to tell an owner we suspect or that we have diagnosed their dog or cat with cancer. For such a small word, its effects can be potentially devastating.

We tend to hear the word cancer and immediately think of a person we have known who has suffered with the disease or suffered through treatment. Many of us want to immediately project that scenario onto our pets. In some cases there is nothing that can really be done. However, just as human medicine has advanced, so have the options for our pets. In fact oncology, which deals with the treatment of cancer, is one of the fastest growing areas of canine and feline medicine.

Just as in people our pets are more susceptible to cancer as they get older. Cancer is the main cause of death in older dogs and is second only to kidney disease as the cause of death in older cats. This does not mean just because your cat or dog has been diagnosed with cancer, he or she will die from the disease. There are many types of cancer in dogs and cats just like people. Cancer basically results when a normal cell begins dividing without any control. In other words it goes “haywire.” These rapidly dividing cells can form a lump, spread into surrounding tissue, or spread through the blood or lymphatic system to other parts of the body. When the spread is to other parts of the body this is called metastasizing. What your pet experiences depends on what organ or organs

are involved, how rapidly the cancer grows, and how quickly it can spread. Some breeds of dogs or cats can be more susceptible to certain types of cancer.

So what do you do for your pet? What are some preventative measures?

Listed below are some of the things you can do to decrease the risk cancer will develop.

1.Have your pet spayed or neutered, before the first heat if possible, to greatly reduce the risk of mammary cancer.

2.Don’t Smoke – Cats have been shown to have a higher rate of cancer if they live in a household with a smoker.

3.Maintain a healthy weight 4.Check for lumps and bumps and other symptoms (persistent cough, trouble swallowing, etc). Consult your veterinarian if there is a problem 5.Regular blood and urine screening. Radiographs may also be recommended based on your pet’s age and breed.

6.Limit sun exposure especially in pink skinned dogs and cats. White cats are especially prone to skin cancers.

7.Get biopsies when recommended. This helps determine what cancer is present and aids in treatment.

8.Test cats for Feline leukemia and Feline aids as these viruses can cause cancer.

9.Lumps that occur at an injection site and does not go away after several weeks. These can potentially turn into cancer.

As with most diseases the earlier we can treat the better the prognosis. Even though we think of cancers more commonly in older pets, the fact is they can occur at any age. A new lump or unusual health issue is reason to call about your pet. Surgery is typically the first step used in most cancer treatment but not all.

If we can remove a potentially malignant lump early, we have a better chance to get all the cancer cells before they spread. In some pets chemotherapy or radiation are the best choices, and some pets benefit from a combination. The question is often asked “Should this cancer be treated if it can’t be cured?” The fact is we treat many diseases that can’t be cured such as heart disease and diabetes. What we are doing is trying to help our pets to live longer while still feeling good and interacting with the family.

In some cases there may be no good treatment. The goal would still be to make sure your friend is kept as comfortable as possible. In the end what is done is up to you. As hard as it is to discuss, euthanasia sometimes becomes the best option to prevent suffering.

Chemotherapy treatment in animals is not like that used for people. The same drugs used in people are used in dogs and cats.

However, the protocols are not as involved; and the doses are reduced. This helps keep your pet from going bald and reduces the side effects. I would not want my pet to be as miserable from the treatment as he would be from the cancer. I can say based on my own experience that my pets tolerated the chemotherapy well. In the general population less than a third of treated animals had unpleasant side effects. If the treatment does make your pet ill, the protocol can usually be modified to try and relieve the side effects. Part of the monitoring also involves frequent blood test to monitor white blood counts just as in people. Radiation is usually fairly well tolerated by our pets too. Chemotherapy and radiation are also usually done on an outpatient basis and don’t involve long hospital stays.

Just as for people new therapies for cancer treat-

ment are continually being developed. Just because you consider your pet to be old doesn’t mean he or she may not be a candidate for treatment. Numerical age

is not always a reflection of the overall pet health. If your pet is in good health, he or she may still benefit from treatment. Whether to treat or not is ultimately

your decision, but you need to have a thorough discussion with your veterinarian and other family members.

Retardment After Christmas, a teacher asked her young pupils how they spent their holiday away from school.
