Brookland-Cayce High School Soccer Coach Kevin Heise is a man doing what he loves.

“I just finished my 24th year as head coach at B-C,” Heise said. And his last year was one of his best.

The Bearcats' soccer team made it to the 2014 SCHSL Class 3A State Championship game. The season ended with a 3-2, overtime loss to Eastside, but Heise said there is a lot be proud of from the 2014 season.

“We have had a chance to reflect on what was a super campaign last spring. To finish the season 24-4-1 against the strength and quality of our schedule surely ranks as one of the top two seasons in Bearcat Soccer's

41-year history,” Heise said.

There was a lot to build on.

“Our team finished undefeated in Region V 3A for the third-straight campaign, and we have an unbeaten mark of 37 consecutive games in league play.”

While Heise relishes the success of last year, the possibilities of a new year that gets started after January get him excited.

“Motivation is easy,” Heise said.

“Every year is a new team and a new challenge. Sure, you may have players returning and such, but each team and each year is its own odyssey. There are always new twists and turns.

What players will emerge as team leaders? Who will be the goal-scorer? Can we sustain the success that this program has come to expect?”

Leading up to the first kick, Heise explained that players and coaches spend a lot of time preparing.

“We had a typical summer for our program, including a six-versus-six league. That included Tuesday morning doubleheaders against teams like Cardinal Newman, Irmo and River Bluff,” said Heise. And that was not all.

“In addition, most players worked out with their club teams and attend-

ed college ID camps and that sort of thing. Most of our players are playing club soccer this fall and that is so important in developing as a player,”Heise said. “Gone are the days when you can just come out in the spring and be okay. Due to the fact that our competition is playing at a high level on a year-round basis, you really have to do it in order to 'keep up with the Joneses.'"

While the effort to stay on top is not new, the venue for BC soccer is. The Bearcats will play the team's first game in the new Bearcat soccer and football stadium.

“I love the new stadium.

I keep looking for where the shortcoming is with the new stadium,” said Heise.

He joked that the washer and dryer is not operable at the moment, but he said that issue will be resolved.

He also said he likes the dimension of the new playing field.

“The width in the new

stadium will be 64 yards and that is a welcome and long overdue bonus for our program. So many teams in the past complained of The Cage's width of 56 and twothirds yards,” Heise said. “ We'll now have a pitch equal to the Chapins, Dutch Forks and Irmos. No one can complain now. I look forward to being able to host our tournaments at both the new stadium and at (the old soccer field called) The Cage. Our oncampus facilities will be second to none.”

And Heise is looking forward to a successful season.

“The 2015 team will be a new challenge,” said Heise.

“We have excellent, proven returnees in senior forward David Koprowski, who was the 2014 Class 3A leading scorer, and senior goalkeeeper Edwin Taylor, who had 14 shutouts in 2014.”

There is veteran talent in other areas, too.

“Senior defender Alex Peachey will team with ju-

nior Dominik Byars to form a formidable central defense. Quality junior midfielders Joel Salcedo and Ivan Vasquez will provide the Bearcats with strength in the middle of the lineup," said Heise. “Senior midfielder Caleb Kussro and sophomore defender Ilyass Balota give B-C a solid starting lineup.

“Also, Jon Linton, backup senior goalkeeper, gives B-C much needed depth at a key position,” Heise continued.

“Figure in the return of senior Drew Epting, who did not play 2014, and Grant Grieswell, who was injured most of last season, and Brookland-Cayce has the pieces to figure deep in the 3A race.”

Heise also said, as it is with “every team, chemistry, togetherness, and work ethic will prove to be the difference makers.”

ICU Nightmare In a hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, patients always died in the same bed, on Sunday morning, at about 1:00 a.m., regardless of their medical condition.

A traveling evangelist always put on a grand finale at his revival meetings, When he was to preach at a church, he would secretly hire a small boy to sit in the ceiling rafters with a dove in a cage. Toward the end of his sermon, the preacher would shout for the Holy Spirit to come down, and the boy in the rafters would dutifully release the dove.

At one revival meeting, however, nothing happened when the preacher called for the Holy Spirit to descend. He again raised his arms and exclaimed: “Come down, Holy Spirit!” Still no sign of the dove.
