History Field Trips by Katie Saltz

Engaging students in history lessons can be a challenge. But with the right field trip, children can jump back in time and experience history in an exciting, up-close way.

Pine Mountain Settlement School

Diane Irvin of Providence Montessori School has taken students to Pine Mountain Settlement School in Harlan County for the past 22 years for a lesson in nature, history and conservation. Fourth, fifth and sixth graders make the overnight visit to the environmental education facility each year, and Irvin says the students cannot wait for the trip. “They get to do folk dancing, weave on looms, hiking on the ridge, just learning about Appalachia,” Irvin said. Since students have the chance to attend three times with Providence, the classes rotate each year. Past class topics include 6

Native American studies, classes about trees and insects, and orienteering to use a compass. The school also emphasizes conservation. Students learn about wastefulness in the cafeteria by weighing their leftover food before throwing it away. “The students love to weigh the waste,” Irvin said. “They try so hard to not take too much, and they’ll help each other finish off leftovers so there is no wasted food at the end of the meal.” Pine Mountain is an ideal trip because of the connection to Kentucky nature, Irvin said. “Students realize how different the Bluegrass region is from the eastern mountains,” she said. “It’s virgin woods. They’re not used to seeing trees that large, and the buildings are hewn from right there in those mountains.” Field Trip & Activity Guide 2013-2014

Underground Railroad Museum Students at Clays Mill Elementary head to Cincinnati to visit the Underground Railroad Museum for a taste of history. Gayla Webb teaches fifth grade at Clays Mill and takes groups of 10-12-year-olds to visit the site that ties in to their social studies curriculum. “A huge benefit is that they have background knowledge of the slavery and underground railroad topics,” Webb said. “It is core content for fifth grade social studies. They’ve read about things in a book or watched a video, but to see things up close makes a difference.” Students enjoy the trip because of the up-

close and personal nature of the museum. There is a movie theatre, a real log cabin and plenty of items students are allowed to touch. “Students are able to comprehend the size of a slave quarters and then to see how the slaves were chained up in the cabin,” Webb said. “Another example is a miniature home that shows the places that a runaway slave would hide within the house as he or she traveled the railroad.”

Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park Just 20 miles south of Lexington is Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park, where Wilmore Elementary teacher Jenny Derr has taken her fifth grade class in recent years. Students often can’t believe there is a Civil War site so close to home. “The students think that it is so cool that there is a Union army base right down the street from our elementary school,” Derr said.

www.lexingtonfamily.com

On the field trip, students visit different “stations” focused on various aspects of Civil War history. Students learn about weapons, clothing, how to load and fire a cannon and children’s games from the time period. A favorite is the archaeological dig. “Students get to dig with UK college students to try to find artifacts that are researched by UK,” Derr said. “These artifacts help tell a story about the people who passed through Camp Nelson during the Civil War.” What makes the field trip memorable is the hands-on approach. Derr said the students get excited to see historical events with their own eyes. Said Derr: “Camp Nelson does a great job involving the students in each station and making them feel like they are truly a part of history.” 8

rapping paper, cookie dough or scented candles? Which do you think is the best fund raiser for your school?

If you said, “None of the above,” you’d be right. Parents and teachers at three Lexington elementary schools have found the secret to successful fundraising – without turning kids into door-to-door salesmen. “I refuse to sell anything,” said Charlie Head, mother of a third grader and PTA fundraising coordinator at Clays Mill Elementary. “I don’t need it, I don’t want it.” So how would she reach her goal of raising $15,000? After learning of another school’s successful “fun run,” Head planned her own last fall and named it the “Quack Attack.” For two weeks, kids asked parents, grandparents and friends to sponsor them in a fun run. Each time the kids brought in money they received a small rubber duck they could wear on a lanyard. “I would walk into each classroom and call out, “Who has Ms. Charlie’s money?” she said. Then she’d toss the rubber ducks to the excited kids. The event itself was a family-oriented 10

day with a DJ, Chick-fil-A and many parent volunteers. Each child received a T-shirt with a circle divided into 24 slices on the back. As the students completed each segment of the fun run, a volunteer would color in a slice with a permanent marker. A local company loaned wheelchairs so that physically challenged kids could participate, too. Quack Attack raised $24,000, and plans are underway for next fall’s fun run, which will be called “Go Green.” It will have a recycling theme and involve rubber frogs.

Picadome Fun Run Sarah Blair, special education teacher at Picadome Elementary for three years, has held two successful fun runs. Like Head, she did not hire an outside company to organize it. On a running “track” in the school parking lot, students jog 35 laps, collecting either a flat donation or money per lap from friends and family. The run is a hit with the kids, who each get a T-shirt. “All of our fourth and fifth graders were able to run the entire 35 laps,” Blair said, “and most kids were able to do over 20 laps.” The proceeds of last year’s run, which were matched by the PTA, were enough for the school to double the size of the playground. This year, the $11,000 the run earned was again matched by the PTA allowing the school to buy two carts, each outfitted with 30 mini iPads.

Rosa Parks Carnival Another popular, and family-friendly, fundraising idea is the school carnival. Marta Scroggins, mother of four, has been involved at Rosa Parks Elementary for 12 years and headed up this year’s spring carnival. She embraced the madness that surrounds UK basketball and called the event March Madness Mania. “I know this may sound strange at a kids event, but we opened up the school library to adults only to watch NCAA Championship games,” she said. The strategy worked because families showed up by the hundreds. Each of the 31 classrooms at Rosa Parks came up with a carnival-type game for the event, and parents donated items for themed gift baskets sold through silent auctions. Parents and local businesses donated items for raffle prizes – 60 items in all,

“Parents like to do their Christmas shopping at the fair. They like supporting the vendors who support the school.” Janice Rajcan including bikes and iPods. Kids purchased $10 wrist bands that allowed them to play games and included 10 raffle tickets. The games and activities were manned by parents and volunteers from area middle school and high school Beta Clubs. “We were able to run the event at very 12

low cost,” said Scroggins, “because most of the items were donated.” The one-night event netted $13,000 for the PTA.

Clays Mill Carnival Carrie Moore, mother of two, helped organize the spring carnival at Clays Mill Elementary this year. The event is a fundraiser for the annual overnight field trip to Pine Mountain for fifth graders. At the carnival, activities include karaoke, a cake walk, face painting, games and refreshments. The most popular – and profitable – booth this year was the one selling Silly String. Moore bought 500 cans of Silly String for $1 a piece at Kremer Wholesale in Lexington and sold each can for twice that. “The kids love it,” Moore said, “and we sold every can.”

Rosa Parks Vendor Fair In November, Rosa Parks holds a fair featuring vendors such as Tupperware, Pampered Chef, Tastefully Simple, and Premier Jewelry. “Parents like to do their Christmas shopping at the fair,” said Janice Rajcan, mother of two who organized this year’s fair. “They like supporting the vendors who support the school.” The fair brings in between $1,500 and $2,000 for the school, though it made more money in past years. “We used to be the only school holding a vendor fair,” Rajcan said. “ Now 8-10 other schools are doing it, too.” Events like these take time and a group of dedicated volunteers and teachers, but these events can prove to be very profitable. And, as Charlie Head said, “No one has to buy silly things.” Except, perhaps, for Silly String! Field Trip & Activity Guide 2013-2014

Lessons Learned in the

Field

By: Elizabeth Royse

F

or most students, when your teacher speaks the words, “We’re going on a field trip,” you immediately think, “free day.” You are free from turning in the homework that you would have forgotten to do anyway. Free from taking that test that you would have waited to the last minute to study for. Free from the boredom of the everyday classroom. As an elementary school student, this is how I felt about taking a field trip. Now, that I am older, I realize how much I learned from these exciting outings. Growing up in the Cincinnati area, field trips consisted of visits to the Cincinnati Zoo, the Omnimax Theater at the Museum Center, the butterfly exhibit at the Krohn Conservatory and the famous Kings Island amusement park. Whether it was viewing animals that I had never seen before, watching a movie in a theater with a screen surrounding you from all sides, or riding an exhilarating rollercoaster, each experience left its mark. At the age when field trips are appropriate, this is precious time. My experiences suggest that students are eager to learn through interactive activities and out-of-classroom opportunities. I have realized that because these trips were so out of the ordinary compared to a regular school day, I can look back and remember just how much fun I had learning and growing as a young girl. I conquered my fear of roller coasters at

14

Kings Island because all of my friends and teachers were there to hold my hand. And it was at the Krohn Conservatory where I learned of the thousands of different varieties of butterflies that exist in the world. Though these are not history dates or names of famous philosophers, it is still important that with the opportunity of going to each of these places, my eyes were opened to new experiences that helped me develop socially and mentally. My advice is to take students on trips such as these, where they can experience the

Take them on a trip that expands their interests in subjects in school, yet also allows them to develop through different social interactions and environments. It may seem like a “free day,” to young students, but as they age these trips will emerge as rich, valued memories – learning time well spent.
