Field Trips Bucket List

E

ver since the movie “The Bucket List” was released there have been dozens of these lists published for everyone from babies to seniors. Lexington Family has its own bucket list of places to go and things to do for elementary school students. And all these things can be accomplished on field trips!

By: Laurie Evans

1.

Pick a fruit or vegetable. So many kids see produce as coming only from the grocery store, but learning how and where our food grows is something every kid should experience. Central Kentucky is home to many farms that offer tours to school groups, including apple orchards and organic farms. Check out Boyd Orchards in Woodford County and Evans Orchard in Scott County.

Create something. Kids need the opportunity to create something every day that they are not graded on... Creating for creativity’s sake. There are plenty of field trip destinations that can provide kids a chance to create art and crafts. Suggestions: The Explorium of Lexington, the Living Arts & Science Center, Kentucky Mudworks, The Mad Potter, Painting with a Twist, Lexington Art Factory and Headley-Whitney Museum.

3. 6

2.

Experience professional music/art/dance. All children need to see a ballet, a philharmonic orchestra concert and a play before they grow up. The Bluegrass area is teaming with dance, theater and music organizations for your class or group. Suggestions: Bluegrass Youth Ballet, Lexington Ballet, Kentucky Ballet Theatre, Lexington Children’s Theatre, Lexington Philharmonic, EKU Center for the Arts, Jenny Wiley Theatre, Norton Center for the Arts and Woodford County Theatre. Say “WOW!” Expose your kids to the amazing, the surprising, the fabulous and the thought-provoking. Watch science experiments happen, explore a crystal cave, discover nature, see far-away constellations, learn about another country and find the unexpected. Suggestions: Carter Caves, Mammoth Caves, Dinosaur World, Hidden River Cave, the Hummel Planetarium and the Kentucky Science Center. Learn how things are made. How many of us ever get the chance to peek inside a factory and learn how the things we use every day are made? Several plants around Kentucky offer tours for families and school groups. Suggestions: Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Ale-8-One bottling plant, Evans Orchards’ cider press and the Louisville Slugger Museum. Test your limits. Ever tried a zip-line, climbed a rope to the ceiling, completed a team challenge, climbed a fire tower or crawled through a dark cave on your belly? Challenging yourself with the slightly scary or the physically difficult can be fun and rewarding. Visit Mammoth Caves, Legacy All Sports, Life Adventure Center and Pine Mountain. Delve into the past. Learning about history can be much more fun when you get to touch, taste, smell and explore. You can do all these things on a field trip. Suggestions: Visit Kentucky History Museum in Frankfort, take a train ride at the Kentucky Railway Museum or the Bluegrass Scenic Railroad, visit Old Fort Harrod or Fort Boonesborough, or explore the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati.

Why Field Trips?

Four Teachers Give Their Reasons Leanne Zimmerman The Lexington School 4th Grade Science A teacher for 35 years (20 at TLS), Zimmerman is a veteran of countless field trips – and is an enthusiastic proponent. Why? “They’re fun. They get the kids excited,” she said. “Field trips complement what goes on in the classroom and get students out of their normal routine.” Because field trips often include handson activities, she said, “Field Trips give

kids who learn in different ways a chance not to sit and write, or sit and listen or sit and do”

A favorite trip is Fort Boonesborough, which doubles as a history and science lesson. The fort comes with a secret weapon – Jawanna Herd, a former TLS teacher who serves as a nature guide. Kids are enthralled by the nature walk because Herd offers a theatrical performance. “She knows folklore, myths, songs. She is multi-media in person,” Zimmerman said. Zimmerman also takes advantage of the TLS grounds, which includes a creek and woods. Children study trees, plants and water, learning how to observe as scientists and to measure their findings. By the end of the spring and fall oncampus field trips, students have become experts in dendrology (study of trees) and limnology (study of fresh water). Said Zimmerman: “Hands down, the kids say they love the time they spend outside and that’s why we do it.” 10

Lauren Jacobs Lexington Latin School Kindergarten Jacobs is an ideal teacher for Lexington Latin School because she homeschooled her sons Caleb, 12, and Joshua, 8, before they enrolled at LLS. The school combines homeschooling with a traditional setting – students are in class Tuesday through Thursday only and complete assigned work on Mondays and Fridays. On select Mondays and Fridays, the school schedules optional field trips. Favorite destinations include the Ale8-One factory, the Capitol in Frankfort, Lexington Philharmonic, Lexington Ballet, and McConnell Springs. Jacobs also recommends COSI Science Center in Columbus, Ohio, and Bring a Book to Life at Jefferson Memorial Forest in Louisville. COSI is an overnight trip where students and parents check into the center at 5 p.m., sleep there and leave at 11 a.m. COSI offers hands-on, fun activities that engage all learners – auditory, visual and tactile. The Oceans exhibit is a popular destination. Said Jacobs: “For the kids

it’s like Disney World with science. They don’t realize how much they’re learning.”

At Bring a Book to Life, Jacobs’ students read the story “Hatchet” about a stranded boy who must survive in the forest. “Guides taught us what plants to eat, how to make a bow and arrow and how to build a fire with flint,” she said. “The students had so much fun. They loved the whole experience.” Field Trip & Activity Guide 2014-2015

Amy Mayer Community Montessori School Upper Elementary Because Montessori emphasizes selfdirection and selfreliance, CMS has numerous “going-outs,” a term coined by Maria Montessori. These short, local excursions, planned by students, provide real life experiences. Destinations can range from the city library and a local museum to a Mexican restaurant to speak Spanish and a jewelry store to study gemstones. Said Mayer: “Field trips allow

students to explore the outside world, and because students plan the trips, they help foster independence.”

“Montessori stresses grace and courtesy, so trips help students be respectful. For example, ‘How do you conduct yourself in a museum?’” Along with going-outs, CMS has two overnight trips for sixth-graders, both to Alabama – a civil rights trip to Birmingham and a visit to Space Camp in Huntsville. The Birmingham trip is enlivened by the presence of Ann Grundy of Lexington whose father was the pastor at the 16th Street Baptist Church that was bombed in 1963, killing four girls. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a family friend, and Grundy shares stories of his visits. Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, is as much fun as it sounds. Who wouldn’t want to wear space suits, see rockets and shuttles, and trace the same procedures as astronauts? “This is a unique trip for Kentucky students because it is outside their experience,” Mayer said. “And the kids just love it.” 12

Christy Coffey Southern Elementary 3rd Grade Along with meeting core standards, field trips at public schools are bound by certain rules, said Coffey, a 22year veteran of public schools. Field trips must fit core standards; they must be well planned for big groups of 100 or more; and the trips must be discussed afterward to make them relevant. Successful trips can be as diverse as a visit to the Hummel Planetarium at EKU or to the creek less than a mile from Southern Elementary. “The planetarium is rewarding because you’re offering an experience to many kids who might not have the resources or opportunity for such a trip,” she said. “This is a chance to enrich their lives.” Just as enriching can be a trip to the local creek. Southern third graders were met by professors from UK, who outlined what the kids will see in the creek. Said Coffey: “One of our students

found a salamander that the professors didn’t even know lived in the creek. The kids were so excited. They felt like real scientists.”

A favorite destination that meets core standards is the Living Arts & Science Center. “We brought the entire third grade for a whole day of science and art,” Coffey said. “We learned about animals and their habitats and ecosystems and climbed into an inflatable planetarium that showed what Native Americans called the constellations. “This fit perfectly with our curriculum.” Field Trip & Activity Guide 2014-2015

A Day in the A

Real World

s I brave the notion of the looming future, I yearn for the days of my youth, and more specifically, the days of field trips. Not so I can escape the classroom, but so I can prepare for the real world. Students before me shared in these feelings, which no doubt prompted Sayre School to initiate the Don Jacobs Seminars. This program is “organized around the principles of Earning, Owing, Spending, Investing, Saving, and Giving,” which it achieves through guest speakers, real-life applications and field trips. Students value the field trips the most because these off-campus experiences allow students to implement the principles they have learned such as civic responsibility, investing and philanthropy. My group, civic responsibility, visited the Capitol and met Gov. Steve Beshear, Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson, and Auditor Adam Edelen. We witnessed our state representatives at work, passing a bill on the Senate floor. While the trips of my childhood were fun, this trip surpassed them all by presenting an insight into what life outside of school could be – the stint at the Capitol not only gave me a memory to revisit, but a future to envision. The student investors were mentored by Sayre parent Michael Dawahare, a Lexington investor and financial advisor. Students later applied their newfound knowledge by entering a national 14

competition, the Stock Market Game. Those who espoused philanthropy organized the school’s annual three-man basketball tournament. The students also assembled patrons to sponsor the tournament. The money raised through these benefactors was later donated to local agencies. Through these excursions, I grasped what adulthood was all about. It is not about freedom, which my elementary school jailbreaks led me to believe, but about responsibility – responsibility to myself, my community and the needy.

The Don Jacobs Seminars at Sayre School achieve their organizing principles through guest speakers, real-life applications and field trips. Because of my own positive experience with the Don Jacobs Seminars, I affirm that all high school students stand to gain from these seminars. Through this program, students hone in on their interests, explore possible career paths and master their new independence. Ayesha Tanweer graduated from Sayre School this year and will attend the University of Kentucky in the fall. She served an internship this spring at Lexington Family Magazine.
