FIELD TRIPS 101 Karen Botts

Elizabeth Myers

Coventry Oaks Elementary ELL Teacher 24 years experience

“A Preparation Checklist”

F

or Karen Botts, an ELL teacher at Coventry Oaks and educator for 24 years, preparation and practicality are key. One of her first steps is to consult with the other grade levels to make sure field trips vary for students each year. “For example, if one grade level always goes to Fort Boonesborough, then make sure that you don’t schedule that trip too,” Botts said. “If kindergarten always goes to the pumpkin patch, then maybe first grade could go to the apple orchard.” Botts has a checklist she recommends that teachers have the day of the trip, including: t A list of all students with parent contact information, plus a copy for the bus driver; t Emergency contact and medical information for students; t Medications needed on the trip; t School shirts so students are easy to identify in a crowd; t A whistle to get your group’s attention. Adhering to school protocol is also important. “Make sure that you have followed proper procedure at your school,” Botts said. “Each school does things a little differently, so check with your front office to see how things are done.”

Mary Todd Elementary Family Resource Center 10 years experiences

“Know Your Audience”

E

lizabeth Myers encourages teachers to consider any barriers that may arise for the students on a field trip. “When planning a field trip or enrichment activity it is important to focus on the needs of the students that you serve, and this will guide the types of activities that you plan,” Myers said. This past school year, second grade students had a field trip to the YMCA, which included swimming. But not all students had swimsuits for the trip, so Myers and the Resource Center stepped in so all the students could enjoy the field trip. “I utilized part of the Center’s grant funding to purchase bathing suits for students that needed these,” Myers said. “Students received invites to take swimming lessons at the conclusion of the program, which is a great life skill for all children to have.” Myers has seen how field trips can expose students to new ideas and opportunities available to them. Last year the Lincoln Ladies, an afterschool girls group, got to tour the UK campus. “This allowed students that may not have a college graduate in their family to experience first hand what opportunities await them if they choose to attend college,” Myers said.

FIELD TRIPS 101 Beth Taylor

Anne Gray

Trinity Christian Academy 6th grade teacher 4 years experience

Bookend The Lesson Plan

B

eth Taylor has found success by bookending field trips with classroom activities. Taylor has taught at Trinity for the past four years and arranged field trips in the homeschooling community before that with her older children. Her fifth grade science class studies Newton’s Laws of Motion and simple machines. Taylor uses a multi-phase lesson to get the most out of the unit’s field trip to Toyota Manufacturing in Georgetown. Before the trip, a retired Toyota employee visits the class and speaks about working in the plant. “His visit helps the students understand what they will see and excites the students for our visit,” Taylor said. After the trip the students do a followup activity of drawing and labeling one of the machines they saw. “Part of each field trip we take is writing thank you notes to our host, and the drawings become the front side of thank you notes that they write and I send to Toyota,” Taylor said. A simple follow-up activity allows Taylor to gauge if the field trip accomplished the goal she set. “By preparing the students, executing my plan and gently evaluating the field trip, I help students focus and engage on our field trip without taking the fun out of the experience,” she said. 14

Community Montessori School Head of School 16 Years Experience

Let Children Guide The Trip

I

n her book “From Childhood to Adolescence,” Maria Montessori summed up field trips beautifully: “To go out of the classroom to enter the outside world, which includes everything, is obviously to open an immense door to instruction.” On the CMS campus, “going out” experiences in the Montessori context engage the child from the beginning of the toddler program through Middle School to connect children with the natural world around them. There are many opportunities for going out on the 13-acre CMS campus. Children take walks to the stream, to the orchard and to the gardens, experiencing the natural world and all its changes during the seasons. Going out typically serves a real purpose or meets a need in the classroom (i.e. trips to a nearby pet store for food for classroom pets, to the grocery for certain cooking ingredients, or to the library for materials to aid research on a particular topic.) Ideally, these excursions are planned, organized and executed by the children, with the teacher or assistant facilitating as needed. As a result, a child’s independence, selfdiscipline and responsibility are fostered. Plus, children can practice skills of grace and courtesy and resourcefulness as they encounter a broader range of people in their community. Field Trip & Activity Guide 2017-2018
