Once we came back we did labs to try and replicate the stalactites and stalagmites. The students really excelled with that final lab.”

What my students said: “Overall, the students were in awe of how dark and cold the cave was compared to outside, and that something so extraordinary was hidden so close to their home.”

Why it was my favorite trip: “I love any trip that connects our students to the amazing natural world around them. The students had a wide range of personalities and interests and yet, they all stood silently in awe during several moments in the tour. They talked about the trip for the rest of the week.”

It was remarkable to see how much more attention and care they paid to the following lab.

Although it was a lab focused on the chemistry and formation of the caves, the students were truly drawn to the beauty of the space. The students are able to apply what we are doing in the classroom, and also expand their love of nature.”

trip. From picking their pumpkin, to riding on the tractor, to sampling the cider and donuts, to playing with friends in the play area, it’s always a favorite.”

Why it was my favorite field trip: “I love this trip because, for many of our students, this is their first experience at an orchard. I love watching their excitement as they experience new things with their friends and family. I also love watching them make connections between what we’re learning in the classroom and what they see firsthand at the orchard.”

Do Classroom Rules Apply Here?

Watching Others Make Mischief at State Park To Making My Own at Safety City By: Sarah Yohe

I

am a rule-follower. Throughout my childhood, I was the kid teachers left “in charge” if they had to leave the room. The kid with the privilege of checking their teacher’s mailbox. The kid entrusted with delivering messages to other classrooms.

But in a class full of 27 ten-year-olds, everyone didn’t fit this archetype, and watching rule-breakers thrive in new places was very entertaining for me.

For instance, my fourth grade class at SCAPA Bluegrass visited Fort Boonesborough State Park. A blacksmithing demonstrator, dressed in full colonial attire, was holding his tool-in-progress when one student stepped over the three-brick-tall wall keeping us a safe distance from him.

The kid barely touched the demonstrator’s tongs before he was pulled away by my teacher and chastised. We all giggled at his antics.

Other kids, whether established or prospective class clowns, got up to their own mischief. I remember someone stole a swatch of fabric from a sewing demonstration display.

Using a pottery wheel, we created a lopsided vase until one kid purposefully squeezed the clay between his fingers and ruined it. The result: Laughing students and an angry teacher.

There was one trip, however, that brought us rule-followers and rule-breakers together. Safety City: a (loosely, I can say now) educational program about road safety.

We kids were taken into a parking lot

with a bunch of pint-sized electric cars and were told to pick one. Then we were ushered out of the lot and into a made-up city that modeled the real world.

There were fake restaurants and schools, as well as stop lights and things like “right turn only” painted onto the streets.

There was only one supervisor walking around, and while his back was turned, everyone took turns t-boning and rearending each other in our tiny cars. To this day, it was the most fun I can remember having on any field trip.

The day ended with our supervisor admitting that our antics weren’t unique. He told us to buckle our seatbelts just in case those accidents weren’t pretend next time.

And I listened. My dad, often guilty of not wearing his seatbelt on trips to the store or to work, had to listen to my 10-year-old self badger him on entire drives unless he buckled up. I’d try to imitate the supervisor, “In case we get in an accident, it could save your life.”

The message was so important, not only because a grown-up had said it, but because I really stood by it. This passion for seatbelt-wearing was thanks to the fun I had not wearing one and driving through stop signs in an imaginary city. The irony is not lost on me, but neither is the lesson.
