Take Fit Family Challenge to Win Prizes

I

t’s time to sign up for the 2016 Lexington Family Magazine Fit Family Challenge, and if you’re like me you’re both excited and worried. Excited because I always dream I can get back into the kind of shape I was in high school when I played sports 24/7. All it takes is hard work. Worried because high school was more than four decades ago and I’m still wondering when I’m gonna get back in shape. I guess I should adjust my expectations, ya think? My goal is simple – I want to lose 15 pounds… by yesterday. I’m told that is a highly unrealistic goal. (Don’t you hate Negative Nells). But a man can dream, can’t he? Actually, I’ve discarded any weight-loss target. My goal – like so many of us – is to improve my health by getting in better shape. As a man of a certain age (let’s just say that I’m older than most of our readers

– way, way older), I still see myself as a role model for my son, who turned 24 in April. Following a healthy, active lifestyle is one of the many choices I make that I hope my son will emulate. And I learned a long time ago that when it comes to parenting, talk is cheap. Action rules the day. Getting in shape isn’t rocket science – We all know that we have to eat less and exercise more. That’s not the problem. The problem is learning strategies for finding time in our busy lives to exercise. That’s how the Fit Family Challenge can help. We are providing professional help, community classes and all kinds of prizes as incentives so everyone in the community can jump on the fitness bandwagon. To check out all the prizes and details, please see our stories on Pages 8, 10, and 11. See ya at the gym. Y

Healthy Breakfast On the Go

W

By Tiffany McAvoy

e’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. As a teacher, I see firsthand the effects of not having a good breakfast has on kids. They tend to be irritable and sluggish, and it’s hard for them to stay focused. Even though I know this, mornings are quite hectic at our house. It would be easy to grab a box of sugary cereal bars, but that is just setting kids up for a sugar crash later in the day. In order to prevent this, I have started preparing healthy breakfasts ahead of time. b On weekends, make pancakes or waffles for breakfast, and make a lot of extras. It doesn’t add much time and the mess is already made, so it just makes sense to cook as many as possible. bPrepackaged mini-muffins from the store are pretty expensive, so make your own mini banana muffins and package them into individual servings in plastic baggies. b We love breakfast burritos, but don’t have time to run through a fast food restaurant in the mornings. Instead, we make several ahead of time and freeze them. Just take scrambled eggs, turkey sausage and cheese and roll it up in a whole wheat tortilla. b Make fruit smoothies ahead of time and freeze them in plastic cups. Heat them up for several seconds in the microwave to just soften them enough to eat. Here’s how to get the best results from freezing and thawing food: b Flash freeze by laying the cooled food on a cookie sheet and putting it in the freezer. b When frozen, take the food out and individually wrap in freezer paper. This keeps food from sticking together. b When you heat up a portion in the microwave, completely wrap the food in a damp paper towel. This keeps it from drying out and getting hard edges. Making healthy breakfast ahead of time saves time and money, and it allows you to control what ingredients your kids are eating. Tiffany McAvoy is the mother to Tristan, 20, Abby, 13, and Tori, 9. She is an elementary school teacher in Madison County and writes about her family’s adventures with food on her blog wackyfoodwednesdays.com. Y Y

The Boyd Family

MEMBERS: Jennie, 42, Doug 46 / CHILDREN: Charlotte, 12, Kathleen, 10, Eleanor, 8 HOMETOWN: Lexington / SCHOOL: Charlotte (Edythe J. Hayes Middle), Kathleen and Eleanor (Athens-Chilesburg Elementary

OCCUPATION: Jennie, former director of museum tours at the Kentucky Historical Society, now stay-at-home mom. Doug, Director of the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at UK. EDUCATION: Jennie: Brown University, B.A, history and American civilization. Doug, Denison University, B.A. history; Indiana University, MA and PhD in folklore.

Their Story: No one in the Boyd family is anywhere near obese, but looks can be deceiving. “I’m squishy,” Jennie said. “I lack muscle tone and strength. I’ve never been athletic, so I can’t wait to get advice on improving my fitness level.” Doug is just as excited about being

selected as a Spotlight Family. He played high school and college soccer, but back injuries limit what sports he can do now. Doug needs an exercise plan that will allow him to get fit with activities that don’t cause pain. The Boyd daughters are active. Charlotte plays select soccer year round. Kathleen participates in Girls on the Run at school, and Eleanor plays recreational soccer. With the girls’ sports, after school activities, and the family’s other commitments, dinner time can be a challenge. “Our meals are often pretty

rushed,” Jennie said. “I feel like I’m always making the same things over and over again. I’m interested in vegetarian options but wind up making a lot of pasta. Enough with carb-based meals!” Mom and dad need guidance on incorporating exercise into their daily lives and sticking with healthy food choices. “I’m not good at setting specific health goals.” Jennie said. “I’d like to lose 10 pounds, but what I really need is more stamina and energy. We are so ready for positive changes in our lives.” Y

The Jackson Family Members: Rhonda, 30 / Children: Victoria, 14, Larae, 11 Hometown: Lexington / School: Both girls attend Bryan Station Middle Occupation: Part-time teacher at Bryan Station High, part-time worker at UK Disability Resource Center, and substitute teacher for Fayette County Public Schools

Education: Rhonda: UK undergraduate degree in family and consumer science education, and master’s degrees in business management (University of Phoenix) and education (EKU). Taking classes for principalship certification (Asbury University).

Their Story: As a single working mother, Rhonda struggles to fit exercise and proper diet into her busy day. When asked if she has enough time to exercise, she answered, “No, but I do.” Currently, she takes a Zumba class after school at Bryan Station High. The family also eats healthy meals when they are home, which is rare because everyone is involved in so many activities.

Both girls are members of FCA, the school track team and archery club, and help with childcare for Step by Step, a mentoring group for young, single moms. Victoria plays the cello and dances with Kiddie Kapers. Larae plays the violin, acts in school plays, is on the school news crew, student council and competes on the academic team. Originally from Chicago, Rhonda enrolled at UK as a single mom, earned her bachelor’s degree and then two master’s degrees. She taught full time at Crawford Middle but was laid off after two years when school enrollment dropped. Working as a substitute adds another

element of uncertainty to the family’s schedule. She also volunteers at Step by Step and the Nerd Squad that tutors schoolchildren. Rhonda sits on the Board of the Central Music Academy and sponsors the Black Lives Matter club at school. While juggling all those commitments, Rhonda hopes the Fit Family Challenge will improve the family’s eating habits (“especially with snacks,” she said) and boost their exercise time. “We don’t have a specific weight loss goal,” Rhonda said. “We’re excited about this chance to make lifestyle changes so we can be a healthier family.” Y April 2016

Allowances: what Are the rules and Why?

n order to learn to manage money, you have to have money to manage. This is a good reason to give a child an allowance – with no strings attached.

Without rewards and punishment linked to an allowance, children are more motivated to save and to give – two essential components of money management. What is the right amount of allowance? A dollar per year of age is a good rule of thumb. As the child ages, consider what you want her to be responsible for buying. Children are responsible, with your support, to spend wisely and stay within their budget. Mistakes are valuable learning experiences. When their money is gone, it is gone. Let them own the problem they created by spending their money. Offer empathy instead: “That shirt would have looked wonderful on you!” Let them experience their sadness and frustration without rescuing them: “Oh, let me buy it for you!” or blame: “I told you not to buy that silly necklace last week. I hope you’ve learned a lesson!” If children experience the consequences of their financial indiscretions, they will learn how to change their behavior. Here are some tips to get you started: t Be consistent. Once a week is good for young children, while older children can get an allowance once a month. t Determine what percentage of each allowance goes to each category (e.g., Savings 40%, Charity 10%, Medium Term 12 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

25% and Spending 25%) Adjust as you go. Have a visual – 4 jars, 4 envelopes, 4 boxes…. each labeled with a purpose: Long-term savings – This goes to the bank for college. Teach them how to fill out a deposit slip and take them to the bank with you to make the deposit. Leave it alone and let it grow. Charity – Any good cause your child chooses. Your child can give weekly or save up and donate all at once. Medium term savings – For more expensive purchases such as new cleats, a special outfit, a game, skateboard, etc. Spending – This is for everyday spending and is the only money that should be kept in a wallet or purse. It can be spent or put in any of the other jars. t Talk about values: giving, saving and budgeting. t Walk the talk. t Consider loans and terms of repayment. Follow all the way through. t Think about “matching funds” for gifts or vacations. It’s good to give children responsibility and control over themselves whenever possible, and money is a good place to begin. They learn to be competent and confident in their skills, feel less entitled and they become more independent. Lesley Iwinski is a Lexington mother of three grown children, a family physician and Executive Director of The Parent and Family Enrichment Center, Inc. and Growing Peaceful Families. hen my son was born in August, I dreaded finding a daycare for him. Every day on maternity leave, I woke up knowing that eventually I would have to leave him in the care of someone else. I was not happy about it at all. Miraculously, I have returned to work... and I haven’t had to leave him with someone else. Lexington Family Magazine offered one benefit that few other workplaces can tout: Bringing my baby to work. Ezra has been coming to work with me since he was four months old. My desk is scattered with binders, rattles, highlighters and burp cloths. He naps in a bassinet nestled by my desk, and spends his time kicking away on a play

mat or bouncing around in a walker. The office was already equipped with a treadmill desk, so when Ezra needs to be held, I can baby-wear him and continue my work while standing. The bond my son is forming with my coworkers is a treat for my eyes. He’s familiar with each member of our staff and doesn’t hesitate to be held by anyone. Some days I get anxious that he is making too much noise or is bored, but the situation has worked out better than I could have hoped for. We call Ezra our “Easy E” because of his laid-back attitude. He poses a “chicken or the egg” question. Can I bring him to work because he is so chill? Or is he so chill because he has always been brought to work? Either way, I want to assure our readers that at Lexington Family Magazine, we are staying in touch with current parenting issues. Just ask our assistant, Ezra. Y

SUMMER CAMPS 2016

Broaden their Horizons

Kids Can Explore New Interests While Having Fun Fun Fun at Summer Camp

I

By Katie Saltz

t’s easy to find summer camps centered on your child’s favorite hobbies. But what about choosing something completely new and different? Summer camps are an opportunity for children to explore new territory. Whether it’s a new sport, academic subject or artistic venture, breaking out of the box can help uncover a new passion. For Lexington mother Jennifer Smith, she thought her daughters had tried every camp under the sun. Her 12-year-old twins, Madison and Taylor, attended everything from sports camps to science camps. As an executive producer at WLEX, Smith receives plenty of newsletters in her email regarding local events. She saw an email from The Carnegie Center about a camp called “Legal Eagles”

and thought it would be an interesting fit for her girls. “It was something they had never done before, and we’d done a lot of camps,” Smith said. “I had never heard of any camps about the legal system.” The one-week camp explored various aspects of the law and was led by a working attorney. The camp included a mock trial with a federal judge. “They learned about all the different jobs in the industry, they got to take field trips to the courthouse, they sat in on a case,” Smith said. “They got to see it all up close. They really took it seriously.” Smith knew Taylor would be interested in Legal Eagles, since she is an avid fan of crime shows. But she was pleasantly surprised that Madison was excited by the camp as well. “It was really great to go tour the court

buildings and do the mock trial in front of a real judge,” Madison said. Like many working parents, Smith relies on camps as childcare during the summer. She was happy to find camps that provide opportunities to get kids out of their comfort zones. Her daughters agree. “Try something new,” Taylor said. “You might be surprised at what you discover you like about a camp and learning a new activity.” Y

Ask the Right Questions Before Picking a Camp

W

here do you even begin to choose a summer camp that is suitable for your child? She might already have one in mind, but your job is to make sure it’s the right fit. Choosing a new camp, especially an overnight camp, requires proper vetting. Just as you wouldn’t send your child to a sleepover at a complete stranger’s house, you must do your research when it comes to camp. The right answers will allow you to drop your child off with peace of mind this summer. The American Camp Association recommends asking the following questions to help choose a camp that is a safe and supportive environment for your child. What is the camp philosophy? Does the camp reinforce your own parenting philosophy? Speak directly to the camp director and ask for a description of the camp’s philosophy and examples of how it’s carried out. You should get a sense if this camp suits your child’s personality and learning style. What is the camp director’s background? The ACA recommends that the director possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, have completed in-service training within the past three years and have at least 16 weeks of administrative experience before assuming the responsibilities of director. You also want a director who communicates well and responds to your inquiries with understanding.

16 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

What training do counselors receive? At a minimum, camp staff should be trained in safety regulations, emergency procedures and communication, behavior management techniques, child abuse prevention, appropriate staff and camper behavior and specific procedures for supervision. You can also ask what qualities the director looks for when hiring counselors. Does the camp value compassion and trustworthiness? Find out what characteristics camp officials want their staff to possess. How does the camp handle behavioral issues? This truly reflects a camp’s philosophy. The rules should be well-communicated in advance and seem fair. Make sure you find the system reasonable before registering. Homesickness is common among campers, and many camps have guidelines for parent-child communication during camp. Talk about these guidelines with your child to make sure you are both comfortable with their policies. Can the camp provide references? References are an ideal way to get the scoop on a camp. A fellow parent can offer insight and answer questions from a different perspective than the director. Info: www.acacamps.org Y

Curious Edge

Brain Boost Helps

Fifth-Grader Bloom

A

By Kimberly Hudson

math whiz in the fifth grade at Stonewall Elementary, Zoe Legg, 11, is a gifted student with a sweet disposition and a delightful sense of humor. Zoe gets good grades and is an avid reader even though she struggles with her communication skills. When it comes to writing and social situations, she stumbles when trying to translate the thoughts in her head to speech and the written word. Not surprisingly, this undermines Zoe Legg her confidence. As the problem persisted, Sheri Legg brought her daughter to The Curious Edge, which specializes in treatment of dyslexia and other language and cognitive difficulties. Owner Kimberly Hudson, an experienced therapist, tested Zoe. Her diagnosis confirmed Sheri’s suspicions – language processing disorder. So nearly a year ago, Zoe started treatment – 90 minutes a day, five days a week during the summer, gradually tapering off to twice a week this school year. Zoe participated in the Brain Boost program, tailored specifically to meet her needs. The program was fun for Zoe. She alternated between computer-based and hands-on exercises. She worked with puzzles, recall exercises and quick cadences – all designed to increase her processing speed. “Kimberly was very good about making sure the process was fun for Zoe,” Sheri said. “If it wasn’t, Kimberly would change what they were doing. “The whole staff was very big on celebrating successes. That really helped Zoe’s confidence.” Everything else developed as well. “Her conversational skills have improved and she is better in school when it comes to answering open-ended questions,” Sheri said. “She is better with conceptual thinking. “She is less frustrated and needs less direction. Her organizational skills have also improved.” These changes come at the right time – Zoe begins middle school in the fall. “She is better prepared for that now, and I think she feels that way, too,” Sheri said. “I’m very glad we got this treatment for her.” Info: (859) 899-3343(EDGE) or http://thecuriousedge.com Y

LINK Advocates for Breastfeeding Legal Protections By Cerise Bouchard

A

s the numerous health, economic and societal benefits of breastfeeding have received greater recognition, more families are choosing to breastfeed their babies. Unfortunately, those moms and babies face too many barriers. The Lactation Improvement Network of Kentucky (LINK) was established in 2011 to work on removing those barriers and to make breastfeeding easier for all Kentuckians. This year, LINK is making strides in using legislation to make meaningful public policy changes to remove some of those barriers. Senator Reginald Thomas (DLexington), sponsored Senate Concurrent Resolution 9 (SCR 9), which sailed through committee and both chambers with unanimous YES votes. This means that over a 30-day period, every single Kentucky Senator and Representative present for a vote supported breastfeeding. This resolution simply establishes the will of the legislature to recognize the benefits of and barriers to breastfeeding

and calls on businesses and public health departments to support their breastfeeding employees and clients. While these votes in support of breastfeeding are encouraging, our legislators need to continue to pass laws that meaningfully support breastfeeding. Two such laws have been introduced this legislative session. Senate Bill 34 (SB 34), also sponsored by Senator Thomas, amends current Kentucky law that protects a woman and baby’s right to breastfeed in public by establishing a penalty fine for anyone who violates the law. Currently, KRS 211.755 has no penalty for violation, and Kentucky mothers and babies continue to be harassed while breastfeeding. House Bill 18 (HB18), sponsored by Representative Joni Jenkins (DLouisville), places pregnancy, childbirth and related conditions such as lactation under civil rights protections. HB 18 gives mothers specific recourse if their employer has discriminated against them.

"Where Future World And Local Leaders Learn, Work & Play"

This is especially important, as women are increasingly the main breadwinners in a household. Unfriendly amendments to HB 18 threaten these important protections for Kentuckians. Kentucky moms face mixed messages when shamed or told to leave an establishment or are refused accommodations when they return to work. This happens despite the fact that every major medical organization and hospitals encourage breastfeeding, citing irrefutable health benefits to both mom and baby. The Lactation Improvement Network of Kentucky would love to hear from more Kentuckians about their struggles and successes with breastfeeding in public and treatment in the workplace related to pregnancy and expressing milk. Please email your stories to breastfeedingLINK@gmail.com. For information on current Kentucky and Federal laws protecting breastfeeding, visit www.BreastfeedKentucky.com. Y

Why Boys Are More Prone to Disease

B

oys exist because they get a Y chromosome from their fathers instead of an X chromosome like they get from their mothers. A girl is formed if the baby gets an X chromosome from each parent. That one chromosome makes boy babies more susceptible to a variety of diseases. If girls have a defective copy of a gene on one of their two X chromosomes, they usually have a non-defective copy on the other one that will work just fine. Because boys have only one X chromosome, any defective genes on it can cause diseases usually not seen in girls. These “X-linked” diseases include hemophilia, red-green color blindness, and some types of muscular dystrophy. For a variety of reasons, boys tend to more commonly develop a whole host of disorders. These include autism spectrum disorders, Tourette’s syndrome, reading delay, conduct disorders, oppositionaldefiant disorder and stuttering.

Volunteers Make Hospice Work 1,000 Trained People Give Selflessly to Others

By Kim Livesay

A

pril is National Volunteer Month, and organizations across the country are celebrating the gifts of time and talent that individuals selflessly give to help others. Nowhere is this commitment more valuable and heartfelt than in hospice – and Hospice of the Bluegrass is thriving in this community thanks to its volunteers. Even when a person is nearing the end of life, there can be a lot of living to do. Hospice makes that possible by bringing care, compassion and hope to patients and families facing life-limiting illness. Nearly 1,000 trained volunteers support people during this journey. These volunteers make the mission of Hospice of the Bluegrass possible. Hospice volunteers spend time at

the bedside, help out family caregivers, participate with outreach efforts, assist in the office, provide fundraising support, and much more. They give of themselves to make life better for others. “Across the country, more than 355,000 dedicated volunteers provide more than 16 million hours of service every year,” said J. Donald Schumacher, president of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. “Hospice as we know it in the United States would not exist without the volunteers who do so much.” Most hospice volunteers choose to give their time helping others because of their own experiences with the compassionate care hospice provided to their dying loved one. During National Volunteer Month, Hospice of the Bluegrass celebrates the gifts of its volunteers who make our

community a better place. For more information on becoming a Hospice volunteer, visit www.hospicebg. org. Y

Against All Odds, Emma Excels

B

Emma Young School: East Jessamine High Sport: Basketball Academics: Emma raised her GPA from 1.2 as a freshman to 3.45 as a senior. Parents: Coach Jacqueline Coleman and her husband, Chris O’Bryan

asketball star Emma Young of East Jessamine High has no business being as charismatic, amiable and all together engaging as she is. Not when you consider her background. When she showed up at East Jessamine as a freshman, she was beyond at-risk. As a child, she bounced from school to school, relative to relative, from bad situation to worse. At 15, she moved in with a relative in Nicholasville but after a few weeks was asked to leave. She stayed at the home of friends for a night here and there, and planned to leave school when she told basketball Coach Jacqueline Coleman that she had to go. Emma had been in the program only briefly. Coleman had no idea of her basketball skills. Still, Coleman arranged a meeting with Emma and her mother. At the end of the meeting, Jacqueline and her husband, Chris O’Bryan, the school’s boys basketball coach, agreed to take Emma in. Why? It had nothing to do with basketball. “I hadn’t even seen her play,” Coleman said. “But I saw something special in her. She lights up a room. of a beautiful friendship – one neither can talk about without tearing up. Emma’s GPA was barely 1.2 and discipline was a foreign concept. Today, she carries a 3.45 GPA, works part-time after school, has a scholarship to play basketball at Texas A&M Corpus Christi (a Division I school) and is on track to graduate with honors. How did she do it? “A lot of nights at the kitchen table, a lot of arguments, no cell phone, no basketball. I had to earn my priviliges,” Emma said. In other words, hard work and determination – characteristics she also applied to the basketball court. Emma, 5-foot-9, 155 pounds, cracked the starting lineup as a freshman and soon became a star. After years of losing, East Jessamine became a winner – from 17 victories four years ago to 23 this past season. Emma became the school’s first 2,000-point scorer and set the school’s all-time assist record. She was a Miss Basketball nominee and earned the prestigious Donna Murphy Award, awarded to the state’s most deserving female student-athlete. “Emma is tough, resilient, hardworking and determined,” Coleman said. “She wanted a better life for herself.” With the two of them on the same team, Emma has made that happen. ASBURY UNIVERSITY presents:

Educator of the Month April 2016

PAT WHITE N early four decades on the job and ELL teacher Pat White of Morton Middle School has lost none of her enthusiasm for what she calls the world’s greatest job. “Every day is different. You never know what help my students will need,” said White, who started her career in New Jersey 36 years ago. In 1988, she moved to Kentucky, was hired at Morton and has been there ever since. “One day, it will be help with science, the next day it will be help with social studies, and the next day... the cafeteria.” The cafeteria? “I had a Cambodian student years back who couldn’t understand why her classmates were putting ketchup on french fries,” she said. “I explained why and encouraged her to try it.” That leads into another story – and White is, without a doubt, a natural-born storyteller.

That same Cambodian student, like so many before and since, found themselves very much at home in White’s classroom. At the end of the school year, she approached her teacher with a gift. “It was a beautiful ring with garnets across it,” White said. “I told her that I really couldn’t accept it. But she insisted, so I started wearing it to school.” Several years passed and the student gradually faded from White’s life. Then, a friend told White that a Cambodian woman who did her nails in a salon in Elizabethtown, Ky., said that she was one of White’s former students. That summer, White drove to Elizabethtown and started visiting nail salons. “It took only three stops,” White said. “I saw her and she saw me, and we had a reunion. I brought the ring and offered it back to her. She said, ‘Absolutely not.’”

But White has a plan. “She just got married, so I’ll wait until she has her first daughter and then I’m going to give the ring to her daughter.” That connection to her students is a White hallmark. Through the years, she has taught students from dozens of countries — from Iraq to Brazil, Ethiopia to Indonesia. “She creates a safe place for her students and opens her heart to them,” Morton Principal Ronda Runyon said. “She has an amazing way to reach all her students.” Said White: “I create a welcoming place for my students. I have teachable moments all day long. My goal is to make sure that my students can go home and say they had a good day.”
