Raising Emotionally Intelligent Children
M
any parents are uncomfortable with strong negative emotions. Trying to be helpful, they offer their child distraction, rush to fix the problem and either minimize or deny the child’s feelings. Isn’t it our job to make our kids feel better? As it turns out, we do our children a better service when we coach them through difficult feelings and allow them to learn that they will come out on the other side. John Gottman outlines the following steps in his book, “Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child.” t Be aware of your child’s emotions t Recognize the emotion as an opportunity for intimacy and teaching t Listen empathetically and validate the child’s feelings t Help the child verbally label the emotions t Set limits while helping the child problem-solve. At the center of raising an emotionally intelligent child is the heart of the parent. Rather than simply trying to change behavior, emotional coaching is a way of being with a child during times when emotions are intense: mad, sad, glad, bad. One mother recognized that changing her mindset was instrumental in becoming an effective emotional coach for her
daughter. “When she got really angry or really upset about something, I would immediately think, ‘Oh, no! I’ve got to make it better!’” she said. “Once I stopped coming from my own fear and need to fix things, and recognized that instead this was a chance for us to grow closer and for me to teach her a valuable life skill, it was much easier to be with her through the tears.” Then her daughter was ready to come up with some ideas to solve the problem on her own. For many parents it isn’t easy to sit still while their child is seized by strong emotions, especially given the sometimes dizzying speed of life. Teaching emotional intelligence takes time. We parents also must face our own feelings if in childhood we learned to hide, avoid or deny our intense feelings. Still, teaching our children how to weather the storm of strong emotion may be the best gift we give them. It is worth the effort Y

circulating around the school system like crazy. For a week, every child I saw had tiny green germs dancing all over their hands and faces. Caring for a child with a stomach bug was reminiscent of wild college nights. You had that one friend who got out of control and you spent the night firemancarrying her to the bathroom and holding back her hair. Except this wild night lasted for five straight days. And there was no sobering up in the morning. I strategically placed trash cans around my house, but CeCe was 0-10 on hitting the target. She preferred to void her stomach directly on me. I never thought as a parent I would have designated “throwup clothes.”

How To Tell If Your Child Needs Brain Training
H
ow do you know whether your child is a candidate for brain training or tutoring? Tutoring is re-teaching material that a student missed the first time. Brain training rebuilds a student’s basic ability to read and learn through specifically designed and delivered training exercises. If you sit down with your child to review a school assignment and she

immediately understands the material, tutoring will work. But if simple explanation does not solve the problem or if the problem persists a few days later, an underlying skill weakness that tutoring cannot correct is likely present. Academic struggles will re-emerge because the root of the problem – weak cognitive skills – has not been addressed. For this student, brain training rather than tutoring could be the best answer. To understand the advantage of brain training, consider how different your expectations would be if you enrolled in a 12-hour lecture on piano basics versus 12 hours of piano practice with a good one-on-one piano coach. In the lecture you would be receiving information about the piano – you would be tutored. With the piano practice, you would end up actually

Seton’s award-winning arts program includes music, choirs and fine arts beginning in Pre-K, and band beginning in fifth grade. Starting in the fall of 2013, Seton will implement a new engineering program in grades K-5 called “Engineering is Elementary.” This initiative is a step toward becoming the first private school with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program in Lexington and the surrounding areas. Seton encourages innovation, problem solving, cooperative learning and critical thinking skills – especially crucial for the 21st Century workforce. The addition of an engineering curriculum will enhance these skills. Recognizing that giftedness comes in a variety of ways, students in second to fourth grades who excel in art and music
and have a strong work ethic are invited to participate in an Arts Enrichment course. Middle school students who are identified as gifted in reading or math are eligible to apply for the Curious Minds Academy. Curious Minds students choose a subject matter to explore and then develop a project that takes them beyond the walls of the classroom. The PeaceBuilder’s Program and the Peaceful Playground are part of the culture at Seton Through PeaceBuilder’s, students are taught conflict resolution, compassion, tolerance and forgiveness. These programs, combined with daily prayer, help to create a safe, faith-filled school where students learn in a caring environment. Sphinx Academy
New School Combines Montessori, Homeschooling, Special Education
W
afaa Elghoroury, a Lexington mother of three ages 7 to 14, has embraced a sampling of educational philosophies. She earned a medical degree in her native Egypt and a U.S. bachelor’s degree in special education. She is also trained in upper elementary and secondary Montessori education, and she has experienced homeschooling. “I appreciate all the educational approaches I have studied. Each has its advantages and disadvantages,” she said. “I wish to bring together the best in all these approaches.” Elghoroury has put that thought into practice with the foundation of a new school – the Sphinx Academy, a secondary school serving seventh-12th grades and opens in the fall of 2013 on Winchester Road.
She chose the name because like the mythological figure, her school is a hybrid of ideas, combining the independence of learning at one’s own pace associated with Montessori, the freedom of exploration associated with homeschooling, and the use of multiple intelligences strategies associated with special education. When in the classroom, students will follow the Connections Learning curricula, an online course provider that offers multiple levels for core subjects and over 120 electives. “We want to allow students to pursue interests they might not otherwise have the freedom to pursue,” Elghoroury said. “Because our students will not have to wait academically on others, we can improve each child’s chance of getting to where they can be their best.” Y

Teen Finds a Passion After Attending LCT Program
M
y older sister has always known what she wants to be when she grows up – a veterinarian and is now in college studying to be one. I’m the opposite of her. I’ve NEVER known what I wanted to be. I’ve always had lots of interests, but not one that I want to devote my whole life to. At least not yet. Since I was about 4, my mom has signed me up for a couple or even four or five weeks of camp each summer. I’ve tried gymnastics camps, outdoor camps, Girl Scout overnight camps, pottery camps, horseback riding camps and theatre camps. That’s what I find cool about summer camps. They give you an opportunity to explore things that you find interesting and might actually love to do. I’ve done camps at Lexington Children’s Theatre every summer since I was very small. The very first play I did was “Hansel and Gretel.” All the girls in the class played Gretel and all the boys played Hansel. Last summer I signed up for a spring break camp and three weeks of summer camp there. I got to play Wendy in “Peter Pan,” Miranda in “The Tempest” and even a character in one of my favorite books, “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.” It was then that I realized how much I really love acting. This past fall I decided to take my acting one step further and I auditioned for a part in “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” at LCT. Amazingly, I got a part!

By Melissa Evans
Melissa Evans found a home at the Lexington Children’s Theatre after attending summer camps there. Above, she appears in “The Tempest” during a summer camp show. At right, she transforms into a ghoul for a performance in “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” It was so different, performing in a real production at the Lexington Opera House. When the crowd cheers at the end, it’s incredible. I never would have done that if it wasn’t for all the camps I took. I also joined LCT’s troupe of high school actors called Company B, and this month I began a class on stage combat. I’ll also be working on the crew of “100 Dresses” as Lead Dresser. Before this, I never really thought about
doing anything involving theatre as a career, but now I would love to become a producer, director, actress or really anything involving theatre. And it all started with a week of camp! Camp boosted my confidence and made me see a path for my life I hadn’t even considered before. Melissa Evans, 14, is a freshman at Dunbar High School. appear all over her body. She was crying and felt sick to her stomach. Why? She had spent hours working on a homework packet, and it became an insurmountable mountain. The issue morphed into this scary beast that she felt was about to swallow her. As a parent I was puzzled by this scenario because my daughter’s test scores indicated she is gifted in math. As a professional, I know her dyslexia just made her math packet morph into a scary beast that was about to eat her. If you are puzzled by your bright child’s academic struggles, please join us on Monday, April 29, 6-9 p.m., at The Lexington School at 1050 Lane Allen Road. The Curious Edge is pleased to present Susan Barton, a nationally recognized expert in the field of dyslexia. This is an ideal opportunity to hear a leading dyslexia expert share the symptoms, explain intervention techniques and review classroom accommodations that are necessary. Parents, teachers and other professionals are welcome. Register online: www. thecuriousedge.com. Y

f the question above is one that keeps you awake at night, your child’s struggles may be a result of dyslexia. Dyslexia and other language processing disorders cause bright people to struggle. Why? Good readers activate highly interconnected neural systems in three regions of the brain. This intricate system is tightly bound together and stored. Skilled readers activate certain regions in less than 150 milliseconds. But when that processing center is delayed, the automaticity is lost. This causes over-activation of one area of the brain and underactivation of the remaining two. At first, bright children can learn to compensate, but given time and increased complexity of reading material, this ability is swallowed up by the monster preventing your child from activating neural pathways required for successful spelling and reading. One day, my 10-year-old daughter broke into a cold sweat and had red blotches

Against All Odds, Thomas Family Perseveres
The Geneva Thomas family: Dontaz, Saraya, Geneva and Chris
W
hen Geneva Thomas thinks of challenges she spells that with a
capital C. The challenges started even before she volunteered for Lexington Family’s Fit Family Challenge. But the challenge became even greater when the efforts of her and her children to meet their weight loss and fitness goals were threatened.

First, her daughter Saraya, 13, suffered a broken foot in September. Then Geneva broke her own foot in December, making exercise a real challenge for the family. A beloved aunt passed away in February. “She was like a second mom to me,” Geneva said. Then in March, the family moved from its apartment near Tates Creek Road to one closer to Geneva’s job at Kentucky Medical Services Foundation off Alumni Drive. Few things in life are as stressful as making a move, especially when three children are involved. Her youngest, Chris, is 3. And Geneva’s 18-year-old son, Dontaz, will join the Marines after his May graduation from high school. “It’s hard,” Geneva said. “That’s my baby. He is my right-hand man.” All of this upheaval has led to emotional eating, which was compounded by Geneva and Saraya’s birthdays in February which, of course, meant more eating. Despite all of these challenges, the Thomas family was determined to become more fit. The family met with Kathy Hampton of Body Slam Boot Camp. She taught them exercises they could do at home like the Russian Twist, Wall Squats and Mountain Climbing. Geneva and Saraya also joined The Roc, the recreation outreach center at

Immanuel Baptist Church. “We’re trying,” Geneva said. In fact, Geneva and Saraya have decided to train for the Bluegrass Mud Run, a muddy 5K obstacle race scheduled for Sept. 21 at Commonwealth Stadium. With the weather warming up, Geneva and Saraya have begun walking together at Kirklevington Park. The 0.9 mile Vita Course that includes balance beams and pull-up challenges have become a favorite. “We have so much fun,” Geneva said, “We compete with each other. See who can do more, go longer.” Thomas family members also altered their eating habits. After meeting with the professionals at the Family Practice Associates’ Learn. Live. Lose Program, the family made big changes in their daily routines.
The program, which offers personalized, medically supervised weight management, emphasizes healthy eating through the D.A.S.H. diet that is heavy on grains, vegetables and fruits. “We never ate breakfast before,” Geneva said. “But our trainer suggested cutting up frozen fruit and blending it with coconut water for something quick in the morning. “It’s really good and easy.” Geneva and Saraya are now grocery shopping together and paying careful attention to the ingredients in the food they buy. Saraya has learned to read food labels. “She will compare food and see what’s better for us,” Geneva said. Despite all the challenges to their success, Geneva says that she is happy with the Fit Family Challenge. “We are more conscientious now, we keep track of calories. We write down what we eat,” she said. This accountability is the key to the family’s success. “I ask myself, “Do I really need this?” Y

The Family That Boxes Together...
“O
By Kim Campbell
h well let’s just go eat somewhere.” How many times have you or your spouse said that after a long day at work? The children are worn out. You are worn out, and the whole family is carrying the stresses of the day. Later in the evening you take out your stress on each other and go to bed dreading the next day. Wouldn’t it be awesome to exchange that scenario for something more uplifting? Most people have heard, “The family that prays together, stays together.” I would like to add to that by saying, “After the family prays together, the family that boxes together, gets healthy together.” After a long day, imagine taking your family to a onehour Power Hour boxing fitness workout where all of you can work out together, release stress and create energy together. Families need healthy outlets for shared group activities. Even though most parents want to model a healthy lifestyle for their children, all too often they get so busy following their children’s sports activities that they neglect their own health. They sit on the sidelines, marveling at how much energy their children have. Implicitly, this teaches children that sports and good fitness are “child’s play.” Yet when parents take the lead in fitness, they improve their own self-confidence,
which helps children improve their self-esteem. TITLE Boxing Club Lexington (TBCL) offers families the Power Hour, a healthy activity that they can do together regardless of age, size or fitness level. This also allows family members to connect on a casual level, strengthen their relationships, and encourage and motivate each other. Doing a Power Hour side-byside removes distractions and focuses the family on learning a skill together. This creates a sense of ownership for each other’s health and fitness goals. Families only need to do the onehour Power Hour three times per week to see benefits. Because boxing is an edgy sport, it appeals to everyone’s wild side, especially that of teenagers. If teens can connect with parents on this level, they are more likely to believe that their parents will connect with them on other edgy subjects. The very nature of the challenging boxing workout lends itself to building unity among family members. Enduring challenges together strengthens bonds, builds inner strength and fosters the knowledge that family members can overcome adversity both at home and in outside situations. Kim Campbell and her husband Chris own TITLE Boxing Club Lexington. Kim has just completed her 11th week doing the workout three times per week. Y

Understanding & Treating Migraines in Children By Dr. Charles Ison
T
he word “migraine” comes from the Greek “hemikranion,” because this type of headache usually makes just one side of the front of the head hurt. Although many think of migraines as “adult” headaches, they are fairly common in children. Migraines are headaches characterized by throbbing or pounding pain. In adolescents or adults, this usually occurs in the front or on one side of the head. Younger children with migraines often complain of pain in both
sides of the front of the head. Other symptoms of migraines include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, sound sensitivity, light sensitivity, irritability and paleness. Exercise often makes the headache worse (unlike tension headaches). The headache can last from a few hours to longer than a full day. Up to 30% of migraines are preceded by an aura – a kind of sensory disturbance. This usually occurs up to 30 minutes before a migraine as a type of warning sign. Auras can consist of blurred or distorted vision; blind spots; flashing or moving lights or zigzag lines that are often brightly-colored; speech disturbances; motor weakness; or other sensory disturbances. These are called classic migraines. Those without auras, which account for up to 70% of occurrences, are called common migraines. It is now thought that migraines are caused by a malfunction of the brain and blood vessels, triggered at least in part by a change in the circulating chemicals in the brain. Migraines tend to run in families. About 70% of children with migraines have a close relative affected by them as
well. Around 2% of children have migraines by age 7. By age 15, the percentage raises to 7%-10%. They are more common in boys until puberty, and then they become more common in girls. Migraines are often triggered by stress, lack of sleep, menstruation, periods, caffeine, certain foods, skipping meals, flashing lights, alcohol, medications and even the weather. Avoiding these triggers when possible is often a large part of prevention. Medications can be used to stop migraines. These include painkillers, anti-nausea medicines and sedatives (since sleep helps them go away). A number of medications are used to prevent migraines if they occur frequently. When I was a boy, I remember watching my father suffering a migraine. He would lie down flat in the dark and place a washcloth over his eyes. We had to be very quiet and leave him alone. As an adult, I have the dubious honor of experiencing migraines myself. Fortunately, migraines in children can be treated and sometimes even prevented. Y

Conversation Project Forum At Hospice April 16
O
n Healthcare Decision’s Day, Tuesday, April 16, Hospice of the Bluegrass will host a public forum to discuss The Conversation Project. This nationally acclaimed program is dedicated to helping people talk about their wishes for end-of-life care long before it is needed. The forum runs 6-7:30 p.m. at the Grief and Loss Center at 2312 Alexandria Drive. The forum will include a light dinner and a panel of endof-life experts to discuss The Conversation Project. Notaries will be on-hand to formalize documents. According to The Conversation Project website,
“Too many people are dying in a way they wouldn’t choose, and too many of their loved ones are left feeling bereaved, guilty and uncertain. “It is time to transform our culture so we shift from not talking about dying to talking about it.” Gretchen Brown, Hospice President and CEO, said, “The goal of this forum is to suggest tools and timing to make these difficult conversations less stressful, so that our own wishes and those of our loved ones are expressed and respected.” The event is free and seating is limited so please register by April 12. Allergy Relief for Your Eyes
Y
our nose is running, your eyes are itchy and dry and you are sneezing your head off. Time to visit the allergist, right? Actually, you may want to visit an optometrist. Why? First you need to understand how your eyes operate normally and how they operate when you are having allergies. Your eyes produce two kinds of tears. Basal tears lubricate your eyes every time you blink. Reflex tears are released in response to irritation in your eye and are the tears you shed when you cry. During an allergic reaction, you produce too many of the reflex tears, washing away the basal tears that Dr. Rick Graebe Family Eyecare Associates & Children’s Vision and Learning Center 105 Crossfield Drive, Versailles www.myfamilyvision.com / 859.879.3665
lubricate your eyes. That is how your eyes end up raw and irritated even though you feel like they are watery. For these symptoms, an allergist can prescribe a general antihistamine to combat your allergies. These drugs often come with side effects such as drowsiness and dry mouth, and they don’t exclusively address the symptoms of the eyes. Dr. Rick Graebe, an optometrist at Family Eye Care Associates in Versailles, treats many patients this time of year at his Allergy Clinic. He offers a number of options when it comes to treating the eyes of allergy sufferers. “We can customize allergy treatments because we have five or six options to treat a patient’s symptoms,” he said. One tool Dr. Graebe has at his disposal is a microscope that can magnify the eye 50 times. This allows him to determine
whether the basal tear gland is clogged. If so, he can prescribe a safe, gentle eyelash shampoo that cleans the lashes of allergens and clears up the tear duct. The microscope also lets Dr. Graebe view the clear layer over the whites of the eye to look for allergic conjunctivitis. “This layer can swell to 10 times the normal thickness so that every time you blink your eye is irritated,” he said. Instead of a general anithistamine, Dr. Graebe can prescribe an eye drop antihistamine that goes right to the root of the problem with few or no side effects. Graebe himself uses these eye drops. “I rarely need over-the-counter allergy medications. When I have dry eyes, I use the drops,” he said. “People live in Kentucky love living here. “We help them enjoy the beauty of our state during allergy season without the symptoms of allergies.” Y
“We Change Lives” “Through eye therapy, my son is thriving. His reading, writing and self-esteem have gone up exponentially. He is so much happier.”

April 2013 Educator of the Month
Brandon Rexford: A Positive Purpose Science teacher Brandon Rexford of Henry Clay High in Lexington has created a welcoming atmosphere in his classroom -- especially if you like skeletons. The standard-issue human skeleton that stands at the front of the class is joined by a rogues’ gallery of hanging humans created by the students out of everything from aluminum foil to pipe cleaners. Earlier in the semester, 30 of these anatomical ghouls hung from the ceiling. Only five remain. The construction of the skeletons serves as an educational tool, and it’s also a contest based on their sturdiness. The one that lasts longest wins. That’s all part of the fun atmosphere that Rexford creates in his popular science classes. “Students take the class because of him,” said Becky Riley, another science teacher at the school. “I’m
not sure how much the students are really interested in anatomy, but his students are engaged every day in his class.” Rexford combines his engaging style with deep knowledge of his subject, a self-deprecating sense of humor and a calm demeanor. The halls may teem with teenage angst but inside his classroom calm and stability rule. “In 20 years, I’ve never once seen him act in a negative manner in any way, period,” Riley said. Like Riley, Rexford has worked at Henry Clay High for 20 years, starting as a fresh-faced, 22-yearold right out of college who was mistaken for a student. “A few days before classes started I asked when I would get my text book and I was told ‘On the first day of class, with all the other students,’” Rexford said with a laugh.

Two decades later, Rexford may still look boyish, but don’t let appearances distract you from his seriousness of purpose. Rexford is currently working on his National Board Certification and he re-instituted the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, opening it up to all students. “It’s not too much to say that it’s a mission for me to serve as a positive influence to the students I encounter and to keep my teaching fresh by interacting and involving students,” Rexford said. “My goal is whenever my last year comes, I enjoy teaching as much as I do now.”

Scholar Athlete of the Month You Must Remember This: Cameron Sings and Plays Golf
I
Cameron Holland • School: Dunbar High • Grade: 12th • Sport: Golf • Academics: Cameron has a 3.8 GPA in advanced classes, volunteers through his church youth group and sings at church. • Great-Grandparents: Maudie & Harold
A CALL FOR NOMINATIONS Call or e-mail us with your Scholar Athlete nominations. 223-1765 or john@lexingtonfamily.com

f you can’t find Cameron Holland on the golf course or acing another test at Dunbar High, the 17-yearold senior will probably be singing somewhere. Either at his home church, South Elkhorn Baptist, or at other area churches, Cameron is a frequent performer of hymns and contemporary Christian music. He’s been performing since he was 10, both in cantadas and in plays. Memorizing lyrics and dialogue could be challenging for some, but not for Cameron, whose excellent memory is the foundation of his academic success. He’s an honor roll student with a 3.8 GPA who will play golf next year at Transylvania University. He plans to major in pre-med or biology. Cameron sees perfect symmetry between biology and his religious background. “When you learn about the complexity of life, it helps you understand God’s complexity and power,” he said. Cameron was raised by his greatgrandfather Harold and his wife Maudie, who marvel at Cameron’s academic gifts. At a young age, Cameron developed a word association technique that gives him close to total recall. “I don’t have to study too much. I get it the first time in class and I’m a pretty
decent writer,” Cameron said. “But I’m a procrastinator. I seem to work best under pressure.” That comes in handy on the golf course. About the only thing he’s done longer than sing in church is play golf. Cameron’s great-grandfather introduced him to the game as soon as he learned to walk. Harold, a retired business owner, follows Cameron around the golf course religiously, claiming to see every shot of his high school career – even if sometimes he didn’t want to watch. Said Cameron with a good-natured laugh: “I can make the unexpected shot, but then I make the expected shot much harder than it needs to be.” Of course, at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Cameron makes up for shortcomings with tremendous length off the tee, routinely driving the ball 300 yards. He once drove the green at the 340yard second hole at the Greenbrier Country Club. Cameron has competed since he was 8, winning numerous junior events and earning All-City honors as a senior at Dunbar. His dream is to play professional golf, but medicine is a goal as well. Besides, don’t doctors still take a weekday afternoon off for a round of golf? Cameron will be right at home. Y
Two Scholar Athletes a year will be picked at random to share $2,500 in scholarships provided by Mike Pulliam, a Rector Hayden Realtor and instructor at Man O’ War Golf. Other contributors are Howard Smith of Southern Automotive Garage Equipment, Barry and Mike Barrett of Auto Excel, local CPA Kenny Frank and PBI Bank.
