his month marks another milestone in the evolution of Lexington Family Magazine, a publication that my wife, Dana Tackett, and I started in our living room when our son Jack was 5 years old. Much has changed since then. Dana left the magazine as a full-time employee a few years ago to resume her career in education. She still contributes to the publication as our publisher and long-term planner. Also, we have left our living room. After the magazine spilled into our dining room and threatened to take over our home, we opened our offices in south Lexington near Fayette Mall in 2006. And somehow along the way, Jack has grown up. He celebrates his 23rd birthday this month. He was the inspiration for the magazine when we started in 1997 and he now works for us part-time as one of our five delivery men who distribute the magazine to more than 700 locations in Central Kentucky. Jack also runs his own landscape business and is a high school umpire. Through the years, the look of the magazine has changed as well with our biggest move coming five years ago when we switched to the magazine format you have seen since 2010. That was the biggest change until now. Previously, the magazine was always printed on newsprint . No more. This issue marks our move to a full glossy magazine, an improvement that will benefit our readers and our advertising partners. No more inky smudges on the fingers of our 72,000 monthly readers, and everything in the magazine – photos, advertisements, etc. – will look cleaner and brighter. All this and the magazine is still free. We also remain committed to our mission – to be a forum for ideas, opinions and issues that affect the families of Central Kentucky. In our pages we give voice to those important messages, and we celebrate the lives of families in our community. Each month we deliver a calendar of family events, plus informative and reader friendly feature stories on topics such as childcare, education, raising a family, health and elder care issues. So, hey, look us over. And as always, we welcome your feedback. Let us know how we can better serve the families in our community.

High-Tech Version of ‘The Giver’ Hits LCT’s Main Stage

A Peaceful Morning Routine? It’s Possible

ome mornings – maybe many mornings – can start off feeling like a race to the finish line when you have young children. Everyone is harried, stressed, irritable, pressured... and ready to fall apart at any moment.

No one likes to begin the day with a big dose of stress hormones. Imagine starting off more days where there are smiles and good feelings. Here are some ideas to help you create a more peaceful morning routine. t Prep everything possible the night before, and put it on a “Launch Pad” near the exit door. This includes papers, backpacks, permission slips, shoes, coats, gloves, etc. Some things can even go in the car the night before. t Have the table set for breakfast right after dinner. Get advice and assistance from the children. Which cereals do they want out? (Keep them on a low shelf so they can reach them.) t Have milk in a container small enough for them to pour. If they need pouring lessons, use another time to master that skill. t Help them choose their clothes the night before and set them out. Giving simple choices such as “Blue jeans or red pants?” empowers them and gives them ownership of the process. t Be sure the routine is clear. Younger children do well with picture check lists.

As children get older, they might want to experiment with changing the order of things. Let them try it. As long as they are ready to go on time, it will work! t Battles getting your preschooler dressed in the morning? You can allow them to sleep in their clothes. Or let their teacher know that they may be arriving in their PJs one day, and have a set of clothes set aside for them to change in at school. t Give yourself more time. Focus on yourself and choose to be cheerful. Set a “snuggle alarm” instead of a “snooze alarm” with your child. Creating a warm connection first thing is a great way to start off the day on the right foot. t Make sure everyone is getting enough sleep. Children need 8-12 hours, and you need at least 6-8 hours to be at your best. Look for ways to prioritize time in the evenings, and be prepared to trim off any excesses like TV, etc. If it’s a show you can’t miss, DVR it. Remember, the most important thing is to stay calm, upbeat and connected to your child. When things go awry, take a deep breath, smile and say, “Let’s try that again!” Y

my new heartbeat

To know or not to know? That is a huge question for expecting parents. The majority of moms I know chose to learn the gender of their babies at the first opportunity. Some parents even pay a good chunk of money for private ultrasounds just so can they know “boy or girl” a few weeks earlier than the sonogram with their doctor. I understand the urgency.

the point in stressing over it? The big reveal in the delivery room was also great motivation, she said. All the nurses and doctors were so excited to find out, and she pushed that much harder because she wanted to finally hear her husband shout, “It’s a _____!” I see both sides of the argument, but when that 20week ultrasound rolls around, I don’t think I’ll be able to help myself. Garrard County Smokes the Field Five-Member Team Wins Keep It Real Top Prize

T

alent certainly runs in this Garrard County family. Like his brother before him, Coty Sanford and a team of four classmates took home first place in the recent Keep It Real Remix video contest. Coty’s brother, Parker Young, won three consecutive titles from 2007-2009 and now works for Disney Studios in Florida. In their first try, Coty and his team produced the 30-second video, “3000,” an anti-tobacco commercial that earned the team $400 in first-place money. Coty split the winnings with Christian Cain, Daryl Hickle, Alex Montgomery and Dalton Smith, fellow sophomores at Garrard County. The video features stop action and is interspersed with still photographs and a voiceover, all presented in a professional format. Which surprised the boys following the two-hour filming session one afternoon in November. “The filming seemed chaotic and afterward we were shaking our heads, saying, ‘I don’t know what we have,’” Dalton said. Then came the magic of the editing room. Coty filmed the commercial with his iPhone 5s and edited it in his father’s recording studio. Robbie Sanford plays piano in a country band. On a MacBook Pro with the program Adobe After Effects, Coty and Dalton edited the footage into a 30-second

package. Coty also supplied the voiceover that explains that every day 3,000 teens try their first cigarette. In their video, one of the boys gathered refuses the offer of a smoke. (To view “3000” and all the winning videos, visit www.keep-it-real.us.) After they entered the contest came the waiting game. Just before the awards ceremony in February, a Garrard County High official told the boys that they had an award. So, Coty and Christian drove with their parents to the Kentucky Theatre. As one award after another was presented and the boys’ names were not called, tensions rose. “My parents were looking at me like, ‘Did you really win something?’” Christian said. Finally, with only one award to go, the good news was announced. “That was a real shocker,” Coty said. “My first thought was to button my suit.” The next day at school was like any other. They were hardly greeted us conquering heroes. Then classmates saw the video on television. Winning videos aired on television stations throughout the region and were shown as part of pre-show ads in local cinemas. “Once our friends saw the video on TV, we got some attention,” Coty said. “Obviously, they were surprised.” A month after the awards ceremony and the boys still hadn’t divided the money.

Keep It Real winners (left to right) Dalton Smith, Christian Cain and Coty Sanford. Not pictured: Daryl Hickle and Alex Montgomery. They did agree that Coty would receive half of the winnings, knowing he would use the money to buy more equipment. There are more video projects in their future. “This was fun and we want to do it again,” Dalton said. Y

Keep It Real REMIX Hands Out $2,425 to Winners

T

he winners of the Keep It Real: REMIX Video Contest were announced at the recent awards program at the Kentucky Theatre where high school students shared $2425 in winnings. This year, 88 videos were submitted from students throughout Kentucky. The top winner, “3000,” was produced by Garrard County High students and has aired on television stations throughout the region. The video also has been shown as part of pre-show ads in local cinemas through National Cinemedia. The People’s Choice Award went to an entry from Lexington Catholic High School titled “It’s Time to Wake Up.” This award is given to the video that

received the most votes during the online contest, which ran from January 12-23. The Best Direction Award was presented to Eastside Technical Center for “Drugs Destroy.” These students will have the opportunity to work with filmmaker and Keep It Real Founder Arthur Rouse from Video Editing Services. The Keep It Real campaign is a youthdriven community effort to educate young people concerning the risks of underage drinking, prescription drug use, and nicotine. The guiding premise behind this campaign has been that youth are more likely to understand the message when they help design the message.

Shy Kids Can Suddenly Blossom In the Right Environment

By Lynne Willis

W

e all know that kids need to feel good about themselves, to be proud of their abilities and accomplishments, to be accepted socially. And they need the right opportunities for that to happen. Parents often strive to provide experiences to boost their children’s self- esteem. Organized team sports, music or voice lessons, even the right clothes and shoes are attempts at helping kids grow in self-confidence. Self-esteem can be a catalyst to living a full life and achieving more than we ever believed possible for ourselves. And it isn’t just about standing out as an individual or rising to the position as “the best.” A sense of self-worth and pride can emerge from being a part of a group accomplishment. That’s why summer camp is beneficial in building self-esteem. For one thing, summer camp gives children a shot at trying new things. Children get to take risks that make them courageous and confident that they can make good choices. Camp also can provide an atmosphere where perseverance, work ethic and positive attitudes can grow. 16 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

Children of all ages flex their imagination muscles at one of Lexington Children’s Theatre’s many summer camps. Campers also work together to solve problems and collaborate on projects. Regardless of ability, experience or talent, children are reminded that they are capable and that they can believe in themselves. As campers work in community, they realize they matter to others. Brittany Kaiser, the marketing coordinator at Legacy All Sports in Lexington, explains how kids often enter camp feeling like they don’t know much. “In a fun and encouraging environment they learn new things quickly and come away feeling like they have accomplished something,” she said. Kids at camp are also free from their parents’ assessments of how well they have performed. “It’s amazing to see kids who’ve been labeled shy by their parents or grandparents come into our Performance Workshops,” says Adam Montague, Education Associate at

Lexington Children’s Theatre. “After a week of exploring, learning and becoming their character, the ‘shy’ kids become confident and even loud, traits we want in our actors.” Between 2001 and 2004, the American Camp Association conducted national research with more than 5,000 families from 80 ACA-accredited camps to see if they could prove that camp is beneficial to children. Parents responded that their children grew significantly in the following areas: independence, leadership, friendship skills, social comfort, peer relationships, adventure and exploration, values, decision making… and self-esteem. As you think about sending your children off to camp this summer, you may want to consider what camps will do the best job of promoting their self-esteem. And your children just might come home being more confident than when the summer started. Y

By John Lynch achary Larkin, 14, began struggling with letters in the first

grade. He pushed through but by second grade he was confused about the sound that each letter made. Then, he was diagnosed with ADHD, and he was assured he would eventually catch up. Zachary, with the help of his mother, Cinnamon of Lawrenceburg, kept pushing through each grade. But by seventh grade, things fell apart. Zachary was unhappy and homework was a constant struggle. He didn’t want to read – words on a page were like a guessing game for him. He could not do multiplication or division. He could barely add and subtract. His mother moved Zachary to Frankfort Christian Academy in hopes that the smaller, private setting would help. Ruth Fitzgerald, the Student Services teacher at FCA, asked if Zachary had ever been tested for dyslexia. Curious Edge was called and Zachary was tested. The test results devastated Cinnamon. Her son was dyslexic. She felt hopeless – all her dreams for Zachary seemed gone. She felt that she had “lost the child that she had dreamed of.” Initially, Zachary began going to Curious Edge three

Zachary Larkin times a week for an hour. In the summer, he started a more rigorous schedule of five days a week for an hour to 90 minutes. Because of his struggles he had become introverted and quiet. As he worked at Curious Edge, his extroverted personality returned. And he was smiling again. English seemed like a foreign language. He now knows how to read. Just last week he scored an 88 on an English test. “We were ecstatic,” Cinnamon said. Zachary calls Kimberly Hudson of Curious Edge his second mom. “I know she loves him as much as I do,” Cinnamon said. “I’m so overwhelmingly proud of him. We have healed over the past 18 months. “If it hadn’t been for Kimberly at Curious Edge, I don’t know where we would be. “She is truly a godsend.” Y

Brain Training Can Help College Students, Too

s most parents know by now, if your high school senior has not chosen a college, he has until May 1 to decide. Once the selection is made and your child is enrolled in college, the next step is making the transition from high school to college. The first year in college can be the most challenging. New freedom, new friends, new surroundings and college class work can be daunting for any 18-year-old. When students start college, they face many choices – from individual classes to when and where to study. In the absence of the

Dr. Graebe’s Full Service Eye Care Center

W

hen trying to get a law changed, it helps when one of your patients is the governor of the state. So it was in the early career for Dr. Rick Graebe, a behavioral optometrist in Versailles. Dr. Graebe started practicing in 1984 with Dr. Gordon Shaw, who seemed to specialize in governors. At the time, the practice treated two governors – one sitting and the other retired. And during the 1980s, the state amended the law, allowing optometrists to treat eye ailments such as pink eye, glaucoma and other eye pathologies that they had been trained to treat. Dr. Rick Graebe Family Eyecare Associates & Children’s Vision and Learning Center 105 Crossfield Drive, Versailles www.myfamilyvision.com / 859.879.3665

Previously, only ophthalmologists handled those procedures. It helped that the sitting governor knew first-hand the skill and expertise of optometrists. Fast forward three decades and Dr. Graebe’s practice in Versailles – Family Eyecare Associates – is a beneficiary of that law. Dr. Graebe specializes in performance optometry, including Vision Therapy, an effective nonsurgical treatment that is a kind of physical therapy for the eyes, brain and body. “When a patient says I’m having difficulty doing task x, y or z, we can help them,” Dr. Graebe says. “We see so many patients that nobody else can help.” Those patients come from all over the state and beyond, covering more than 300 zip codes. Although Dr. Graebe specializes, his practice doesn’t.

It is a full service center with a staff of 11, including three optometrists – Graebe, Dr. Justin Coleman and Dr. Regina Callihan. The office also works with five specialists covering a wide range of surgical procedures. Inside the 4,300 square feet of office space, Family Eyecare Associates offers a dry eye clinic, allergy eye clinic and care for other eye diseases, including macular degeneration. Dr. Callihan ran the low vision clinic at Retinal Associates in Lexington while working with Dr. Graebe. Dr. Callihan is now practicing full time at Family Eyecare. Along with prescribing glasses and contacts, the practice also offers a myopia prevention program. “We offer more services under one roof than anywhere else in the state,” Dr. Graebe said. “In fact, if you can get a better eye exam anywhere else, your exam with us is free.” Y

“We Change Lives” Making the RIGHT decision for your family’s eye care is critical.

Measles Vaccine Does Not Cause Autism

T

here is currently a measles outbreak here in the U.S. We had eliminated the disease in this country in 2000, but thanks to the declining immunization of our children, it has made a comeback. The MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine is very effective in preventing measles but only when it is given. Measles is caused by an extremely contagious virus that is easily spread through the air. One to two weeks after exposure to it, a non-immune person will come down with high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. About two to three days later white spots start to appear inside the mouth. A red, flat rash begins on the head about three to five days later and spreads over the body. Fever can then go higher than 104 degrees. These symptoms last a few days. One in 10 people get an ear infection that may lead to permanent hearing loss. Another 10% get diarrhea; 5% get

Hospice of the Bluegrass

N

Hospice Volunteers Give Selflessly ational Volunteer Week is April 12-18 and organizations

across the country are celebrating the gifts of time and talent that individuals selflessly give to help others. Nowhere is this commitment more valuable and heartfelt than in hospice – and Hospice of the Bluegrass is thriving in this community thanks to its volunteers. Even when a person is dying, there can still be much living to do. Hospice makes that possible by bringing care, compassion and hope to patients and families facing life-limiting illness. Nearly 1,000 trained volunteers support people during the journey at life’s end and make the mission of Hospice of the Bluegrass possible. Hospice volunteers spend time at the bedside, help out family caregivers, participate with outreach efforts, assist in the office, provide fundraising support and much more. They give of themselves to make life better for others. “Across the country, more than 355,000

dedicated volunteers provide more than 16 million hours of service every year,” said J. Donald Schumacher, president of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. “Hospice as we know it in the United States would not exist without the volunteers who do so much.” Most hospice volunteers choose to give their time helping others because of their own experiences with the compassionate care hospice provided to their dying loved one. During National Volunteer Week, Hospice of the Bluegrass celebrates the gifts of its volunteers that make our community a better place. ound for pound, Reilly Teal of Dunbar High might be the toughest female soccer player in the state. All of 5-foot-4 and 135 pounds, the Dunbar High senior is a four-year starter, two-time Bulldog MVP, twotime All-City player and was named All-State in 2014. Reilly, who will play at Indiana State in the fall, earned those accolades on the strength of her defense and versatility. She played forward, back and midfield for Dunbar, always guarding the opponent’s best player. That often created major size discrepancies. “She would get hammered by these bigger players and I had to look away,” her mother Missy said. “But she always proved how tough she was.” Reilly’s father Scott agreed. And as a federal agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, he knows about toughness. He once hopped out of the family car in Harrodsburg and raced through the woods as he tracked down a suspect who had assaulted a police officer. “I thought it was awesome,” said Reilly, who will major in criminal justice in college. Said Scott: “Reilly has such grit and determination. She takes on any challenge and sacrifices her body.”

“I’ve never backed down from a slide tackle,” Reilly said with a mischievous grin. Captain of the Dunbar team, Reilly led the Bulldogs by example, just as she did with her club teams, which have won seven state titles. Her biggest thrill in soccer? “My favorite memory is being the first Dunbar girls team to win the Region.” A workout enthusiast, Reilly ran on the school track team through her junior year. She has run numerous youth triathlons, raced through an eight-mile trail course and participated in a mud run, color run and a zombie run. Reilly’s winning ways translate to the classroom. She has a 4.72 weighted GPA, has taken eight A.P. classes, scored 29 on the ACT and was Academic All-State four straight years. She is a National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society member and was president of the junior class. Perhaps what has brought Reilly the most joy is her work with those with disabilities. She has volunteered with the Special Olympics and with TOPSoccer, LYSA’s program for players with disabilities of all ages. “I love those kids,” she said. “I am learning so much from them. They change your perspective on life.” Y

Two Scholar Athletes a year will be picked at random to share $3,500 in scholarships provided by Mike Pulliam, a Rector Hayden Realtor and instructor at Man O’ War Golf. Other contributors are Patrick Forrester and Howard Smith of Southern Automotive Garage Equipment, Barry and Mike Barrett of Auto Excel, local accountant Kenny Frank, Dairy Queen franchise owner Paul Wright, retired attorney Ron Sirna and PBI Bank.

ASBURY UNIVERSITY presents: April 2015

— Educator of the Month —

BEVERLY HENDERSON:

Helping Students Seek Success After 31 years as an educator – 22 in administration – Beverly Henderson was talked out of retiring by Dunbar High Principal Betsy Rains, who lured Henderson with… a salary cut? That’s right. Henderson left her position as the director of special education for Nelson County schools to become a behavior specialist at Dunbar in 2011. “It was a lower-paying job, but I missed the kids,” she said. “My dream was to see public education be more kid friendly in my lifetime.” Henderson is putting that dream in to practice, sometimes it’s one student at a time. Her charge was to identify which kids were underachieving. During the day, she works with a diverse group, including students in inschool suspension. Her students come from different ethnicities, socio-economic status, and different school subcultures, like athletes, ASBURY UNIVERSITY

techies, magnet students, etc. One outgrowth of Henderson’s work is the Dunbar Den. She took a room off the library and converted into a student-run coffee shop. Her students furnished it with school hand-me-downs and wood tables and chairs built and decorated by the students. From 7:30 to 8:20 a.m., students cash in tokens from teachers as acknowledgement of achievement or good behavior for a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate, all prepared and served by Henderson’s students. After school starts, students stay to clean up and review inventory. Running a coffee shop presents teachable moments every day. “This is project-based, mastery learning where students who don’t typically come together learn to appreciate each other.” Hannah Huffman, a Dunbar senior, is one of those students.

“It’s really cool to see students coming together,” she said. “I love working with Mrs. Henderson. She is sweet, understanding and knows how to work with all kinds of kids.” That’s why Principal Rains hired Henderson. “She has brought an excitement and a sense of ownership to the kids,” Rains said. “I want every kid to know they can define their success,” Henderson said. “I hope every kid wakes up and is glad to go to school.” That’s the case for Henderson. Every day is as fresh as the coffee in the Dunbar Den.
