kicked out a message in Morse code! He said he’s sleeping right now, but you can talk some other time.” • The Weight Comments Women are inarguably sensitive about their weight, and people seem to forget that fact applies throughout pregnancy. It’s actually an even more volatile issue during those nine months. Yet this won’t stop people from saying “You’re so big!” Just remind yourself these comments apply only to your stomach.
• Up Close and Personal Upon becoming pregnant, you unwittingly induct yourself into a society of mothers who believe there are no personal boundaries between moms, even if you are virtual strangers. Mothers love to relive their childbearing stories with pregnant women, and no details are spared. Get ready for the invasive questions about mood swings, sexual urges, constipation and bodily fluids. Those questions are followed by unsolicited advice and horror stories you would prefer to never hear. Do your best to grin and bear it. Chances are you will be on the other end of the conversation with an

• Infantilization If you enjoy being pampered, this side effect may thrill you. But some women dislike being treated as if they are made of glass. Shopping bags carried for you is a nice touch, but don’t be surprised if you aren’t allowed to carry your own purse. Or if every time you rise from a chair someone jumps to hold your arm. Get ready to hear, “No, no sweetie, let me do that.” It may cross the border from courtesy and into the land of overprotective, but try to appreciate it while you can. It may be frustrating that your friends won’t let you drive and constantly hold your hand. But soon enough you will have a real infant on hand and dream of the days when people offered to do your dishes. t

ou’ve heard it a million times already, but all the clichÊs are true -eating a healthy and well-balanced diet is one of the best ways to care for your future little one. Follow these dietary guidelines:
u Avoid junk foods that are high in salt, sugar and fat.
u Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, grains and foods rich in calcium such as yogurt, cheese and milk. u Take your vitamins -- Kentucky has a high incidence of spina bifida, so take folic acid supplements and eat foods rich in folic acid such as leafy green vegetables, oranges, cantaloupe, bananas, milk and grains. u Cut back on caffeine -- that means coffee, tea and especially soda. u Avoid alcohol entirely. u Go green -- Look for organic foods that are free of pesticides.

Questions to Ask Your Ob/Gyn
ou’ve taken the home pregnancy test and it’s positive. Congratulations! It’s important to schedule a visit to your Ob/Gyn as soon as possible.
There are so many questions spinning around your head – Will I have a boy or a girl? When am I due? What will labor and delivery be like? Before you see your obstetrician for the first time, be sure to make a list of questions and include the following:
1) How much weight should I gain during my pregnancy? A woman of average weight should gain between 25-35 pounds during her pregnancy.
2) Which over-the-counter drugs can I take while I am pregnant? It is crucial that you inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, either daily or occasionally. This includes any dietary supplements, herbal remedies, OTC pain medications or allergy medications. Find out then which medications you can safely take for a cold, headache or stomach upset.
3) Are there restrictions on traveling while I am pregnant?
Most women experiencing a

healthy pregnancy will have no travel restrictions.
4) What tests will I undergo during my pregnancy? Routine tests include blood and urine tests. Amniocentesis or chorionic villus also may be necessary.
5) When and with whom will I discuss my birth plan? Make sure to have an in-depth discussion with your obstetrician early on about your birth plan. Your choices should be noted in your chart in case your doctor is absent during delivery.
6) Who will deliver my baby? If your doctor is unavailable for delivery, meet the substitute doctor and schedule a pre-natal with him or her.
7) What are the signs that something is wrong with my pregnancy? Ask your doctor for a list of warning signs of complications with your pregnancy. Make sure you know what symptoms should prompt an immediate call to the doctor. t 15
exploring adoption
15 Things You Need to Know About Adoption The following tips should help you find a reliable, trustworthy adoption agency. 1) ASK for referrals from friends, adoptive parent groups, clergy, doctors and adoption attorneys. 2) COMPILE a list of the agencies that appear to meet your basic requirements (type of adoption, domestic, international). 3) VERIFY the license. Call your state adoption agency licensing specialist to make sure the license is current and no complaints have been filed. 4) DO a background check. To check for complaints and lawsuits, ask the licensing specialist of the Better Business Bureau, and/or your state Attorney General’s office. 5) ASK the agency about adoptive parent requirements concerning marital status, age, income and health. 6) ASK about pre-adoption and post-adoption services, and services provided to birth parents. 7) ASK about up-front fees. 16
Be on guard against agencies that ask for large fees before any services are provided. 8) REQUEST written materials and references from client families. An agency is not likely to refer you to someone who had a bad experience. 9) ASK if the agency offers a free orientation. 10) ASK how long the agency has been in business and how many adoptions they’ve completed. Don’t forget to ask about the percentage of adoptions that have failed. 11) ASK the length of the average wait. 12) ASK for an itemized list of costs and fees, including expenses for the placing parents, and understand clearly what is included and what is not. 13) ASK for the agency’s professional affiliations and standards of practice. 14) TRUST your instincts. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. 15) DON’T work with an agency you haven’t personally investigated. Information in this article is courtesy of www.Adopting.org t baby bump 2011

Newborns Spend 75% of Their Time in Cribs
A
By Bud Spoerl, owner of Baby’s Room & Kids Too
fter having been provided a home for nine months, your baby is ready for the transition to sleeping quarters that aren’t so confining. Your choice of a crib will serve as more than just a place for Baby to spend the night. This will become her source of comfort and
security. And as your baby grows, her crib will provide a happy place to play and coo before going to sleep, or anxiously awaiting that first greeting of the day from Mom or Dad. Keep these tips in mind when shopping for your baby’s first “home.”
u When choosing a convertible crib, be sure that coordinating items such as dressers, night stands and mirrors are available for later purchases. u Be aware of crib recalls and buy from a store where you feel confident in the quality and reputation. For information on crib recalls, visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission at www.cpsc.gov. u Avoid buying a crib at a garage sale or using a hand-me-down. Many of these have missing or damaged hardware or parts. u Choose a good firm crib mattress. A high-quality, firm mattress will be your most important crib-related purchase. u Be sure there are adequate height adjustments for the mattress. Shorter parents may find purchasing a crib with a “safety drop gate” on the side will provide easier access to Baby. Do not purchase a crib with a “drop side.” u When Baby is put to sleep, remove all quilts, comforters, pillow-like products and stuffed animals. Cover Baby with nothing more than a thin coverlet or crib blanket. For newborns, consider swaddling. For additional info on crib safety, visit www.jpma.org. t 18

Fetal Photography: Miracles in 3D/4D
F
or pregnant moms, little can match the joy and bonding power of a photo of their unborn child. Thanks to Lexington Fetal Photography, expecting parents can see their unborn baby up close and personal -- and in 3D/4D color. Owners Doug and Cindy Herald, parents of three children themselves, understand the excitement and desire parents have to see their unborn child. Lexington Fetal Photography gives families the chance to see their baby’s facial expressions while gaining assurance by counting fingers and toes. “We offer a warm, friendly environment that doesn’t feel medical and cold,” said Cindy.
www.BabyBumpLexington.com
At private sessions, expectant moms can bring as many family members as they like inside the imaging room and watch on a giant flat screen monitor. Parents can learn the gender of an unborn child through imaging at 16 weeks when fetuses can raise their hands, suck thumbs, smile and frown, yawn and stick out their tongues. “It’s gratifying when our clients see the miracle that God has given them,” said Cindy. Opened in December 2006, Lexington Fetal Photography was the first in Lexington and is the state’s only exclusive imaging center. Sessions are available by appointment only. Choosing the Right Car Seat By Joyce Kara, product manager for Britax Child Safety, Inc.
A
car seat is one of the most important purchases you will make for your child. Adequate product and safety information will help guide your investment in a seat that offers a correct fit and the greatest protection for your little backseat driver. Before you choose a seat, consider the various models appropriate for your child’s age. u Infant car seats accommodate babies from birth to 30 pounds and are to be used only in the rear-facing position. u Convertible car seats can be used rear facing from birth and then “convert” to forward facing for toddlers. Convertible car seats are used for the longest period of time once a child outgrows his infant seat. u Combination booster seats are for forward-facing use after a child has outgrown his convertible car seat. They

feature a five-point harness that can later be removed, turning the seat into a belt-positioning booster. u Belt-positioning booster seats rely on the vehicle seat belt system to keep the older child restrained. Once you determine the car seat that is most appropriate for your child, invest in a seat equipped with features and technologies that manage crash forces away from your child and minimize the risk of injury. Ask the store to demonstrate and explain the features of each seat.
Head & Side Impact Protection Head injury is the leading cause of vehicular death for children up to 12 years old. Approximately one in four crashes occurs from the side, and these crashes result in significantly higher injury rates than front or rear crashes. As a result, look for a car seat that has: baby bump 2011
getting ready for baby u A lower center of gravity that creates stability. u Steel bars that strengthen the connection to the vehicle and reduce forward flexing of the seat. u Energy-absorbing tether that anchors the top of the car seat. u An energy-absorbing foam liner over a stiff structure. u Side walls that shield the child from vehicle intrusion. u Deep head and side wings for head and body containment. u An adjustable head restraint to minimize lateral head movement. Ease-of-use features help adults secure the car seat correctly each and every time. And children should stay rear facing and in a harnessed seat for as
long as possible. Look for: u A quick-adjust head restraint and no-rethread harness to easily adjust the harness shoulder height. u Removable cover for easy cleaning. u Push-button LATCH connectors that switch easily from rear to forward facing. u Built-in lock-offs that help provide a simple and tight installation. u Convertible car seats that offer the highest rear-facing weight limits. u Design features such as a roomy seating area and high-density foam to gently cushion your child. u And most importantly, never buy a used car seat that may have been in an accident previously, or one that is missing the manufacturer’s name, model or registration. t
What is a JPMA? (And How Do I Use It?)
A
lthough the JPMA (Juvenile Product Manufacturers Assn.) is not something you actually bring into your home, its presence can ensure that your baby’s first years will be safe. JPMA is a non-profit association, funded by the juvenile products industry, that promotes the safe use and selection of juvenile products. JPMA has developed a nationally recognized certification program covering 17 different categories of baby products, from cribs to bath seats. The JPMA Certification Seal signifies that products have passed rigorous testing and comply with safety standards. To help ensure this safe environment for your baby, the JPMA has created an informative booklet “Safe & Sound for Baby.” www.BabyBumpLexington.com
Here you’ll find hundreds of tips on the selection and safe use of the many products you’ll want and need for your baby, including cribs, car seats, strollers, high chairs, safety gates and more. The free booklet can be obtained at Baby’s Room & Kids Too in Lexington (www.babysroomky.com) or at the JPMA web site, www.JPMA.org. Additionally, the JPMA offers a few basic facts to always remember: Read instructions and warnings, mail back registration forms, avoid buying second-hand products, inspect products frequently and discontinue use when appropriate. And always remember that juvenile products are not a substitute for parental supervision - never leave your baby unattended. t 21

at Baby’s Room & Kids Too
E
verything about the children’s furniture store, Baby’s Room & Kids Too, screams family. Make that whispers family. After all, cribs, baby mattresses and bunk beds cover the 13,000 square feet of floor space. And you don’t want to wake baby. The family behind Baby’s Room & Kids Too is the Spoerls. For 28 years they have served Central Kentucky families at the most joyous time of their lives – the arrival of a new baby. As young parents themselves, Donna and Bud Spoerl opened a children’s clothing store in 1982, and Baby’s Room 10 years later. Two moves later, Baby’s Room & Kids Too in the Kmart Plaza on Nicholasville Road has become a local landmark for new families. 26
Customers can be assured that whenever they visit the store, an owner will always greet them -either Donna, Bud or their 30-yearold daughter Kristin, who literally grew up in the business. She appeared in her first advertisement when she was 4 and provided the child’s voice on radio ads. Kristin worked at the store while earning a degree in marketing at UK. The Spoerls are the Three Musketeers at Baby’s Room – all for baby bump 2011
one and one for all. “We all love the business,” Bud said. “To Kristin, family is very important. We’re tickled to death that she works here. “There is no one I would trust more than Kristin.” The motto at Baby’s Room & Kids Too is “Baby to teen and everything in between.” Along with cribs and mattresses, the store sells bunk beds, dressers and desks for older children. Plus, Baby’s Room features items not found in big box stores such as the popular Nap Nanny, wall decor, fun furnishings for toddlers and more. The Spoerls also put safety -- for babies and children -- as their top priority. “We’re willing to explain how to use car seats and the proper selection and
use of all products,” Bud said. “That’s the benefit of us all being owners. We are here for the customers. We can be nimble and responsive to the marketplace. “We put on the floor what people in this community like and want.” That wisdom derives from doing business in Lexington for nearly three decades. “We have parents who remember coming to our original children’s clothing store as children with their parents,” Bud said. “That makes you feel good, knowing you must be doing something right. “We feed off the excitement of our customers. “We’re always dealing with people who are approaching the happiest phase of their lives – having a baby. That’s the best part of the job.” t

Breastfeeding: What Newborn Babies Need! By Doraine Bailey Doraine Bailey, MA, IBCLC, is the Breastfeeding Support Services Program Coordinator at the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department. Contact her at 859-288-2348 or at dorainef.bailey@ky.gov.

abies are born to breastfeed. Unless they are born early or are sleepy from a lot of birth medications, newborns can usually find the breast and start feeding with very little help. Babies just need practice and minimal interference from pacifiers or bottles in the early weeks. Parents can make it easier by taking a breastfeeding class during the third trimester, and getting help from family, friends, and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant or La Leche League Leader. Breastfeeding Benefits for Baby 1. Lower chance for food poisoning 2. Right food for brain growth 3. Fights off infections such as cold, flu, tummy-ache 4. 100% natural and easy to digest 5. Lower chance for food allergies 6. Less likely to be overweight as a child 7. More holding and snuggling help build trust and health 8. Poop is soft and doesn’t smell 9. Less stress because Mom responds faster to calls for help and food 10. Fewer trips to doctor or emergency room
42
Breastfeeding Benefits for Mom 1. Free food for Baby 2. Sucks off body fat from pregnancy 3. Get more sleep because nighttime feeding is faster 4. Less work once you learn how 5. Builds a healthy baby, so fewer worries 6. Less to prepare and pack when you’re out-and-about with Baby 7. Fast comfort for a fussy or hungry baby 8. Miss less school, work or social events due to a sick baby 9. Great excuse for snuggling with Baby 10. Builds a unique relationship with your baby that you can be proud of!

ention cloth diapers to your mother or grandmother and they are sure to tell you a nightmare story... ... Pails full of smelly diapers, leaky plastic pants, expensive plumbing problems. But that is all in the past, says Cerise Bouchard, owner of Mother Nurture, and a cloth diapering-mommy. “There are so many different options now,” explains Bouchard, “And cleaning up is much easier.” The biggest changes are the diaper covers. Instead of crinkly plastic pants with elastic at the waist and legs, moms can use diaper wraps -- cotton or laminated polyester covers that wrap around baby and secure with Velcro or special snaps. These covers come in plain white or a variety of fashion patterns and colors. Inside, the wraps offer several options. Some covers require you to use a prefolded diaper inside. Others have www.BabyBumpLexington.com
the diaper already sewn inside. A third option is a pocket diaper with a pre-sewn in pad plus a pocket to insert an extra layer for more protection.
C
lean up is easier with today’s cloth diapers as well. You can purchase flushable rice paper liners for diapers that makes it easier to clean up the mess. And they’re fully biodegradable. What to do with that dirty diaper once it’s off the baby? Drop it in your diaper bucket, but be sure to buy one with a lid. Bouchard recommends washable liners that you can purchase or make for your diaper pail. Buy two, and then you can just drop the dirty one in the wash with the diapers. Washing up does take a bit more time. Is your child in daycare? Check with your daycare provider to see if they will accept kids wearing cloth diapers. Although cloth diapering does require an initial investment in diapers and wraps, the savings over the long-term make this an inexpensive as well as an environmentally prudent choice. t 43

A
Strike a Pose
s any new parent will tell you, there is nothing more amazing to look at than a newborn baby. Babies make such a range of faces and look so cute doing it -- when they yawn, or hiccup or make their first tentative smile. You keep that camera close at hand to try to catch all those looks, but sometimes your photos don’t turn out as fantastic as your newborn. Here are some tips from the pros on how to best capture the magic of a new baby. 1) Use Fabrics. Look for blankets and fabrics with lots of texture – big chunky knits, fuzzy fleeces and velvets. These fabrics will give you good contrast between the baby and the background. Drape the blanket over a bean bag chair for an easy way to pose baby. 2) Use Natural Light. Pick a spot in your house with plenty of soft natural light and turn off your flash.
3) Photograph at Naptime. Don’t wait for baby to be awake and alert. Sometimes the best time to photograph newborns is while they are asleep (and easily posed). 4) Show Some Skin. Turn the heat up in the house to get some classic nude (but tasteful) baby shots.
44
5) Play Dress Up. Find a wonderful knit cap, a giant headband/bow, tutu, baby costume or a onesie with your favorite team logo. 6) Be Patient. You can count on your photo shoot being interrupted by crankiness, dirty diapers and hunger. Plan on trying to get shots on several different days. 7) Take LOTS of Photos. The great thing about
digital cameras is that you can delete the ones you don’t want. 8) Print Them! Don’t forget to print your photos. Take your best shots to a local photo printer to get the best quality. 9) Go Pro! If you can afford it, schedule a photo shoot with a professional photographer. A professional portrait of your baby will be a keepsake you treasure. t

Be prepared for baby! Safe Kids Fayette County reminds you to: 1. Buy a crib that meets all Juvenile Product Manufacturer Association (JPMA) safety standards. This is one of the only places you will leave your baby unsupervised, so make sure it’s a safe place!
Free programs to get families reading: • Mom and Me Book Club (parents and kids read the same book and discuss) • Paws to Read (reading practice w/therapy dogs) • Special programs throughout the year for all ages - check out our online calendar!
2. Buy a new car seat and learn how to install it properly. Car seats should be installed at least one month before the baby’s due date so baby’s first ride is a safe one! For more information, contact: SAFE KIDS Coordinator Kentucky Children’s Hospital 800 Rose Street Lexington KY 40536

Body Back
our baby is now 6 weeks old and you feel like it may be time to retire those maternity jeans you’ve been wearing. But after toting around a growing baby for nine months, your body just isn’t ready for your pre-pregnancy jeans. Now, if you are Heidi Klum or Angelina Jolie, you just hire a personal trainer to get your body back into red-carpet shape while your team of professional nannies cares for your children. Back here in the real world, moms have to find a way to carve out a little exercise time from their already busy schedule. One option many new moms are embracing is exercising with baby on board, getting fit while pushing baby in the stroller. In fact, stroller fitness classes and clubs are springing up everywhere sporting names like Stroller Strides and SuperMommies. But you don’t have to sign up for a class to get fit with your stroller. Simply pop your tot into your stroller and head out. Here are some tips to make your stroller fitness routine a success. u Buy a walking/jogging stroller. The larger rubber wheels will make it easier to handle uneven surfaces, and they are often lighter and more maneuverable than traditional strollers. u Use correct posture. Keep your shoulders down and elbows close to your body. Be careful not to hunch over the stroller. u Bring snacks and toys. Make sure you have plenty to keep baby entertained so you can finish your workout. Attach small toys to the stroller with plastic links. u Scout locations. Lexington has walking trails in many local parks including Jacobson, Shillito, the Arboretum and the new 46
Legacy Trail downtown to Kentucky Horse Park. In cold and rainy weather, hit Fayette Mall just as it opens (except around Christmas) and you’ll have room to walk plus a play place for Baby. u Invest in a pedometer. Many new pedometers will allow you to track your walking on your computer. Keeping up with how much you walk can be a good motivator. t baby bump 2011
