Belly Laughs

Best Baby Books By Kellie Doligale

P

Preparing for a new child is a time of adjustment, anticipation and heavy reading. Books like “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” have become household names. But what happens when the baby arrives and you find yourself realizing that no amount of literature will make parenting easy? If you catch yourself with a quiet moment, I suggest delving into a book that sympathizes with the challenges of raising a baby.

“Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay” Post-delivery, this book is a revelation. Stephanie Wilder-Taylor openly declares the notions mothers think about but don’t say. She understands the panicked calls to the pediatrician, the dullness of providing entertainment for an infant, and the pressure to lose baby weight even though the last place you want to be without your baby is the gym. Wilder-Taylor also provides a handful of hilarious lists for a quick read between loads of laundry. Chapters like “New-Mom Pick “Ketchup is a Vegetable: Up Lines” will have you in stitches (and not the kind And Other Lies used to seal up the post-partum earthquake in your lady Moms Tell parts).

“Dirt Is Good for You: True Stories of Surviving Parenthood” A compilation of essays by the editors of Babble.com, “Dirt” is the perfect book to read when you’re starting to question whether you’re a good parent. This empathetic anthology spans the entire spectrum of parenting approaches and assures the reader that each experience is unique. The essays have titles such as “Nude Awakening: Am I Scarring My Kids by Walking Around Naked?” and “Let Them Eat Nuggets: My Kids Are Picky Eaters, and I’m Okay with That.” 10

Themselves”

Almost every page of this motherhood memoir will have you laughing out loud and nodding in agreement. Robin O’Bryant’s three cherubic but devious daughters have provided her hours of entertaining material to share with fellow moms. She shares memories of her toddler climbing in bed only to hand over the contents of her diaper like a gift, and breastfeeding a screaming newborn in a moving car while an older child projectile vomits. Her stories contain both exasperation and nostalgia, reaching the reader on a personal level. baby bump 2013

Belly Laughs

“This Little Piggy Went to the Liquor Store” The ideal read for someone who went from the nightclub to the neighborhood park, AK Turner’s mothering experience is the one to reach for when a good laugh is the best medicine. Dripping with sarcasm, she recounts her transition from scorning the wife and mother image to becoming that which she so openly criticized. Turner is the woman you would want to throw back a cocktail with in the afternoon while you both laugh and cry over the latest adventure in mediocrity. Y

What Mom Should Bring to the Hospital

A

ll you really need when you arrive at the hospital to deliver your baby is your insurance card. However, traveling that light to the hospital wouldn’t be recommended by most. It’s probably a good idea to start packing essentials three to four weeks before your due date so you don’t forget something important. As a mom of three, I have carefully selected the following items that can be helpful while in labor, plus essential items for after having your baby. w Insurance Card: Fill out all paperwork completely (pre-register online if available). You never know how quickly your labor will progress. w Camera & video recorder: Make

sure the batteries are fully charged and you have empty space on your memory card. w Gown: Select your stylish delivery gown in a variety of colors. w Rockabye CD’s: My favorites are Dave Matthews, The Beatles, U2 and Bob Marley. w Journal: Make sure to capture all of those first memories with your new baby. Plus: w Nursing cover-up. w Mother and baby pj set and soft slippers. w Nursing top or dress to wear home from the hospital. w Nursing bras and breast cream. Taking Control Evidence-Based Birth Urges Moms to Educate Themselves by Cristen Pascucci

O

ne in three births in Lexington last year came via surgery – that rate is two times higher than what the World Health Organization considers safe for moms and babies. And a large percentage of these surgeries could have been prevented. It is not by accident that I can say today, “I had a wonderful experience giving birth. I felt completely safe, supported and strong.” Here is what I did to lower my risk as a first-time mom.

First: Preparation

I researched my options for birth and the risks and benefits of various medical procedures that sometimes come into play.

14

Evidencebased care means that your care is based on the most upto-date medical evidence, including information about the risks, benefits and what works best. Rebecca Dekker of Lexington has created a wonderful resource for evidencebased care during childbirth. I encourage all pregnant moms to visit www.evidencebasedbirth.com to learn about what is proven to work best at birth. For you and your partner, Baby Moon in Lexington is also a good resource, offering a selection of childbirth classes and labor workshops. After researching the medical evidence, I carefully created a birth plan that outlined my preferences and was based on the most baby bump 2013

Your Body current research. I discussed it with my care provider and support team ahead of time. I appointed a close family member to make sure it was respected during labor, just in case I wasn’t able to fend for myself.

Second: Get support

After you have researched the medical evidence, talk to your care provider about it. I can’t stress enough how important it is to have a health-care provider who is genuinely and completely supportive of you and your decisions. The best kind of provider is honest and unbiased about explaining the risks, benefits and alternatives of any practice or procedure – and then supports your choices. Remember, these choices are yours to make because your baby’s safety is always more important to you than it is to anyone else. Truly, your provider does work for you. So educate yourself and surround yourself and your baby with a support team that informs and honors your decisions as a mother. In the end, with the right information and the right support, you are the best person to make decisions about your own body and your precious baby. You can do it! Y

A

t one point very late in pregnancy, between 41 and 42 weeks, my care provider and I disagreed on whether or not my labor should be artificially induced. My provider wasn’t sure her schedule would allow her to attend my baby’s birth if labor wasn’t immediately induced with drugs. But I knew that as a first-time mom, being artificially induced doubled my chances of a C-section. I wasn’t willing to take that risk.

“I Changed Doctors When I Was 42 Weeks Pregnant ...” So, at almost 42 weeks pregnant, I made the difficult decision to switch to another provider who offered a lowerrisk alternative to induction, supported my choices unconditionally and was committed to delivering my baby whenever he came. Ultimately, my son’s birth was quick, smooth and unfolded completely on its own. Instead of reluctantly having a procedure I wasn’t sure about, I had a safer, more informed experience with a team I trusted 100%. That team launched me on the road to motherhood feeling strong, confident and in awe of what my body was capable of.

She is on the executive board of the nonprofit Improving Birth, is cofounder of its Lexington chapter at www.facebook.com/ImprovingBirthLexington, and writes regularly at ImprovingBirth.org. Good Night... Sleep Tight by Bud Spoerl

Crib Mattresses: Make the Right Choice

B

etween the hours spent napping and nighttime, the most used item you will purchase for your child is the crib mattress. Your baby will spend approximately 70% of her time on her mattress, and up to half of her time when she becomes a toddler. It’s crucial to buy a high-quality mattress. There are basically three types of mattresses: innerspring, foam and ecofriendly. Which you choose is a matter of personal preference, but always remember, the firmer the mattress, the better. Your baby’s bones are softer and growing faster than at any other time in her life. Most of this growth will take place on her mattress. You want your baby’s backbone to conform to a straight firm mattress,

18

allowing her back to grow straight. And since babies will sleep anywhere, you don’t have to worry about a mattress being too firm. A rule of thumb – if it feels comfortable to you, it’s probably too soft for your baby. • Innerspring mattresses consist of the spring unit, an insulator such as coir fiber, permalator and cushioning layers – the more layers the better. Look for a mattress with the most and thickest coils – it’s generally the thickness of the coils that ensures firmness. Good mattresses always contain a border rod for extra firmness and support, and also extends the life of the mattress. Be sure to have the store show you a cutaway of the mattress so that you’ll be certain of what’s actually inside that baby bump 2013

Safety attractive cover. • Foam mattresses are much lighter than innerspring ones. The heavier the foam mattress, the more likely it consists of the firmest foam available – more foam, less air. Viscoelastic memory foam has grown in popularity, especially when used on only one side of the mattress. This allows you to flip the mattress for your toddler, providing a firm, yet comfortable surface as she continues to grow. And a bio-based Gel memory foam has been introduced recently to provide a cooler sleeping surface. • Eco-friendly mattresses, often some of the firmest, are made with all, or only some, components being natural or organic. These mattresses may offer ecologically friendlier materials such as foam made from renewable plant oils, or natural cotton batting or covers. Most mattresses have a vinyl cover, and those with three or more reinforced layers will be the most durable. At Baby’s Room & Kids Too, we’ve chosen to exclusively offer Colgate brand mattresses. Colgate mattresses are consistently the highest rated and meet all safety standards, including GREENGUARD certification. Serta and Sealy brand crib mattresses, which are only licensed names, are not made by the same companies that make the adult brands. Your best bet is to never buy or use secondhand mattress. And remember, your mattress may be used for more than one child. Buying the highest quality you can afford will assure a favorable return on your investment and peace of mind as your child grows. Register Baby Products With the Manufacturer Now that your baby is home, safety will become one of your primary concerns. One of the easiest ways to protect your child from dangerous or defective products is to make sure that you register all your purchases with the manufacturer. By registering your product, the manufacturer is able to alert you immediately if the product has a safety alert or recall. With each product sold, all manufacturers of children’s durable products are required by federal law to provide a postage-paid product registration card and a means to register the product online. Manufacturers are forbidden from using this registration information for any purpose other than a safety alert. The manufacturer must also place on each product their name, product model number/name, date of manufacture and contact information. Always remember that juvenile products are not a substitute for parental supervision – never leave your baby unattended. Additional safety info may be obtained at www.cpsc.gov or www.jpma. org. -- by Bud Spoerl, owner of Baby’s Room & Kids Too at 2520 Nicholasville Road. Info: www.babysroomky.com or 2764955. Y 19

DIY — Car Seat Check Hone Your Car Seat Safety Skills

by Safe Kids Fayette County

Take 15 minutes to conduct an at-home checkup using the following Safe Kids checklist. Right seat: Check the label on your new car seat to make sure it’s appropriate for your child’s age, weight and height.

Inch test: Once your car seat is installed, give it a good shake at the base. Can you move it more than an inch side to side or front to back? A properly installed seat will not move more than an inch.

Right place: Kids are VIPs. We know all VIPs ride in the back seat, so keep all children in the back seat until they are 13. Doing this, along with correctly using the appropriate child restraints, greatly reduces the risk of injury.

Pinch test: Make sure the harness is tightly buckled and coming from the correct slots (check your car seat owner’s manual). Now, with the chest clip placed at armpit level, pinch the strap at your child’s shoulder. If you are unable to pinch any excess webbing, you’re good to go.

Right direction: Keep your child in a rear-facing car seat for as long as possible. When he or she outgrows the seat, move your child to a forward-facing car seat. Make sure to attach the top tether after you tighten and lock the seat belt or lower anchors.

Parents are encouraged to read the vehicle and car seat instruction manuals in addition to following this checklist. To get detailed explanations of each point on this checklist, visit www.safekids.org. Car Seat Check Up Clinics are held the second Wednesday of every month at Auto Tech, 780 Winchester Road, from 2-4 p.m. by appointment. Info: 323-1153. Y

Home Sweet Home Newborns Spend 70% of Their Time in Cribs

A

by Bud Spoerl, Owner of Baby’s Room & Kids Too

fter having been provided a home for nine months, your baby is now ready for sleeping quarters that aren’t so confining. Your choice of a crib will serve as more than just a place for baby to spend the night – it will become her source of comfort and security. • Be aware of crib recalls and buy from a store where you feel confident in the quality and reputation. For information on crib recalls visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission at www.cpsc.org. • Avoid buying a crib at a garage sale or using a hand-me-down. These cribs may have missing or damaged hardware or parts. 22

• New federal crib safety standards went into effect in June 2011, so be sure your crib was manufactured after that date. • Never use a crib with a drop side. At Baby’s Room & Kids Too we have several exclusive styles of cribs with a “safety gate,” which allows easier access to your baby and are perfectly safe to use. • A high-quality firm crib mattress will be your most important crib-related purchase.

Safe Sleep for Babies • Always place your baby on her back to sleep. Once she is able to roll over, it’s safe to leave her in that position. baby bump 2013

Safety • For the first six months, your baby’s crib should be placed in your room close to you. It’s perfectly acceptable to bring her into your bed to nurse or bond, but when it’s time to sleep, always put her on a separate sleeping surface. • Never put your baby to sleep on a soft surface. Adult beds, sofas, cushions, beanbags, sheepskins and comforters are not safe sleeping surfaces and can greatly increase the risk of SIDS or suffocation. • Always use a firm mattress that is covered with a tight fitting sheet, and make sure the mattress fits snuggly in the crib. • Anything loose, soft or fluffy in the crib can be dangerous. Remove all comforters, blankets, stuffed animals or other pillow-like objects when putting your baby down to sleep.

• Use a wearable blanket or other type of sleeper to keep your baby warm. Avoid overbundling. If a lightweight blanket is necessary, place baby near the end of the crib and tuck the blanket in the end and sides of the crib to keep it snuggly in place. • Do not allow cords or lowhanging mobiles in the crib, especially as your baby gets older and starts grabbing for everything. For this reason, cribs should not be placed near draperies, blinds or other wall-mounted decorations that could be within reach. • Be sure that any person providing care for your baby, including relatives and baby sitters, is also fully aware of these safe sleep guidelines. Celebrate

A Less Baby Shower By Katie Saltz

Planning the Party • Decide who will host the party. Traditionally, a female non-relative hosts. If you have multiple co-hosts, make sure each person has responsibilities suited to their ability. • Send the invitations at least 3-4 weeks before the party. Include directions, RSVP number and registry info. • If children are invited, remember to child-proof the location and include some fun activities. • Ask someone to record the gifts as mom opens them, and have guests address envelopes to themselves for thank you notes. • Have help for Mom to get the presents home.

Making Your Registry

Sticking to a Budget • Bake your own cake or cupcakes to save money. • Consider a pot-luck where each guest can bring a dish. Then you only have to worry about drinks and tableware. • Save money on a photographer by designating one friend to be your shutterbug. Remember to charge your camera. • Churches, community parks or apartment buildings often have recreation spaces they rent out for lower cost than a hotel or country club. Make sure there is adequate parking, seating and extra room to set up food and gifts. • Consider a “diaper raffle” instead of other games. In order to get a raffle ticket, guests must bring a package of diapers.

• Mom should register with at least two different stores, including one chain so out-of-town guests can buy off the registry. • Stick to the basics with your registry: safety gear, feeding products, sheets, diapers, bath items, etc. Plenty of people will buy clothes and toys without seeing them on the registry. • Take the number of guests at your shower and register for twice as many items. This gives your guests a choice. • Divide your registry into thirds by price. Make sure at least one-third of the items are lower-priced, and no more than one-third are very expensive. • Throw the shower about 2-3 months before your due date. This gives you time to return or exchange items before the baby comes. www.BabyBumpLexington.com

eturning to work and continuing to breastfeed can be challenging. However, working mothers who breastfeed have some new protections and services available to help them get started with breastfeeding and successfully continue after returning to work.

Laws & Lactation Support

The Affordable Care Act requires employers who provide paid breaks to their hourly employees “reasonable break time” for expressing breastmilk. Employers are also required to provide a space for pumping that is not a bathroom. Read more at the Department of Labor’s Nursing Mothers webpage, www.dol.gov/whd/nursingmothers.

Paying for Skilled Breastfeeding Help

Often new moms are afraid to ask for help or are reluctant to pay for consultation. Through the ACA, many health insurance plans now provide coverage for visits with an International Board 42

Certified Lactation Consultant. Insurance plans may also pay some or all of the costs for an electric breast pump. The IRS considers many breastfeeding supplies “eligible medical expenses.” You could pay for the services through a “pre-tax” account such as a Health Savings Account or a Flexible Spending Account, and the services might count toward a deductible.

Maternity Leave

Take as long of a maternity leave as you can afford and that your employer will allow. This not only gives you time to heal after childbirth, it also provides time for you and your baby to become skilled with breastfeeding. Your body can establish a reliable supply of breastmilk, and you have time to practice pumping and to stockpile milk in your freezer. baby bump 2013

Your Rights

Pumping or Breastfeeding at Work

Before and during maternity leave, talk with your employer about your need to express milk during your workshift. Let your manager know that breastfed babies are healthier, which means fewer absences to take care of a sick baby. Get support from your co-workers, because they may have to cover for you while you’re pumping (but they’d really have to cover if you were out all day!)

Places to Pump

Every worksite is different but many have a small break room or manager’s office that an employee could use. Look for a place, other than a bathroom, shielded from view and free from intrusion. If the only workable room has a surveillance camera, ask if you can cover the camera to insure privacy. Be patient

www.BabyBumpLexington.com

and creative to find a workable solution.

Reasonable Time

Give yourself 10-15 minutes of pumping per session. Then, add on time to get to your pumping site, set up, and clean and pack up your pump and breastmilk. You may need to work out a schedule to make up for the unpaid time you take. The Department of Labor assumes that a break means you are relieved of duties. If you’re working while pumping, that does NOT count as break time.

Eco-Friendly

Your Baby Items Y our trash can fills up quickly when you have a baby in the house. Even if you are formula feeding or using disposable diapers, you can still be a little eco-conscious by upcycling certain items instead of tossing them in the garbage.

Formula Tins Take the empty tins, wash them out, and cover the outside with colorful contact paper or duct tape. It makes great storage for smaller items or as a container for homemade baby wipes. (You can find the recipe for the wipes at babybumplexington.com!)

Cribs By taking the front side off an old crib you can create a craft desk for kids, or you can use the slats as a homemade clothes drying rack. Visit our Pinterest board for clever ways to reuse your crib, Pinterest.com/BabyBumpLex.

Diaper Boxes Cut off the top flaps and glue fabric over the sides. The jumbo-sized boxes make great toy bins or as storage for outgrown baby clothes.

Baby Food Jars Rinse these out and reuse as often as you can! These make great places to store paper clips in the office, nails and screws in Dad’s workshop, or Q-tips and cotton balls in the bathroom.

Parenting Support

Local Parenting Group Extends Open Invitation By Laura Clark

A

ttachment Parenting of Greater Lexington is a support group for parents with children of all ages that provides practical information and research on all aspects of parenting. The ongoing goal of the group is to listen to our children and follow our hearts to strengthen the dynamic parentchild bond. Julia Allen, Jennifer Haydon and I founded the local chapter of Attachment Parenting International after questions arose during La Leche League meetings. How do we co-sleep safely? How do I discipline my child without spanking or alienation? We often felt lonely in the choices we made. Mostly, we were just uncomfortable with what status quo parenting presented us. After learning about API, we saw the need for a support group to serve the Lexington area. We discovered there was a name for the parenting philosophy of trusting our babies and our instincts. A wealth of scientific research backs our gentle choices. Sociological studies show that children punished with

46

spanking are more violent than their non-spanked peers. Neurological studies show that a child’s brain develops self-soothing capacities over the first few years, and these capacities rely on sensitive parents and caregivers. API has eight principles: Prepare for pregnancy, birth and parenting. Feed with love and respect. Respond with sensitivity. Use nurturing touch. Ensure safe sleep, physically and emotionally. Provide consistent loving care. Practice positive discipline. Strive for balance in personal and family life. Each meeting we explore a principle in depth, sharing information, ideas and our own experiences. Meetings are open to children, and we encourage fathers to join us and share their perspectives. Attachment Parenting is not a set of strict rules or a prescription for the perfect child. The group is a safe space to share daily triumphs and failures. Laura Clark is the mother of a 2-year-old son and due with her second child. She is a birth and postpartum doula and childbirth educator. Y baby bump 2013
