Building Your Village Support Nets Weaved From Many Threads
By Katie Saltz
M
otherhood can be one of the most gratifying experiences in the world. It can also be the one of the most isolating. I remember feeling overwhelmed as a first-time mom. None of my friends were moms. I didn’t belong to any clubs. I didn’t know where to turn to start building relationships with other women. Fast forward six years, and I feel more supported than ever. Because I built my village. That phrase is as old as the hills: “It takes a village to raise a child.” The village is necessary for a mother’s well being as much as it is for the child’s. Pregnancy is stressful. Parenting is stressful. No one can empathize like another parent. You may be dealing with a common woe and just need someone to lend an ear. Or you may have a unique problem that could benefit from a mom who has already walked that mile. Partners, extended family, church groups, real-life friends or Facebook friends can all help fill up your village. It doesn’t matter where you pull from, as long as you strengthen that safety net for when you need help. And trust me – all parents need help. We hope you will use this magazine to identify your needs, explore your options and find support. Discover a class, a meeting or a support group to help you on your parenting journey in our resource guide in the back of this issue. No one is meant to go into parenthood alone. Let us help you build your village. Y

Mother & Baby Benefit From Skin-to-Skin By Katie Saltz Contact
Myth:
Only premature babies need Kangaroo Care.
Myth:
Only mothers need to practice Kangaroo Care with a new baby.
Myth:
Skin-to-skin care is done simply for the baby’s sake.
Myth:
A few minutes of skin-to-skin at a time is enough to reap the benefits. 8

Myth:
Kangaroo Care isn’t possible for moms having C-Sections.
Truth:
In cases of emergency C-Sections, this may be true. But talk to your doctor about your desire for skin-to-skin after a C-Section and put a plan in place. Many factors come into play such as the type of anesthesia you have and the number of available nurses in the operating room, but it’s not impossible to have Kangaroo Care after a C-Section. Check out www.evidencebasedbirth.com for research and advocacy materials on skin-to-skin care after C-Sections. Y

For First-Time Moms:
“Lots of people will give you advice on how to raise your baby. But ultimately you are their mom. You know your child best – better than any family member, doctor, teacher, whoever. It’s okay to look for others for help and advice, and it’s okay to say thank you and to never use it!” – Tiffany Jones
For Moms of Three or More:
For SecondTime Moms: “Really try to enjoy your one-on-one time with the oldest before baby comes, and be prepared that the first time you have to put the baby’s needs ahead of your first child’s you will feel like your heart is being ripped from your chest (and I cried like a baby). It gets easier after some time though and once you see them play together it will fill you with joy.” – Laura Endicott
“As a mama to 7, I truly wish I could have a talk with pre-mom me. I would tell myself to never judge – ever! Even today, just don’t. You just don’t know what a mama may be facing or dealing with. It provides state-of-the-art care for healthy new families and for moms and babies experiencing complications. The hospital features private labor and delivery and postpartum rooms, a 32-crib nursery, and a 16-bay, Level III neonatal intensive care unit. “Our hospital is decorated using warm, muted colors and is designed with comfort in mind,” said Denise Hundley, administrator of the women’s service line at Women’s Hospital Saint Joseph East. “Each room features large windows 14

An anesthesiologist, OB/GYN and neonatologist are on-site 24/7 to assess and monitor laboring and expectant moms and provide emergency care, if necessary. “From the time women walk in our doors until the time of discharge, we provide individualized, personal care,” Hundley said. “Our staff goes out of their way to make sure every parent feels like a priority. Plan Ahead: 529 College Savings Plans What Is It?
How to Get Started
A college savings plan is a qualified tuition program that lets you save money for a child’s college education in an individual investment account. The details of college savings plans vary, but the basics are the same.
Research the plan with the best money manager, investment options, flexibility, historical performance, customer service and fees.
Why a 529 Plan? Contributions grow tax deferred. Income taxes on money the account earns are deferred until the time you make a withdrawal. Withdrawals used for the beneficiary’s education expenses are federal income tax free. Qualified education expenses include unreimbursed college and graduate school expenses for tuition, fees, books, supplies, required equipment, computers, software and Internet access while the beneficiary is in college. Room-and-board expenses are also qualified if the beneficiary attends school at least half-time. Funds can be used at virtually any college. The money in your plan can be used for any college that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. This includes undergraduate colleges, graduate and professional schools, two-year colleges, technical & trade schools, and foreign colleges. Select a plan
Complete an application and designate a beneficiary The beneficiary is the person who will receive the plan proceeds. You can generally name anyone as the beneficiary – your child, your grandchild, niece, nephew, or other relative or friend. Some plans even allow you to name yourself. Choose an investment portfolio Most college savings plans offer several investment portfolio options. Other plans will pick one for you. Choose a fund based on your beneficiary’s age, your risk tolerance, and your overall financial plan. Keep in mind that all investing involves risk, and there can be no assurance that any investment strategy will be successful. Make a cash contribution to open the account After your account is open, you can make additional contributions as often as you wish. Each plan limits an account’s total value. Some plans may require a minimum amount per contribution or restrict the total contributions allowed in one year.

CAR SEAT
Checklist
By Kaitlyn Silvestri Ellis
Is the baby wearing light clothing? Remember-no snow suits or jackets! (A warm blanket can be placed over the baby once she has been buckled in properly on cold days). Are the shoulder straps at or below the baby’s shoulder level? If not, can the harness be lowered?
Take this checklist to the hospital to remember what to do and what to look for when strapping your newborn in her car seat. Is the carrying handle in the correct position for the moving vehicle? (Check your manual to see where this is for your individual car seat). Is the base installed at the correct angle for a newborn? Is the base installed so there is less than one inch of movement at the seat belt or lower LATCH anchor pathway?
Is there any slack in the straps around the baby’s thighs? (Pull up at the shoulder level to get slack out of the thigh area). Is the harness snug around the baby? The straps should be “unpinchable” between your fingertips Is the chest clip even with the baby’s armpits?
Felix, son of Rob and Katie Mitchell of Lexington, is ready to ride safely.
Remember, DO NOT add anything to the car seat that didn’t come with it, including strap covers and extra seat cushions. (They haven’t been crash tested with your seat). When placing the seat into the base did you hear it click into place? 22
Have you double-checked your installation with a certified CPST? The American Academy of Pediatrics and the NHTSA both recommend keeping your children rear facing for a minimum of two years but ideally until they have outgrown their convertible car seat. Y
