By Katie Saltz

his is my fourth year as editor of Baby Bump Lexington. Each year I reach out to the community and ask for story ideas about pregnancy, maternity care and new babies. The results are never boring. Last year we saw Kentucky’s first 24/7 doula service open in our city and a rally where women demanded better childbirth options. This year I discovered that chiropractic care for pregnant women and infants is a growing field, and that many more bizarre baby names hit the books. We’re featuring more than just a list of food you should eat while pregnant – we’re giving you step-by-step recipes of easy, delicious meals. Instead of just telling you to check your car seat manual, we’ve got an expert explaining the safety – strap by strap. Every year I worry I might end up with the same old stories – but that’s not the case with Lexington. It continues to give birth (excuse the pun) to innovative and useful services for pregnant moms. And Baby Bump Lexington is here to share that with you. Y

Health

Safe Medicine Use During Pregnancy By Kellie Doligale

Every pregnancy requires a serious conversation with a licensed health-care provider about safe medications. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nine out of 10 women take medication during pregnancy, and 5.4 million pregnancies a year are exposed to medications. Always speak to your doctor about medications or supplements, but some common ailments are treatable with over-the-counter medicines known to be safe for a growing baby. l Headache: Take acetaminophen (Tylenol.) At the recommended doses, acetaminophen has not shown to harm fetal development. Like anything else, it should be taken at the lowest dose and for the shortest time possible. Acetaminophen is often an ingredient in combination medicines, such as those for cold symptoms, so pay attention to the total dose taken. l Nausea: Try nonmedication remedies first. Foods containing Vitamin B6 such as bananas, nuts and potatoes can 8

ease symptoms of morning sickness. Try eating or even smelling ginger root. Peppermints can also soothe a tossing tummy. Eat small but frequent meals. l Heartburn: Take a chewable antacid made from calcium carbonate, like Tums. Take an antacid with as little liquid as possible, even just to wash it down. Liquid triggers your body to produce its natural digestive juices, including the acid you’re trying to reduce. Avoid antacids containing aspirin, aluminum (which can cause constipation) or baking soda, which leads to water retention on your already swollen body. baby bump 2015

l Constipation: Increase fluid and fiber intake first. Discuss an additional fiber supplement with your doctor if you believe it is necessary. Though some laxatives like Milk of Magnesia are safe during pregnancy, they should not be a first resort. l Insomnia: Alter your bedtime routine. Establish a calming routine at night. Drinking herbal tea can help soothe your body and mind before resting. If the sleepless nights continue, ask

Resources:

your doctor if it’s safe to take an antihistamine like Benadryl to help you doze off when needed. l Cold and Cough: Acetaminophen and most saline nasal sprays are safe. Some cough medicines and decongestants are safe for short-term use. You may consider discussing these things early in your pregnancy as a “just in case,” and your doctor can give you a list of safe remedies. Chewing peppermints or eating spicy food can help clear clogged sinuses. Y

Fitness

Getting in Shape

With Fit4Mom, Women Socialize While Working Out

M

oms begin to worry about losing the baby weight even before baby arrives. In Lexington, the Fit4Mom program not only helps moms get back into shape but also works out their social skills. Lindsay Gilvin first discovered Fit4Mom, the country’s largest fitness program for moms that offers pre- and post-natal fitness classes, when she was living in North Carolina in 2011. She was a stay-at-home mom with her daughter but realized she missed the social interaction and overall activity of working full-time. When she found the Fit4Mom program called Stroller Strides, she couldn’t imagine getting a better workout in this group than she could on her own. She was wrong. “I found exactly what I was looking for and so much more,” she said. “I was able to get back into shape with my baby, set a good example and allow her to grow up understanding that physical activity is a priority.” When Lindsay moved to Lexington in 2012, she found no program quite 12

By Katie Saltz

like the Stroller Strides class. So in April of 2014, she became a franchise owner and began Fit4Mom Lexington. Classes are taught by Lindsay, who is a mother of two and holds a Health Fitness and Preventative Rehabilitation degree, a master’s in Kinesiology and Health Promotion, and is a Certified Group Fitness instructor. Mary McCarty, a mother of one who is a Certified Group Fitness Instructor, teaches the Stroller Strides class. Stroller Strides is open to moms from the prenatal stage to those with stroller-age kids. Classes are offered in the mornings, evenings and on weekends. Moms can try a week of classes for free, and unlimited class passes are available for $55 per month. In addition to Stroller Strides, moms can also become a part of “Our Village.” baby bump 2015

Our Village hosts free weekly playgroups, monthly Moms’ Night Out, free Family Day workouts, and charitable events and service activities. “Instructors weave songs and activities into the routine designed to entertain and engage baby, while moms are led through a series of strength training and cardiovascular exercises.,” Lindsay said. “We conclude the class with core work and stretching.” Venessa Parker began Stroller Strides in May of 2014. She had little family or friends with children in Lexington, so she sought out an activity she could do with her then six-month-old son. “I really needed a support group of women and I found that with Stroller Strides,” Venessa said. “Everyone is so welcoming.”

The combination of physical motivation and emotional support is what makes Stroller Strides so special, she said. “The best part is that I made a bunch of new friends who are also moms and going through the same things as I am,” Venessa said. Fit4Mom is much more than just a workout, Lindsay said. It’s a chance for women to empathize and support each other when motherhood gets tough. “Let’s face it, being a mom is a huge responsibility and it’s not easy,” she said. “There are a lot of hard times, but being part of a village where you know that you aren’t in it alone is comforting.” Info: www.lexington.fit4mom.com Facebook.com/Fit4Mom.Lexington

The Women’s Hospital at Saint Joseph East

OB Specialists Are on Site 24/7 By Kathie Stamps

E

xpectant parents have a million questions and concerns. What if your doctor gets stuck in traffic and can’t make it to the hospital when you are ready to deliver? Relax. One thing you don’t have to worry about at the Women’s Hospital at Saint Joseph East is whether an obstetrics physician will be there when your baby is ready to enter the world. Saint Joseph East has contracted with Ob Hospitalist Group, Inc., a national physician group specializing in caring for the OB/GYN needs of women. An area OB hospitalist is on premises at Saint Joseph East 24/7 to take care of emergency room consults, patients who don’t have a doctor or those whose private physician isn’t available at the moment. The hospitalists examine maternity patients and evaluate the progress of labor, react to laboratory abnormalities and safely deliver babies. Because they are OB/GYN-board certified physicians, OB hospitalists work with the hospital’s staff to handle any medical emergency that may arise. The word “hospitalist” was coined 14

in 1996 to define a physician who specializes in hospital medicine (as opposed to a particular disease or condition) and typically includes research and teaching in addition to treating patients. The hospitalist program is important for patients, physicians and hospitals. Regular hours, no beepers and no being “on call” all make for a great lifestyle for hospitalists, greatly reducing burnout and physical and mental fatigue, which also benefits patients. For patients, care is always available when you need it. If your private physician is going to be a few minutes late when you’re ready to deliver or needs an extra consult, hospitalists are on site all day and all night at Saint Joseph East. Day by Day Calendar: First Week of Breastfeeding

Nutrition

Although every family is different, this calendar gives basic By Doraine Bailey information about the early days of being a mom. It doesn’t cover everything, but it can give you ideas and help you know when things are okay. Most of these ideas are for healthy babies and mothers. If you or your baby stayed in the hospital more than three days, or your baby is very small or early, then you might need extra help from your doctors.

DAY 1

n At birth, hold your baby “skin-to-skin.” n Breastfeed within one hour of birth if possible. n Feed at least every 2-3 hours, 10-30 minutes per breast. n Baby may take a few minutes to latch on to the breast in the first few days. Baby

will get faster with practice.

DAY 2

n Baby may feed a lot overnight. n Limit visitors so you can rest. n Breastfeed baby often. n You may feel cramps in your stomach when you nurse. This is normal and will go away after

a few days. n Your baby’s stomach can hold about a teaspoon of milk at a time.

DAY 3

n Your breasts will start to feel fuller as your milk changes and increases. n Finish the first breast first – you should see the baby gulping and feel your breast

get softer. n It is normal for your nipples to feel tender. Use nipple cream after feedings. If they are very sore or damaged, call for help!

DAY 4

n Baby has about 4 wet and 4 soiled diapers by day four. n It is usually okay to take some pain relievers for discomfort after delivery. Ask your doctors

for more information. n Keep feeding often to help your body learn how much milk to make. n Some babies nurse on only one side at a time. Start on the other side at the next feeding.

DAY 5

n Your baby’s stomach can now hold about 1 ounce at a time. n Have family and friends help out so you can care for baby and rest. n If your baby is fussy after eating, this may be because she is overly full not

because she is hungry. n Having baby sleep in the same room with you in the early weeks means you can respond to baby quickly.

DAY 6

n Feeling blue is normal. Get help in caring for your baby and yourself. Babies are overwhelming. n Try nursing baby while lying down if you feel tired. n If you have questions, ask for help from someone who knows about breastfeeding. n Keep baby interested in breastfeeding – don’t use a bottle. n Be patient with yourself and your baby.

DAY 7

n Baby may start a growth spurt about now and needs to nurse more often. n Nursing or expressing breastmilk before you go to bed and when you get up in

the morning can keep your breasts more comfortable. n Feeding can take up all your time. Let helpers do other things for you and baby.

Safety

Car Seat Safety

By Kaitlyn Silvestri Ellis, CPST

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car crashes are the No. 1 cause of preventable death in the U. S. Properly-used car seats help. But did you know that 3 out of 4 car seats are used incorrectly?

Follow these tips for a safe ride. 1) Check your manual to see what position the carry handle should be in when car is in motion, and to see how much space should be between the car seat and the seat in front of it. 2) Only use products that come with the car seat. Comfort cushions and strap covers have not been crash tested with the seat and use voids the warranty. The baby’s head should be more than one inch away from the top of the shell. 3) Rear-facing children should have the harness at or BELOW the shoulder level. Forward facing children should have the harness at or ABOVE the shoulder level. 4) Make sure straps are not twisted, that the chest clip is at armpit level, and that the straps are snug enough that any slack cannot be pinched at the shoulder level. 5) Check the manual to make sure buckle is through the correct slot for the size of your baby. 6) Seat should not move more than 1 inch at the belt pathway. Check your manual for LATCH or seat belt instructions to install base. 7) Base should be at correct angle according to the level. 26

Other Safety Tips: Infant carrier seats should only be used in the car. Placing them on top of a grocery cart can damage the seat’s base attachments and can be a fall hazard. Wear your baby instead! Allowing the baby to sleep in the seat outside of the car is very dangerous because the seat is not at the correct angle, which can block the baby’s airway. Make sure to have a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician help you with your installation. CPSTs are specially trained to help you find the best way to fit your seat in your car and to teach you how to adjust it for your child. Visit babybumplexington.com for tips on when to switch to a forwardfacing seat, booster seat, and how to know if your child is ready to ride without a car seat. baby bump 2015
