Who’s the Boss?

By Katie Saltz

C

onfidence is something we all need to be happy and successful in life, and it is most definitely needed during pregnancy. I’m not talking about body-confidence (although stretch marks and swollen feet take their toll on body image during pregnancy.) I mean the confidence to take the reins of your prenatal health and wellness, and of your childbirth experience. The choices you will have to make during pregnancy are endless. “Should I eat this lunch meat without heating it?” “Do I want an epidural?” “Where do I go for breastfeeding support?” You will be inundated with people telling you their opinions, and much of it will be conflicting information. You might start second-guessing yourself and the plan you’ve made for you and your baby. Educating yourself so you can make informed choices is the first step. The next step is vocalizing your decisions. Knowing what you want and communicating that will make your pregnancy experience smoother. When we lack confidence, we often find Katie Saltz is the editor of Baby Bump and mother to CeCe, 8, Ezra, 3, and Gwen, 1. Katie writes a monthly column for Lexington Family Magazine about being a mother.

ourselves at the mercy of someone who has it. This maternity guide is your starting point for that self-education. Plan for a successful start to breastfeeding with tips from an expert on Page 10. Use the Sample Birth Plan on Page 12 to get an idea of all your options for labor and delivery. Read a Q & A with a newborn photographer on Page 14. The resource guide in the back of this magazine is a wealth of information for finding a pediatrician, a postpartum counselor, breastfeeding support and much more. Shoring up your confidence in pregnancy will get you started off right in your parenting journey. There will be plenty of times you will waver and question your judgment as a parent. But knowing how to make an informed decision goes a long way in building that confidence. Good luck to you, reader, on your journey into motherhood. You’ve got this. Y

10 TIPS For a Successful Start to

Breastfeeding By Alyson Layne-Davidson, MS, RD, LD, CLS

abies and breastfeeding—they go together like peanut butter and jelly. But, many new parents don’t know where to start. Use these 10 helpful tips to get your breastfeeding journey off to a good start.

1 2 3

Find your support person. This can be baby’s father, a friend or a

4 5

Keep your baby in your room. Watch for “cuddle cues,” like baby

10

close family member. Share your breastfeeding plan and goals with this support person. They will be your cheerleader and your champion when baby is born.

Attend a breastfeeding class. It’s easier to learn about breastfeeding before baby is born. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Take your support person with you so they can learn too.

Hold your baby skin-to-skin. Let your doctor or midwife know that you want to do skin-to-skin right after baby is born. Baby will find the breast and latch on all on her own. Don’t worry if she takes breaks – sometimes it can take up to 90 minutes for that first feed to happen. Your support person can let family and friends know that this is a special time just for you and baby. sucking his hand or smacking his lips and opening his mouth. These cues may be your baby telling you he’s hungry, or that he wants to be held and cuddled. Unwrap your baby and put him on your chest, skin-to-skin with baby’s tummy touching you.

Lay back and relax. Hold baby skin-to-skin as often as you want – especially when baby is showing “cuddle cues.” Recline your bed slightly and be amazed as baby starts looking for your breast to latch on and eat.

Avoid baby bottles and pacifiers. Unless it’s needed for a medical reason, it’s best to say “no” to baby bottles and pacifiers those first few weeks of baby’s life. Baby is still learning how to breastfeed and she needs to practice.

Count the poops. Many parents worry how they’ll know their breastfed baby is getting enough to eat. One easy way is to count baby’s poops. Poops will change from dark-colored to yellow by Day 5, and baby should have at least three poops per day by Day 4. If baby doesn’t seem to be having as many poops as expected, let your doctor, nurse or breastfeeding specialist know.

Ask for help. Breastfeeding may be natural, but it also takes practice. If you experience painful nipples or any other discomfort, speak with a breastfeeding specialist.

Breastfeed, breastfeed, breastfeed. Most newborns will eat frequently, about 8-12 times in 24 hours. The more baby eats, the more milk you will make.

Rock on, mama! Above all, remember that you are doing great work. Breastfeeding keeps you and baby healthy and is a wonderful way for moms and babies to bond.

Sample Birth Plan

riting a birth plan is a helpful way for you to consider all the options available to you during childbirth. Below is a sample of some things to include on a birth plan to make sure your care team knows your wishes:

General Info • Your Name • Care Provider’s Name • Birth Partner’s Name

During Labor • Who do you want with you as you labor through contractions? • Do you want any pain medication? • Will you allow internal exams? • Do you wish to be free to move around? • Do you want any labor aids like a birthing ball or stool? • Will you consider induction medication if it’s recommended?

Giving Birth • Who do you want present in the delivery room? • Will you allow an episiotomy if recommended by your doctor? • In case of an emergency, who is allowed to make medical decisions for you and your baby?

After Delivery • Do you want your partner to cut the cord right away or delay cord clamping? • Do you want to practice skin-toskin before the baby is cleaned and weighed? • Do you intend to breastfeed? • Do you want to be present for any medical exams of your baby? • Will you allow visitors at the hospital?

These are just a few things to consider when preparing for your childbirth experience. Ask your care provider about what questions could arise during labor, so you can have answers prepared before you even get to the hospital. Y

MOM to MOM ice v d A “

What is your advice to prepare a child for a new sibling? “Involve them in as much as possible. Diaper changes, bath time, etc. Give them jobs that involve them like handing you diapers or wipes, turning on the swing, or picking out the baby’s clothes (my 5-year-old’s personal favorite!)” – Shelby Ann O’Rourke

What is your best piece of advice for an expectant mom as she goes into labor? “Be adaptable. Listen to the doctor and nurses, but also let them know what feels right.” – Barb Maloney

BabyBumpLexington.com

We asked Real Bluegrass Moms to share their advice for new and veteran moms. Here is what they said . . .

What is your advice for a mom preparing to return to work? “Take the time to care for yourself each day. Even if it’s 5 minutes sitting in the bathroom at work. Being a mother is both physically and emotionally exhausting. Take the time to recognize you’re a superhero each day!

What is your advice for a new mom regarding her postpartum care? “Snuggle that baby and don’t let anyone’s ‘advice’ ruin your joy or make you question your choices.” – Ruth Willoughby

Q&A with a Newborn Photographer

N

ewborn photos are a precious gift for parents after the birth of a child. Christy Potter, a Lexingtonbased accredited professional newborn photographer with APNPI, shared her tips on what parents should know about newborn photography. photo credit Christy Potter Photography Q: How soon should a mom start looking for a newborn photographer? A: “It’s never too early to book a newborn session. Parents should start looking for their photographer once they have reached their second trimester. Most professional newborn photographers book a limited number of sessions per month, due to the time and care that goes into each newborn session.” Q: How soon after birth should the session take place? A: “Newborns are best photographed within the first three weeks of life, generally between 7-21 days. Preemies can typically be done a little later. At this age babies are easily settled, often sleeping and therefore more comfortable during their session.” Q: How do you achieve those intricate poses of newborns? Is it dangerous? A: “Newborn photography is much more than just taking a picture. The photographer should be trained in newborn safety, and have the knowledge of how to safely pose your precious baby. Currently, there are no safety regulations in place for the Newborn Photography industry. Anyone who owns a camera can begin photographing newborns with no training and no knowledge of the unique needs of infants. Responsible newborn photographers receive training in order to safely and artistically pose babies. ” Q: What should parents look for when hiring a newborn photographer? A: “Is the photographer you are considering trained in safely posing your newborn? You will be handing your new baby to this person to handle for 2-4 hours, depending on their session time frame. You need to be certain that they can safely handle your child. When investing in a newborn photographer, you should not only consider what is included with your session, but be more concerned on the experience and training your photographer has.” Q: What is one thing you wish parents knew about newborn photos? A: “They are only a newborn for a couple of weeks. You try to soak it all in, but as a parent I know these moments are fleeting. Soon, these first days will be distant, but cherished memories. I have never had someone say they regret having their newborn photographed, but so many tell me they missed it with their previous child. Unfortunately, we can’t go back in time. Having your baby photographed will preserve these special memories for you.” Y 14

"HEALTHY" DESSERTS

D

essert often tops the list of pregnancy cravings, but your prenatal diet emphasizes protein and fiber over sugar and fat. Choosing healthier options means you can enjoy dessert and feel good about your diet. Here are some options for healthy treats that will still satisfy a sweet tooth.

Are you craving...

popsicles? Make your own fruit pops. Store bought popsicles are loaded with sugar and artificial dyes. Blend your favorite fruit combos with some Greek yogurt, then freeze in ice-pop molds.

cake? Angel food cake is a perfect dessert option when craving cake. It’s light, airy and pairs well with sweet add-ons. Throw some berries and a small dollop of whipped cream on top.

ice cream? Opt for frozen yogurt. The texture is different, but you’re getting the protein and calcium without the fat. You can top it with chocolate sauce, chopped nuts or fruit. 16

baby bump 2019

cookies? Try modifying an oatmeal cookie recipe to include your favorite flavors (chocolate chips, nuts, etc.) The oatmeal adds a fiber boost to the sweetness of the cookie dough.

chocolate? Try chocolate-covered nuts or chocolate-dipped fruit. Dark chocolate has its own health benefits but fillings like peanuts or strawberries are hands down better for you than caramel or nougat. Y
