Self-Education Starts Here Knowledge Is Power in Pregnancy
By Katie Saltz
H
indsight is 20/20, and it’s even keener through the eyes of a parent. I am the mother of three (ages 7, 2, and 8 months), and I can’t count how many things I would change about my parenting, starting with my first pregnancy. At the time, I was unaware of car seat safety standards. I didn’t know what my ideal diet should be. I didn’t even realize what all my options were as far as care providers and a birth plan. The phrase “You don’t know what you don’t know” seems so obvious, but it rings true for parents. You can’t be expected to know what you’ve never learned or experienced. We all start out as “newbies.” That’s why self-education is so important as you prepare for a new baby. Innocent mistakes will be made, but arming yourself with knowledge can help decrease those mistakes and possibly avoid major ones. The Baby Bump is a handbook to help you self-educate. We’ve written about prenatal health, breastfeeding, infant development and fun baby name ideas. The resource guide in the back of the magazine is full of ways you can educate yourself on pregnancy and parenting issues. There you can find adoption agencies, childbirth classes, doulas, care provider information, car seat technicians and much more. You don’t know what you don’t know. But we are here to help you learn a little bit more as you start the parenting journey. We asked Real Bluegrass Moms to share their advice for new and veteran moms. Here is what they said . . .
What is your advice to prepare a child for a new sibling? “Involve them in everything! This way, they don’t feel left out. Talk about how big of a helper they are when they bring a diaper or help feed baby somehow, even if it’s just patting to burp.” – Chelsea Pohl Noble
What is your advice for a mom preparing to return to work? “Allow yourself to enjoy being back at work. Being a parent is a spectacular job, but it’s also messy, exhausting and largely thankless. Try not to feel guilty for being glad to get away and spend time around other adults, doing something you feel confident about.” – Kellie Doligale
What is your best piece of advice for an expectant mom as she goes into labor? “Relax. Remember to breathe and trust your body. It’s good to have a plan in mind and it’s ok to make changes and do what’s best for you during labor.” – Chante Perryman 8
What is your advice for a new mom regarding her postpartum care? “Figure out dinner options for the first few weeks. Whether a Costco run, freezer meals or a meal train that a friend sets up. It will make life so much easier!” – Sarah Jewel Adams

Baby Showers for Dads Baby showers have traditionally been a womenonly event, with co-ed parties becoming more common in modern times. The latest trend is to host a separate baby shower just for dad. Check out these ideas for a “manly” baby shower to give Dad his own special day.
“B” Ball
BBQ and Babies
Gather up your sports fan friends and take the baby shower to the ballpark. Get some tickets to a nearby game and bring sportsthemed gifts for the baby, like a onesie featuring the dad’s favorite team, team logo diapers or a toy ball.
Gather up dad’s favorite meats and have a good old-fashioned cook-out to celebrate his journey into fatherhood. You can also ask guests to bring some “BBQ” supplies for the baby, like bibs, bottles and wipes.
Pampers n’ Poker
Diapers n’ Dudes
If the dad-to-be is a card player, host a poker game where the buyin is diapers. Get a prize for the winner, but at the end of the game dad gets to keep all the diapers. 12
Another way to collect baby basics from your guy friends is to host a party for the dad with a nice beer selection for the night. The cover charge? A box of diapers. Y

Good Start!
By Doraine Bailey, MA, IBCLC, RLC
Use these checklists to help you plan ahead. Use them with your health care providers during your pregnancy, birth and postpartum to stay on track for your breastfeeding goals.

Surround yourself with good-quality information and support. w Attend a breastfeeding class w Connect with other breastfeeding moms through on-line or in-person groups.
In t he Hospital:
These research-based tips can help you and your baby start off well. w Place your baby Skin-to-Skin as soon as possible after birth. w Keep baby in your room with you as much as possible, including overnight. w Breastfeed frequently, aiming for 8-12 times over 24 hours (including at night). w Call on hospital staff, including lactation consultants, to help you. w Avoid bottles and pacifiers because they can interfere with baby learning good breastfeeding skills. w Avoid giving formula or other liquids to baby unless medically necessary, since they can interfere with building a good milk supply. w If your baby can’t breastfeed, begin pumping as soon as possible. w Get info on who can help with breastfeeding questions before you go home. 14

WHY MOMS NEED LIFE INSURANCE
T
by: Jennifer Quillen
oday, women have more financial responsibilities than ever before. How will your loved ones manage financially if you die? Whether you are single, married, employed, or a stay-at-home mom, you probably need life insurance.
Who needs life insurance? Working Women: Increasingly, families depend on the income of two working parents. If you’re a working mother, your income helps cover the cost of living expenses such as food, clothing and utilities, and it provides savings for your children’s college education and your retirement. Life insurance protects your family by providing proceeds that can be used to replace your lost income if you die prematurely.
Single Moms: Whether you’re divorced, widowed or a single mom, you’re most likely primarily responsible for your child’s support. If you die prematurely, life insurance can provide ongoing income to cover child-care costs, medical expenses, debts and future college costs.
Stay-At-Home Moms: Maintaining a household is a full-time job. The cost of the services performed by a stay-at-home mom could be quite significant if someone had to be hired to do them. If you die, your surviving spouse may have to pay for childcare, transportation for your children and housekeeping. Taking over those responsibilities could cause your spouse to shorten work hours, resulting in a reduction in income. Proceeds from your life insurance can help pay for services that keep the household running and allow your spouse to keep working.
Family Caregiver: Many women provide care for both children and elderly family members. Caring for an aging parent can include the costs of adult day care, uninsured medical expenses and extra transportation. Adding these expenses to the costs of maintaining a household, child care and college tuition can be financially overwhelming. These added financial responsibilities often continue after your death. Life insurance provides a source of funds that can be used to help pay for these expenses.
Business Owner: You may be one of the increasing number of women business owners. If you die while owning your business, life insurance can be used to provide cash for company expenses such as payroll or operating costs while your estate is being settled. Also, life insurance can be a useful tool for business owners structuring buy-sell arrangements or providing benefits to key employees.

Seasonal Suggestions Healthy Pregnancy By Kellie Doligale
The pressure is on to maintain a healthy, balanced diet when you’re expecting a baby, but filling your plate with fruits and veggies can be a real challenge. Buying seasonal, however, is a practical way to get the lowest prices and best flavors. When an item is “in season,” it’s at the peak of its growth and harvesting cycle for the year. This typically means it’s a lower price and tastes the best. Listed below are recipe suggestions by time of year, taking full advantage of each season’s bounty.
In season: Lettuce, strawberries, cherries, blueberries, asparagus, sugar snap peas, arugula
Grilled
Chicken Salad with strawberries
Ingredients: Lettuce Grilled Chicken (hot or cold) Cut Strawberries Sliced Almonds Sliced Red onion.
instructions: Clean and separate leaves of your favorite lettuce. Top with grilled chicken (hot or cold), cut strawberries, sliced almonds and sliced red onion. You can also add a small amount of dried cranberries, croutons, chopped bacon or parmesan cheese. Drizzle with balsamic dressing or your preference.
Extra ideas: Top oatmeal with lots of fresh berries and a sprinkle of sugar. Dip sugar snap peas in ranch for an easy snack. In season: Tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, bell peppers, basil, peaches, avocados
PASTA
with grilled summer produce
Ingredients:
Eggplant Zucchini Bell Peppers into bite size Cherry Tomatoes Onion Olive Oil Al-dente Pasta Basil Leaves
instructions: Cut eggplant, zucchini and bell peppers into bite size pieces and place on skewers, along with cherry tomatoes or slices of onion. Brush with olive oil. On a low flame, grill the skewers until soft and browned on the outside. Strip the skewers and toss the grilled tomatoes and veggies with al-dente pasta of your choice, a drizzle of olive oil, fresh chopped basil leaves, and salt and pepper to taste.
Extra ideas: Enjoy avocados in guacamole, smeared on toast or your favorite sandwich Top French toast with sliced peaches 18

Add 3 cups peeled, seeded and cubed butternut squash and ½ cup chicken broth. Cover and simmer until squash is soft, about 20 minutes. Transfer mixture to a blender and puree until smooth. Add ¾ cup apple cider, ¼ cup light sour cream and ½ tsp. salt. Blend until well combined. Place soup in saucepan and heat through. Serve topped with diced red apple and cracked black pepper.
Extra ideas: Snack on apple slices and your favorite nut butter. For an easy lunch option, cook a sweet potato in the microwave. In season: Leafy greens (kale, spinach, collards), Brussels sprouts, broccoli, citrus
Korean beef with rice and greens Ingredients: ¼ cup brown sugar ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce ¼ tsp. ground ginger ¼ tsp. red pepper flakes 2 tsp. sesame oil 1 tbsp. chopped green onion ½ tsp. minced garlic 1 pound lean beef 2-3 large handfuls of spinach or other leafy green White or Brown Rice
instructions: Combine ¼ cup brown sugar, ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce, ¼ tsp. ground ginger, ¼ tsp. red pepper flakes, 2 tsp. sesame oil and 1 tbsp. chopped green onion in a small bowl and set aside. Heat 1 tbsp. cooking oil in a skillet and sauté 1 ½ tsp. minced garlic for 1 minute. Add 1 pound lean beef, breaking it up as it cooks. When beef is fully browned, add the soy sauce mixture and combine with beef until all ingredients are heated through. Add 2-3 large handfuls of spinach or other leafy green to skillet and continue to cook until greens are wilted. Serve beef and greens over white or brown rice.
Extra ideas: Make green smoothies with a handful of kale added to your fruits of choice. Grab mandarins, oranges or grapefruits for a mid-afternoon snack. BabyBumpLexington.com

SAFETY TIPS Remove bulky, puffy coats before buckling up baby in their car seat. Instead put coat on backwards after harnesses are snugly adjusted. Use a sleep sack instead of blankets in a crib. When medicating infants, follow pediatrician’s instructions and use the dosage device that came with the medication. For more information, visit
