Mission of Hope Christmas Crusade UK Retiree Opens Her Heart – And Pocketbook

anet Hyatt pulled into the Lexington Family Magazine parking lot with her car packed full of gifts for the Mission of Hope’s Big Blue Barrel Christmas drive. Hauling all of Hyatt’s donations from the parking lot to the office took multiple trips – she even had to return the next day to finish her giving spree. Hyatt is not from Eastern Kentucky, but Mission of Hope struck her as a way to make a difference. “Several years ago I saw Mission of Hope, and it just – something about it made me want to give,” Hyatt said. “Eastern Kentucky has fallen on hard times, hard times that have gone on maybe forever.” Mission of Hope, a Knoxvillebased Christian charity, serves more than 18,000 students at 28 schools in the poorest Appalachian counties. To meet this demand, MOH sets up Big Blue Barrels around Central

Kentucky from Nov. 18- Dec. 5, where people can drop off new clothing, toys, non-perishable food items and hygiene products. Hyatt’s donations will go to some of those 18,000 students in need, but MOH Executive Director Emmette Thompson said “the time has long since passed where the Big Blue Barrel collections fill all of our needs for children.” To help meet that need, people can also make tax-deductible donations. For Hyatt, she said it feels good to donate. She retired from her IT job at UK in 2003, and then went to work at Macy’s for two years. As a Macy’s employee she purchased toys and clothes in the clearance section with her employee discount for a real bargain, knowing she would donate the things she bought. “I had a lot more stuff than I thought,” she said. “And it feels good. I like that I’m doing something for somebody who needs it.” Though she no longer works at Macy’s, Hyatt will continue to purchase clothes and toys to give away during future

holiday seasons. elebrate the season by reading a holiday book with your kids. Here are three new titles to check out this Christmas season. Lexington Family Magazine will give away these books on Facebook in December.

“Goodnight Manger” by Laura Sassi This sweet rhyming book follows Mary and Joseph trying to get baby Jesus asleep for bed, but it’s hard with angels singing, donkeys braying and three kings knocking. Recommended for ages 4-8. “The Great Spruce” by John Duvall When young Alec’s favorite tree is in danger of being chopped down, he springs into action to save the great spruce. The story is a good lesson in nature conservation, creative thinking and the spirit of Christmas. Recommended for ages 5-8. “The Gingerbread Man Loose at the Zoo” by Laura Murray The Gingerbread Man has some wild adventures among the animals in this book. A trip to the zoo becomes a scavenger hunt where young readers follow along with the clues. This series is a fun twist on a classic children’s rhyme. Recommended for ages 5-8. Y

THE PERFECT GIFT? UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

he holidays are here again! We all learn from a young age to make a list of gifts we want for holidays and birthdays. It is a time-honored ritual that we celebrate together. It’s also fun to make a gift list for the people we love. Your children will tell you that they want blasters, trolls, Hatchimals, drones, clothes, and Snuggles My Dream Puppy. But here’s a thought to consider during this season of giving – children really want something else and not just for the holidays. It is unconditional love. Unconditional love has no bounds and never changes. It sees the value and worthiness of an individual, separate from his or her behavior. If you knew in your heart that no matter what you did, you would be loved beyond measure, what could you accomplish? Unconditional love is the root and foundation from which healthy, resilient, happy humans grow. In the book “Mama, Do You Love Me?” by Barbara Joosse, a young Inuit girl tests the limits of her mother’s love by asking her questions: “What if I turned into a walrus?” “What if I stayed away?” “What if I made you angry or made you cry?” No matter the question, her mother assures her that she will be loved “forever and for always.” That is the message that every child wants to hear. another, “I love you” every day. Parents show their love through caring for children, and encouraging them to care for others. Providing an atmosphere of warmth and support in your home creates a sense of safety, security and love. But sometimes parents get angry. Children don’t do what they are supposed to do. Mistakes are made. In those times, how do children know they are unconditionally loved? One simple tip is this: Try changing one little three-letter word – from “but” to “and.” “I love you and you may not color on the wall.” “I love you and the answer is no.” “I love you and you may not hit.” Why is the word “and” so powerful here? Because it states an unconditional fact. When the word “but” is used, it suggests to a child that there are times when he is NOT loved. There is no greater contributor to a child’s developing sense of self than the knowledge that her parent loves her no matter what. Now, that’s the perfect gift! s a child, my mother read to me every night. Her rule was 20 minutes of reading for every child at bedtime. Even when she traveled out of town, she would leave behind a casette tape of herself reading. We would follow along with the book in our hands. Not surprisingly, reading to my daughter seemed natural – and is beneficial to her. So in honor of my mother, I drafted a few tips for parents who haven’t hopped on board the Reading Train. 1) Read Together Every Day. Every. Single. Day. Bedtime is ideal because you can relax and snuggle up on pillows. If your schedule doesn’t allow that, then read during breakfast. Read immediately after school or daycare.

have the privilege of speaking to high school students to motivate them to take the ACT. I always show them a bar graph contrasting income totals for high school dropouts with those who have earned advanced degrees. I use some props to help them grasp the impact of investing in their education. My family just completed a college visit to Kimberly Hudson the University of Tennessee with my oldest daughter. My husband and I felt like we traveled back in time. We relived many college experiences, saw friends we hadn’t seen in 20 years and showed our girls around a town we love! The weekend was poignant in that my husband and I realized what a huge impact our education made on our adult lives. My husband initially earned an animal science degree but decided early into his career that he wanted to change paths. After returning to college and receiving a Master’s degree in accounting, he pursued a career in that field that he loves and allows him to help people. I earned a Master’s degree in Communication Disorders from UT. Fast forward 25 years and that education has been a gift of huge proportions. My middle daughter has a severe-profound language processing disorder, also known as dyslexia. Because I have the educational and professional training to identify her struggle, I can provide her with the proper tools for success. With my oldest daughter, we are a year behind in our college visits because of injuries she suffered in a car accident. She sustained significant bruising of the brain, and she healed slowly because of a history of previous sports concussions. Again, because I had worked with head injuries and understood how to identify problems, I helped her gain the tools she needed to rehabilitate the cognitive skills she had lost. So this holiday season I am grateful to have the gift of higher education and professional experiences that have allowed me to improve the lives of my very own children. In the same way, I try to understand on a personal level the struggles of all my students, and I’m driven to give all students tools for academic success. According to Dr. Rick Graebe, a behavioral optometrist with Children’s Vision and Learning Center in Versailles, these are not the best toys for your child’s development. “Our visual system is made to operate in a three-dimensional world,” Dr. Graebe said. “Too often kids lock into a shiny, illuminated, two-dimensional screen.” So when you’re out gift shopping this month, think “old school,” Dr. Graebe said. Instead of computer games and touch screen tablets, children need toys that help develop their visual systems. Toys that require children to reach, touch and manipulate will activate the senses of a child. This is crucial as a child learns about
