Letter From Katie

Vol. 21 Issue 12

With 3 Kids, How Can She Sleep at Night? Well, She Can’t

O

ne of the first questions people will ask about your new baby is “how does she sleep?” It’s like parents are in a race to get their child to sleep for eight-hour stretches as soon as possible. If it is a race, I have lost. I haven’t even crossed the finish line. Since 2010 when I was pregnant with the first of my three children, I haven’t slept through the night. And I doubt I will for another decade. My kids fight sleep like it is painful for them to lie down and close their eyes. First, we have our 7-year-old. At bedtime, she is a master staller. The lights will be out, the lullaby music playing softly, and she will be regaling you with a recap of her day with so much enthusiasm you feel too guilty to cut her off. Next is the 2-year-old. His bedtime routine is a rotating list of quirks. Some nights he won’t go to sleep without a basketball in his crib. Other nights it’s an assortment of toy cars.

Holiday Gift Guide

From an American Girl Doll to a YMCA membership, we have 14 special gift ideas.

Sometimes he insists on wearing shoes to bed. He’s prone to wake up throughout the night and cry out for these items if we dare to remove them once he is finally asleep. Last is the 7-month-old. I had no expectations of her sleeping through the night, but she tricked us all in the beginning. At 4 months old, she was sleeping for six hours at a time so we put her in her own bedroom. It seemed too good to be true. And it was. Sleep regression hit us like a freight train. We are back to waking up every three hours at night. I almost wish we didn’t have a taste of that six-hour sleep stretch, because now I know what I’m missing. I’m not alone in my sleep deprivation. There is an entire tribe of us moms out there with dark circles under our eyes and extra large coffees in our hands. Our kids somehow function on barely any sleep, so we learn to as well. Y

Is My Child Addicted to Certainty?

T

oday’s kids expect certainty. Predictability. Knowing. Knowing exactly how things will turn out. And if they don’t know and can’t plan for each step, some freak out, struggling to tolerate the distress that comes with not knowing.

How Did Kids Get So Rigid? Have parents, teachers and professionals unknowingly created the expectation of certainty in today’s children? Perhaps this is a product of misguided advice from the mental health and education fields to create predictability to help kids feel secure in their environment. From infancy, parents are told to put their children on a strict schedule. Preschools have set routines to make class run smoothly. The well-intentioned use of predictability has led to the unintentional consequence of today’s kids lacking flexibility and coping skills in an uncertain world. One University of Louisville student said: “Growing up, everything in my life was scheduled.” Since college: “I realize that while the structure made me feel safe, it also made me uncomfortable with unexpected changes and a bit rigid in my routine.” So, now what? t Be mindful of what you model. When your child has slipped up, do you ask them for promises that “this will never happen again,” requesting certainty? Instead, discuss potential setbacks and how your child can decrease the possibility these could occur. t Catch your child when he’s stuck in the “what if” zone and try help him be in the moment. t Give your child the “gift of maybe.” Have conversations about not knowing the outcome of a situation with a focus on your child’s ability to handle uncertainty. 8 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

t Help your children remember a time when they weren’t certain of the outcome and remind them that they survived the past uncertainty, and maybe even had a fabulous time. t Have your child write down her biggest fear and ask herself, “Am I absolutely certain this is true?” Then have your child write “maybe” statements such as, “Maybe I will make the cheer team and maybe I won’t.” t Find opportunities where you do NOT provide concrete reassurance such as, “I don’t know if you’ll get shots at the pediatrician today. But I know if you do, you will make it through it.” These little parenting shifts that we make can lead to major change in our children’s ability to expect and tolerate distress. So, tomorrow when your child asks, “Am I going to make the select soccer team? Please, please, reassure me I will,” pause, think about the gift of uncertainty and say, “I don’t know. Maybe you will and maybe you won’t, but whatever the outcome, I know you have the skill to get through it.” Laura Bonzo-Sims, Ed.D. has been an educator for 25 years, serving as a college advisor, middle and high school English teacher, and graduate school professor. Fayette County Public Schools

District Is Alive With the Sound of Music By: Emmanuel Caulk

Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent

W

ith the holidays approaching, it’s not just the parking lots at the mall that are full. As you drive around Fayette County any night of the week this month, you’ll see school lots brimming with families flocking to concerts featuring the talents of our student musicians. Fayette County Public Schools is known across the Commonwealth for more than our academic prowess. Our bands, orchestras, choirs and teachers are also celebrated, and routinely bring home state and national honors in their fields! In fact, the 2017 state elementary music teacher of the year, 2017 state middle school teacher of the year, 2017 state outstanding music administrator and 2017 state string teacher of the year all work in our district. And did you know we have Grammy winners? Two FCPS teachers have earned Music Educator Awards from The Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Foundation. Additionally, Lafayette High School

received a Grammy Signature School Gold Award from the GRAMMY Foundation, which recognized the music department as one of the top seven programs in the U.S. And last month, the Lafayette marching band earned its 19th state championship. Add those to Dunbar High School’s seven state titles, and the state marching band champion has been from FCPS for 26 of the last 29 years! In the past year, student musicians from Fayette County were accepted to the Honor Band of America and the Kentucky Ambassadors of Music European tour. We had 118 students selected to All-State Jazz, Strings, Orchestra and Band Ensembles, 90 named to All-State Choruses, and 40 to the Governor’s School for the Arts. Results like these are possible because in Fayette County we believe in educating the whole child by providing each and every student with a well-rounded education that includes opportunities in music, art and world language. Our roughly 120 music teachers offer instruction in every school. In addition to general music classes, all interested students can take orchestra beginning in fourth grade and band starting in fifth

grade. These exceptional efforts to ensure that music education is part of our core curriculum led to FCPS being named one of America’s Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation in 2014. The designation recognizes the commitment of school and community leaders, and teachers and families who believe in music education and are working to ensure that it is part of a complete education for all children. That commitment is on full display this month when the sweet sounds of student choirs, bands, orchestras and ensembles fill the air. And that’s music to my ears! Y

Wilson Pediatric Therapy

Practice Expands Reach by Buying The Curious Edge

W

ilson Pediatric Therapy has found more ways to improve the lives of children in the Bluegrass after purchasing The Curious Edge from Kimberly Hudson. Owner Kresta Wilson and her team have joined forces with the staff at The Curious Edge to form a full service clinic that combines the expertise of two organizations under one roof. Kresta Wilson As of Dec. 1, Wilson Pediatric Therapy has moved into The Curious Edge offices off Ruccio Way in south Lexington. Wilson’s staff specializes in speech, occupational and physical therapy. The Curious Edge provides treatment for dyslexia, academic tutoring and ACT/Praxis preparation. “I wanted to continue the work that Kimberly and her staff were doing because I knew they were making such a big difference in so many lives. It’s a huge deal when you teach kids to read,” said Wilson, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UK in speech-language pathology and has 12 years experience in the field. Wilson traces her interest in helping others to childhood, recalling the experience of ailing relatives. Her greatgrandmother regained her speech, lost to a stroke, after working with a therapist. When Wilson visited a great-aunt in a rehab facility, she remembers thinking, “This is amazing – people helping others learn to walk and talk again, getting back things they had lost.” Wilson started her career as a therapist for the state’s First Steps program, providing treatment for children birth to 3 years old in their homes. “I loved that work and I still do,” said Wilson, who treats children in her clinic from as far away as Ashland. When she and husband Josh sought occupational therapy for the oldest of their three children, they were met with waiting lists at most clinics. “I knew there was a community need for our services,” Wilson said. So she launched a true family business. Her mother, Amy Billingsley, handles the billing. Her father David helps with financial planning, and her husband Josh, a guidance counselor in Lexington, maintains the web site and oversees marketing. With the new expanded services, Wilson Pediatric Therapy can treat the whole child. “Our therapists can collaborate so they can better identify underlying issues that are holding a child back,” Wilson said. “This allows us to help kids build a good solid foundation for success.” Info: (859) 475-4305, (859) 899-7323 or http:// wilsonpediatric.com Y 18 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

Why Teens Try to Sleep All Weekend

T

eenagers are legendary for sleeping all weekend if they are allowed. They do need a certain amount of sleep, 8-10 hours a night, to function properly. One study showed that only 15% of teens even got 8½ hours of sleep at night. The sleeping on weekends is usually an attempt to make up the sleep deficit that teens build during the week. Many important things happen when we sleep. For example, most of the growth hormone we make is secreted during this time. We have an internal clock that influences the 24-hour patterns of our lives (circadian rhythms), including when we go to sleep and when we wake up. In teenagers, this clock changes. They develop a sleep phase delay of two hours, so that they usually have a hard time getting to sleep before 11 p.m. With such a late desired bedtime, getting enough sleep on weekdays becomes difficult.

Testimonials Through the Years

n the10 years that we have published articles about Dr. Rick Graebe and his work with Vision Therapy, we have heard ringing endorsements about the treatment from parents of Dr. Graebe’s young patients. Below is a sampling of what we’ve heard in the past four years alone. Ben Burgess was a 14-year-old Georgetown boy who struggled with reading. Said his mother Sarah: “The exam was thorough and they gave us great information about Ben’s situation. Dr. Graebe is a wealth of information.” “I have to say the staff was phenomenal. They explained that they were resetting his brain pathways and that once his eyes, brain and body were re-trained, he would never lose it.” Kristie McIntyre’s 11-year-old son, Morton, would skip entire lines when he read.

Said Kristie: “Morton knows how proud and humbled we are by what he accomplished. Vision Therapy helped with his confidence, and it really is paying off and making a difference.” Jennifer Lord’s 10-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, finished first grade and still couldn’t read. “We are so happy that we went to Dr. Graebe,” Jennifer said. “I wish anyone who needs this has the opportunity to do it.”

as a parent to cry yourself to sleep because your child is struggling. If I can help another parent going through that, absolutely I will. This is a great job.” Chris Case was an 8-year-old third grader diagnosed with autism when his parents, Harold and Rebecca, brought him to Dr. Graebe. Said Rebecca: “It was as if Chris’ world started to open up. He is now talking a lot more and it is actually making sense to others. “After years of not being able to get Chris to talk, I was devastated. But to see Chris getting better as Vision Therapy went on made me zealous about it all. “I am extremely excited about Chris continuing to succeed and grow.” Y

Amy Holtzclaw’s daughter, Emily, was seeing double and didn’t know it. She also was clumsy. Right after Emily started treatment she came home from school and said: “I ran up the steps without looking at them and I didn’t have to hold on to the railing.” Amy was so impressed, she Dr. Rick Graebe quit her job as a teacher and Family Eyecare Associates & went to work for Dr. Graebe. Versatility Is the Name Of Her Game

Isabel Pergande SCHOOL: Sayre School GRADE: 12 SPORT: Soccer, basketball ACADEMICS: Isabel is a straight-A student, scored 30 on the ACT, has taken 6 A.P. classes and is a member of the school’s Honor Council. PARENTS: Delia & Tom

hether it’s on the soccer field, basketball court, in the classroom or wherever she finds herself, Isabel Pergande of Sayre School epitomizes versatility. The 18-year-old senior carries a 4.25 weighted GPA and has never received a grade lower than an A. She scored 30 on the ACT and has taken six A.P. classes but don’t try to pinpoint her strongest subject. A member of four Honor Societies (National, Spanish, Math and Art), Isabel is a strong math and science student who won a school humanities award. She sits on the school’s Honor Council, participates in the mock government and U.N. clubs, is a member of the campus Young Democrats and is active at her church. An elected youth Elder Youth, she has taken mission trips to Detroit, New Orleans and Guatemala. An admirer of Andy Warhol, she’s also a gifted painter, working in Anime and Pop Art. Hard work, attention to detail and good organizational skills fuel Isabel’s academic success. And it also helps that she’s competitive. “I enjoy competing with my classmates,” she said with a grin. “Isabel takes instruction to heart,” said her mom, Delia, a history teacher at Sayre. “Her middle school Spanish teacher told her to label items in her

room in Spanish and that’s exactly what Isabel did.” For her college essay, she wrote a rough draft in the summer, has solicited feedback from different people and is close to a finished version. With all her various interests, Isabel is considering varying paths in college: architecture, engineering, maybe the law. She’d also like to work soccer into her college experience. Lightning fast and nearly 6-foot tall, Isabel is a matchup nightmare. That’s why she plays all over the field – outside and center midfielder and center forward. This year, she was officially declared a roaming midfielder. Versatility again. Isabel led Sayre in scoring (20 goals) and assists (12) this year and was named to the All-District tournament team. Last year, she was All-City honorable mention. Versatility is her strong suit in basketball too. The team’s two-time leading free-throw shooter, Isabel was All-City honorable mention for Sayre, which won the All-A Regional title. Isabel was named to the All-A Regional Tournament team. No matter what she chooses for college, Isabel will undoubtedly succeed. “I set goals for myself and I’m very determined,” she said. We already see what she means. Y
