Recommendations From 4 Teachers

Rachel Losch Art Teacher Dixie Magnet Elementary 22 years experience

“Scope Out the Trip”

G

etting the lay of the land is crucial before Losch commits to a field trip for her students. The teachers at Dixie work together to make sure field trips fit their content and budget, so making sure they get the most bang for their buck is one of Losch’s specialities. Often the teachers will discover a location they want to visit and then build the lesson plan around the trip, sort of a “backwards planning.” Losch will visit the potential locations and feel out the engagement levels for the students, then she can explain to the teaching teams what to expect from the visit. By visiting sites in advance, Losch said, you not only find what connects best to your content, but you can find out if anything needs to be tweaked by the staff. “If you can’t go in person, call the venue,” she said. “They can often customize what you want to do. They are the specialists at this.” 12

Nami Stager STEM Lab Instructor Wellington Elementary 10 years experience

S

“Bring the Trip to You”

tager sees about 630 students a week in her STEM lab, ranging from grades K-5. To ensure that all her students can experience a field trip without the hassle of transporting the entire school, she relies on in-school field trips. “Field trips in the classroom are great when you aren’t a homeroom teacher who can pack up 20-30 kids for a bus trip,” Stager said. A perk of on-site field trips is that organizations often leave behind more than just a memory for her students. They will often loan out their materials to the classroom for a few extra weeks, or plan a project the children can keep working on long after the visit ends. “The on-site field trips can often help you start projects, then you can continue them in your classroom and they can break up the time as the teacher needs,” Stager said. “On-site field trips are usually very customizable.”

Susan Keegan Third Grade Teacher Sayre School 15 years experience

“Hands-On Helps Retention”

S

ayre School is known for projectbased learning, which allows the children to identify areas that interest them and work them into the content. Keegan knows that using field trips to fuel these interests makes it more likely the students will retain what they learn. For a project about the city of Lexington, students visited the local government building, sat in the council chambers and even passed an ordinance about ice cream. “If you can see something, it’s much better than reading it,” Keegan said. “They’re more likely to remember that the executive branch of local government is the mayor’s office if they’ve been there instead of just reading about it.” Keegan points out that many trips can be free if a teacher is willing to just make a few calls. “So many city agencies are willing to come through if you just call,” she said. “Field trips are crucial to inspiring the children and tugging at their curiosity, so it never hurts to ask or trade in on any connections you have.”

Art Teacher, Field Trip Coordinator Lexington Latin School 6 years experience

“Fun is Priority Number One”

W

hen planning field trips, “fun” is at the top of the list for Jacobs. “I’m a firm believer in fun at this age, and it’s great if the kids learn something along the way,” she said. “The more fun they’re having, the more open they are to learning.” Jacobs knows that hands-on experiences excite kids more than sitting still. For example, Jacobs is looking forward to a field trip to Jefferson Memorial Forest, where students read an adventure-themed book in advance, then try their hand at survival skills. The book list includes “Hatchet,” “My Side of the Mountain” and “Sign of the Beaver.” Students learn to identify wild plants, build a shelter and start a fire just like the characters from the books. Parent chaperones can also enjoy the fun of field trips. Field trips are an ideal chance to have low-stress fun with your children. “Parents get so invested in the day-today activities, sometimes you don’t stop to smell the roses. “On field trips you can do that, in an environment that enables good bonding time.”
