Three Is Not A Crowd, But It Is Messy Chaos

V

eteran parents with large families told me that going from one to two children was the hardest transition. But going from two to three would be no big deal. A month in to life with my third baby and I can confidently announce – Those other parents are liars. Parenting three kids isn’t exactly a whole new ball game. It’s the same ball game, but your teammates are rowdy, screaming children, the rules keep changing and no one has a clean uniform because you can’t keep up with the laundry. Friends and acquaintances ask me how it’s going. I used to just smile and say “it’s good!” because I was too sleep-deprived to elaborate. But I realize that is doing a disservice to any parent who might be considering having a third child. Instead, now I answer bluntly: Life is a circus. It’s insane. Things are way harder

than they were a few short months ago. Life with two was a cakewalk compared to this. I recently made a trip to the grocery store with all three children. “How bad can it be?” I naively thought to myself. We hadn’t even made it into the store before I had a fussy baby, a toddler sprawled out on the pavement midtantrum and a 6-year-old asking me if her brother’s behavior affected her chances of getting a treat in the store. I don’t say these things to scare anyone. I am not saying things are bad. Chaos reigns in our home most days, but I’m not mad about it. It’s just a new dynamic. My family is learning how to navigate this new normal. It’s a messy, noisy road we are now on with three kids in the car (which is littered with crushed Goldfish crackers and broken crayon bits.) But we are finding our rhythm and making sense of it all, one step at a time. Y

Fourth of July Snack The Fourth of July often means cookouts and barbecues. Here is a light and healthy snack option that is still festive and fun. Ingredients: Strawberries; Blackberries or Blueberries; Bananas; and Kabob skewers Directions: Cut the tops off the strawberries and slice the bananas into equal pieces. Skewer the fruit onto the kabobs in an alternating pattern of strawberry, banana, blackberry (red, white and blue.) Leave a few inches at the bottom of each kabob for easy pickup. Arrange on a plate and serve. (Substitute the banana slices with mini-marshmallows if you want to make this recipe as a dessert!) Y

Each month we consult with experts – our readers! – about parenting and ask a question on our Facebook page. June’s Question was:

What is your best tip for summer travel with kids? t “When my family travels we always leave in the middle of the night, the girls are sound asleep, there’s no traffic, and after a few hours the sun starts to rise, makes the first part of a long drive peaceful.” – Laura Segari John t “I go to the Dollar Tree with my kids and make a travel basket full of fun activities to keep the children busy. We also leave when it is still dark so the kiddos will sleep a large portion of the drive.” – Shannon Nichole t “Plan ahead for snacks and drinks because kids eat out of boredom. Buy those little disposable cups with lids for snacks. It makes it easier to have already portioned snacks.” – Vicki Weaver t “Snacks (plenty!) and lots of things to keep them occupied. My family enjoys playing the ABC game where as you travel you look for things that start with each letter from A-Z.” – Jessica Day. July Feedback Question:

LCT's Summer Musical:

L Single Parents: You Are Not Alone

W

hether by choice or by circumstance, almost half of parents find themselves raising their children alone. This is often done while working one or more jobs, and sometimes done with the stress of not having a steady income. Daunting? Yes. Exhausting? Absolutely. The good news is that there are ways to keep yourself encouraged and to navigate a difficult course with grace. Here are some ideas from one single parent: t Have faith that it is going to be okay. t You are enough. Everyone has challenges in life. You don’t have to be everything: just be you. t Be generous to yourself. It’s easier to be kind to others when you are kind to yourself. t Avoid allowing yourself to feel like a victim. You always have choices and there is power in that. t Everyone makes mistakes, has breakdowns and hurts. Let yourself feel it, but don’t take it out on your child or in front of your kid. t Keep your self-talk positive. “It won’t be like this forever.” “He will grow up and we will work together. My child will be a help to me.” “I can do anything for a short period of time.” t Practical Ideas: t Schedule everything. Use a calendar. You may have a second job, be caring for aging parents, and taking your child to sports and other activities. Good prep is half the battle. Otherwise, you feel like you are just putting out fires. t Create a village. Reach out to friends, family, church. Find a place where you can be fed emotionally and spiritually. You don’t have to do this all on your own. t Find one thing that nourishes you and 8 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

do it consistently. Don’t wait until you feel empty. Walk around the block, have a “wish” shopping trip, pet animals at the Humane Society. Keeping your cup full is fundamental to everything else.

UPPORT SPECIFICALLY FOR parents who are single can be challenging to find. Immanuel Baptist Church and Southland Christian Church offer programs in the spring and fall. The Family Center in Wilmore hosts “Single Parent Power” on the second Saturday of each month from 5-7 p.m., starting up again in August. Children are welcome and there is a shared meal. Info: 859-553-2484 or www. wilmorefamilycenter.com Most parenting classes include a mix of single, divorced and married parents. It is wise to build your knowledge about helpful ways to connect with and teach children. It is very true that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Joining a parenting class gives you an opportunity to be pro-active and strengthen yourself and your children. You are not alone. Dr. Lesley Iwinski is the mother of three grown children, a family physician and owner of Growing Peaceful Families, LLC. She offers classes, workshops and seminars. Ways of the Woods Tips for Introducing Children to the Outdoors

S

By Bill Carman

limy fish. Bugs. A branch scratching the tent on a windy night. A bear behind every tree. Getting lost. Or... The glisten of a dewdrop on a spider web. The music of wild geese. The splendor of a butterfly. The tug of a fish on the line. The beauty of wildflowers and autumn colors. A child’s perspective of the outdoors can be a nightmare or a magical encounter. How parents introduce children to the experience can affect their relationship with the outdoor world for the rest of their lives. As a society, we have drifted away from our agrarian roots, from farms to cities. A century ago, a 10-year-old was at home in the milking barn or in the woods. Today’s 10-year-old is more at home in front of the TV or computer, or at best, playing soccer. The outdoors is colored by what Disney brings into our living rooms. Our children do not see the link between the Big Mac and the cow. We are no longer participants in the web of life, and many of our children are not exposed to the process, just the products. Exposure to nature is vital to understanding the world as a whole and how we fit. Here are some tips for introducing a child to the outdoors.

Go Step by Step The Girl Scouts use an eight-step program that begins with simple outdoor experiences, progresses through outside cooking and cabin sleeping, and culminates with multi-day camping trips. Outdoor experiences are targeted that offer a good balance between quality and quantity, are authentic, stimulate all of the senses, have web-of-life relationships, are challenging, fun, have low environmental impact, involve the girls in the planning, and utilize positive role models. Begin With Immediate Gratification Remember that small children have little patience. For instance, take a beginning angler to a pond where catching lots of bluegill is a sure bet. Find a Mentor My parents were not outdoorsy, but my grandmother was, and she taught me how to fish. I had a neighbor who taught me to track game, trap and to “walk a little and look a lot.” Now, every time I entice a trout to a fly or harvest a buck, I pay tribute to those two fine people. Mentors can be found in scout troops, churches, PTA’s, and conservation organizations. Vary Your Outdoor Experiences Take them to Raven Run, McConnell Springs or the Salato Wildlife Center. Get them involved in Scouting. Many

conservation non-profits such as the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and National Wild Turkey Federation have youth programs. Think Big My hands-down recommendation for the ultimate youth outdoor experience is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota. It is not expensive, and the experience can range from canoeing around a beautiful lake and staying in a public campground, to paddling deep into the wilderness, carrying your camping gear and seeing no one for days on end. The cry of a loon on a misty northern lake is an experience no child should miss.

Distracted Driving is Deadly Driving Are you driving while talking/texting on a phone, eating, with a dog in the lap, or a new driver? Driving drowsy, aggressively, drunk, or drugged? These activities take attention away from the task of driving. We need to work together to build a culture that makes distracted driving unacceptable. Ask a driver who is on the phone to please hang up and drive.

Associates in Pediatric Therapy

By John Lynch

n hindsight, it seems only fitting that Renea Sageser would become the driving force behind a fastgrowing pediatric therapy company that specializes in serving families in rural areas. Sageser, the founder and CEO of Associates in Pediatric Therapy, needed speech therapy as a child. Because her family lived in a rural Tennessee, they drove an hour each way to get the care Renea needed. Renea’s roles switched when she was 17 and drove her mother to therapy after she suffered from a traumatic brain injury. No wonder Sageser earned a degree in Communication Disorders and her master’s in Speech Pathology from Murray State University. After working in a variety of pediatric settings such as schools, hospitals, and private clinics, Sageser, a stay-at-home mom at the time (she and husband Scott have four children), she hatched the idea for APT. In January 2008, she opened her first clinic in Shelbyville with six parttime employees. Less than 10 years later, Associates in Pediatric Therapy has locations in Louisville, Lexington, Southern Indiana, Erlanger, Shelby, Bullitt and Oldham Counties with 150 employees including over 100 therapists who treat approximately 2,000 patients per week. “Sometimes in life we think the most tragic accident or birth of a child with a disorder means we should just give up and have pity on ourselves. Shame on us…,” Sageser said. “Everything happens for a reason. There are no mistakes. It’s what we do next that matters. “I think back to my mom's accident and if it wasn't for that, I may have not decided to be a therapist. If I hadn't chosen this career then over 15,000 lives would not have been touched or changed by APT. “God has a plan for all of us. I truly believe that we can all make a difference and improve ourselves. APT’s mission is to help children advance to their next level. We truly believe that all of us can make improvements and change lives if we just try.” 16 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

Curious Edge

What Exactly Is Dyslexia and Who Can Diagnose It? By Kimberly Hudson

I

am often asked by parents and educators, “Just what is dyslexia?” Dyslexia is a learning disability, which is neurological in origin and presents as having difficulty in word recognition, spelling and decoding. These difficulties are present despite having proper intelligence and being in a good learning environment. Surprisingly, dyslexia affects one in five – that is 20% of the population. Kimberly Hudson There are three areas of the brain that are activated in normal readers. Functional MRI’s have shown us that the dyslexic brain over-activates the frontal lobe but under-activates two posterior brain regions. Disorganized nerve pathways prevent consistent activation of all three areas of the brain required for reading. Dyslexia can be diagnosed by a qualified medical doctor, psychologist or speech-language pathologist. There is no single test that can diagnose dyslexia. A person’s developmental, medical, educational and family history all have to be reviewed along with test scores, report cards, teacher comments and responses to academic interventions. This information is then considered along with results of a variety of standardized and non-standardized assessments. There is a clinical marker evident in every piece of formal and informal data that a trained specialist can identify as dyslexia. Like any other area of expertise, it takes hours and hours of specialized instruction in addition to years of clinical experience to become a qualified specialist in the field of dyslexia. It is also important to know how to differentiate between dyslexia, ADHD, auditory processing disorders and any other learning disability. Once identified, dyslexia can be treated. Neural pathways in the brain can be built to help bring reading and spelling skills up to grade level. Parents, be encouraged! Know that with the proper diagnosis and intervention, your child can receive the tools needed to succeed. We can even improve overall IQ! Our students often surpass their grade level reading expectations, process information quicker, improve their math skills and learn to study more efficiently and effectively. Take a deep breath and know your child will achieve all that you dreamed and more. Autism Society of the Bluegrass

Raising Awareness, Supporting Families

F

or more than a quarter of a century, the all-volunteer members of the Autism Society of the Bluegrass have raised awareness and provided support to families in Central Kentucky. That was particularly important in 1991 when the group formed and myths about autism ruled the day. Charter members – parents all – faced obstacles in the schools and the culture at large. “There was so little information about autism back then,” said Hazel Forsythe, a founding member along with her husband Vibert. Their son Vahl, who has autism, is 27. “Our mission was to educate our children, to advocate for services and to share information.” So they did. Meeting once a month with other caregivers, members supported and educated each other and others – including educators. “We did training for teachers where our kids were,” Hazel Forsythe said. “We

advocated for inclusion, and teachers were very receptive because they knew this information would make it easier for them to manage our children and include them in the class.” ASBG members explained their children’s sensitivity to everything from lighting in the classroom to the importance of routine and structure. They also appeared at Board of Education meetings to share research and data demonstrating how children with autism could flourish in school. Meanwhile, the group’s monthly meetings – held the last Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church – tackled substantive issues. Examples: Educating police about dealing with people with autism; and how to secure Medicaid Waivers. Over the years, the group has grown to include a listserve with 470 names. Current Board members include President Sara Spragens, Treasurers Vibert Forsythe and Todd Page, Secretary Wendy Wheeler-Mullins plus

Sherri Brothers, Jo Grayson and Melanie Tyner-Wilson. Other founding members are Virginia Moody and Tanya and David Montgomery. “The best thing about the group,’ said Tyner-Wilson, whose son Jay is 24, “is that it is a place where you don’t have to explain your child’s behavior. Everyone understands. They get it. “That’s what’s powerful about a parent support group.” The group’s biggest event of the year reflects its mission. The annual Bluegrass Autism Walk – this year sponsored by Toyota and held on Sept. 10 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark – features a Resource Fair. Along with crafts, games and facepainting for kids, experts in speech and occupational therapy are present. Other exhibitors include UK Healthcare, Lex. Parks and Recreation, Special Olympics, and Access Inc., which provides information on Medicaid Waivers. “I’m proud of what we have accomplished with our advocacy and support,” Tyner-Wilson said. “Members of the group have become my best friends. I’ll be a member for life.” Y

Should You Give Kids Probiotics?

T

he number of products containing probiotics and the interest in using them have grown dramatically in recent years. The concept of probiotics, though, has been known by the medical community for over a hundred years. Back in 1907, French pediatrician Henry Tissier noted that children with diarrhea had a low number of certain (“bifid) bacteria in their bowel movements as compared to healthy children. He postulated that giving these sick children these bacteria could help restore their microflora (the bacteria and other microscopic organisms that live in our guts) to a healthy state. Probiotics are defined as supplements or foods that contain viable micro-organisms that cause alterations of the microflora of the host. Prebiotics are defined as supplements or foods that contain a non-digestible food ingredient that selectively stimulates the favorable growth and/or activity of

track athlete at Indiana University back in the day, Dr. Rick Graebe has always enjoyed sports. Now he’s part of the A Team. Formed by renowned sports vision pioneer, Dr. Don Teig, the A Team is a nationwide collection of doctors who specialize in enhancing performance, particularly in sports. The group consists mainly of optometrists but also includes physical therapists, nutritionists and athletic trainers. During his long career, Teig has worked with the New York Yankees, including All-Stars Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, plus more than 100 other professional athletes and a dozen sports teams and the University of Connecticut athletes. In the 1990s, Teig’s proteges worked with Andres Galarraga. After an evaluation found that Galarraga had a strong dominant right eye, sports vision doctors advised that Galarraga bat with an open stance.

Run 7,000 Miles? That’s No Sweat for Cole

T

Cole Ralenkotter SCHOOL: Henry Clay High GRADE: 12 SPORTS: Track, crosscountry, swimming. ACADEMICS: Cole has a weighted 4.77 GPA, scored 30 on the ACT, has taken 7 A.P. classes and is a National Honor Society member. PARENTS: Lisa & Bill

alk about cross-country. In his four-year Henry Clay High career in track and cross-country, Cole Ralenkotter has run more than 7,000 miles. That’s enough to run across the country and back again with plenty of miles left over. Combined with his two years on the swim team, Cole, 18, has been a member of eight teams that competed for a State title. The track team – with Cole running on the 4x800 relay – won back-to-back State championships when he was a sophomore and junior. He also qualified for State as an individual in the 3,200 and the mile (twice). He’s the Henry Clay recordholder in the mile. The Blue Devil cross-country team qualified for State all four years Cole was a member. He was the No. 1 runner as a junior and senior when he was the team MVP. Two years ago he joined the swim team and swam on the 4x50 relay team that qualified for the State meet. All three of those sports demand maximum exertion, and Cole is a hard worker. It’s just that it never shows. He is a relaxed athlete with a casual air about him. “I enjoy what I do so that takes away the stress,” he said. “I don’t get nervous and I’m pretty calm.”

Scholar Athlete Scholarship: $3,000 Two Scholar Athletes a year will be picked at random to share the $3,000 Darrell B. Pulliam Memorial Scholarship provided by Mike Pulliam, a Rector Hayden Realtor and instructor at Man O’ War Golf. Other contributors are Howard Smith of Smith Garage Equipment, Barry and Mike Barrett of Auto Excel, local accountant Kenny Frank and Dairy Queen franchise owner Paul Wright. 38 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

He’s the same way in the classroom – relaxed, never burning the midnight oil, and he’s still one of the school’s top students. He has a 4.78 weighted GPA, scored 30 on the ACT, is a National Honor Society member and has taken seven A.P. classes. Morehead State recruited him for track and cross-country, but then he received a full-ride Honors Scholarship, an academic grant that trumped the athletic offer. While running track and cross-country at Morehead, he plans to study biology to prepare for medical school. He has the right character for medicine – he likes helping people. Active in church, he volunteers for the Catholic Action Center that works with the homeless. At Henry Clay, he served on the Youth Service Advisory Council that provides resources for needy students. Cole also mentored a fellow student as part of the Equity in Advanced Placement program that pairs upperclassmen with A.P. test experience with younger minority students. Again, he’s very active in a relaxed, almost carefree way. “In school I like to challenge myself. It’s a way to keep myself entertained,” he said. “I know I’ll be able to get all my work done, so I don’t have to worry about it." Y
