Vol. 19 Issue 10
Another Birthday, Another Growth Spurt
P
lenty has changed since 1997 when Lexington Family Magazine was first published. We’ve gone from film cameras to Facebook albums, landlines to smart phones, and hairstyles and clothing fads have cycled out and back in again. Although the magazine’s mission has remained steadfast for the past 19 years – to serve Central Kentucky families – much has changed in these pages. I joined the magazine team six years ago, shortly after becoming a new mom. I’ve spent time rifling through filing cabinets of yellowing issues of “Lexington Kids,” as it was once called, and I am astonished at the growth this publication has undergone. One of my duties here is to compile the monthly events calendar. In 1997, the calendar in October consisted of 120 events and took up two pages. The October 2016 issue you are reading right now has 616 events spanning 11 pages.

I added “social media manager” to my roles in January of this year, a job title that certainly did not exist at the time of the magazine’s conception. This change allows us to communicate with readership in a way I don’t think anyone anticipated 19 years ago. The magazine has gone from black and white to full color, and from news print to a glossy publication. Lexington Family has added more columnists, expanded the maternity coverage, ventured into elder care issues, and created successful community events such as the Annual Summer Camps & Activities Fair, the elementary school Writing Contest and the Fit Family Challenge. All the while, we have continued to celebrate education, to encourage healthy living and to support community events that bring people together. Not bad for a 19-year-old. Let’s see what we look like in the year 2035. Y

WIN TRIP TO
OPRYLAND
AT 16TH ANNUAL
ELDER CARE TOUR
F
or the fourth year in a row, Lexington Family Magazine will offer an exciting giveaway contest to attendees of the 16th annual Elder Care tour in November. The magazine is giving away two Gaylord Opryland Vacation Packages, including two nights accommodation for two, and two tickets to “ICE!,” featuring Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The Country Christmas package also includes two tickets to “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas;” Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers Christmas Dinner show; Treasures for the Holidays and Delta Riverboats inside the hotel. To enter to win, merely visit one of the retirement communities participating in the Tour, which is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 6, 1:30-5 p.m. The names of all communities with directions and descriptions will be published in the November issue of Lexington Family Magazine.
T
he Tour not only provides a chance to win these exciting prizes, it’s also an opportunity to educate yourself about housing options for older adults in Central Kentucky, which features some of the state’s best retirement communities. The Tour is designed for older adults, their adult children and other caregivers. All too often, older adults and Sandwich Generation folks find themselves forced by crisis to make immediate decisions about their own care, the care of a spouse or the care of an aging parent. Having to make these decisions under a deadline is stressful. What if you knew ahead of time what facilities and services were available for yourself or your loved ones? What if you knew where you’d like to retire or where you could go for rehabilitation services? The Tour can provide those answers.
O
n Sunday, Nov. 6, participating retirement communities in Central Kentucky will host free open houses, which are designed to let visitors educate themselves about elder care housing options in a relaxed, unpressured atmosphere. Mark your calendar for this event, and get your copy of the November issue or visit our website for details. Info: www.LexingtonFamily.com or 223-1765. Y 4 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

“Follow the Trail: Trucks” by DK Publishing
Review by Mary Edinger Shive, a Lexington mother of a 2-year-old
R
un, don’t walk to get a copy of this book.
The first thing my 2-year-old son said when he saw this book was, “Wow, Mom, is that book for me? It looks so shiny and fun, I want to read it right now.” And read it we did ... many many times. The first few times through the book he would ask us to trace the lines and he would put his hand on top of ours. After the third time he announced “I got this” and began to trace the glittery lines of the paths that each truck would take across the pages. The words and graphics kept his interest in addition to the bright and glittery trails. Each time we read the book was a new adventure for him as he would make up additional stories and ask questions about what each truck was doing and its upcoming destination. This book would be a wonderful addition to any library for children 2-5 years old. Y

‘Fancy Nancy,’ ‘Frankenstein’
T ‘PEACEFUL PARENT’ BOOK ENLIGHTENS LOCAL MOM
E
llen Fairbanks of Lexington is the mother of 3½- and 2-yearold boys and is expecting her third child in November. She participated in a book club this summer and says the experience was lifechanging for her and her young family. The book she read was “Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids,” by Dr. Laura Markham. (You can visit Dr. Laura’s website www. ahaparenting.com and subscribe to her timely, practical newsletter.) “I could have read the book on my own and gathered a great deal of info,” Ellen said, “but being in the book club was more life-changing for me. “Hearing other moms talk about their situations, and having a mentor to guide us was amazing.” Ellen benefited from listening to the views of a variety of moms – stay-at-home moms, working moms, and a grandmother. What was the most important thing she learned? “Breathing. And mindfulness,” she said. “I felt like before when something was escalating, like while I’m trying to cook dinner or do a project or something, I was more likely to send the children to their room because I couldn’t handle them. “Now I breathe and am more mindful. If dinner’s not made in time, or things don’t always get done, it’s ok. “The social and emotional needs of my children are the most important ones.” Emphasizing the importance of time spent with her sons is a top priority. 8 | www.lexingtonfamily.com
“The boys are learning how to interact with one another, and their relationship is growing,” Ellen said. “I use words from the book such as ‘problem-solving.’ ‘How can we handle this problem?’ “I’ve heard my 3½-year-old say, ‘We need to solve this problem’ to his younger brother.” When asked why a parent should read this particular book, she joked, “For their sanity!” “You are teaching social and emotional development, how to be respectful… things that are applicable throughout all their lives and careers. “It isn’t just a way to stop one or two behaviors that are driving you crazy. “That’s what I like the most: It is something for the long haul, not just for the short term.” Ellen has encouraging words of her own to share. “As parents it’s so hard. There are never enough hours in the day,” she said. “It’s hard to do something for yourself sometimes. Joining a book club seems like it would be selfish and just for you, but a book club like this can benefit your whole family.” Dr. Lesley Iwinski is the mother of three grown children, a family physician and Executive Director of The Parent and Family Enrichment Center, Inc. and Growing Peaceful Families. She offers classes, workshops and seminars. Info: (859) 333-3053 or www. GrowingPeacefulFamilies.com. Y

he Lexington Children’s Theatre will host two shows in October, starting with “Fancy Nancy The Musical” on Oct. 1-2, and ending with “Frankenstein” at the end of the month. “Fancy Nancy” tells the story of Nancy Clancy, who must reckon with being cast as a boring old tree in her school’s dance recital. This musical re-creation of Jane O’Conner’s books is recommended for kids ages 4 and up and will be performed on the Main Stage. Show times are 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2. Tickets are $18 and $15 for children. In “Frankenstein,” the audience will see the classic story of Victor Frankenstein, whose experiments lead to a major discovery: the power to create life itself. This adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel is recommended for kids ages 9 and up and will be performed on the Lexington Children’s Theatre Learning Stage. Show times are 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30. Tickets are $15. Info: (859) 254-4546 x245 Y

It doesn’t have to be a gift card to have value. We plan to make coupons for trips to the library, the playground or other adventures she dreams up. By giving her a physical object to redeem for our time, we’re giving her the ability to recognize what she is feeling and ask for help in remedying it before it spirals into a meltdown or tantrum for attention. By Kimberly Hudson
had the opportunity recently to share my passion, which is wrapped in a package called The Curious Edge Foundation, at a taping at the WKYT-TV studio of Heart of Gold. Heart of Gold highlights nonprofit organizations in Lexington. I took a student with me, Olivia Brewer, 17, who was recently diagnosed with dyslexia Kimberly Hudson and ADHD. & Olivia Brewer Coincidentally, October is National Dyslexia Awareness Month and ADHD Awareness Month. Olivia worked two to three times harder in school as her peers but was determined to make good grades ... and she did. Olivia completed our cognitive interventions at The Curious Edge and is currently working on ACT Prep. She is also volunteering at our office through her work-study program at Lafayette High. She is an articulate, outstanding young woman who is willing to share her struggles. I am passionate about these learning differences because dyslexia affects one in five people, and ADHD is a coexisting condition 40% of the time. Dyslexia can only be diagnosed by a medical doctor, trained psychologist or speech-language pathologist. Early warning signs include confusion about right versus left, difficulty learning to tie shoes, struggling to learn/write the alphabet and struggling to write your entire name correctly. By third or fourth grade, comprehension issues can emerge because children work so hard to recognize words they have little energy left to comprehend them. These children can spend hours studying for a test, only to receive a poor grade, which can erode confidence. If not addressed by middle school, these struggles can increase the risk of school avoidance, poor choices and even juvenile detention. There is a solution. Often, these are bright kids with an average to above average IQ. They simply need to be taught differently. They need tools for academic success, and these tools are nearly as vital as food and shelter. You cannot provide for your family without being educated enough to get a job. I want to be their voice, advocating for their needs. By giving these kids the academic tools they need, we are increasing their chance of success and increasing their chance of making a positive contribution to our community. Head Bumps Should Not be Ignored
O
ur brains are very soft and delicate, sort of like big blobs of gelatin or uncooked tofu. They are suspended in our hard, bony skulls by layers of tissue called meninges. Cerebrospinal fluid fills most of the space in between our brains and our skulls – the fluid cushions our brains against normal everyday jostling. If we receive a hard enough blow to the head, or if we are shaken hard enough, we can sustain a brain injury. The brain’s functioning can be altered by such trauma – this is called a concussion. Sometimes, a bleed in the brain or around the brain can occur. This may increase the pressure on the brain to dangerous levels. Young children, especially infants and toddlers, may be unable to explain how they feel after a head injury. Certain symptoms must be monitored in determining what kind of medical help (if any) needs to be sought. It is certainly wise to call a young child’s

My daughter, my Passport case manager, and me. When I told her what happened to my daughter, my case manager got busy. She called around to find someone who could provide my daughter with physical therapy in our home. I’d never heard of a health insurance plan going above and beyond like that. Thanks to her, my little girl has a chance to walk again.

Dr. Graebe Sees the Light (Therapy)
D
r. Rick Graebe, a behavioral optometrist in Versailles, is a visual specialist who thinks outside the box, but even he was skeptical of syntonic-photo therapy or light therapy. Here’s how it works: Patients look down a device called a syntonizer, a twoand-a-half foot tube with a light bulb at the bottom equipped with different filters. Proponents claim that the filtered light alters photo receptors in brain cells that boost a patient’s visual system. “Nobody was a bigger skeptic than me,” Dr. Graebe said. Since 1990, Dr. Graebe has practiced Visual Therapy, which is a kind of physical therapy for the eyes, mind and body that treats the entire visual system. When he heard about syntonic-photo therapy, it sounded “too far out there.” Despite his skepticism, his peers told him success story after success story treating migraines, lazy eye and other visual issues. When Should My Family Consider Hospice Care
A
ll patients and families faced with a serious illness have needs that are individual to them. Hospice of the Bluegrass is here to help and offer support. In fact, the earlier eligible patients are admitted to Hospice, the more they and their families can benefit from the scope of services provided. Signs that may alert a family or medical provider that a patient could be eligible for hospice are: t Frequent visits to the emergency room and/or recurring hospitalizations t Uncontrolled pain or other symptoms that continue to affect a patient’s quality of life t Increasing dependence on others to meet daily needs t Patient’s goals of care evolve
more toward comfort and quality of life and less toward aggressive intervention. Hospice of the Bluegrass staff members are available to meet with patients and their families/ caregivers to answer questions and to evaluate whether patients are eligible for hospice. Hospice staff will go to the doctor’s office, the hospital or the patient’s place of residence. If, during this evaluation, the patient chooses Hospice of the Bluegrass and the doctor approves of this decision, admission to the program can occur immediately. Hospice of the Bluegrass is honored to serve patients and their families/ caregivers.

ow eager is Eva Mitchell of West Jessamine High to start her collegiate soccer career? The 5-foot-7, 128-pound center forward will graduate early in December so she can enroll at UK for the spring semester as a 17-year-old freshman. Eva has doubled up on her classes at West Jessamine, cramming a full year of senior English into one semester by augmenting her studies with an online class. She has a 3.48 GPA and has taken two A.P. classes. She is active in her church and volunteers with her team in various charities. Eva planned to graduate early as soon as she committed to the Wildcats last year as a junior. “I really wanted to get started and not miss out on training with the team in the spring,” she said. UK has landed one of the state’s top players. A four-year starter in high school, Eva was an All-State selection as a sophomore and junior and figures to be again this season. She has led the team in scoring for three straight seasons and assists the past two. As a freshman, she led the team in assists and was second in scoring. Eva also starred on the school’s best soccer team two years ago. As a sophomore she led the team in

scoring and was second in assists for the Colts, who lost only one game to a Kentucky team. West Jessamine advanced to the Elite Eight of the State tournament before falling to Owensboro Catholic, 1-0. The eventual state champion was South Oldham, a team West Jessamine dominated during the regular season, 8-4. Eva scored five goals in the game before the starters were pulled with 30 minutes to go and the team leading 8-0. “That was like a dream team,” said Eva, whose older sister Katie also started for the Colts. “The game against South Oldham was one of the most fun games ever. The team played so well together. Everything just clicked that day.” Eva also stars in club soccer where she has led Louisville Javanon in scoring three years in a row and to three straight State cups. Eva is a speedy player with quick feet and superb field vision. “She’s equally good with her right and left foot,” said her father, Doug. “She is so hungry to play the game. She almost never misses a day of soccer.” Said Eva: “I love soccer because it’s always a different scenario. It’s not scripted.” The only thing scripted, it seems, is Eva’s path to success. Y
